*** Please note the special day for this event -- the call falls on Sunday, instead of our usual Saturday time. When Zachary Shore was a sophomore at the University of Pennsylvania, he called his parents to tell them he was dropping out. Legally blind by age 16, his vision had continued to deteriorate, and he found himself socially isolated, fearful, and debilitated by eye strain. After an encounter on campus with a fellow blind student who had just returned from a solo excursion with seeming ease, Zach had a moment of awakening: “My problem wasn’t my blindness. It was my lack of skills and confidence.” He would indeed come to find a remarkable set of skills and confidence — eventually earning a doctorate from Oxford University, becoming a distinguished scholar of international conflict and an author of six books, and traveling to more than 30 countries, many of them as solo journeys. Zach credits his strong sense of self to the nurturance of his parents. But his ability to move freely about the world came through a rigorous and demanding training program at the Louisiana Center for the Blind (LCB) — where he made his way after his moment of awakening in college — whose requirements for graduation would challenge even the best of sighted students. Shop, prepare, and cook a meal for 40 people, all by yourself, and don’t forget the entire cleanup. Accomplish a “drop route”; that is, find your way back to the LCB after being dropped in an unfamiliar location, without asking anyone, using only environmental clues like the direction of the sun. And take a solo trip to a city you’ve never visited before, with an assigned checklist of to-dos. Armed with solid skills and having confronted many of his fears, Zach returned to finish his studies at U. Penn. He went on to receive a master's in history, a doctorate in modern European history, a postdoctoral research fellowship at Harvard, and a Fulbright Award, among other distinctions. His books, which have hard-hitting names like What Hitler Knew, A Sense of the Enemy, and Breeding Bin Ladens, examine themes like morality in war and “strategic empathy,” focusing on understanding the enemy. As a professor at the Naval Postgraduate School in Northern California, he is “doing his best to give back to the community by helping military leaders and others think more deeply about the choices they make and the causes of war.” Zach’s hard-hitting academic interests belie his gentle and modest demeanor. He has been described as “a historian of great humanity and insight” with analyses that are “penetrating yet sensitive.” He often shares stories of his personal failures and lessons learned, that “it is okay to fail as long as I try again.” Most recently, he has “tried again” and brought forth another book, This is Not Who We Are: America's Struggle Between Vengeance and Virtue. According to the esteemed historian Adam Hochschild, Zach “spotlights the moral quandaries that plagued Americans as their wartime thirst for vengeance wrestled with their loftier ideals.” As to whether his blindness sparked his broader interest in human judgment, Zach reflects, “I don’t think so… but being unable to read body language or facial expressions has certainly led me to think about how we read other people. I’m also obsessed with the general question of why people shoot themselves in the foot.” For more than three decades, he has been an advocate of improving opportunities for the blind. He has also written on why smart people make bad decisions and how to succeed in graduate school. Through his company UpWords, he serves as a writing coach for authors, professionals, and students. Please join Adam Hochschild and Rahul Brown in conversation with this insightful historian and courageous citizen of the world.

Merry Christmas! In this episode, we explore some of the less discussed sides of the Advent story. Too often we abstract the Incarnation and forget that Christ was born into a time and place with major political, economic, and social strife. Mary and Joseph had to navigate a lot more than an unplanned pregnancy. Practical theologian, author, and speaker Kelley Nikondeha joins our Director of Technology Dan Johnson for a conversation on her new book “The First Advent in Palestine: Reversals, Resistance, and the Ongoing Complexity of Hope.” We listen in as she talks about the broader context of the world and region that Jesus was born into as well as some of the challenges Mary and Joseph would have faced in that time and place. Kelley is a theologian and author with a degree from Fuller Theological Seminary. She is a co-director of Communities of Hope, a community development enterprise in Burundi, and also serves as the theologian-in-residence for SheLoves Magazine. We hope you enjoy this UpWords conversation and the rest of your advent season. Wisdom-Trek / Creating a Legacy Welcome to Day 1134 of our Wisdom-Trek, and thank you for joining me. This is Guthrie Chamberlain, Your Guide to Wisdom Don’t Forget the Bread – Meditation Monday Wisdom – the final frontier to true knowledge. Welcome to Wisdom-Trek where our mission is to create a legacy of wisdom, to seek out discernment and insights, and to boldly grow where few have chosen to grow before. Hello, my friend, I am Guthrie Chamberlain, your captain on our journey to increase wisdom and create a living legacy. Thank you for joining us today as we explore wisdom on our 2nd millennium of podcasts. This is https://wisdom-trek.com/day-1134/ (Day 1134) of our trek, and it is time for Meditation Monday. Taking time to relax, refocus, and reprioritize our lives is crucial in order to create a living legacy. For you, it may just be time alone for quiet reflection. You may utilize structured meditation practices. In my life, meditation includes reading and reflecting on God's Word and in praying. It is a time to renew my mind, refocus on what is most important, and make sure that I am nurturing my soul, mind, and body. As you come along with me on our trek each Meditation Monday, it is my hope and prayer that you too will experience a time for reflection and renewing of your mind. Some sort of bread is an indispensable part of most people's diet, especially in the western world. It is served at nearly every restaurant and used to make sandwiches of all kinds. While an overabundance of bread made from highly refined flour is not healthy, whole bread in moderation is a necessity for most. There is, however, another type of bread that we should bring to every meal. In today's meditation, let us consider… Don't Forget The Bread Bread is eaten daily. Some fruits are available only in season. Some drinks are made only on holidays. Not so with bread. And not so with Jesus. He should be brought to our table every day. We let him nourish our hearts, not just in certain months or on special events, but daily. Bread can meet many needs. Jesus can meet our every need. He has a word for the lonely as well as for the popular. He has help for the physically ill and the emotionally ill. If your vision is clear, he can help you. If your vision is cloudy, he can help you. Jesus can meet each need. Can you see why Jesus called himself the Bread of Life? He is necessary in order to sustain eternal life. I can think of one other similarity. Consider how bread is made. Think about the process. Wheat grows in the field, then it is cut down, winnowed, and ground into flour. It passes through the fire of the oven and is then distributed around the world. Only by this process does bread become bread. Each step is essential. Jesus grew “like a tender green shoot” (http://www.crosswalkmail.com/qvppwhmfpnptmdfbtvqrjtyjmhtdsqqdngmjwwbppvgfmng_lhqdhzzwhkqdrmjjwndqzzz.html?a=UpWords+from+Max+Lucado&b=UpWords+from+Max+Lucado+01%2F19%2F05&c=2808369&d=891429008e1af5f78b8ec1c361bf6bfb&e=490079284 (Isaiah 53:2)). He was one of the thousands in Israel, indistinguishable from the person down the street or the child in the next chair. Had you seen him as a youngster, you wouldn’t have thought he was the Son of God. He was just a boy. One of the hundreds. Like a staff of wheat in the wheat field. But like wheat, he was cut down. Like chaff, he was pounded and beaten. “But he was pierced for our rebellion, crushed for our sins. He was beaten so we could be whole. He was whipped so we could be healed” (http://www.crosswalkmail.com/jtfqrfbmqsqwbnmdwthkzwczbfwnjhhnsvbzrrdqqtvmbsm_lhqdhzzwhkqdrmjjwndqzzz.html?a=UpWords+from+Max+Lucado&b=UpWords+from+Max+Lucado+01%2F19%2F05&c=2808369&d=891429008e1af5f78b8ec1c361bf6bfb&e=490079284 (Isaiah 53:5)). And like bread he passed through the fire. On the cross, he passed through the fire of God’s anger, not...

Stuff…In our western cultures, and especially in the United States, accumulating stuff has become a national pastime. What drives this fixation we have with accumulating more and more? In our Meditation Monday today I want us to reflect on… The Many Faces of Greed Our obsession with stuff carries a hefty price tag. As a society, we spend 110% of our disposable income trying to manage debt. We are obsessed with accumulating stuff. We buy things we don’t need with money we don’t have to impress people we don’t like. We have become a nation of hoarders. We have to build or buy larger homes to store all of our stuff, and when they fill up, we spend even more money renting storage buildings to store the stuff we never use and certainly don't need. We fill our garages to the brim with worthless stuff, while we let our vehicles costing tens of thousands of dollars sit out in the weather to be ravished by the elements. The US and most western governments do the same running on deficit spending. Why are we driven to such insanity? Who can keep up? No one can! Jesus warns in http://www.crosswalkmail.com/dptdpstmdgdftjmnfrkwlfzltsfjhkkjgctlppndhmhdrrh_cqjgmhhjmdqgftcgtqghghh.html?a=UpWords+from+Max+Lucado&b=UpWords+from+Max+Lucado+01%2F19%2F05&c=2623353&d=891429008e1af5f78b8ec1c361bf6bfb&e=490079284 (Luke 12:15), “Beware! Guard against every kind of greed. Life is not measured by how much you own.” Greed comes in many forms. Greed for approval. Greed for applause. Greed for status. Greed to keep up with others. The tenth commandment in https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Exodus+20%3A17&version=NLT (Exodus 20:17) clearly tells us, “You must not covet your neighbor's house. You must not covet your neighbor's wife, male or female servant, ox or donkey, or anything else that belongs to your neighbor.” Greed has many faces but speaks one language: the language of more. Wise was the one who wrote, “Whoever loves money never has money enough; whoever loves wealth is never satisfied with his income.” We could also say, “Whoever loves stuff, never has enough stuff.” We are only caretakers at best of all that we possess in this world. When we depart, it is no longer ours. This old adage is also very true, “The more that we own, the more we are owned by it.” The only way to feel full is to feel fulfilled. The only way to feel fulfilled is to understand that everything we have comes from God—and he gives us exactly what we need. All of it is on loan! And, someday we'll have to give it all back, checking it at heaven's door! That is a wrap for today's meditation. Next week we will
Wisdom-Trek / Creating a Legacy Welcome to Day 949 of our Wisdom-Trek, and thank you for joining me. This is Guthrie Chamberlain, Your Guide to Wisdom Thoughts Become Actions – Meditation Monday Thank you for joining us today for our five days per week wisdom and legacy building podcast. This is https://wisdom-trek.com/day-949/ (Day 949) of our trek, and it is time for Meditation Monday. Taking time to relax, refocus, and reprioritize our lives is crucial in order to create a living legacy. For you, it may just be time alone for quiet reflection, or you may utilize structured meditation practices. In my life, meditation includes reading and reflecting on God's Word and praying. It is a time to renew my mind, refocus on what is most important, and make sure that I am nurturing my soul, mind, and body. As you come along with me on our trek each Meditation Monday, it is my hope and prayer that you too will experience a time for reflection and renewing of your mind. What do you allow your mind to think about throughout your day? Where do those thoughts take you? In our Meditation Monday today, I want us to reflect on… Thoughts Become Actions Today's thoughts are tomorrow's actions. Today's jealousy is tomorrow's temper tantrum. Today's bigotry is tomorrow's hate crime. Today's anger is tomorrow's abuse. Today's lust is tomorrow's adultery. Today's greed is tomorrow's embezzlement. Today's guilt is tomorrow's fear. Could that be why Paul writes in 1 Corinthians 13:4-5, “Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous or boastful or proud or rude. It does not demand its own way. It is not irritable, and it keeps no record of being wronged,”? Some folks don't know we have an option. Paul says we do in 2 Corinthians 10:5, “We destroy every proud obstacle that keeps people from knowing God. We capture their rebellious thoughts and teach them to obey Christ.” Do you hear some battlefield jargon in that passage — “destroy every obstacle,” “capture rebellious thoughts.” and “obey Christ”? You get the impression that we are the soldiers, and the thoughts are the enemies. It was for Jesus. Remember the thoughts that came his way courtesy of the mouth of Peter? Jesus had just prophesied his death, burial, and resurrection, but Peter couldn't bear the thought of it. But Peter took him aside and began to reprimand him for saying such things as recorded in Matthew 16:22-23, “‘Heaven forbid, Lord,’ he said. ‘This will never happen to you!’ Jesus turned to Peter and said, ‘Get away from me, Satan! You are a dangerous trap to me. You are seeing things merely from a human point of view, not from God's.'” See the decisiveness of Jesus? What if you did that? What if you took every thought captive? What if you took the counsel of Solomon in Proverbs 4:23, “Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life.” You are not a victim of your thoughts. You have a vote. You have a voice. You can exercise thought prevention. You can also exercise thought permission. Change the thoughts, and you change the person. If today's thoughts are tomorrow's actions, what happens when we fill our minds with thoughts of God's love? Will standing beneath the downpour of his grace change the way we feel about others? Paul says absolutely! It's not enough to keep the bad stuff out. We've got to let the good stuff in. It's not enough to keep no list of wrongs. We have to cultivate a list of blessings. The same verb Paul uses for keeps in the phrase “keeps no records of wrong” is used for think in http://www.crosswalkmail.com/xhhjvsdbjgjtdcbmtplqntkndstchllcgrdnvvmjdrpjjbs_owzkqffrqzmkdtwjjtqlmff.html?a=UpWords+from+Max+Lucado&b=UpWords+from+Max+Lucado+01%2F19%2F05&c=2524013 (Philippians 4:8,) “And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing.
