The Tijuana Rivers courses through the City of Tijuana Mexico where 2 million people live.  Several hundred thousand homes in Tijuana are not connected to the city sewage system and this leads to significant pollution of the Tijuana River.  And because the city of Tijuana butts right up to the US Mexico border, the path of the river sewage and the responsibility for managing is not always clear.  This episode goes into Tijuana to learn more about why the pollution exists, where it comes from and the status of various infrastructure tools that manage the pollution.  CO-HOSTRamon ChairezUn Mar de Colores GUESTSHernando DuranTijuana Verde en EspanolTijuana Verde in EnglishWaylon Matson4 Walls InternationalRosario Jacqueline MorenoChris HelmerCity of Imperial BeachIBWC Wastewater Treatment PlantTijuana RiverTijuana River National Estuarine Research Reserve Tijuana, MexicoSan Diego / Tijuana Metro AreaNorth American Free Trade AgreementUnited States Mexico Canada Free Trade AgreementSPONSORSAmerican Rivers@americanriversFacebookKaris Family FoundationDenver Area Nissan Dealers@nissanusa THE RIVER RADIUSWebsiteInstagramFacebookApple PodcastSpotifyLink Tree

Pedro Sainz is one of the most obsessed type three builders that there is. Starting with his notchback a chance meeting at the first Nona meeting with Lee Hedges as friends they pushed each other to build their cars as original as possible. From that point forward, Peter was on a mission to restore cars, not only did he restore cars, but he also built roof racks Pedro's roof racks as a matter of fact. Some of those popular wood slat roof racks made in southern California in the early 2000s his first project was razor. The second one was a 1968 automatic type 34. Then he went on to build his Pacific blue 62 which once that early car was complete which is difficult to do end of itself. He looked for something even more difficult. How about if I build a replica of the prototype convertible to an exact specification. His commitment as a builder is unmatched by enthusiast this is not his full-time job. He's a cabinet maker by trade. It's a great story about a skateboarder from Tijuana Mexico, that his love for Volkswagens and his desire to create things with his hands evolved in so many cars and building so many racks for people even on to custom making interior kits that are exact replicas of the original factory. When you talk about playing the game that's Pedro. He's in it until the end.  www.letstalkdubs.com www.vwtrendsmagazine.com www.rosswulf.com www.thewagen.com https://www.youtube.com/@letstalkdubspodcast https://www.youtube.com/@the_Wagen

After getting rain over the weekend, three of the main fires devastating the Los Angeles area are nearly 100% contained, meaning that firefighters have been able to create barriers around the fires. But the Palisades Fire, the Eaton fire and the Hughes fire continue to burn a combined nearly 48,000 acres of land. And to the south, just a few miles north of Tijuana Mexico, the Border 2 Fire has burned over 6,600 acres and is only 74% contained.More than two dozen people have been killed as a result of the fires since they started in early January. Over 200,000 have been forced to evacuate, and tens of thousands of homes and businesses have been destroyed.Rachel was in Los Angeles recently reporting on the fires, their causes, and the response of both the government and the people on the ground. While wildfires are often covered as only natural disasters and the victims of the fires are portrayed as helpless figures, the reality is much more damning for the capitalist system that refuses to take public safety, climate change and disaster recovery for working people seriously. Support the show

John joins the owner of Caesar's Restaurant - the original home of the Caesar salad - Tana Placentini in person to eat some original Caesar salad and chat about how, why, where, and by who the Caesar salad was invented. Tana isn't gatekeeping. Visit the restaurant in person and tell him that you heard this episode; he will give you the original recipe to take home! Tana and John also talk about the origins of the famous "Mexican pizza" in Baja and Clamato cocktails (and why John might be ditching Bloody Marys forever!). A serial killer is an individual who commits a series of murders over a period of time, typically with a cooling-off period between each crime. Serial killers are characterized by their repetitive patterns and motives, often driven by psychological or emotional gratification obtained from the act of killing.Serial killers tend to choose their victims carefully, often targeting individuals who fit a certain profile or have specific characteristics that fulfill their fantasies or desires. They may have preferred victim types, such as women, children, or individuals of a certain ethnicity or occupation. The motivations behind serial killings can vary widely, and it is important to note that not all serial killers have the same motives. Some common motives include power and control, sexual gratification, a desire for dominance or to exert authority over others, a need for attention or notoriety, or even a deep-seated hatred or resentment towards a particular group.Serial killers often display certain behavioral patterns and rituals that are characteristic of their crimes. They may carefully plan their killings, stalking their victims and selecting specific locations where they feel they can operate undetected. Some killers have been known to keep souvenirs or mementos from their victims as trophies, reliving the experience through these items.Profiling and understanding the psychology of serial killers is an ongoing area of study for criminologists and psychologists. Various typologies have been proposed to classify and categorize different types of serial killers based on their motivations, behavior, and other characteristics. These classifications include organized vs. disorganized killers, motive-based typologies, and more.In this episode, we explore the story of Bryant Rivera, an American man who was preying on working girls in the city of Tijuana Mexico. This is the ancestral land of the First People, the Kumeyaay. Nature's benefits, or the goods and services vital to human health and livelihoods, are also called ecosystem services.  While there are several categories of ecosystem services, of focus today, and increasingly within the National Estuarine Research Reserve System, is the category of cultural ecosystem services. These are the non-material benefits that result from paired human and environmental interactions and include stewardship, aesthetics, recreation, and education. For places with strong indigenous and local community presence, these encompass environmental conditions that allow for spiritual experiences, cultural heritage, sense of place, and way of life. In this episode of Divided Together, we'll hear from Dr. Kristen Goodrich on her perspective about the Tijuana Estuary's ecosystem services. We'll also hear from Adela Bonilla Armenta, who works in a collective in Los Laureles, Tijuana Mexico that focuses on upcycling waste to make beautiful and functional products, and Gregg Cady in the Tijuana River Valley in San Diego who is involved in farm education. We will examine reciprocal relationship with place and hear the stories of two people in a bioregion, with livelihoods that are influenced by their being situated in the Tijuana River Watershed yet on different sides of the U.S.-Mexico border. And, somehow, they both ended up with a drive towards tech! AppTech CTO Ben Jenkins and Product SVP Bryan Guy have a passion for disruptive innovation and technology advancement. For those of you who may not know, AppTech is a payments technology company that offers two core technology products: payments as a service and banking as a service. They are vertical agnostic, and they target disparate systems lacking integration. Their clients are most often found in verticals missing core solutions and core opportunities for their omnichannel banking and they offer these clients a “layer of thin integration often missed by a number of other industries.”When asked about their competitive advantage, both gentlemen will agree that their UX offering is one of the most significant distinguishers in their space. They come in with a modern platform and are not beholden to any legacy systems. Not to mention, their adaptable, modular platform allows them to offer a proprietary experience unmatched in the industry today. Though this fundamentally changed the course of her life, Alexandra dealt with the sudden grief by asking the same question she had always asked: What can I do? This unshakable dedication to problem-solving has led up to her entrepreneurial endeavors as the co-founder of Eight Sleep, creating a temperature-regulated, health monitoring bed. Spearheading the tech industry's exploration into sleep fitness, Alexandra's made Forbes' 30 under 30 and her product has been recognized two years in a row by TIME's best inventions of the year. But she didn't always want to be an entrepreneur…in fact, her life began far from Silicon Valley, it began bouncing between San Diego and Tijuana Mexico.

Also, gotta give a big thanks to Jen and Cheri, and Cassidy at Books at the Beach. Had a great time this weekend. Thank you to all of you who took a minute to tell me how much you're enjoying That's Criminal and the books. Tonight I'm excited to talk, again, to bestselling author of The Last Jewish Gangster trilogy David Larson. Last time we talked to David we covered the early years of Michael Hardy. The god son of Bugsy Seigel, the son of one of the most prolific female associates of Murder Inc. Hardy's life is like a modern day western. An almost mythical adventure through the invisible world of the mob and criminal underground. To summarize, Hardy is ignored by his mom, and has Gangsters for role models. Hardy just decides one day he was taking on that life. He was going to be a gangster. Robberies, heists, the drug trade, and other rackets right up to when he and mom get nabbed in Mexico facilitating a stolen car ring. Hardy takes the wrap and does Mom's time in one of the most notorious prisons in the world. La Mesa, The Devils Table, in Tijuana Mexico. Today we're going to talk about The middle years, volume two of the Last Jewish Gangster series. Book two picks up with Hardy, now going under the alias of Richard Mandel being booked into La Mesa prison and it bounces from there to New York, Israel, California. Just like book one Michael Hardy's story is like watching a Tarantino movie. Today we have the great pleasure of speaking with Rafa Jimenez, the blockchain guru for ELCA and Secutix!  Rafa joins us today to shed light on blockchain and discuss its impact on the live event industry. He also discusses his career journey, shares his insights, and explains NFTs.  We hope you enjoy listening to today's captivating and informative conversation with Rafa Jimenez! Rafa Jimenez Bio (July 2022)  Rafa is a blockchain, DeFi, and fintech specialist with over 10y experience in the industry, currently leading blockchain and Web3 at Secutix in the event industry solution and ticketing platform used by the largest and most renowned venues, operas, museums, live events, artist, sports clubs and tournaments in the world. With ELCA the Swiss IT solutions company and parent of Secutix, with over 50 years of serving corporate/gov clients worldwide - Rafa serves as a thought leader and general advisor for Blockchain, DeFi, and Digital-Asset strategy.  Previously as Chief Commercial Officer at Alpian, Rafa helped build a mobile-only Swiss private banking platform, now a fully licensed Swiss bank scheduled to launch end of 2022. Before that as founder, he built and lead Alibre.io (originally “AhorroLibre”), a mobile-only metaPSP one-click payment platform helping improve financial inclusion for the base of the pyramid in Mexico, that was recognized as one of the most innovative solutions in LATAM by the Global Entrepreneurship Summit GES Marrakech 2014. He is also a founding member and regular lecturer at KlubAlibre.mx a fintech, blockchain, DeFi & Web3 working and education community in Tijuana Mexico.  Since 2012 Rafa has worked with and advised founders, teams, and developers in the fintech & blockchain space on Venture Building, Fundraising, Strategy, Tech, Customer Journey, BizDev, and G2M launch.  At McKinsey & Co. from 2006-12, he was a management consultant specializing in BizDev, new Product Dev and G2M launch strategy for global financial services players, throughout his 6 years at the firm. Since then, Rafa has served as a counselor and strategic advisor to leaders of fortune 100s, SMEs, Startups, governments, IOs, and NGOs around the globe. As a big sports and music fan, he practices and plays a wide and eclectic range of sports disciplines and musical instruments. As a passionate and self-proclaimed “tech nerd”, he's always been the first to use the latest available technology and at an early age, Rafa was already playing with electronics and programming ICs with assembly code & C++. He holds an Electronic Engineering degree from UAG Mexico 1997-01, and an MBA from HEC UNIGE Switzerland 2005-06. About Rafa Rafa describes himself as a tech geek, engineer, developer, turned management consultant, turned fintech entrepreneur, turned blockchain expert. Now, he is at Secutix with the ELCA Group, leading everything related to blockchain, the metaverse, and digital assets.  Rafa's journey Rafa is from Tijuana, Mexico. He started programming in the mid-90s, taking the electronic engineering undergraduate route and developing integrated systems for communications applications. He graduated in the middle of the tech-bubble crash in 2001. The entire industry was frozen, so he started teaching high school math. A few years later, he got a scholarship from the Swiss government and went to Switzerland in 2005 to do an MBA. He joined McKinsey in 2006 and spent the next three years working with global finance leaders, banks, and insurance companies, focusing primarily on emerging markets and developing new products for financial institutions.  Around 2010, he saw a big financial inclusion gap in some countries. He fell in love with the notion of mobile-only fintech apps as a way of assisting billions of people in emerging markets in accessing financial services. So he left consulting to start a fintech company.  In 2012, he returned to Mexico and founded a fintech company with a peer-to-peer mobile-only app that allowed people to transfer money efficiently. He ran that company for eight years.  Blockchain Just before he decided to leave consulting in late 2011, Rafa learned about Bitcoin and blockchain from his roommate and felt he had finally found the missing piece in his career. Understanding blockchain  Understanding the idea behind blockchain and having a way to trade and keep a store of value using a smartphone lit Rafa up! After that, he could not stop reading and learning about blockchain. He spent half his time traveling the world to meetups to learn from others, work with them, and develop ideas. Teaching blockchain in Spanish In 2016, Rafa started teaching blockchain in Spanish. 2020 In 2020, he returned to Switzerland and stepped down from managing his company in Mexico to focus on DeFi and blockchain implementation.  Joining a Swiss company Rafa joined a Swiss company building Switzerland's first mobile-only digital private bank. He still advises that company. ELCA and Secutix While looking for the world's largest platform implementing blockchain functions, Rafa came across ELCA and Secutix, which asked him to join and lead them. Rafa explains blockchain  A blockchain changes the paradigm of needing and reconciling thousands of global databases, each with different information. A blockchain is the marketing name for distributed ledger technology. Instead of having a thousand databases or accounting ledgers, there is only one ledger in the world. It is a distributed ledger that everyone can access and see. It is a way of keeping track of assets that everyone and no one owns at the same time. There are different blockchains for different assets. A single worldwide database  There will soon be a single worldwide database for DLT (distributed ledger technology), or a blockchain, where everyone can trade, transfer, or send dollars anywhere in the world without intermediaries. NFT (Non-fungible token)  An NFT is a certificate of ownership of a digital asset. It is an application of a blockchain. Non-fungible tokens can be traded because they represent unique ownership of something.  How blockchain applies to the live events industry  There are three types of tokens to help different parts of the industry: Fungible tokens: These can be used as payment in specific places, like airline miles. Non-fungible tokens: NFTs can be used as souvenirs or memorabilia when an event is over. ERC11-55: These tokens can get distinguished from one group to another but not amongst each other. (Like shares in different companies.) All of those will address and minimize most current ticketing problems, enable more potential, and open new opportunities within the industry.  SSI (Self-sovereign identity) SSI is a way to manage things like single sign-on, identification, and verification. With its advent, ownership of data, power, and control will return to the end user.  Blockchain problems Sometimes, blockchains can be detrimental because there is a blockchain trilemma. That means that three options cannot be maximized at the same time. Only two options can be selected: security, decentralization, scalability, or speed. Direct services  Over the long term, artists, clubs, and tournaments will be able to engage directly with their fans and provide them with services like ticketing. Empowering people  Soon, owning customers' data will no longer be necessary. Empowering customers, users, and fans will become the priority. People will consume what they want in a pull-marketing rather than a push-marketing mindset.   Connect with Eric On LinkedIn On Facebook On Instagram On Website   Connect with Rafa Jimenez On Twitter (@rjgamez) Email Rafa: rafa.jimenez@secutix.com  Secutix  ELCA   Recommended book: The Bitcoin Standard: The Decentralized Alternative to Central Banking by Saifedean Ammous

This shelter hosts around 185 people including 60 children.  One of the unique qualities of this shelter is that they work with the Yes We Can World Foundation and turned a school bus into a classroom for kids.  You can review the LA Times article here.  In the podcast, Leticia details why she does this work, what is provided in the shelter, and how you can help. I had the pleasure of meeting Letitia as the cofounder of Rise to Reunite, a volunteer group that helps reunite families separated at the border. We volunteer with Al Otro Lado, which is a bipartisan legal services organization assisting migrants in Tijuana and Los Angeles.  We have brought volunteers to Pro Amore DEI consistently from the middle of 2018 to 2020 providing humanitarian aid and legal services.  Leticia is one of the strongest and most committed people I know, doing this work out of the kindness of her heart.  You can follow Pro Amore Dei on Facebook. If you are interested in donating money to help with food, water, diapers, medical supplies, utility bills, etc., you can donate directly to this shelter by using pay pal at this link Pro Amore Dei  You can also donate food, clothes, and supplies directly to the shelter by contacting Leticia through Whatsapp at +52 664 232 3116 or through www.borderangels.org.DISCLAIMER – No information contained in this Podcast or on this Website shall constitute financial, investment, legal and/or other professional advice and that no professional relationship of any kind is created between you and podcast host, the guests or Clark Hill PLC. In our debut episode I speak to one of my closest friends, Joshua Wong. Joshua is a filmmaker, musician, artist, husband and father who has been in a two year long battle with a rare form of cancer. This interview took place on December 9th while he was in Tijuana Mexico receiving targeted integrative treatment. We speak about faith, cancer, suffering, hope, life, positivity, change and bad advice. Throughout, Joshua offers insights into how God has met him and changed him deeply during his journey. Devastatingly, Joshua died just a few weeks after this recording, on Christmas Day, and so this podcast is dedicated to his memory and the inspirational legacy he leaves behind.
