Do it right, or don't do it at all. In episode 179, Nick Koumalatsos returns to Veteran Made to talk about his work as a consulting producer on The Punisher: One Last Kill and his collaboration with Jon Bernthal to bring Frank Castle back to the screen with honesty, weight, and realism. Nick shares how his own background as a Force Recon Marine and special operations veteran helped shape the character, from the tactical details to the deeper emotional truth of a man who has lost his identity, his purpose, and the people who mattered most to him. We talk about how Nick's book, Excommunicated Warrior, influenced parts of Frank's arc, why the story needed to show rock bottom instead of explain it, and what it means to portray veterans and special operations service members as human beings rather than untouchable icons. We also get into the craft behind the film itself — working with Jon Bernthal and the stunt team to build realistic action sequences, refining weapons manipulation and close quarter combat, and understanding the difference between what is real in life and what reads as real on camera. This is a conversation about transition, accountability, purpose, brotherhood, pain, and the responsibility of telling these stories the right way in the most grounded depiction of a modern veteran in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. If you've been worried about the men you love—or you are one—this conversation is for you.Dr. Jody Carrington sits down with Nick Koumalatsos to talk about male loneliness and brotherhood, the state of men's emotional health, and why so many men are carrying crushing pressure without the words or space to name it. Nick makes a bold case: men aren't struggling because they're weak. They're struggling because they're isolated.Together, they unpack the “lone wolf” myth, the weight men often feel to keep performing no matter what, and how stress, anger, exhaustion, and disconnection can quietly harden into burnout, addiction, or despair. We all know veterans who have battled the transition from military service to civilian life. Nick Koumalatsos was a Marine raider who can certainly speak to that. After discharging from the military after 12 years of service, he battled that adjustment, going through divorce, bankruptcy, and even serious thoughts of suicide. It took him many years to figure out a formula that would work for him to pull himself out of these abysses. But throughout his life, Nick had always been seeking an angle to move up in the world. This led him to start his first business, and he's now run multiple businesses. The one that gets him most fired up is Johnny Slicks, which makes organic personal grooming products right here in the USA. Nick describes how they have created a strong family-like company atmosphere as they do all production and distribution in-house instead of farming these aspects out. He has also founded Core Medical Group, whose differentiator is providing personal care and service for men who need to determine whether they should explore testosterone replacement therapy. He's also created a transformative coaching group called Agoge that currently includes men from ages 17 to 74. It's a very hands-on community to help men overcome challenges. The lessons include Mastering Yourself, Leading Your Family, Mastering Your Finances where Nick shares what the wealthy don't tell the rest of us about, and Leaders Creating More Leaders – creating your own legacy. He has put a tremendous number of resources and lessons on his website, nickkoumalatsos.com including a free course well worth checking out. Related to this, Nick is leading a retreat in Kona in October for those who feel stuck in life or having a lot of stops and starts that prevent them from making progress. If that's all not enough, he's helping add his Marine experience to the production of the upcoming Punisher movie. You'll be able to feel Nick's abundant energy in this chat and learn a lot about how you can take control of your own inaction and/or overcome serious challenges like Nick did to create a fulfilling life helping others in myriad ways.Nick Koumalatsosnickkoumalatsos.cominfo@nickkoumalatsos.comInstagram and Threads @nickkoumalatsosFacebook Nick KoumalatsosBill Stahlsilly_billy@msn.comFacebook Bill StahlInstagram and Threads @stahlor and @we_are_superman_podcastYouTube We Are Superman PodcastPlease support Team Leadville and Warriors' Ascent help prevent veteran suicide! This one might hit hard — and if it does, GOOD.Because the truth is, most men today are soft, lost, and passive. They lack discipline. They have no direction. They crumble under pressure. But it's not entirely their fault — it is, however, their responsibility to FIX IT.
This Father's Day, we're not just handing out compliments or coffee mugs. We're calling out the men who choose to lead with purpose. The dads who show up even when they're tired. The ones who carry the weight of responsibility, not because it's easy — but because it matters.Whether you're a dad, want to be one, or were raised by a great one — this is a reminder of what real leadership looks like.To all the fathers who lead with heart — this one's for you.

Your extraordinary marriage starts here: www.thedadedge.com/25questions Nick Koumalatsos is a former Marine Raider, entrepreneur, and author dedicated to helping others grow through physical fitness, mental resilience, and personal development. He leads Agoge, a coaching company that empowers individuals to pursue their potential by developing strength, confidence, and leadership. Today, Nick Koumalatsos shares the powerful impact of in-person connections through activities like jiu-jitsu, training sessions, and shared meals. He discussed the Squire program, a transformative rite of passage for young men that Nick personally embraced by guiding his nephew through it, highlighting the crucial need for positive male role models in young boys' lives. The conversation evolved to address the challenges of modern parenting, particularly the tendency to overprotect children at the expense of their personal growth and resilience. This led to a broader discussion about the importance of generational wisdom transfer and traditional rites of passage, with both hosts emphasizing the need for parents to create environments where children can develop both physically and emotionally through facing and overcoming challenges. www.thedadedge.com/502 www.thedadedge.com/alliance www.nickkoumalatsos.com www.thedadedge.com/squire
