Show Notes Lemuel: I am Lemuel Gonzalez, repentant sinner, and along with Amity Armstrong, your heavenly host, I invite you to find a place in the pew for today's painless Sunday School lesson. Without Works. Amity: Less than a week after President Trump formed a Justice department task force fighting Anti-Chrisitian Bias, Reverend Dr. William Barber II - a founding director of the Center for Public Theology and Public Policy at Yale Divinity School, National board member of the NAACP, and MacArthur Fellow - was arrested for leading a public prayer. The Rev. Dr. and two others were arrested for “crowding, obstructing, and incommoding.” The prayers started out quietly and as the ministers began to raise their voices they were told to leave or suffer arrest. Rev. Dr. Barber had been at the capitol all day, part of a rally held behind the Supreme Court. That rally, organized by Repairers of the Breach, a national team of organizers, religious leaders, artists, strategists and advocates centering and elevating leaders who have been directly impacted by systemic injustice. focused specifically on how budget cuts would impact women and children. The interdenominational speakers included Jewish, Muslim, and Christian leaders as well as the president of the National Urban League and a representative of the Institute of Policy Studies. According to a written statement, the rally was meant to draw attention to, “... immoral budget cuts and proposed budget cuts being pursued in Washington D.C. at the expense of the poor, working people, children, women, and families.” Lemuel: Jesus taught that religious faith was a private experience, not a public one. In Matthew 6:5-6 he rails against public demonstrations of faith. Amity: “And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have their reward in full. But when you pray , go into your room, close your door and pray to your Father who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.” Lemuel: That scripture, cited often against the demonstrative prayers of conservative and evangelical ministers, is being turned on Reverend Barber, and his associates. There is a larger consideration here. That this prayer meeting was a form of protest directed at the policy makers who are ruining people's lives. As we stress here, Jesus' message, the only message of Christianity, is redemption and salvation, and mercy. Jesus was baptised by his cousin, John in the Jordan river, and went into the wilderness, there tempted by the devil. He came out of the desert, wandering into his dusty childhood town. He has been tempted and proved, fined down by severe abstention, blasted by the merciless sun, his eyes blazing with purpose. He attends the Sabbath service, as is asked to read the scripture that day. Amity: “ …the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him, he found the place where it is written: “The spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free, to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor. Then he rolled up the scroll and gave it back to the attendant and sat down. The eyes of everyone on the synagogue were fastened on him. He began by saying to them, “Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.” - Luke 4:17-21 Lemuel: This is the message. This is what this meeting was meant to do, and why these prayers were offered up. ** Our Internet home: www.withoutworkspodcast.com** Find us on Twitter: @WithoutWorksPod Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/withoutworks Email @ withoutworkspod@gmail.com Newsweek Episcopal News Network Breach Repairers

The Water Defenders: How Ordinary People Saved A Country from Corporate Greed - Book Talks

“Water is an issue that can unite people. Water is life. Their slogans were always very powerfully pro water, less anti mining. And through that and their boldness and reaching out to unlikely allies, they were able to gather quite a force.” Overview Water is life. Countless communities across the world, from Flint, Michigan to the Standing Rock Reservation to the Gualcarque River in Honduras, have used this phrase as a rallying cry against powerful corporations that value profits over the environment and the health of local communities. In 2002, a small group of citizens in El Salvador joined this global community of water defenders when representatives from multinational mining company Pac Rim appeared in their home province of Cabañas. This ignited a people's fight against corporate power that would last for over a decade. In The Water Defenders: How Ordinary People Saved A Country from Corporate Greed, Robin Broad and John Cavanagh tell the harrowing, inspiring saga of El Salvador's fight – and historic victory – to save their water, and their communities, from Big Gold.    Based on over a decade of research and their own role as international allies of the community groups in El Salvador, Robin Broad and John Cavanagh unspool this untold story, replete with corporate greed; a transnational lawsuit at a secretive World Bank tribunal in Washington, DC; violent threats; murders; and, surprisingly, victory. The husband-and-wife duo immerses the reader in the lives of the Salvadoran villagers, the journeys of the local activists who sought the truth about the effects of gold mining on the environment, and the behind-the-scenes maneuverings of the corporate mining executives. The Water Defenders demands that we examine our assumptions about progress and prosperity, while providing valuable lessons for other communities and allies fighting against destructive corporations in the United States and across the world. The Water Defenders: How Ordinary People Saved A Country from Corporate Greed Reviews “Broad and Cavanagh offer a practical David-versus-Goliath playbook for those who would mobilize both domestic and international forces to halt corporate abuses and to place the long-term welfare of communities above short-term financial gain.”  — Foreign Affairs “The book is an environmentalist playbook, a how-to guide for activists seeking to defeat a power structure that is rigged in favor of their opponents.”  — The American Prospect “Challenges conventional wisdom about activism, ‘the poor,' and where real power really lies.” —Guernica “Part history, part environmental organizing case study, the book chronicles the community's struggle against the mine from the early 2000s to the campaign's unlikely conclusion in 2017, when El Salvador became the first country in Latin America to completely ban metal mining.” —National Catholic Reporter “It is rare, in the world of corporate power, to have a story where David beats Goliath. And rarer still to have one that reads like a fast-paced thriller.” —Adam Hochschild, author of King Leopold's Ghost and Rebel Cinderella “Bravo to the courageous Salvadorans—and their likely and unlikely allies—who prove that victories against overwhelming odds are possible. . . . The water defenders of El Salvador and their international partners provide a powerful guidebook, poignantly retold by Broad and Cavanagh, of how the struggles for justice in the United States can link with allies abroad to build power and win.” —Opal Tometi, cofounder of Black Lives Matter “Broad and Cavanagh are masterful storytellers. The words, deeds, and stories of people in El Salvador come alive so vividly in these pages to reinforce what we in the Poor People's Campaign in the United States know well: the most powerful defenders of water, of the environment—of justice across the board—are poor people.” —Rev. Dr. William Barber II, national co-chair of the Poor People's Campaign author of The Third Reconstruction About the Authors Robin Broad is an expert in international development and was awarded a prestigious Guggenheim fellowship for her work surrounding mining in El Salvador, as well as two previous MacArthur fellowships. A professor at American University, she served as an international economist in the US Treasury Department, in the US Congress, and at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. Broad and her husband, John Cavanagh, have been involved in the Salvadoran gold mining saga since 2009. They helped build the network of international allies that spearheaded the global fight against mining in El Salvador. They have co-authored several previous books together. John Cavanagh is director of the Washington, DC-based Institute for Policy Studies, an organization that collaborates with the Poor People's Campaign and other dynamic social movements to turn ideas into action for peace, justice, and the environment. Previously, he worked with the United Nations to research corporate power. Cavanagh and his wife, Robin Broad, have been involved in the Salvadoran gold mining saga since 2009. They helped build the network of international allies that spearheaded the global fight against mining in El Salvador. They have coauthored several previous books together. I first learned of Jonathan when I heard him interviewed on a podcast. His work sounded very interesting, so I bought his book, “Revolution of Values: Reclaiming Public Faith for the Common Good.”  I ended up reading it twice. An evangelical Christian who connects with the broad spiritual tradition and its monastic witnesses, Jonathan is a leader in the Red Letter Christian movement and the Poor People’s Campaign: A National Call for Moral Revival. He speaks often about emerging Christianity and faith in public life to churches and conferences across the denominational spectrum and has given lectures at dozens of universities and seminaries, including Calvin College, MIT, Bethel, Duke, Yale, Princeton, Jewish Theological, Perkins, Wake Forrest, St. John’s, DePaul, and Baylor. Now, he is making his big break as a guest on this podcast! I hope you enjoy this interview. You can connect with Jonathan through the School for Conversion or on his website. In politics, there's always a heavy focus on making the country work for the middle class. But the stark reality is there are 140 million poor and low-income people in this country. And if we don't figure out how to mobilize around poverty -- to name it, expose the truth of it, and fix it -- we won't be able break it. Reverend Dr. William Barber II has been working on this moral cause for years and joins Pete to discuss the truth about poverty and systemic racism in this nation, his movement of fusion politics, and his success with political organizing during the pandemic. Today on Sojourner Truth: We bring you part one of our national coverage of a two-hour mass assembly entitled, Voting is Power Unleashed: National Moral Monday Mass Assembly and Teach In, organized by the Poor Peoples Campaign: A National Call for Moral Revival. The mass assembly and teach-in was hosted on September 14, 2020, just weeks away from what many describe as the most important election in U.S. history. The first Poor Peoples Campaign was initially called by the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in 1968. It has now been revived by the Poor Peoples Campaign joint coordinators Bishop Dr. William Barber II and the Rev. Dr. Liz Theoharis. The PPC fusion approach is centered around the themes of racism, poverty, the war economy, ecological devastation and the nations distorted moral narrative. Participants in this event, Voting is Power Unleashed, include the PPC Coordinating Committees (now in 43 states) and other civic, religious and social justice organizations. Also, cultural activist Jane Fonda, Mark Ruffalo, D.L. Hughley, Erika Alexander, and Charlemagne tha God. Presidential candidates from both major parties were invited. However, only Joe Biden responded, so he will be participating to directly address the agenda and priorities of poor and low-income people. The event also features Forward Justice, the NAACP legal defense fund, and is part of the M.O.R.E. Campaign, which stands for Mobilizing, Organizing, Registering and Educating people for a movement that votes.

The Mississippi Center for Justice files suit against the Secretary of State's office over the issue of absentee voting ahead of the November General Election. Then, a movement to unite communities of poverty across the country turns it's efforts to key Senate races in the South.Plus, the coronavirus pandemic is changing how the 2020 Mississippi Book Festival looks. We talk to the festival's Literary Director about how book-lovers can access this year's content.Segment 1:A new lawsuit seeks to ensure Mississippians who are concerned about voting in-person because of the coronavirus pandemic can do so by absentee ballot in November. The Mississippi Center for Justice and the American Civil Liberties Union argue in the suit that the state's absentee ballot law is confusing - citing language added by the legislature during the pandemic. They're asking a judge to clarify that all voters who follow public health guidance to avoid contracting COVID-19 may vote by absentee ballot in the fall elections. Rob McDuff is a lawyer with the Mississippi Center for Justice. He shares more about the lawsuit with our Ashley Norwood.Segment 2:A campaign inspired by the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.'s last organizing effort says new data suggest low-income voters in key states could swing some U.S. Senate races - including the 2020 contest between Republican incumbent Cindy Hyde-Smith and challenger Mike Espy. The Poor People's Campaign, a coalition of activists and union and religious leaders, says it's using the data from a study by the Columbia School of Social Work to pressure candidates to focus on the systemic issue of poverty in places like the South. The Reverend Dr. William Barber II is a co-founder of the Poor People's CampaignSegment 3:Since 2015, the Mississippi Book Festival, a nonprofit founded by literacy advocates, has drawn thousands to the State Capitol grounds. But this year, things will be different for the sixth edition of the "literary lawn party". Due to the coronavirus pandemic, this year's festival will be all-virtual, with a wide variety of digital content today launching today. Ellen Rogers Daniels is the festival's Literary Director. She tells us how book-lovers can access this year's content. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Rev. Dr. William J. Barber II is the President & Senior Lecturer of Repairers of the Breach and Co-Chair of the Poor People's Campaign: A National Call For Moral Revival. Rev. Dr. Barber is also the architect of the Forward Together Moral Movement He is the author of several books including We Are Called to Be a Movement; Revive Us Again: Vision and Action in Moral Organizing; The Third Reconstruction: How a Moral Movement Is Overcoming the Politics of Division and Fear; and Forward Together: A Moral Message for the Nation. Rev. Barber is helping to convene and is a featured speaker at The Mass Poor People's Assembly and Moral March on Washington which is being held this upcoming Saturday, June 20. Rev. Barber reflects on America's culture of death and its connections to the police murder of George Floyd. Rev. Barber also explains how Donald Trump is a symptom of a much deeper moral crisis in America that is a function of racism, militarism, greed, right-wing religious nationalism, and social inequality and injustice more broadly. And Rev. Barber offers wisdom and advice about sustaining the long struggle and people's uprising that was sparked by the police murder of George Floyd and how we can move from outrage to substantive policy reform and societal progress. Chauncey DeVega ponders the wave of white supremacist mob violence across the United States in (mostly) rural America targeting the Black Lives Matter movement and anti-fascists. Chauncey is also concerned about the dangers of white guilt in this moment of people's uprising and mobilization sparked by the police murder of George Floyd and other examples of police thuggery and brutality against black people. And Chauncey DeVega also offers a remembrance for New Haven, Connecticut's and the Yale School of Drama's “Shakespeare Lady” who recently died at age 68 from the coronavirus pandemic.
