It's crucial to recognize the significant impact that sleep, or lack thereof, can have on our employees' productivity and overall well-being. As managers, we often overlook the various factors that can affect their sleep patterns, which in turn influence their performance during the workday. Factors such as travel, dietary habits, level of physical activity, stress levels, and excessive use of gadgets all play a role in disrupting our employees' sleep routines and personal circadian rhythms. For instance, frequent travel can disrupt one's sleep schedule due to jet lag and changes in time zones. Unhealthy eating habits or consuming stimulants like caffeine late in the day can interfere with the ability to fall asleep or stay asleep throughout the night. Similarly, inadequate exercise or high levels of stress can lead to restless nights and decreased sleep quality. Moreover, the excessive use of electronic devices before bedtime, such as smartphones, tablets, or laptops, can disrupt the body's natural sleep-wake cycle due to the blue light emitted by these devices, thus making it harder for individuals to fall asleep. As managers, it's essential for us to be mindful of these factors and create a supportive environment that promotes healthy sleep habits among our employees. This could involve offering flexibility in work schedules to accommodate varying sleep needs, providing resources or workshops on stress management and sleep hygiene, and fostering a culture that prioritizes work-life balance. By acknowledging and addressing the impact of sleep on our employees' lives, we can ultimately enhance their well-being, productivity, and satisfaction in the workplace. Bijoy E. Jesus was a Jewish rabbi, who was the savior of the world but also celebrated Passover, taught in synagogues, wore Jewish vestments and ordered his life around the Jewish, not the Christian calendar. So what happened. How did the church forget that Jesus was an observant Jew? How has Jesus' identity as Israel long promised Messiah become such a fuzzy concept in the church? How has Christianity wandered so far from the Judaism in which it was birthed? How does this Jewish background of Jesus help us understand the NT? Join Sean and Scott as they interview Jen Rosner about her new book, Finding Messiah. Jen Rosner is Affiliate Assistant Professor of Systematic Theology at Fuller Theological Seminary.  She also holds academic posts at the King's University and the Messianic Jewish Theological Institute.  She is the author of 4 books and speaks widely on the the Jewish background to Christian faith. ==========Think Biblically: Conversations on Faith and Culture is a podcast from Talbot School of Theology at Biola University, which offers degrees both online and on campus in Southern California.   Read a transcript of this episode at: https://www.biola.edu/blogs/think-biblically/2022/finding-messiah       Find all episodes of Think Biblically at: https://www.biola.edu/think-biblically   Watch video episodes at: https://bit.ly/think-biblically-video

The Jewishness of the Gospel. Today, Mike and Tim sit down with Dr. Jen Rosner, to discus her new book “Finding Messiah: A Journey into the Jewishness of the Gospel.” Jen, who was born Jewish and later became a Christian, walks us through her own Journey and what she found in study as she reconciled the two traditions and bridges the ancient rift between Jewish identity and Christian faith. How do we so often forget that Jesus was Jewish? How did his Jewish identity inform his work, words, and witness? “When we begin to understand Christianity's indelible relationship to Judaism, key aspects of the Christian faith come alive and the wonder of the gospel becomes clear in new and powerful ways. Rediscover the Jewish Jesus, and in so doing, experience a deeper and richer faith than ever before.” Dr. Rosner is an Affiliate Assistant Professor of Systematic Theology at Fuller Theological Seminary. Elise Rainer (Ph.D. International Studies 2016) is Affiliate Assistant Professor at the University of Washington Department of Scandinavian Studies and Co-Founder of Aurora Global Advisors, a consulting firm that advises foreign policy leaders and organizations on human rights and justice global programs. She is a former diplomat with the U.S. State Department, U.S. Mission to the United Nations, and USAID. Along with her recent book on LGBTI rights in foreign policy, Dr. Rainer has published in numerous foreign policy outlets including: Foreign Policy, Democracy and Security. Diplomacy & Statecraft, and NPR's Academic Minute. Rainer's book, “From Pariah to Priority: How LGBTI Rights Became a Pillar of American and Swedish Foreign Policy,” gives a unique, insider perspective that explains the unexpected incorporation of LGBTI rights into the United States and Swedish foreign policies. Through case study analysis, former diplomat Dr. Elise Rainer offers exclusive insights into how normative values influence foreign affairs. From original data and interviews with high-level officials within the State Department and across U.S. foreign policy institutions, the book provides original insights from leaders responsible for shaping emerging LGBTI global policies. Sweden was the first country to implement a feminist foreign policy and commence formal LGBTI diplomacy. As other countries replicate these policies, Sweden is an important country to follow for international human rights trends. This book contextualizes the diplomatic precedent of revamping foreign assistance to Uganda when lawmakers proposed a death penalty law for homosexuality. The book scrutinizes effective tactics for advocacy organizations to influence foreign policy institutions. It also explores current debates in the area of gender and sexuality in foreign affairs, and offers pragmatic policy recommendations for civil society organizations, foreign policy leaders, and human rights practitioners.

This patent-pending device empowers parents to monitor ear, nose, and throat (ENT) symptoms, and it can be used safely in the home. It all started when Jane’s son had an ear infection soon after starting child care. After a long year with four infections and an especially stubborn episode that lasted 40 days, Jane decided to do something about it... Remmie is passionate about empowering parents to evaluate these symptoms at home and providing telemedicine doctors with a precise view of their patients’ symptoms to improve diagnostic accuracy. Jane has 15 years of experience in healthcare product R&D and operations including in Becton, Dickinson, and Amgen. She is the Affiliate Assistant Professor with the University of Washington in biomedical diagnostic technologies. This conversation, which was recorded this past summer, is led by Dr. Shannon Valenzuela, Affiliate Assistant Professor of English and Content Director for Liberal Learning for Life. She is joined by Dr. Mark Petersen, Assistant Professor of History, and Dr. David Upham, Associate Professor of Politics. They discuss William Golding’s 1951 novel Lord of the Flies and a recently reported “lord of the flies in real life” story, in which a group of boys were shipwrecked on an island and- unlike in Golding’s novel – did not turn violent toward each other but survived and cooperated until their rescue. They also discuss our longstanding fascination with castaway stories and state of nature stories; the value of studying history and political philosophy; and the importance and power of stories in general. The article that they discuss can be read here: https://www.theguardian.com/books/2020/may/09/the-real-lord-of-the-flies-what-happened-when-six-boys-were-shipwrecked-for-15-months Learn more about Liberal Learning for Life at the University of Dallas here: https://udallas.edu/liberal-learning/

Wildfires are nothing new – they’ve been part of the west’s ecology for millennia. But burning fossil fuels and suppressing the burning of forests over the past century have led to larger, more frequent and ever-more catastrophic wildfires. And burning trees release carbon dioxide. California’s fires now are so big and fierce that they threaten to erase the state’s progress in reducing greenhouse gas emissions. And even for those miles from the flames, the smoke from raging wildfires presents an extra danger in the age of coronavirus. "How and when exposure to wildfire smoke increases the likelihood of infection with COVID-19, we’re still trying to figure that out," says Vin Gupta of the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation at the University of Washington. "But there is a clear symmetry between exposure and the likelihood of infection." Visit climateone.org/watch-and-listen/podcasts for more information on today's episode. How worried should we be about the next earthquake? And how do we prepare for “the big one”? That is the topic of this podcast and the next Open Mic Science event on June 5th at 8pm at The Treehouse Cafe.  Open Mic's Michael Cox, a recently retired climate change advisor of the Environmental Protection Agency, and Dr. Erin Wirth, a research geophysicist with the US Geological Survey and also an Affiliate Assistant Professor at the University of Washington, talk about what researchers are learning about Cascadia's next earthquake and why this topic is so important. The last great Cascadia earthquake occurred in January 1700, before seismic instruments were around to record the event. Today, researchers like Dr. Wirth are using the results of computer simulations that demonstrate 50 different ways a magnitude 9 earthquake could unfold. These simulations evaluate the effects on buildings and the potential for liquefaction and landslides in an attempt to improve our understanding of how the Pacific Northwest should prepare for such an event. In this podcast, we also learn about Open Mic Science, a Bainbridge Science Café based on the principles of Cafe Scientifique and committed to the public understanding of science. On the first Tuesday of every month at 8pm at the Treehouse, the public is invited to explore ideas in all aspects of science and technology in an informal, social setting. Enjoy pizza and beer, and stay abreast of current knowledge. All talks are free. For more information on Open Mic Science, please visit: https://openmicscience.weebly.com/.
