Today, we're joined by Justin (8w7) and Trisha Davis (3w2), a couple whose story holds both heartbreak and a hard-won hope. We talk honestly about the Eight–Three dance in marriage—intensity, drive, image, and protection—and how those same strengths can be magic when we're healthy and toxic when we're not. We also dive into their new book, One Choice Away from Change: Break the Cycles that Hurt Your Relationships and Hold You Back. They remind us that real transformation isn't about muscling through—it's about naming the wound, choosing presence over performance, and practicing honest vulnerability. Justin shares how confusing help with weakness fueled secrecy and performance—and how grief became a doorway to healing. Trisha reflects on the Three's chameleon move, learning to show up without over-achieving, and a wise reframing of the Enneagram as “not a weapon and not an excuse.” Together, they walk us through surviving an affair, pastoring through COVID, late-in-life family revelations, and the truth that forgiveness is not a one-and-done event. Their North Star: when they're healthy, they're magic; when they're not, they're toxic—and daily choices make the difference. If you've tried to achieve your way out of pain or sprinted past grief because it felt inefficient, this conversation will meet you in the messy middle. We explore relief vs. recovery, acting our way into new feelings, and why you can't heal a wound you won't name. It's tender, practical, and full of hope. I hope you'll tune in. About our guests Justin and Trisha Davis are pastors, authors, speakers, and the founders of RefineUs Ministries. They're not perfect. They're not interested in pretending. They are passionate about helping others experience real healing and deeper connection. Together, they co-authored Beyond Ordinary: When a Good Marriage Just Isn't Good Enough, and Justin's book Being Real > Being Perfect: How Transparency Leads to Transformation is a USA Today bestseller. Justin and Trisha have been married for 30 years, have five kids and live in Indianapolis. NED HEADS! In this episode, we dive into a candid and wide-ranging conversation about the highs and lows of podcasting, hiking, and everything in between. From the ridiculous to the reflective, we share our personal stories—from a brutal hike that pushed, to unexpected lessons learned in the most unlikely places (yes, even Disneyland). We unpack the different types of fun, including the elusive and often painful Type 3 fun—those experiences that suck in the moment but somehow become meaningful over time. Along the way, we explore how shit talking among friends is actually a form of love, how nature and physical challenges shape personal growth, and why preparation can make or break an outdoor adventure. Things take a deeper turn as we reflect on mental health, the importance of self-acceptance, and how some choices in life (and surgery) can leave a lasting… impression—cue our cautionary yet hilarious take on the infamous BBL smell. Whether it's finding humor in hardship, confronting personal fears, or simply sharing stories that bond us, this episode reminds us that life is messy, funny, painful, and unexpectedly beautiful. Derailers (the things that can get us off track) can be some of the most challenging aspects of our personality patterns to confront. It's easy to admire the drive, efficiency, and results-oriented mindset of a Type 3. But growth for Threes often isn't about achieving more — it's about slowing down long enough to notice why they're pushing so hard in the first place.Real growth doesn't always come from doing. Sometimes it comes from being honest about the patterns that are quietly running the show underneath our successes — the ones that can lead to burnout, disconnection, or chasing validation over authenticity. These derailers represent common obstacles for Threes. While they may not apply to every individual Three or apply all the time, they reflect general tendencies that can surface when we're out of alignment with our core values or worth. If you're still figuring out your dominant Enneagram type, seeing a few of these patterns in yourself might help narrow things down.If you already identify as a Type 3, is there anything you'd add to the “getting back on track” section? What helps you realign when you notice yourself slipping into image management, overworking, or tying your worth to achievement?Have a request for a future episode? Drop a text here!

Pedro Sainz is one of the most obsessed type three builders that there is. Starting with his notchback a chance meeting at the first Nona meeting with Lee Hedges as friends they pushed each other to build their cars as original as possible. From that point forward, Peter was on a mission to restore cars, not only did he restore cars, but he also built roof racks Pedro's roof racks as a matter of fact. Some of those popular wood slat roof racks made in southern California in the early 2000s his first project was razor. The second one was a 1968 automatic type 34. Then he went on to build his Pacific blue 62 which once that early car was complete which is difficult to do end of itself. He looked for something even more difficult. How about if I build a replica of the prototype convertible to an exact specification. His commitment as a builder is unmatched by enthusiast this is not his full-time job. He's a cabinet maker by trade. It's a great story about a skateboarder from Tijuana Mexico, that his love for Volkswagens and his desire to create things with his hands evolved in so many cars and building so many racks for people even on to custom making interior kits that are exact replicas of the original factory. When you talk about playing the game that's Pedro. It's a mistake to presume your way of seeing the world is normal because that means every time you meet someone with a different way of seeing the world, if it's different than yours, you will feel justified in judging them abnormal. But the Enneagram teaches there are actually nine normal ways of seeing the world, not just yours. Part of emotional and spiritual growth is the capacity to recognize the complexities of human personalities and to expand the aperture of our own lens. Today, Anthony and I welcome the talented artist, musician, filmmaker, actor (and Enneagram 3), Joel Smallbone, to the show. We begin our conversation with an exploration of Joel's personal experience with the Enneagram and he shares how the Enneagram helped open the doors of understanding within his marriage. As our conversation progresses, Joel reflects on the process of creating “Unsung Hero,” and the profound impact playing the part of his father has had in his understanding of his father, and of how he relates to the world. As Joel explains, “What [it] has done for me is inverted the narrative, and it's gone, well, hang on, yeah, you're not quite as awesome as you maybe thought you were. And hang on, there's other people's stories. And hang on, there's other people's perspectives. […] So instead of me walking into the room simply sitting, going, who are you? Who are all you in relation to me? I'm almost arguably saying, “who am I in relation to you?” Join us as we navigate these themes and celebrate the beauty of the human personality.
