In this solo episode, I share what I wish I knew before having a baby, from never being able to have the “perfect” timeline for having kids; to how friendships and relationships might evolve once you become a parent. I talk about the intensity of having your priorities completely shift to another person and away from yourself, why it's so important to find what makes you feel like “you,” and why giving yourself a window of transition time during your days, especially during postpartum, can be a lifesaver. I also discuss the unpredictability of what works one day with your child versus what might not work the next day, the confidence that comes from being a parent, how important choosing your village is — from your partner, to your friendships — aand more.Key Takeaway / Points:On never having the perfect timelineOn your priorities shifting away from yourselfOn finding what makes you feel like yourselfGiving yourself a window of time to transition into different parts of your dayOn the energy it takes to feed another personThe unpredictability of what works one day vs. what doesn't the nextOn the joy of watching your child experience the worldOn the confidence that comes from being a parentOn the judgment you experience as a momOn how important your village is, including your partnerHow your friendships might shiftListen to Ep 207: “What I Wish I Knew in my Twenties” hereThis episode may contain paid endorsements and advertisements for products and services. Even if you aren't married, you're going to want to stick around, because her model can be applied to any relationship in your life. We're talking about the 4 essential elements of a great relationship and how they apply to marriage, parenting, and all types of relationships. Plus, we dive into how to reconnect with your spouse when you feel like you've been drifting apart and why they don't have to change for your relationship to feel better. 4 Essential Elements of a Great RelationshipIf you're in a relationship with someone that's not feeling amazing, you might not even know where to begin. The four elements Maggie shares give us a starting point to narrow down where the issue(s) might be and offer possible solutions. They each come with their own question to get you started.Perspective. Is there a different way to look at this? For example, if you feel you aren't getting what you need in a certain situation, is it possible that your partner is trying but not doing it the way you would want?Partnership. Are we on the same team? Do we have collaboration and rapport? This works like an emotional bank account. You need to make a lot of deposits into the partnership in order to make the withdrawals you want.Pleasure. Are we having fun and enjoying our connection? In a marriage, this also includes having a sexual connection. This is where tools like the Delight List I often teach come into play. Personal Power. Am I thinking that I matter? This allows you to explore what is and is not okay with you. You have to believe that you matter enough to even ask for what you want and need in the relationship. You get to ask for things that you find pleasing or delightful, and you get to say “no” to things that don't fit your priorities and values. These elements are often connected. For example, if you're enjoying each other's company, you likely also have a strong rapport and partnership. If there is one that really stands out as you ask yourself these questions, that is a great place to focus your attention. Give and Get What You Both NeedMaggie believes that people love us the best they can, but it isn't always the way we want to be loved. You and your partner might express your feelings and what matters to you in completely different ways. Sometimes we miss each other or we miss the mark on what the other person wants or needs. We're trying to do things, and the other person isn't seeing them. It's easy to tell ourselves, “Oh, they don't care. They're not thinking about me.” But often, this isn't the case. A shift in perspective can help us see things that we weren't noticing or looking for before, or we might see that they are expressing love in a different way that we would. Try asking...

Recent statistics show that up to 50% of all new dads experience depression if their partner gets postnatal depression. Are you concerned your little blessing might drive a baby-shaped wedge between you? Then your spidey senses are on the money because studies show that dads are three times more likely to die after a relationship breakdown than women. Are you anxious that the general stress of family life might damage your mental health? This is a justified concern as suicide is the single biggest killer of men under 45 in the UK. If any of these concerns resonate with you, don't worry; you're in safe, albeit slightly weathered, hands. James Macdonald is a happy and mostly calm dad of three. In First Time Dad you'll learn:Week-to-week explanations of what's happening for your baby and inside your partnerHow to be a big help, not a major hindrance, during the deliveryHow to help your partner get physically fit and ready for birthWhat to expect at your 12 and 20-week scansHow to keep her & your sense of humor during those high-pressure momentsHow to mentally prepare for the birth if you're squeamishWhat to do when you need reassurance but don't want to burden herAdvice on having sex and maintaining intimacy throughout pregnancyHow to keep calm when all hell is breaking looseWhat a birth plan is and how to prepare oneWhat nesting is and how to use it to your advantageWhat you can do to develop, strengthen and prepare your mental health for the big day and beyond itWhat you need to do & say to ensure everyone's mental health remainA podcast is an excellent business card for your book, coaching program or business! Reclaim that intimacy between the two of you outside of the setting where you parent, work, do your normal life. –Christal AllenHas your relationship taken a backseat to everything else in your life? I'm really excited to talk with Christal Allen, a certified Life & Relationship coach, about how we can reconnect and work through some of the stuff that gets in the way of a satisfying relationship. First, let's acknowledge that all the caretaking—kids, parents, pets …— can be draining. When we feel like we don't have a full cup, putting something into our romantic relationship can feel like one more thing we have to do. If you're thinking, “Why do I have to be the one to do something about our relationship?”, we get into that!Do you have a list of things that your spouse does right or wrong? Things that you want them to do that they don't? Things you think they should just know? A sense that things could be more equal. You're not alone. Christal suggests starting with getting clear on what equality looks like when it comes to managing your household and when it comes to you and your relationship. Once you know that, can you communicate it in a way that is not blaming or criticizing? We talk about: The conversations we have in our heads but never with our partners (and how that doesn't work) and not giving up on communicating your needsRecasting the stories you are telling yourself as truthsFour steps to rekindling a spark in your relationship: picture the result, what do I need to do, what do I need to feel, what do I need to believe about my relationship to create this resultDefining date night for you and your partnerHow to get talking and reconnecting if you're a little rusty What to do when your partner is ramping down or retiring and you are coming into your ownBIOChristal Allen-Harrahill is a mom, wife, and certified Life & Relationship Coach. She is the Strong Marriage Coach for professional women who want to stop having the same fight with their partner.Through her Private Coaching and Mastermind programs, she helps women create Strong Marriages through Identity Transformation. This work results in them improving their relationship and running households that support their dreams.Christal is relatable with a down-to-earth vibe that makes you feel seen, safe, and cared for. She believes women are change makers, and that families and generations are forever changed when women engage in their own unique transformation. When she is not spending time with family and friends, or helping clients, she is learning something new, enjoying the outdoors, drinking tea, or watching The Golden Girls!LINKSWebsite: https://christalallen.comInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/lifecoachchristal/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/christal-allen-harrahill-0982b296/Free Love Language E-Book: https://christalallen.com/contact/Doable Changes from this episode:PLAN A DATE NIGHT.
