Astellas and The Prostate Cancer Foundation teamed up in September 2022 (Prostate Cancer Awareness Month) to provide free Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) testing. Twelve private hospitals took part in this initiative and a total of 1 256 PSA tests were carried out. The PSA test is a blood test to assist in the detection of prostate abnormalities. The aim of this initiative was to raise awareness about the risks of prostate cancer and to encourage men to consider age and risk appropriate screening to ensure the early detection of prostate cancer. This year the Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) testing is back and will be held from 27-28 September 2024 and Dr Lance Coetzee, surgeon and urologist at the Urology Hospital Pretoria joins to talk about this significant awareness.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In this episode of “Inside Health Care,” we take a look back at what we've learned since the pandemic hit over two years ago. We first chat with an upcoming star speaker at NCQA's 2023 Health Innovation Summit on what we've garnered from the growth of telehealth in remote medicine. Then in our second interview in this episode, we discuss the public's conflict with immunization and new strategies on encouraging vaccination.Dr. Leslie Eiland is an Associate Professor of Medicine in the Department of Internal Medicine, Division of Diabetes, Endocrinology & Metabolism at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. She is Medical Director of Patient Experience and Digital Health at Nebraska Medicine, and has been Medical Director of the endocrine telehealth program there since 2014. The program provides care via telehealth to eight rural community hospitals in Nebraska and Iowa. Dr. Eiland's clinical areas of interest and expertise are remote delivery of endocrine care and providing endocrine support for primary care providers in rural communities. For our second interview, we wonder: what have we learned from the pandemic? With backs up against the wall and clinical care pushed to capacity, 2023 was a time of reflection...and re-invigoration. In this interview, hosted by Dr. Sepheen Byron, Assistant Vice President, Performance Measurement at NCQA, you'll hear about one such effort to see what we've learned about, and gain new insights into approaches to care, from review of pandemic care. In this case, we focus on Adult Immunization and improving adult immunization rates.A panel of experts, including partners from NCQA, convened in June of 2023 for a roundtable discussion on adult immunization. They not only discussed clinical guidelines and approaches to better health. They considered simple human behavior: how to rebuild trust with patients and ultimately find new ways to encourage them to vaccinate. In September 2023, NCQA released a white paper summarizing the roundtable's discussions and their conclusions.Megan Lindley, MPH, is the adult vaccination Team Lead of the Applied Research, Implementation Science, and Evaluation Branch in the Immunization Services Division of the CDC. Her areas of research interest include immunization law and policy, adult immunization quality measurement, vaccination in pregnancy and healthcare personnel vaccination. She was an active member from 2012-2019 and a co-chair from 2018-2019 of the National Adult and Influenza Immunization Summit's Quality Measures Workgroup, which developed two immunization quality measures that were added to HEDIS in 2019: a measure of routine adult vaccination and a composite measure of vaccination of pregnant women. Ms. Lindley has authored or co-authored over 100 peer-reviewed publications. In our Fast Facts segment, we observe September's Prostate Cancer Awareness Month with important information from the CDC on symptoms and screening. We also discuss one of a number of NCQA's cancer-related HEDIS screening measures. Colorectal Cancer Screening, which we call C-O-L or C-O-L-E, assesses adults 50–75 who had appropriate screening for colorectal cancer with any of a number of tests, including a colonoscopy every 10 years, computed tomography colonography every 5 years and a stool DNA test every 3 years.

In the U.S., September is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month. It remains one of the most frequently diagnosed types of cancer among men in this country. In fact, it's the second most common type of cancer among men. The American Cancer Society estimates that there will be 260,490 new cases and 34,500 deaths in the U.S. from prostate cancer this year. The average man has a 1 in 8 risk of prostate cancer. That risk can increase if someone has a family history of prostate cancer, or if a man is African American. Prostate cancer doesn't only strike older men, though your risk rises as you age. Men need to know this, and not just in September. In Episode 50, listen as Dr. G and his guest, Brian McNeil, MD, MBA, FACS, share information about symptoms of prostate cancer, how to know when you or someone you know is at risk of prostate cancer, and when to talk to your doctor about a screening. September is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month! So, to support the effort to get the word out, we are re-airing our 2nd episode with prostate cancer expert, Dr. Judd Moul. Dr. Judd Moul, is from Duke University, and he's here today talking about the importance of the PSA, or the Prostate Specific Antigen, which is like a check-engine light for men's prostate health. Dr. Moul joined the Duke faculty in 2004, after a career in the US Army Medical Corps, where he was mainly at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. Dr. Moul, who served as the editor for Prostate Cancer and Prostate Disease Journal, has authored and co-authored over 275 scientific manuscripts and book chapters. He is a retired colonel, and also a noted researcher and clinician in the area of prostate cancer. He is also a popular speaker and lecturer, having been a visiting professor and keynote speaker throughout America and the world. Be sure to listen in today, to hear what Dr. Moul has to share about the importance of the PSA. And in honor of Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, schedule an appointment for your screening today! Disclaimer: The Prostate Health Podcast is for informational purposes only. Nothing in this podcast should be construed as medical advice. By listening to the podcast, no physician-patient relationship has been formed. For more information and counseling, you must contact your personal physician or urologist with questions about your unique situation. Show Highlights: Dr. Moul explains what a PSA is. What is measured in the PSA test. The PSA test first came out in the late '80s. Initially, several companies were making the test, and there were no national standards at the time, so the results could vary, depending on where the test was done. Dr. Thomas Stamey, a famous Stanford urologist, came up with a standard for PSA testing. Dr. Moul explains how doctors checked men's prostates in the years before the PSA tests became available. The problem with doctors prescribing antibiotics for suspected prostate infections. A digital rectal prostate exam is still very important, even in combination with the PSA. The guidelines that Dr. Moul prefers to refer to, with regards to using the PSA for prostate cancer screening. There was an unsettling trend, in around 2012, that resulted in millions of American men not getting PSA or prostate cancer screening. Today, urologists are doing a very good job of determining who needs to go for an evaluation for elevated PSA. There are some very important things that The US Preventative Services Task Force needs to recognize around the cutting-off of PSA testing for certain men. September is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, and today, we have a special treat for you! We have the expert robotic prostate surgeon, Dr. Paul Maroni joining us today to discuss how surgeons are trained to do this intricate robotic surgery. A diagnosis of cancer is awful, and Dr. Maroni views the patient surgeon relationship as a partnership. He does his best to give every patient the time they deserve. He focuses on educating his patients in clear terms and uses a team approach to provide the very best cancer care. Stay tuned to find out more! Dr. Pohlman had the good fortune to learn from Dr. Maroni during his urology residency training at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus. He found the way that Dr. Maroni broke down the steps of the robotic-assisted radical prostatectomy to be extremely valuable from a training standpoint, and today, he credits much of his early foundational groundwork training in robotic surgical training to Dr. Maroni. Dr. Maroni received fellowship training in urologic oncology at Indiana University. He returned to the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus as a faculty member in 2007, where he is the program leader of the Urologic Oncology Program. His specific clinical and academic interests center around minimally invasive therapies for prostate cancer, robotic surgery, and surgery for metastatic testicular cancer. He has performed over 1000 robotic prostate removals. Be sure to listen in today, to hear our excellent interview with Dr. Maroni, and to hear about what goes into the training of doctors for robotic surgery. Disclaimer: The Prostate Health Podcast is for informational purposes only. Nothing in this podcast should be construed as medical advice. For more information and counseling, you must contact your personal physician or urologist with questions about your unique situation. Show highlights: Dr. Maroni explains what robotic surgery is. How robotic surgery differs from traditional open surgery. Dr. Maroni compares purely laparoscopic prostate surgery with robotic laparoscopic prostate surgery. Dr. Maroni discusses the length of time that robotic technology has been around in clinical practice for the removal of the prostate for prostate cancer. There are several challenges in teaching surgical trainees how to do robotic prostate removal surgery. Dr. Maroni does several things to make sure that he and his team are doing the operation in the best possible way. The advances that Dr. Maroni has seen that have helped accelerate the learning curve for those learning how to perform a robotic prostate removal. The robotic device is very reliable, so it hardly ever breaks down. Dr. Maroni can easily pass the surgical instruments back and forth between himself and the trainee, so he can pick up and take over from the trainee within a second if necessary. The simulator and training videos have made the training a lot easier. The AUA has continued publishing some valuable video materials. Dr. Maroni shares his current approach to teaching urology residents the robotic prostatectomy. With the disease claiming the lives of approximately 300 Arkansans each year, the Arkansas Prostate Cancer Foundation stands ready to guide men and their families through the prostate cancer journey. “One of the first steps is we try to educate and raise awareness,” said Executive Director Chris Collier. “We participate in health fairs all over the state and the central theme is the need to be screened. That determines your baseline number and what you might need to do going forward.” Collier shared more about the Arkansas Prostate Cancer Foundation with host Zach Parker on the latest episode of The Ghidotti Podcast, including the full range of free services available through the foundation and debunking some of the misconceptions about screening.
September is almost over, but it's never too late to remember that it's also Prostate Cancer Awareness Month. My friend Illana Ostrin works for ZeroCancer.org and focuses on educating people about the disease. Here are some facts: It's the most commonly diagnosed cancer among American men, and one of the leading causes of cancer deaths among men -- every 17 minutes an American man dies from prostate cancer. That's a little more than 86 deaths per day and 31,620 this year. That's enough to fill an entire baseball stadium. Get informed, and play along with ten questions on prostate cancer in popular media written by Ilana. And see more about the fight at ZeroCancer.org.
