Guest: Shaheen Holloway, St. Peter’s University Head CoachIn this week's coaching conversation, St. Peter's University head coach Shaheen Holloway joins the podcast to discuss his play-hard and no-stars philosophy. In just his second season at the helm of the men’s basketball program, Holloway was named as 2020 The Rock MAAC Coach of the Year. Holloway guided the Peacocks to an 18-12 overall record and 14-6 MAAC mark, good enough for a second-place finish, which was the best finish since 2016-17. Under his guidance, the team made the biggest NET Rankings improvement in the MAAC and 14th nationally from 2018-19 to 2019-20, improving by 105 spots. The 14 league wins under Holloway tied the program record for most conference victories in a season and the team's nine MAAC home wins were the most ever by the program. Holloway brings superlative credentials to Jersey City after spending the past eight seasons as the associate head coach at his alma mater, Seton Hall, under Kevin Willard. With Holloway on the sideline serving as Willard's top assistant, Seton Hall became one of the BIG EAST's premier programs, winning the 2015-16 BIG EAST Tournament title for the first time since 1993. With Holloway serving as the lead recruiter, the Pirates experienced an abundant amount of success during his tenure, producing three Associated Press All-America honorable mention selections, 12 All-BIG EAST selections, three BIG EAST All-Rookies and 36 BIG EAST All-Academic team selections. Prior to joining Seton Hall, Holloway served on Willard's staff at Iona, where he helped turn the Gaels program around. Inheriting a team that went 2-28 in 2006-07, Holloway and Willard recruited and coached student-athletes to one of the greatest turnarounds in college basketball history as their 2009-10 team won 21 games to complete a 19-win turnaround in only the third year of the administration. During his original stint on the Seton Hall coaching staff, Holloway was an administrative assistant for head coach Bobby Gonzalez from 2006-07. Holloway started his coaching career serving as an assistant coach at the high school level at Bloomfield Tech. Holloway was a four-year standout at Seton Hall from 1996-00 and helped lead his team to the 2000 NCAA Sweet Sixteen, where he hit the game-winning layup in overtime to defeat Oregon in the NCAA first round. A 2012 inductee of the Seton Hall Athletics Hall of Fame, Holloway's preeminent playing career landed him in the Seton Hall record books as the all-time assist leader with 681, 17th in scoring with 1,588 points, fourth in steals with 231 steals, and eighth with 185 three-pointers in 116 games. In 2000, he was named the BIG EAST's Most Improved Player, while earning All-BIG EAST status three times and All-Metropolitan accolades in each of his four seasons at Seton Hall. After his collegiate success, Holloway played professionally in England for the Chester Jets and London Towers as well as a season in Ulm, Germany, and Istanbul, Turkey. Back in the U.S., he had stints with the Brooklyn Kings of the USBL and Newark, Las Vegas, and Chicago in the ABA. He was invited to three preseason NBA camps with the Knicks, Nets, and Golden State Warriors. Matt Langel, Helping Players Find Success Guest: Matt Langel, Colgate University Basketball Head Coach In this week’s basketball coaching conversation, Matt Langel, coach of Colgate University's men's basketball team, joins The Basketball Podcast to discuss methods of helping players to find success. Decision-making, shot selection, player development, and teaching players how to play are all covered. Langel has been running the Raiders' program since 2011, and set a record in 2019 in wins (24), wins in the Patriot League (13), and home wins (15) at Cotterell Court in Hamilton, New York. The result was Colgate's first Patriot League title since 1996. His success resulted in a contract extension until 2026-27. Prior to Colgate, Langel spent five seasons as an assistant coach at Temple University (2006-11), working for head coach Fran Dunphy; he also worked for Dunphy from 2004-06, when Dunphy coached Penn—Langel's alma mater. The just-retired Dunphy (from Temple) still means a lot to Langel. “There hasn’t been any important decision that I haven’t consulted him on, or thought deeply about what he would do,’’ Langel told the Philadelphia Inquirer after the Raiders won the Patriot League title. Originally from Moorestown, N.J., Langel spent four seasons playing for the Quakers (1996-2000), and was honored as the Ivy League and Big Five Player of the Week numerous times and received the Big Five's Most Improved Player Award. Langel finished his career in red and blue with 1,191 points. Atlantic City of the USBL drafted Langel in 2000, and he went to camps for the NBA's Seattle SuperSonics and the Philadelphia 76ers. His pro career took place in Europe: Chene BC in Switzerland; ALM Evreux Basket in France Pro A; MBC and Hagan in German Bundesliga I; Eiffel Towers in Holland. Three-time NBA Champion and one of Houston's Top 10 Players of all-time, Mario Elie. We discuss Mario's incredible journey from New York's Power Memorial High School, through to becoming a three-time NBA Champion - a perfect example of hard work, determination and achievement. Many years before he joined the Golden State Warriors, Mario was teammates with future Hall of Famer, Chris Mullin. We reminisce about Mario's HS career and decision to play for American International College. He had a stellar run and was named Conference Rookie of the Year (1982), three-time All-American and led his division II team to the Elite Eight in the 1985 NCAA Tournament. He was inducted into AIC’s Hall of Fame in 2005, and earlier this year, had his #41 jersey retired. The Milwaukee Bucks selected Elie with pick 160 (7th round) in the 1985 NBA Draft. His first NBA game was more than five seasons later (Dec 28, 1990). In the interim, Mario played in numerous countries across Europe - Ireland, Argentina and Portugal, to name a few - further developing his game. He returned to home soil and played in developmental leagues across America, including the USBL, WBL & CBA (where he would become an All-Star). In December, 1990, Mario's NBA opportunity arrived, courtesy of then-76ers GM, Gene Shue. The countless miles of travel and perseverance paid off. After a brief stint with Philadelphia, Mario signed with Golden State, where he played alongside the famed 'Run TMC' (Hardaway, Richmond & Mullin). Two seasons later (1993), he was a Trail Blazer. We chat about the moment Mario found out he was traded to the Rockets, and deep dive into his career with Houston, where he played five seasons and won two NBA Championships. In the do-or-die Game 7 of the 1995 Western Conference Semi-Finals, he made one of the biggest shots in NBA history – affectionately known as the ‘Kiss of Death’. He shares the details of how that famous show of emotion, came to be. Prior to the (1999) lockout-shortened season, Mario signed as a free agent with San Antonio, where he won his third NBA title. He talks about his key role in Sean Elliott's Memorial Day Miracle and the leadership of Hall of Famer, David Robinson, and (future Hall of Famer) a young Tim Duncan. I even find a way to briefly talk about another teammate of Mario's, Australian legend, Andrew Gaze. Recently, the Houston Rockets celebrated the 20th anniversary of their back-to-back NBA Championships. Mario talks about that experience and the joy of re-connecting with many of his friends and former teammates, including Vernon Maxwell, Sam Cassell, Robert Horry, Clyde Drexler, Hakeem Olajuwon, Otis Thorpe, Kenny Smith, Chucky Brown, Rudy Tomjanovich and more. We round out the discussion, by chatting about Mario's coaching background. He has worked as an NBA assistant coach for the best part of ten years. He discusses those experiences, his future ambitions at the highest level and the ultimate moment of his career, to date.
