The 2025 Volkswagen ID. Buzz is the most buzzworthy vehicle to hit American highways this decade. Combining the exterior style of the classic Microbus with the chassis of a thoroughly modern electric vehicle, the ID.Buzz is a crowd-pleaser that stops traffic, as Host Jack Nerad discovered during his two weeks with the vehicle. Its exterior design features LED lighting, retro-inspired wheels, and optional two-tone paint that pays homage to its iconic predecessor. But the drivetrain is anything but retro. The ID.Buzz is powered by a 91-kWh battery and offers two drivetrain configurations: rear-wheel-drive with 282 horsepower and an EPA-estimated range of 234 miles and 4Motion all-wheel-drive with 335 horsepower and a range of 231 miles. Charging is efficient, with DC fast charging replenishing 10-80% in just 26 minutes. Inside, the ID. Buzz boasts a spacious and customizable interior, offering up to 145.5 cubic feet of cargo space, flexible seating, and advanced technology, including a 12.9-inch infotainment display, IQ.Drive driver assistance, and wireless charging. It's a stark contrast to Nerad's 1968 Type 2 “Early Bay” Bus, powered by a 57-horsepower 1600cc engine that delivered a 0-60 mph time of 37 seconds and a top speed of 65 mph. But is the ID.Buzz as good a value as that long-gone college-era VW? Nerad will have the answer. In our other road test this week, Co-Host Chris Teague will have the answer on the all-new 2025 Ford Ranger. A finalist for North American Truck of the Year, the Ranger boasts a new engine that makes it much more competitive versus rivals that include the Chevrolet Colorado, Nissan Frontier, and the Toyota Tacoma. Teague is a Toyota fan, but does he see the Ranger as the better midsize truck? He'll give his verdict in this episode. Driving News Our look at Driving News this week features a headline-grabbing development that could reshape the industry. Nissan and Honda, two global giants with big U.S. footprints, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to explore a potential integration. If it goes forward, this partnership could see the companies combining their efforts in electrification, platform sharing, and advanced vehicle intelligence. With plans for a joint holding company by 2026, this is a story with far-reaching implications for drivers everywhere. In more amusing news, Hyundai has achieved an incredible and largely esoteric feat with its Ioniq 5 electric vehicle, earning a Guinness World Records title for the greatest altitude change ever by an electric car. Over 14 grueling days, the Ioniq 5 covered more than 4,900 kilometers across India, traveling from the Himalayas' highest drivable point to below sea level in Kerala. But what does this record prove? Jack and Chris will offer their opinions. Switching gears to luxury, Jack and Chris will also offer their opinions on the 2025 Genesis G80 3.5T Sport Prestige AWD, a sedan that blends advanced technology, stunning design, and exceptional performance. Powered by a twin-turbocharged V6, the G80 delivers a smooth, refined ride while packing a punch under the hood. Inside, it's all about premium touches, from Nappa leather seating to a cutting-edge OLED instrument cluster. Our two reporters will deliver their verdicts in this show This week's guest is Brian Jannusch, a Nissan GT-R expert with a passion for the legendary sports car. From its iconic engineering to his quest to drive one at the Nurburgring, Brian shares fascinating insights into what makes the GT-R so special. It's a conversation that will resonate with sports car fans and anyone who appreciates automotive excellence. The episode also tackles practical advice with safety tips for 2025 from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. As the year begins, it's a good time to revisit basics like seatbelt use, sober driving, and staying alert on the road. Simple steps can make a big difference in preventing accidents and keeping your loved ones safe.

Jealously guarding its position as the maker of the bestselling pickup model in the United States, Ford develops and offers the Ford F-150 in a wide variety of work truck, personal-use, and off-road versions. One of our all-around favorites is the 2023 Ford F-150 Tremor, a vehicle we tested this week. To build it, Ford engineers started with the fully boxed steel frame, aluminum alloy body, and varied powertrains of the standard F-150 and modified it to give it more appeal to off-road enthusiasts. At the same time, they retained the everyday usefulness of the truck and made sure the price wasn't out of reach. Ford has offered the F-150 Tremor package since the current-generation F-150 was introduced for the 2021 model year. A big addition this year is the new availability of the brand's veteran 5.0-liter V8 engine, now offered as an alternative to the 3.5-liter twin-turbocharged V6 engine. That was the configuration of the F-150 Tremor that Host Jack Nerad got a chance to test in the silt and sand of the desert outside Indio, California. He'll have a full report. The 2023 Volkswagen Jetta GLI Autobahn Edition is the subject of guest co-host Matt DeLorenzo's road test this week. The Jetta has always been an appealing compact sedan, but in this era of soulless electric vehicles, it might be more appealing than ever. Both Matt and Jack will detail their thoughts on the car in this episode. Volkswagen is also the lead news story this week as the brand introduced the U.S. version of its much anticipated VW ID.Buzz, the spiritual successor to the legendary VW Microbus. The unveiling took place in Huntington Beach, California, as a bow to the Microbus's surfer heritage. We'll tell you all about it and have some personal reminiscences about our own experiences in Volkswagen buses from the way-back machine. Our special guest this week is Toyota product expert Thomas Sondej. He recently sat down with Host Jack Nerad for an in-depth interview on the all-new 2023 Toyota Prius Prime plug-in hybrid and the hybrid version of the 2023 Toyota Corolla Cross small crossover utility. If you expect the price of electric vehicles to come down to the level of conventional gasoline vehicles soon — well, don't hold your breath. The chief executive of a major global automaker says it's going to take a while, and we'll tell you much more as we recap the week's top automotive stories. In the true crime files automotive edition this week, a French lawyer says he's about to file criminal charges against a major automaker over faulty engines. And two other big car companies — one based in the U.S. — have just been required to pay major fines for violating fuel economy regulations. All that and answers to your automotive question coming up this week on America on the Road. America on the Road is brought to you by Driving Today.com, Mercury Insurance, YourTestDriver.com, and EMLandsea.com , the publisher of Nerad's latest book, Dance in the Dark, which is available HERE on Amazon.com

It was a commercial van rather than a people hauler, with a bulkhead behind the front seats fully partitioning the cargo area; all of ours will be passenger versions. It also sat on the shorter 117.6-inch wheelbase that will be offered in Europe, while the plan is to bring only the longer-wheelbase variant to America. The U.S. version will also have a bigger battery pack than the prototype's 77.0-kWh unit. - The prototype used what will be the entry-level powertrain consisting of a single electric motor driving the rear wheels - Like the ID.4, it makes 201 horsepower and 229 lb-ft of torque. Volkswagen engineers say an all-wheel-drive version using a second motor to power the front axle will also be offered. Beyond basic dimensions - We're also promised that the finished car will support forthcoming Plug & Charge technology, which will allow cars to communicate directly with chargers to eliminate the need for cards or apps. We don't have official range figures yet, but the engineering team says they would be happy with a 250-mile rating under the European WLTP testing protocol - We haven't been given a peak charging speed either but are assured that rapid DC charging will be supported (the ID.4 supports rates of up to 125 kilowatts). A spinoff could generate the kind of earnings multiples that have given Tesla a market value approaching $1 trillion. - Renault Group CEO Luca de Meo said last week it could split off its electric and internal combustion drivetrain activities into two “dedicated entities,” as the automaker targets a 100 percent full-electric lineup in Europe by 2030. - Investors have awarded immense value to pure EV makers, such as Rivian Automotive, whose market value briefly topped Ford's late last year despite producing relatively few vehicles. - As Farley sought to maximize the value of Ford's EV operations, his vision evolved over time, from initially considering a smaller spinoff, to contemplating a full breakup, to now looking at an internal split, the people familiar with the effort said. - Analysts have said Ford needs to shed its legacy business model to achieve the profit margins that Tesla commands, which Farley has estimated top $10,000 a car. To offset the higher cost of electric vehicles, analysts say, automakers need a direct sales model, like at Tesla and Rivian, that bypasses dealers and the cut of revenue they receive. Automakers also need to lower labor costs. CEO Herbert Diess announced the date Thursday in a Twitter post that sketched out the contours of the new design, which draws on the lines of the original model. - VW's original microbus -- the colorful, bread loaf-shaped van that was a regular sight in the 1960s at music festivals including Woodstock -- has a dedicated fan following. Original Source : https://europe.autonews.com/cars-concepts/vw-poised-unveil-retro-microbus-ev-march VOLKSWAGEN TO PREMIERE RETRO ID BUZZ EV ON 9 MARCH - The model is planned for UK sale during the latter half of 2022 and will become Volkswagen's fourth dedicated electric model, following the ID 3, ID 4 and newly unveiled ID 5. - It will also be the first ID model to be offered both as a passenger vehicle and a commercial vehicle, with production planned to take place at VW's commercial vehicle plant in Hannover, Germany from early this year. - Based on Volkswagen's MEB electric vehicle platform, the new MPV will be offered in both standard- and long-wheelbase guises - The production ID Buzz adopts a squarer shape than the earlier concept in a move that, Volkswagen officials have told Autocar, is aimed at providing it with maximum interior space. - As with the Microbus, the production version of the ID Buzz adopts two conventional front-hinged doors at the front as well as two parallel sliding doors at the rear. Original Source : https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/electric-cars/volkswagen-premiere-retro-id-buzz-ev-9-march US: TOYOTA SOLD OVER 52,000 PLUG-IN CARS IN 2021 - In 2021, Toyota offered two plug-in hybrids: the Toyota Prius Prime and Toyota RAV4 Prime, while Lexus launched the all-new Lexus NX 450h+ in December (18 units). The total Toyota brand volume was: Q4: 10,376 (up 76%) at 2.5% share 2021: 52,749 (up 195%) at 2.6% share - The Toyota RAV4 Prime noted a relatively strong Q4 with 7,741 units and a total of 27,703 units in 2021. - The aging Toyota Prius Prime (the 2nd model evolution after the original Prius PHEV) noted 2,635 units in Q4 (down 29% year-over-year). However, the year 2021 was the second-best year for the plug-in hybrid Prius. Original Source : https://insideevs.com/news/558967/us-toyota-plugin-sales-2021/ - The incentive has a limit of 200,000 units per manufacturer, which was reached in 2018 by Tesla and shortly thereafter by General Motors. Reaching the limit triggers the phase out of the incentive, over the following six quarters. Tesla lost its eligibility for the federal tax credit with the end of 2019, while GM lost it on April 1, 2020. - Recently, Lexus started sales of the plug-in hybrid Lexus NX 450h+ (18 units in December), which, as far as we know, adds to the Toyota counter, marginally increasing the total. - It means that those who are waiting for the launch of the Toyota bZ4X in mid-2022 will be only shortly supported by the full incentive. - That should make the Subaru Solterra noticeably more attractive, as it's basically the same car, but eligible for the incentive. Cruise was initially supposed to commercialize an autonomous ride-hailing fleet in San Francisco in 2019 but indefinitely delayed those plans to conduct further testing and acquire needed permits. In an online survey conducted in May of 2020, respondents provided information on their household parking options, existing electrical access, and potential electrical access. - Parking for single-family detached housing (SFH Detached) was most often a driveway/carport, followed by a personal garage or on-street parking. Most of those with a personal garage had electrical access or potential electrical access, while less than half of those with driveways/carports had electrical access. - SFH Attached housing had a smaller share of electrical access for their parking in personal garages and driveways/carports. Apartment residents had the least access, with each of the three apartment categories having less than 25% access or potential access to electricity. Welcome to new PATREON EXECUTIVE PRODUCER GEORGE TORTAROLO MERCEDES-BENZ TO INVEST 60 BILLION EUROS INTO THE FUTURE - Daimler AG's Supervisory Board at its meeting today approved the Mercedes-Benz Business Plan for 2022 to 2026, endorsing the strategic plan for Mercedes-Benz to go fully electric. - For the transformation into a software-driven and emissions-free future, the Supervisory Board signed off on an investment plan for the years 2022 to 2026 of more than 60 billion euros. Although the company plans to reduce capex, research and development expenditure for the electrification of the product portfolio and digitalization measures, including steps towards automated driving, will remain at a high level. - In addition, a gradual shift toward a direct sales model, which includes control over pricing, is being sought. Rising revenue from digital services will further support results. - Mercedes-Benz is preparing to go all electric by the end of the decade, wherever market conditions allow. - the investment plan for 2022 to 2026 remains in line with the goal of cutting capex and research and development spending by more than 20 percent between 2019 and 2025 and to further reduce it beyond this date. The key to achieving this is stringent prioritization of future investments – mainly by focusing on electric mobility. The company expects that the use of standardised battery platforms and scalable vehicle architectures - together with advances in battery technology - will contribute to a reduction in the variable costs of vehicles. The proportion of battery costs in a vehicle is expected to decrease significantly this decade. Original Source : https://www.daimler.com/company/news/211202-supervisory-board-confirms-business-plan.html ELECTRIFY AMERICA BATTERY STORAGE AT 140 SITES - Electrify America today announced that it has installed onsite, behind-the-meter battery energy storage systems (BESS) at over 140 DC fast charging stations around the country, including more than 90 installations in California. These systems in total have more than 30 megawatts (MW) of energy storage capacity, representing the largest roll-out of onsite behind-the-meter battery energy storage coupled with ultra-fast DC chargers in North America. - The battery energy storage systems store power when electricity costs are low and supplement power during high points of consumption, minimizing impact on the electrical grid and mitigating demand surges to help Electrify America maintain consistent pricing. - One of the prominent obstacles utility providers face can be “demand charges,” which are electricity surcharges on peak power usage designed to capture the marginal costs imposed on the grid by high-capacity, high-utilization infrastructure, such as factories. When traditional demand charges are levied upon high-capacity, low-utilization infrastructure such as high-powered EV charging stations, they place a disproportionate cost burden on the station owners. - Electrify America's investment in onsite behind-the-meter battery energy storage also has the potential to maximize renewable energy use. Energy storage has the ability to help store excess renewable energy to be used in times where those renewable sources may not be available, and further leverage the tailpipe emissions reductions that follow from transportation electrification. (AWS) as their preferred cloud provider to deliver connected services, facilitate over-the-air software updates, and manage fleets of connected vehicles. - The latest company to sign on is electric truck maker Rivian, which comes as no surprise since Amazon is a backer of the company. - AWS will also power Rivian's software-defined electric vehicle architecture and over-the-air software updates to improve the performance of its vehicles. These photos show it wearing very little camouflage in cold-weather testing near the Arctic Circle. From these photos, the electric minivan has lost some of its retro charm in the transition from concept to production vehicle, but it's still looking attractive and practical. - ID.Buzz concept was touted as a modern interpretation of the 1960s Microbus, an icon of the hippie era. The ID.Buzz will feature an all-electric powertrain and shares its structure with the smaller ID.4 SUV. We expect the base model to have rear-wheel drive and come with around 200 horsepower; an all-wheel-drive variant could offer around 300 horsepower from dual electric motors. Will this be the new normal for EVs? - As soon as next month, the ID.3 may get an updated infotainment system with a larger 12-inch screen. In addition, the electric hatchback's touch-sensitive cabin climate slider will get lighting to make it easier to see at night. Criticism from ID.3 owners has also forced VW to upgrade the cabin with higher quality fabrics and materials, especially in upper trims. - The above updates all come ahead of a more significant ID.3 refresh that's planned for early 2023. The mid-cycle update is set to provide a larger dose of updated interior materials, a revamped exterior design, and improved LED taillights Original Source : https://insideevs.com/news/552039/volkswagen-id3-refresh-coming/ TOYOTA TO OFFER SPECIALIZED ELECTRIC CAR ‘HUBS' FOR BZ4X SALES - Toyota will sell its new range of pure-electric vehicles, starting with the bZ4X, at a series of in-dealer ‘hubs' that can offer specialised advice about the switch to EV motoring. - Toyota's European product and marketing boss, Andrea Carlucci, told us that the bZ Hubs are likely to be ‘store in store' facilities - in effect, a dedicated area of the showroom floor - but admitted that not every dealership would be expected to offer this more specialised service. - The bZ4X is being launched with a single 71.4kWh battery configuration, and Carlucci says this is designed to keep the customer buying journey as simple as possible. Welcome to EXECUTIVE PRODUCER ADAM BREWTON NORWAY'S EVS BREAK THROUGH THE 90% BARRIER "Norway's plugin electric vehicle market share in September broke new ground, hitting 91.5% with full electrics alone taking 77.5% share. Diesels lost more than half their share year-on-year, falling to just 2.3%, with petrol and plugless hybrids not faring much better. Overall auto market volume was 17992 units, slightly above seasonal norms. The Tesla Model Y and Tesla Model 3 took the top two spots." writes Dr Max Holland for CleanTechnica: "September's combined plugin result of 91.5% consisted mainly of full battery electrics (BEVs) at a new record share of 77.5%, with plugin hybrids taking a modest 13.9%. Last year, September saw 61.5% BEVs and 20.1% PHEVs." 13,946 BEVs for September. The company launched its U.S. IPO last October in a high profile merger with blank-check company Diamond Peak Holdings. Lordstown's shares trade on the Nasdaq." reports Futurecar: "Lordstown Motors claimed that it had more than 100,000 preorders for the Endurance pickup worth a total of $1.4 billion, which wasn't true. With a falling stock price, the fallout led to the sudden resignation of Burns along with Chief Financial Officer Julio Rodriguez in June, leaving the company's future uncertain. Lordstown is reportedly in talks to sell its Ohio EV factory that it acquired from General Motors to Taiwan contract manufacturer Foxconn. Foxconn's Chairman, Young Liu, confirmed to news outlet Nikkei Asia in August that the company plans to build an EV factory in the U.S. and another in Thailand." Lamborghini's first-ever dedicated EV will then arrive in the second half of the decade. Lamborghini has previewed its first EV in a shadowy teaser image on a slide showing its future product roadmap, but details are being kept under wraps." according to CarBuzz: "a new report by Automotive News suggests Lamborghini's first EV will take the form of an electric grand tourer with a practical 2+2 seating layout so the whole family can come along for the ride. Details are still scarce, but the electric grand tourer is reportedly being developed in collaboration with Audi and Porsche and be underpinned by Volkswagen Group's new Scalable Systems Platform entering production in 2024. According to the report, Lamborghini's first fully electric car will launch between 2025 and 2027. Lamborghini could utilize Rimac's battery technology since Porsche owns a 45 percent stake in the recently formed Bugatti Rimac." The California-based company has electrified everything from a Volkswagen Beetle to a Microbus, but is perhaps best known for its Tesla-powered Porsche 912. Jay Leno took one for a spin in the latest episode of Jay Leno's Garage, and to say he was impressed with the electric conversion is an understatement." say CarBuzz: "Fortunately, the electric motor and battery haven't ruined the original car's agile handling. Weighing just 2,505 pounds, the electric Porsche 912 is only 130 pounds heavier than the stock version. In fact, it's even more enjoyable to drive since it has better weight distribution and upgraded suspension. For the electric conversion, Zelectric has added a 32-kWh battery and an electric motor from a Tesla Model S rated at 536 hp. On a full charge, the Tesla-powered Porsche will last around 120-145 miles depending on how conservatively you drive." Plan is to roll out version 10.2 midnight Friday, then on-ramp ~1000 owners/day, prioritized by safety rating. Apologies, 10.2 release will be a week from Friday" "Tesla will hold off on rolling out a beta version of its so-called “Full Self-Driving” system to more customers by a week to align with a delayed software update, Chief Executive Officer Elon Musk said. The carmaker will expand access to what it refers to as “FSD beta” when it releases version 10.2 of the software, Musk wrote Friday on Twitter. He announced earlier in the week that this will take place on October 8." writes driving.ca: "A week ago, Tesla released a button to customers allowing them to request to participate in the beta-testing program. They must agree to let the company assess their driving behavior for seven days and acknowledge they're responsible for remaining alert and keeping their hands on the wheel." https://driving.ca/auto-news/technology-news/tesla-delaying-wider-release-of-fsd-beta-by-one-week-musk-says NEW ENERGY DENSITY RECORD FOR A LFP BATTERY "According to the some recent MIIT (Ministry of Industry and Information Technology) documents, a pure electric dump truck from the XCMG Group now holds the record for having the most energy dense LFP (LiFePO4) battery." write PushEVs: "The XCMG Group is the leading Chinese construction machinery manufacturer and one of the world's largest. an energy density of 176,1 Wh/kg is impressive for a LFP battery pack. In the coming months we might see this kind of energy density also in LFP batteries for electric passenger cars." Most of the Model 3s and Ys in the Earth Rides fleet were purchased new. Ys are purchased with the optional third-row seat to accommodate larger ride parties." reports Motor Trend: "The fleet also includes Audi E-Tron, Ford Mustang Mach-E, and Polestar 2 models, and other higher-end models will join the fleet (but probably no Nissan Leafs or Chevy Bolts). The local charging infrastructure affects purchases—Nashville is well served by Tesla Superchargers; Austin is less so. Hence there are more non-Teslas in the Texas fleet. In addition to driver training, new employees are schooled to be conversant in the technology of the cars they're driving, so they can answer all the frequently asked questions riders might have. And Earth Rides has worked out some sweetheart lease deals with Polestar to both expose the public to the nascent brand and to accumulate mileage more quickly than retail customers would and thereby provide fast-tracked used-vehicle stocK" Read more: https://www.motortrend.com/news/earth-rideshare-app-evs/ AUSTIN TEXAS ORDERS 26 PROTERRA E-BUSES Proterra has announced that Capital Metro in Austin, Texas is purchasing 26 40-foot Proterra ZX5 Max electric transit buses, with an option for another 126 of these buses plus chargers over the next 5 years. The first 26 electric buses should be delivered in 2022." says electrive: "In the announcement about the new electric bus purchase, it is said that Capital Metro aims to transition its entire fleet of more than 400 transit vehicles with zero-emission vehicles. According to its website, the Austin public transport provider currently has a fleet of 368 MetroBuses, which are presumably fossil-fuelled, since they list their 12 electric buses separately. Crucially, Arafura plans to process ores close to its site, ensuring direct oversight of the treatment of toxic waste products at the project it bought in 2001. China, which controls two-thirds of mining and 85% of refining of rare earths, according to BloombergNEF, is expected to put much of its production to use domestically in future." https://www.autoblog.com/2021/09/26/rare-earth-metal-alternatives/ WORLD RX ANNOUNCES 14-CAR GRID FOR FIRST FULLY ELECTRIC SEASON https://www.motorsport.com/world-rx/news/world-rallycross-14-electric-cars-2022/6678742/ NEW QUESTION OF THE WEEK WITH EMOBILITYNORWAY.COM If you have gone back to fossil cars, or play along, imagine you HAD decided to switch back from EV to combustion, what's the reason? The album is a breathtaking collection of globally inspired compositions and collaborations, with each composer sharing their own personal interpretations of folk music. Works include a title track by Vietnam War veteran J. Kimo Williams with a performance by electric violinist Tracy Silverman, Pamela Z's The Unraveling, What is the Word? by Christopher Theofanidis and Mark Wingate, new arrangements of a trio of Armenian folk songs by pioneering Armenian composer Komitas, and Eve Beglarian's We Will Sing One Song for duduk, string quartet, percussion, and track. The Pamela Z, Theofanidis and Wingate, and Beglarian pieces are part of Apollo's 20x2020 project, launched in 2014 with a mission to commission 20 new multicultural works before the end of the decade. With Malice Toward None Track List1. CATL EXTENDS BATTERY SUPPLY DEAL WITH TESLA - Sourcing locally has helped Tesla cut the prices of its Shanghai-made Model 3 sedans, which have been trimmed down by more than 25% since they were first delivered to the public in January 2020. More than 90% of the parts used in Tesla's Shanghai factory are from Chinese suppliers, Tesla China told a local media last month. Tesla also uses LG Chem batteries in its Shanghai plant, where it also is making Model Y sport-utility vehicles. It isn't clear whether CATL's batteries are used in Model Ys. Fifty-two drivers and their crew had spent close to a month preparing for the annual time-attack hill climb near Colorado Springs. - Spectators roam past fences for a better view, and even the blades of the low-flying camera helicopter mostly drowned out the siren required for electric vehicles competing here. - The true king of Pikes Peak Mountain was back this year: Romain Dumas, the crazy Frenchman who set an unbeaten record of seven minutes, 57 seconds in Volkswagen's all-electric ID. R Pikes Peak racer in 2018. - Randy Pobst was back too. After sending a Tesla Model 3 flying into a wall at Bottomless Pit, he came back for more. This time winning the Exhibition division with his new Model S Plaid from Unplugged Performance, but still finishing 10 seconds behind a 1996 BMW M3 Original Source : https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a36862669/pikes-peak-hill-climb-results-winners/ ALL-ELECTRIC MUSTANG COBRA JET 1400 ROASTS THE QUARTER-MILE - Bob Tasca III got behind the wheel of the all-electric Mustang Cobra Jet 1400 at NHRA Nationals yesterday and set a new world record. The veteran ran the Mustang Cobra Jet 1400 for a quarter mile in 8.128 seconds at 171.97 mph, crushing the 8.27 seconds at 168 mph recorded in September of last year. - The name of Ford's all-electric Mustang Cobra Jet 1400 may be somewhat misleading, since it's throwing 1500+ hp to the rear wheels instead of 1400. Ford says that's the equivalent to three 2021 Mustang GT V8 powerplants combined - According to Ford Performance, this car was built in a collaboration with Cascadia Motion for the inverter and motors and Watson Engineering for the chassis support and development as well as the roll cage. This is Ford's first factory fully electric dragster prototype, launched in April of last year. - It's nice to watch a race without having to bring ear protection, but does it feel as exciting? Eschewing the Transporter skin used by the test mules, the Microbus for the EV era has been caught wearing the production bodywork - the prototype hides its final look underneath clever camo. It would appear that VW is going for a Renault van look with the disguise applied onto the ID Buzz's front fascia, featuring stickers on the headlights to conceal the actual clusters. - The fully covered rear side glass suggests we are dealing with the cargo version of the ID Buzz, unless it's simply body-colored camo to hide the interior. - Even with all of this makeup, it's fairly obvious the production model will be quite similar to the showcar unveiled four and a half years ago in Detroit. According to a BMW dealer bulletin, the final production for the electric i3 hatchback is scheduled for July 2021. Over the last 12 months, the i3 inventory for the U.S. was at its lowest point and customers often had difficulties securing a production slot. The latest dealer info suggests that there are only around 180 production slots remaining. - BMW is now heavily invested in the launch of the BMW i4 and iX next-generation electric cars and there is very little incentive to promote or market the heavily discounted and incentivized i3. - When it goes out of production – likely in 2022 for the rest of the markets – the i3 will go down as the first and maybe last BMW built on a full carbon fiber frame. When BMW launched the i3 and i8 in 2013, the two projects were not only considered the most advanced within BMW, but also in the automotive world. The first electric BMW and also the first hybrid sportscar from Munich made use of BMW's knowledge in carbon fiber construction, but at a much larger scale. Under the new statewide EV scheme, NSW will provide 25,000 eligible buyers with a $3000 rebate and will also ditch stamp duty on electric cars valued up to $68,750. The abolition of stamp duty will also apply to EVs valued at up to $78,000. This means buyers in Australia's most populous state could conceivably pay as little as $39,670 drive-away for MG's electric SUV, which normally retails for $43,990 drive-away. - The EV subsidy and stamp duty abolition is part of the NSW Government's recently announced $490 million Electric Vehicle Strategy and will come into effect from September 1 of 2021. "Back in 2011, Scotland set a green-energy related goal for itself: It aimed to generate the equivalent of 100 percent of the country's gross electricity demand from renewables by 2020. While the country failed to reach that objective, 97.4 percent of its gross electric consumption still came from clean energy sources last year." says engadget: "Scottish authorities are hoping that renewable energy sources can meet 50 percent of the country's energy demands across electricity, heat and transport by 2030. The country has a lot of work to do to be able to reach that goal, however, especially when it comes to transportation and heating." https://www.engadget.com/scotland-renewable-energy-97-percent-electricity-needs-2020-180436107.html TESLA GETS READY TO ADD NEW MODEL Y VERSION "Tesla could be readying to add a Long Range Model Y with rear-wheel-drive (LR RWD) to its electric offerings following the publication of orders by the California air board, bucking news that it had cancelled plans for the variant." according to TheDriven: "The new document brings another chapter to the Model Y saga in which Tesla boss Elon Musk indicated a LR RWD would be added to the line-up after saying the Standard Range (not Plus) Model Y’s range would be too short to be a viable product. The California Air Resources Board published executive orders for the Long Range rear-wheel-drive version of the Model Y electric crossover on Thursday (US time), signaling that it could be available for sale within months if the company follows previous timelines for other models." After a brief introduction, Robert takes a moment to marvel at the sheer number of Volkswagens that were produced (1:14) before Russell dives into the unexpected history of the 'people's car'...specifically the Beetle (3:02). Then Robert asks Russell to drill into the history of Volkwagen after the British involvement following WW2 with a man named Heinz Nordhoff (7:19) and VW's efforts to go international and the difficulties in sharing the Beetle's new style with other cultures (8:50). Then Russell examines the complex shared history of Porsche and Volkswagen and how the companies have continued their relationship to the present day (10:49). Before taking a short break, Robert asks Russell for his advice on the most collectible Volkswagens (13:07). Robert takes a brief detour to discuss the more obscure makes and models created by Volkswagen--like the Karmann Ghia (15:57) before steering the conversation back to the Volkswagen's arrival in America (18:41) and the creation and impact of the VW Bus (22:52). To conclude, the two men speculate on the future of the Beetle and Bus designs in Volkwagen's legacy (27:36). After an introduction, Robert asks Diane to explain the goals and purpose of the Historic Vehicle Association (0:59), the qualifications that a car must meet to be included in the National Registry (3:47), and the process the vehicles must go through for documentation (5:07). Robert asks what types of vehicles are up for consideration (7:25) before Diane shares the stories of two of the most recent inductees: a 1921 Duesenberg Straight 8 (9:24) and a Dodge Challenger with a very special history (12:15). Then Robert rewinds to the first inductees: a Shelby Daytona Coupe (14:22), a 1964 Meyers Manx (15:18), and the Maserati 8CTF "Boyle Special" (16:21). After a short break, Robert and Diane discuss a recent addition to the Register--The Jenkins' Bus--an iconic vehicle marking an important time in the Civil Rights Movement in America, as well as all the work and love that was required to preserve its special history (18:12). Before moving on, Robert asks to discuss just two more cars that caught his eye: a 1964 Chevy Impala called 'Gypsy Rose' (23:36) and, the 'star' of Ferris Bueller's Day Off, the 1985 Modena Spyder Ferrari (26:34). Robert brings things to close by asking how listeners can engage with the HVA--from suggesting cars to events, such as Cars on the Capitol and the Drive History Conference (29:19)--before Diane concludes with her own story of how she developed her love for cars (35:35). Russell Hayes, like all automotive industry book authors, is passionate about his subject matter. Hayes' interests cover several iconic carmakers, including his latest effort celebrating the 75th and 70th anniversaries of the Beetle and Bus. Hayes is the author of numerous automotive books ranging in topics from auto shows to Lotus to several offerings on Volkswagen. His latest book is the just-released "Volkswagen Beetles and Buses: Smaller and Smarter." Author Russell Hayes discusses the VW Beetle and Bug in a new coffee table-sized book. In a wide-ranging interview, Hayes is our guest on Episode #153 of The Weekly Driver Podcast. Co-hosts Bruce Aldrich and James Raia talk with the author about VW's two most iconic vehicles, the first Beetles spearheaded by Ferdinand Porsche in the 1940s to the buses that became synonymous with a generation. VW History As Unusual As Any Carmaker As Hayes explains, no carmaker's history is as unique as Volkswagen — its association with the Nazi movement to the Hippie movement. More than 23 million VW Beetles have been manufactured since 1945. The book examines and celebrates all aspects of the vehicles and their more than 70 years as cultural symbols. Hayes looks back at the vehicles while focusing on the classic air-cooled VWs that ran into the late 1970s. He discusses, with accompanying photography, the Beetle and Bus at work and play. Plenty of cars and trucks having starring roles in film, but none likely as varied as VW, with its presence in films like The Love Bug, Little Miss Sunshine, Footloose, Fight Club, The Big Lebowski, and Fast Times at Ridgemont High. And there were roles in television shows like Lost and Once Upon a Time and on the covers of the Beatles' Abbey Road and Bob Dylan's Freewheelin' album. Hayes covers all things VW and pop culture. He writes about the New Beetle and plans for the VW Buzz, a modern electric version of the iconic Microbus due in 2022. Please join us for an informative episode with the knowledgeable and funny author who knows Volkswagen as few others do. Show #842 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Friday 17th July 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. HYUNDAI KONA ELECTRIC GLOBAL SALES REACH MILESTONE OF 100,000 "Hyundai Kona Electric has just reached the milestone of 100,000 global sales in just over two years since its market launch in March 2018. As of June 30, 2020, 103,719 Kona Electric were sold. More than three-quarters of the total outside of its home market - South Korea." says InsideEVs: "There should be no problem increasing the sales of Kona Electric beyond 60,000 this year, compared to less than 50,000 in 2019. The goal for Hyundai by 2025 is to gradually increase battery-electric car sales to 560,000 annually." The Kona is now made in Czech Republic about 235 miles east of Prague, 30,000 cars in first year. Batteries coming from LG Chem and SKI in Poland and Hungary. TESLA GIGAFACTORY NEVADA NOW PRODUCES 13 MILLION BATTERY CELLS PER DAY "The science channel got access to Tesla’s Gigafactory Nevada for their new show ‘Super Factories’ – giving us a rare new look inside the plant." says Electrek today: "When originally announcing the plan for the factory, Tesla was talking about the plant producing 105 GWh of battery cells per year and 150 GWh of battery packs per year once completed. However, the factory is currently about 30% complete and Tesla hasn’t expanded the facility for years as both the automaker and Panasonic have focused on optimizing the current production capacity. Also, there are a few nice tidbits of information. For example, they say that the current production capacity stands at 13 million individual cells per day. At ~17 Wh per cell, that’s 221 MWh of battery cells per day or 80 GWh per year, which would be a big increase from the latest disclosed official capacity at Gigafactory Nevada." Teslarati notes: "Rare footage of the battery cell manufacturing process was also highlighted in the Super Factories segment. This includes the massive, elaborate conveyor systems that the company utilizes for its battery cell manufacturing. A look at batteries seemingly being assembled for a Powerwall battery unit was also included in the feature. Interestingly enough, the segment also mentioned that Gigafactory Nevada is capable of producing around 13 million cells per day. " https://electrek.co/2020/07/16/tesla-gigafactory-nevada-battery-cell-production/ https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-giga-nevada-battery-cell-production-line-deep-dive-video/ STUDY SHOWS IMPRESSIVE RESALE VALUE FOR MODEL 3 A recent study showed some impressive resale figures for the Tesla Model 3, saying the sedan holds its value more than five times better than other EVs. Car search engine iSeeCars.com analyzed more than 6.9 million car sales to identify models with the greatest loss in value after three years. The three available Tesla vehicles currently in production with used car versions available all have below-average depreciation for the segment." reports TeslaMotorsClub.com: "The report said one reason Teslas defy the high depreciation of the EV segment is because over-the-air software updates help keep even the older versions current. As such, consumers are likely willing to pay higher prices for the Model S and Model X than what they are willing to pay for other used luxury vehicles, the report found. https://teslamotorsclub.com/blog/2020/07/16/study-shows-impressive-resale-value-for-model-3/ VOLKSWAGEN TRADEMARKS E-BEETLE AND OTHER CLASSIC E-VW NAMES "They’d be fools not to consider it, and it now looks like maybe, just maybe, they weren’t fools after all, as a member of the VWIDTalk forum found evidence that Volkswagen has reserved the European trademarks for e-Beetle as well as some other air-cooled era classics." says Jalopnik; "Along with the e-Beetle, VW has reserved e-Samba, which may be used as the official name for the reborn electric Microbus currently known as the ID Buzz, along with the e-Karmann (likely an electric small sports car, perhaps a convertible, like the original Karmann-Ghia), and, maybe the most questionably, the e-Kübel. Of course, just reserving trademarks isn’t an indicator that a company is actually planning to build cars with those trademarked names, but it’s certainly a step. This next-generation charging station at its Arizona Proving Grounds will be used to help VWGoA evaluate battery and charging performance under extreme hot-weather conditions. Engineers will also receive real time data to see how various chargers compare. The 50-space charging station is located at VWGoA’s global test facility in Maricopa, AZ—one of two worldwide, Group-wide hot-weather test facilities—and will allow the charging of EVs in weather conditions up to 120 degrees. Twenty-five DC fast chargers, with variable power outputs from the most commonly used charger power today at 50 kilowatts (kW) all the way up to 350kW, can charge capable EVs at speeds up to 20 miles per minute. Ten Level 2 AC chargers will also be used at the facility to simulate typical, home-based charging. The chargers will utilize charge plugs from the three standard connector types: U.S. (CCS1), Europe (CCS2) and China (GB-T). All charging equipment comes from different brands from around the world to maximize testing variability. AUDI E-TRON IS WORLD MARKET LEADER IN ITS SEGMENT The Audi e-tron is the worldwide market leader in its segment. The first fully electric series production model from Audi is popular all over the world with customers and media alike. With the e-tron GT, the Q4 e-tron, and the Q4 Sportback e-tron, Audi is looking toward an electric year 2021 in both senses of the word. In the first half of 2020, Audi delivered 17,641 e-tron models to customers worldwide. This corresponds to an increase of 86.8 percent as compared to the previous year – despite the difficult market situation due to the coronavirus pandemic. The fully electric Audi model is therefore way ahead of its competitors in the full-size battery electric vehicle SUV segment worldwide. It is even the overall top-selling electric SUV in Europe. The Audi e-tron is highly sought after in the Scandinavian market in particular. In Norway, which is the pioneering country when it comes to electric mobility, it was the top-selling passenger-car model in the first half of the year. The e-tron makes up 92 percent of the volume of Audi models delivered in Norway. It also makes up a significant portion of deliveries in Iceland (93 percent), Sweden (12 percent), and Israel (14 percent). In the USA, the e-tron has recorded an increase in sales by more than 50 percent as compared to the previous year. [Audi] will be launching the Audi e-tron GT. Performance and an expressive design are the most important ingredients for the e-tron GT. It thereby emphasizes the sportiness of the brand and continues the success story of the Audi e-tron together with the electric Q models. https://www.audi-mediacenter.com/en/press-releases/audi-e-tron-is-world-market-leader-in-its-segment-12967 MCKINSEY FINDS 7 OF 10 CHINA EVS POTENTIALLY PROFITABLE "The management consultancy McKinsey has disassembled and analysed ten popular electric cars from Chinese manufacturers for a new study. From this, the consultants derived some interesting statements on possible profits and the market prospects of international manufacturers." says Electrive: "For the study entitled “How to drive winning battery-electric-vehicle design”, popular electric cars from Chinese production were analysed, both from established groups such as SAIC and the GM brand Buick, as well as from start-ups such as Nio or World Champions. In the analysis, the experts also found that there is still no “silver bullet” in the design and procurement of electric drive components for Chinese BEVs, as is the case for European models. For two of the ten vehicles, all components were developed in-house, for three all drive components were purchased, and five chose a middle course of in-house development and outsourcing. There are also different approaches to battery designs, as well as to the networking and integration of the drive systems." https://www.electrive.com/2020/07/13/mckinsey-analysis-finds-7-of-10-chinese-evs-potentially-profitable/ FISKER TRYING TO SECURE VOLKSWAGEN'S MEB PLATFORM FOR THE OCEAN " One key piece of info is that Fisker is in talks with Volkswagen about using VW's MEB modular electric platform and ancillary components for the Ocean. The agreement would include battery packs as well." says Autoblog: "Furthermore, this attempt at deeper collaboration with VW is part of a two-year growing partnership. The Verge went through the presentation, noting that Fisker and VW entered a memorandum of understanding in 2017, upgrading that to a "collaboration agreement" in 2018. Audi subsidiary Italdesign built the Ocean crossover Fisker debuted at this year's Consumer Electronics Show, the prototype described as a "near-series prototype" and sitting an MEB platform. This month, the two companies could sign a "cornerstone agreement" to formalize "costs, production capacity, and a timeline." Show #519 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Friday 5th July 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story to save you time. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. LIGHTYEAR ONE SOLAR-CHARGING EV MAKES UK DEBUT "Dutch start-up Lightyear has shown off a prototype of its One long-range solar car at the Goodwood Festival of Speed." reports Autocar: "The One is a lightweight, four-wheel drive, coupé-style four-door, which Lightyear says will offer a range of around 450 miles on the WLTP combined cycle from a solar-electric hybrid powertrain. The static prototype was first revealed in June, and makes its public debut at the Sussex event. Lightyear claims the One is able to achieve this segment-leading range even with a much smaller battery than that found in equivalent BEVs, because it consumes much less energy than conventional electric cars. Each wheel is independently driven, minimising loss of energy throughout the drivetrain, while the use of ultra-light materials for its body construction reduces strain on the battery’s output." https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/motor-shows-goodwood-festival-speed/lightyear-one-solar-charging-ev-makes-uk-debut HONDA E SILENTLY CLIMBS THE GOODWOOD HILL LOOKING ADORABLE "Honda E is a small electric vehicle created primarily for city use. With a range of around 124 miles (200 km) from its 35.5-kWh battery, this isn’t the EV to buy if you plan on taking extended trips while suffering from range anxiety." according to Motor1.com: "The Honda E wasn’t going particularly fast while climbing the famous hill, but it’s understandable considering it wasn’t a production-ready car. Bear in mind the final product won’t come cheap, with the rumor mill indicating it will cost somewhere in the region of €40,000 in Europe. That’s a lot of money to pay for such a small car that looks like a futuristic first-gen Civic, but it certainly does have its particular charm to woo customers. When can we expect to see the road-going E? Honda has said it will unveil it before the year’s end, so it might debut in September at the Frankfurt Motor Show." https://www.motor1.com/news/358198/honda-e-goodwood-fos-video/ VOLKSWAGEN TYPE 20 EV MICROBUS CONCEPT "Built to celebrate 20 years of VW's presence and technology in Silicon Valley, this electric VW Bus is a showcase for tech and packs a lot more horsepower than the original Type 2." says Car & Driver: "The Volkswagen Type 20 Microbus concept looks a whole lot like the classic 1962 Type 2 11-window bus on which it's based. Featuring a fully electric drivetrain, the Type 20 concept utilizes a single electric motor rated at 120 horsepower and 173 lb-ft of torque. It's the product of VW's newly renamed Innovation and Engineering Center California (IECC), which is now the maker's largest vehicle research facility outside Germany. This is not, of course, the first electric VW Bus—the I.D. Buzz concept from 2018 comes to mind—but it looks a lot more like the 1962 model than that futuristic-looking concept did." https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a28280966/volkswagen-type-20-ev-microbus-concept/ TESLA MODEL 4 EURO NCAP SAFETY RATING "Tesla has extended its 5-star safety rating streak to Europe. In a new round of testing, the European New Car Assessment Programme (Euro NCAP) awarded the Model 3 its highest rating of five stars. You can watch a video of Euro NCAP’s crash test below. As fun as it is to watch a Tesla Model 3 (or any vehicle) get pummeled in crash tests, understanding what helped push the company’s safety rating so high is far more interesting." reports TechCrunch today: "this assessment focused on the car’s active safety features such as automatic emergency braking system (AEB) or one that prevents drivers from unintentionally drifting into another lane. The Tesla Model 3 earned the highest safety assist score ever awarded by Euro NCAP under its newer 2018-2019 testing protocols." https://techcrunch.com/2019/07/04/watch-how-tesla-model-3-earned-its-5-star-safety-rating-from-euro-ncap/ MOTOE FINALLY SET FOR ELECTRIC DEBUT The inaugural weekend of MotoE™ is finally here as the new class take on the Sachsenring. the time has finally come for the FIM Enel MotoE™ World Cup to go racing. Preseason testing went well, including an E-Pole and race simulation in Valencia, and the grid of 18 riders are more than raring to race. The Sachsenring hosts the history-making weekend; a tight and twisty track that should be a stunning venue for MotoE™’s debut – with the machines having shown some impressive corner speed in testing. RARE SIGHT: POLESTAR 2 AT FASTNED CHARGING STATION "A Tesla Model 3 driver was lucky enough to come across two rare sights: first, Polestar 2 prototypes at a Fastned charging station. Then, a Porsche Taycan at another charging station." says InsideEVs: "Since the all-electric Porsche gets plenty of coverage, let's focus on the new Polestar 2, which will be available in 2020. The two black prototypes were out on road tests/charging tests and we must admit that they look amazing. These cars are very attractive, much like the Jaguar I-PACE. Perhaps this will have a positive impact on future sales." Polestar 2 specs: 78 kWh battery (324 pouch cells, 27 modules, liquid-cooled) target 500 km (311 miles) of WLTP range expected 275 miles (442 km) of EPA range 0-100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.7 seconds https://insideevs.com/news/358032/video-polestar-2-fastned-charging-station/ RENAULT UK UNVEILS NEW ‘ELECTRIFY JULY’ OFFERS Renault has unveiled its exciting ‘Electrify July’ sales event, which sees its entire range of electric vehicles available with an additional manufacturer contribution of up to £1,000. The ‘Electrify July’ offers are designed to make switching from traditionally-engined vehicles to EVs even more attractive, allowing motorists and businesses to reduce both their environmental footprint and driving costs. Leading the ‘Electrify July’ charge is the Renault ZOE, which through the offer is now available with an additional £1,000 contribution. Including the offer, the Dynamique Nav model is available from £17,420 and the S Edition version from £18,270 – making the ZOE the most affordable new four-seater EV in the UK. Plus, he reviews many of the 20 polarizing questions about hot dogs and sausage posed by the Council this morning. He also tells you how to win some cool hot dog-themed prizes. Next up is travel dude, Gary Warner [30:10]. He actually found several things to do in Phoenix and Scottsdale. This week, we've got the big fight on our minds. Not Mayweather vs. McGregor. We've got job growth vs. the Federal Reserve's interest rate policy. The government is set to release its monthly jobs data this week. Employment growth has been strong throughout most of the year so far. We take a deep dive into the recent data, letting you know what's going on below the surface and how it stacks up historically. We also take a look at how the jobs data could impact the Federal Reserve's thinking. Earlier this year, it looked like the rate-hike train was well out of the station and picking up stream. In recent weeks, though, there's been a growing sense that the Fed needs to scale back. There's even been whispers that the next move should be a rate cut. And as always, we brawl with some of Wall Street's more obscure middleweights... We've got a review of the feud involving everyone's new cabinet WAG. We've got a lawsuit alleging premium bottled water is really just from a tap. We've got an electric Microbus on the way. We've got a $2 million lottery scam that could lead to 25 years in jail for one software programmer. We've got a European country that might launch its own cryptocurrency. And we've got bad news on the gender pay gap.
The exciting conclusion to the Volkswagon Microbus Trilogy.
