For this episode of The All-Around Adventure Podcast, I'm joined by Marine Corps Veteran, podcast host, and standup comedian, Chris Palmitessa. This is Chris's second appearance on The All-Around Adventure Podcast. He joined me a couple of years ago and we had a great discussion on how to cultivate your warrior soul. Though much has changed since he last came on the show. Back in 2020, he moved over 3,000 miles across the country from Los Angeles, California to South Florida. He also began pursuing standup comedy. And has appeared in, as well as hosted, several shows in the Miami metro area. I've had the opportunity to see him, along with other Veteran comedians, perform in Miami a few months back and they were really funny! Along with doing standup comedy, Chris is also the host of the Warrior Soul Podcast. A show committed to helping the US Veteran community, and anyone else willing to listen, to live their best lives. In this episode, Chris tells us about his decision to move across the country and how he's adapted to the change. He also talks about his transition to comedy and some of the dark humor that is utilized by much of the Veteran community. And we also have a discussion on taking risks in life and how to express yourself creatively. Getting More Veterans in Office with Emily Cherniack

Emily Cherniack is steeped in the traditions of servant leadership. From her service in AmeriCorps and employment with City Year AmeriCorps, to being part of the founding team of Be the Change — where she led a coalition of over 200 organizations to engage 250,000 people for a Day of Action in support of the $6 billion Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act of 2009 — Emily has worked tirelessly to serve our country and support others who serve. In 2018, Emily was named to the Politico 50 as one of the 50 "thinkers, doers, and dreamers driving politics." Emily's path to politics came when her boss and mentor, Alan Khazei, decided to run for the US Senate in 2009. Khazei asked Emily to become his Deputy Campaign Manager and, although he was defeated, Emily learned a great deal from his campaign and the power of political leaders who chose to serve country before self. This experience led Emily to conclude that our current system for recruiting political talent is broken. The current talent pipeline is intentionally exclusive, and has significant barriers that prevent transformational leaders from successfully running for office; the only way to change that is to change the pipeline. New Politics was founded in 2013 to address exactly that. Emily graduated from George Washington University with a Bachelor's Degree in Criminal Justice and Psychology and a Masters Degree in Education Policy. She lives in Boston. Disclaimer: All political views expressed by Emily during the podcast are hers and do not necessarily represent the views of the Warrior Soul Podcast or its Host. The Warrior Soul Podcast is not affiliated with any specific political party or perspective and merely seeks to bring tools, tactics, strategies, and ideas to the US Military Veteran Community to help its members to live their best lives. That mission entails bringing on guests from multiple political perspectives whether the Host agrees with them or not. It is our hope that anyone who disagrees with Emily can look past that to see the tools she brings to the table to help the Veteran community get more of its members into public office.

Josh Guerrero is a Marine Corps Veteran, archeologist, podcaster, and adventurer.  In his day to day life, Josh travels the world unearthing remnants from the past and has dedicated much of his time to training others to do the same.  The last time I had Josh on the Warrior Soul Podcast, he was prepping for a trek through South America to raise money for American Veterans Archeological Recovery (AVAR), an organization that provides training for Veterans in Archeology.  When the Covid 19 pandemic took the world in its grasp, Josh could no longer head to South America. Like a good Marine, he pivoted, and decided to hike across the state of Michigan along the North Country Trail.  Josh started the trek in late summer, and completed his journey in the second week of December. Assisted by "Trail Angels,"who provided him with food, supplies, and sometimes shelter, Josh averaged 15 miles a day during his trek.  Along the way, Josh raised money for AVAR through his GoFundMe at https://www.gofundme.com/f/wolverinewalk.  He has left the GoFundMe open to continue to raise funds for this outstanding organization.  I caught up with Josh just a few days after he'd finished his trek. His powerful mindset and desire to help others through his passion for archeology and adventure is truly amazing, and I'm proud to have him as a Marine brother.  You can follow Josh on Instagram at http://www.instagram.com/allaroundadventure

I first learned about Nigel Guisinger after listening to his interview on the Bigger Pockets Business Podcast with Jay and Carol Scott.  Nigel paid for his college education by working construction for a local excavation company. This lead to him entering the equipment rental business where he worked with thousands of businesses to help with their project needs.  After the economic downturn and continually seeing businesses fail in his community, Nigel decided to do something about it. He bought an appliance store in 2013, and then grew it from $350,000 in annual sales to over $9 million in a four year period.  Nigel is passionate about American business, and he's on a quest to get other passionate people to save businesses in the midst of the Covid-19 crisis. He began www.yoursmallbusinesshub.com in an effort to help others to buy, sell, and save businesses.  Nigel came onto the Warrior Soul Podcast to encourage the veteran community to take up this fight. I don't know many people who've ever truly failed in life. That may sound optimistic, but I also don't know many people who've ever tried to succeed anything truly meaningful. Most people I know have taken the safe route in life.  That's understandable. The safe route means security, paychecks, and no struggle. Who wouldn't want that? The flip side of the coin is that I also know a lot of unhappy people. People who hate their jobs and hate their lives because of it. I also know a lot of people who are unhappy with their bodies and with their health.  What good is it to be completely safe but extraordinarily unhappy? The good news is that you don't need to risk it all to begin improving your life.   If you want to start a business, in the internet age you can start a side hustle with minimal overhead and a bit of extra work.  If you want to train but don't think you have the time, you could be doing pushups and squats in your own living room.  And if you're having doubts, ask yourself: what's the worst thing that could happen? The answer is probably nothing too bad.  The Warrior Soul Podcast is brought to you by FBomb nutrition, makers of delicious high fat-low carbohydrate snacks, like their amazing macadamia nut butter. Akshay Nanavati is an author, speaker, coach, and veteran of the United States Marine Corps who developed the concept of fearvana.  According to Akshay, Fearvana helps you to do three things:: 1. find your worthy struggle 2. live your worthy struggle 3. fall in love with every minute of the journey The main idea behind Fearvana is that, if you don't go out there and find your struggle, another struggle will find you anyway, but it will do so when you're unprepared and unwilling to face it.  Fearvana is based on hard-won wisdom that Akshay obtained after years of going down the wrong path. Like many veterans, Akshay returned from combat with many demons.  Those demons led him toward alcohol abuse and a severe downward spiral. After he hit the bottom of the barrel, he decided that he needed to do something. He put years into studying neuroscience, spirituality, and the depths of his own endurance.  Since embracing Fearvana, Akshay has become an ultra-endurance athlete. He's trekked across the arctic, climbed the world's highest mountains, and stretched what he thought were the boundaries of his own capabilities.  To learn more about Akshay and Fearvana, check out his web site at https://fearvana.com/. Go to https://beyondhomosapien.com/phoenix/ to check out the Phoenix beta program. Soul Healing For Warriors Soul healing is a topic that rings of hippy woowoo nonsense. Especially when considering an audience of military veterans, connection with the soul is oftentimes seen as the realm of charlatans. However, a deep warrior culture has survived in our civilization. These warriors walk in the footsteps of Samurai, Cherokee Braves, and medieval knights. At the same time as these individuals practice violence, they also teach the paths of stoicism, mastery of skill, and honor. In 2020, we can learn about warrior cultures and how these teachings approach the human soul. When done, this work reveals a tradition of chivalry, martial excellence, and ceremonial practice. Warrior soul culture runs deep. Young men and women feel this call inside their blood. In my book, I describe how and why I joined the US Army back in college. You can read that story here. As a result of joining the Army, I also found Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and developed a passion for physical fitness. During my time in the Army, I led Soldiers, managed operations, and learned from capable mentors all over the world. It was a wonderful experience that left me with a deep respect for the teachings of warrior cultures all over the world. A deep connection with soul is needed in 2020 and the time for soul healing is at hand. Chris Albert is a marine who hosts the Warrior Soul Podcast. On his show, Chris talks about mindset, holistic living, physical fitness, and healing for veterans. When it comes to the topic of understanding warrior culture, Chris Albert is a demonstrated expert. Chris Albert came on the Beyond Homo Sapien Podcast to talk about soul healing, plant medicine, and mindset. Check it out! On this show, Paul Tokgozoglu and Chris Albert discuss the healing potential of psychedelic plant medicines. Inside of warrior cultures, young men and women have experienced initiation through communion with the plant teachers. Thanks to emerging research at places like Johns Hopkins, we have now entered into a greater conversation of the magical healing properties of plant medicine. Currently, researchers at foundations like MAPS are pursuing the legalization of substances like MDMA in the treatment of PTSD. This research is groundbreaking and opens up new potential for soul healing for warriors.

Then Craig decided to bring Fred home to the United States.  The book, Craig and Fred has inspired thousands of people from across the country and across the globe.  I've been lucky enough to befriend Craig and Fred the Afghan, and to get to know both of them. This past week, we had Bas Rutten on as a guest, and it brought a question to mind: what are you willing to fight for? Most people would answer with something like their country, or their family, and that's all admirable.  But in this episode, I pose it in a different way: what would you be willing to go on the offensive for?  Think about it. Most of the time, we live our lives passively. Even fighting for your country or fighting for your family requires that you fight in response to something.  But in life, if you live passively, things don't tend to go so well. You end up constantly on your heels, waiting for something to fall into your lap.  In this episode, Chris discusses why you need to go on the offensive when it comes to your hopes and your dreams.  The Warrior Soul Podcast is brought to you by FBomb nutrition, makers of delicious high fat-low carbohydrate snacks, like their amazing macadamia nut butter. October was an awesome month for the Warrior Soul Podcast.  Our inspiring guests for October included Robert Greene, Bing West, Nick Koumalatsos, Dr. Kirk Parsley, Rob Jones, and Vincent "Rocco" Vargas. Civilians and veterans who've gone on to build businesses, write best-selling books, and inspire thousands.  It is such an honor for me to be able to do this work for the Veteran Community and I am so grateful for this opportunity.  But things weren't always this way. Six years ago, I was literally living out of my car. I was broke, sick, and had few options to move forward.  It wasn't until I stopped feeling bad about myself and started working on the things that would move me forward that my life changed.  For far too long, the US Military Veteran Community has been treated like a group of victims by the popular media and by ourselves.  We aren't victims. We are the sleeping giant in this country, and we are capable of shaping it's future.  My mission is to empower Veterans to live their absolute best lives with the content we provide. He's spoken to thousands of Veterans about these struggles.  In the past, he dealt with these issues like many of us have: with humor. As an influencer, Vinny played the character "Rocco" on Matt Best's YouTube Channel. He was known as the "funny" guy.  But as Vinny says during this interview "dick and fart" jokes weren't cutting it anymore. Over the past two years, he's worked to cultivate a more serious image. Not for fame or fortune, but because he believes that it's what the Veteran Community needs.  He still loves humor. It takes the edge off of things. He still considers Matt Best and the rest of the guys great friends and he has the deepest of respect for what they've done together.  But now he's also working for a larger vision: to teach the Veteran Community that they are not victims and that they are capable of fostering strength, resilience, and prosperity in their civilian lives.  We discuss:  Vinny's transition into serious acting why he no longer drinks alcohol the difference between the characters he's played and him as a person why family is the most important thing to him what his vision is for his future and for the future of the Veteran Community and a whole lot more The Warrior Soul Podcast is sponsored by FBOMB Nutrition. Success Tips: Burn the Ships

Growing up, many of us are taught to have something to fall back on. A fail-safe in case our plans for life don't go exactly as planned.  This can be a useful strategy, but sometimes having a fall back plan can shoot you in the foot. Some of the most successful people found their footing when there were no other options.  This episode will discuss when it's appropriate for you to "burn the ships." This phrase refers to a story about Hernan Cortes. He had aspirations to conquer Mexico, but his men were fearful. They wanted to sail back to Cuba where there was an established settlement. Sensing the anxiety in his men, Cortes secretly ordered that his ships be destroyed. His men found him out, but by that point, the ships had already been destroyed. He told his men that they could either be lords of Mexico, or they could sit there and die.  Focused and motivated to avoid death, his men fell into line, and Cortes conquered Mexico with just a few hundred men.  I learned this strategy from Robert Greene's 33 Strategies of War. I recently spoke to him in an interview for the Warrior Soul Podcast, and it will be published on September 16.  If you found this episode helpful, please consider subscribing to the Warrior Soul Podcast and writing us a five-star rating and review on itunes. Warrior Notes: How to Be More Productive

The Warrior Soul Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 11, 2019 33:25

Many people overcomplicate productivity.  They invest in expensive programs and planners, set up complicated systems, and at the end of the day, they set themselves up for failure.  And when we fail, if we feel like we wasted a day or didn't get everything done that we would have liked to, we can often fall into a negative thought pattern that leads to depression.  Beyond this, the thoughts of what we should have done stay trapped in our minds. This tends to increase anxiety, interrupt our sleep, and in turn, translates to more lack of productivity the next day.  So one of the biggest factors in getting you to live a happier, healthier, and freer life, ironically, is by disciplining yourself to get those most important tasks in your life done in a timely and efficient manner.  But knowing this, where do most people go wrong? It starts by understanding this: we chronically overestimate the amount of stuff we can do in a 24 hour period.  Essentially, we stuff so much into our workdays that we get overwhelmed and overwhelm leads to procrastination.  Generally, when you find yourself mindlessly scrolling on social media when you should be working, it's not because you'd rather be looking at Instagram.  It's because you just don't know what to do at that moment.  So the biggest factor in avoiding procrastination is to make it as clear as possible what you're going to be working on.  So what I want to do here in this episode is to give you a few best practices that you can implement right here and right now after you listen to this show to help you avoid procrastination and get more done in your day.  I'll also include photographs of my daily planner in the show notes so you can see what I'm talking about.  You don't need an expensive planner, just get yourself a notebook. It can be a green monster, like those we used in the Corps, or it can be a moleskin.  Planning - You need to set time aside to plan your months, your weeks, and your days.  On the last Sunday of every month, I plan the month ahead. I just number the days on a single page, and I use it as a radar. Any big events or deadlines I have for that month, I note there next to the number corresponding with the date.  Each week, on Sunday, I plan out the next 6 days. I do this by making six boxes on a page. Then I separate my tasks based on the day. For example, I Mondays are my writing days, that's when I draft out episodes for the podcast, Tuesdays are the days when I record my solo episodes, I use Wednesdays to write out show notes, Thursdays I work on building new products, and on Fridays and Saturdays I handle podcast planning and calls with clients. Separating tasks like this keeps me from overloading too much in any given day.  Each night before I finish work, I plan the next day by writing out the tasks I need to accomplish. I work in two blocks of time. In the early morning, I'll work on my hardest tasks - creative work that I need to do for the show. Then at 11AM each day, I put on my workout clothes, train for an hour, and then I return to work. In the afternoons, I handle tasks that take less brain power, like phone calls and administrative tasks like posting videos or blogs. One very important thing that I do each day is I make it a point to connect with one important person from my network each day. That's normally a note, an email, or a call just to check on them to see how they're doing.  Calendar, once everything is written in my journal, I put everything into my mobile calender and I stick to the schedule there. Flexibility - One big thing we all know is that any plan, even the best of them, are subject to change. Inevitably there's going to be something that comes up like an emergency or a fire you've got to put out. What's important here is that you don't get discouraged. So when I'm setting up my calendar for the day, I ensure that I include buffer time. This is time for transition from one task to another where I can catch up. I make sure that I have at least an hour of buffer time at the end of each day to close open loops.  Solo hour - one thing I learned as a squad leader in the Marine Corps was to be up at least an hour before any of my Marines. That gave me time to get myself straight, get my gear ready, and think. When my Marines finally got up, I could then be present to advise them and lead. I do the same thing today. I wake up at least an hour before anyone in my house is up. My clients aren't awake, no one is trying to get in touch with me, and this gives me time to meditate, read, pray, and get my mind ready for the day ahead.  Finally, when I'm working on something, I do everything possible to get rid of all distractions. I avoid social media unless it's a scheduled slot for me to interact or post. I turn my phone on airplane mode, and I run an app called Brain FM that plays focus music to help me concentrate, be more creative, and calm my nerves.  Above all, the absolute key to success with this process is this: prioritizing your life. One thing we do as human beings too much is going after shiny objects that distract us from what we truly want to do. If you're going after several different big goals, then your focus won't be where it should be. Pick one main focus each month when it comes to your goals and focus on that.  If you found this episode helpful, please consider subscribing to the Warrior Soul Podcast and writing us a five-star rating and review on itunes. August was a tough month. After attending a memorial service for a friend who passed away, another friend, the man who organized that service, passed away suddenly.  Several days later, I got stricken with sickness: Hand, Foot, and Mouth Virus.  Beyond that, business hadn't quite been going as expected and I faced dire financial circumstances.  Angry, sad, and in a high degree of pain, I began searching for answers. This is why I began reading Viktor Frankl's classic book, Man's Search for Meaning. The book details Frankl's 3-year experience in a Nazi concentration camp and how he survived by finding meaning in his captivity. It also explores how he dealt with life after he was freed when he learned that his wife, unborn child, and his entire family were murdered.  The truth is that none of us are immune to suffering. We all face tragedy, hardship, and ultimately death. The key to life is in how we choose to deal with our suffering.  Do we allow it to break us? Or do we allow it to make us stronger, wiser, and more capable humans? These are the important themes discussed in this amazing book, and we explore them in this week's Warrior Notes Episode.  To purchase Man's Search for Meaning on Amazon: https://amzn.to/2MT10XI When you use this link, a small portion of your purchase will go toward funding the Warrior Soul Podcast.  The Warrior Soul Podcast empowers US Military Veterans, and anyone else willing to listen, to live their absolute best lives by delivering tools, tactics, strategies, and ideas to help them to become stronger, smarter, and more capable humans.  Please support the show by sharing these episodes out and by writing us a rating and review on itunes.  The Warrior Soul Podcast is made possible with the help of our sponsors at FBOMB Nutrition. In that time, we've interviewed some amazing guests and we've spoken about some very important subjects for the veteran community.  In this episode, I discuss why the Warrior Soul Podcast exists, how we are expanding our mission, and what the future looks like.  As I mention in this episode, there is a large graveyard of veteran oriented podcasts on iTunes who do not publish anymore.  It's not because they failed. It's because they couldn't be consistent and they stopped publishing.  I feel immense gratitude for being able to do this and to serve this amazing community.  During the show, I also take you through the list of resources we provide as an organization ranging from this podcast to YouTube. On them, you will find tools and strategies to help you with fitness, your career, your business, and your relationships.  If you would like to support this show you can do so in the following ways: Join our community: The Warrior Soul Agoge Private Facebook Group Support Warrior Soul's Mission Our shirts are made by Marines for all Veterans. How to Master the Highest Paying Profession in the World with Charlie Cina

Charlie Cina is the author of the book Expose and Close: Simple Networking, Marketing and Sales Techniques to Activate, Acquire, and Achieve Massive Success.  He's worked in high-level sales environments for the last three decades, building sales teams and driving revenue for some of the top companies in the world across various industries. He's also sold into multiple billion-dollar casino projects on the Las Vegas strip, including the Wynn Resort, Palazzo Hotel, Mandarin Oriental, and the MGM Grand.  Currently, Charlie represents Lightspeed VT, one of the top companies in the world of Virtual Interactive Online Training.  But if you were lucky enough to meet Charlie at a conference, or in passing at a coffee shop, that's not what he'd tell you at first. Charlie would tell you that he "empowers speakers, trainers, and subject matter experts to monetize their content worldwide in three easy steps."  For Charlie, success starts with telling people who you are, what you do, what problems you can help them solve, or how you can make their lives better.  His recently released book Expose and Close is one of the easiest to read, most digestible, and helpful books on sales that I have ever read.  In a world where everyone has the next "trick" or technological "hack," Charlie offers a refreshing trip back to basic skills that could make you extremely successful in all areas of your life.  Key Lessons Your name is powerful. Talk to people, give them your name and ask them for theirs. According to Charlie, there are life-changing opportunities within arms reach of you every time you go out in public. The simple act of approaching people and saying "Hi my name is ______, what's your name?" is responsible for a large part of Charlie's success.  Don't tell people what you are, tell them who you are, what you do, and how you can help them. As I wrote before, Charlie doesn't go around telling people that he's a salesman. He tells them "I empower speakers, trainers, and subject matter experts to monetize their content worldwide in three easy steps." This simple statement gets people wanting to know more, while the "I'm a salesman" statement would have been a non-starter for most people.  Dress for success. You are a package, and you need to wrap your package effectively if you want people to be interested in you.  It's not all about technology. In the internet age, it's easy to think that technology could do all of the work for us, but Charlie thinks this is a mistake. Though he says social media is important, the old fashioned techniques of cold calling and knocking on doors are still vital forms of communication.  Advice for Veterans Charlie was extremely enthusiastic about coming onto the Warrior Soul Podcast and speaking to our audience of veterans because he sees so much potential in the US Military Veteran community.  Many of you have been through things that most people could not grasp. You have dealt with people of all types, and you have overcome obstacles that would make many people break.  If you can do that, you have what it takes to be a successful salesperson or entrepreneur.  Whether you are in sales or not, I highly suggest that you get a copy of Charlie's book by clicking on its image. Additionally, Charlie just released his new virtual training course at www.exposeandclose.com. Currently, he's offering this course at a massive discount.  Normally, it runs for $1,000, but it's being sold for a limited time for our audience at $297. I enrolled in the training myself, and I can tell you the   Join our community: The Warrior Soul Agoge Private Facebook Group Support Warrior Soul's Mission Our shirts are made by Marines for all Veterans. How to Break Out of a Rut

Life definitely has its ups and its downs, and all of us find ourselves in a situation where we feel stuck at one time or another.  Normally, self-help gurus will tell you that, to get out of a rut, you need to write down goals and develop an action plan. While these are valuable exercises, the problem with this is that, because you're in a rut in the first place, the path forward isn't easy to come by.  As such, writing down goals or attempting to create a vision can be a near meaningless experience and a huge waste of time if you aren't in the right mindset.  This episode will take you through what you need to do to get to that point step-by-step, point-by-point.  The Warrior Soul Podcast is sponsored by FBOMB nutrition.
