Edward Gero joins the CONVERSATION during a break in rehearsals for The Lehman Trilogy at the Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Gero's performance is another highlight in a distinguished, award-winning career spanning forty-seven years with upwards to one hundred fifty roles and counting including The Originalist at Court Theatre in Chicago, Angels in America at Arena Stage and earlier this year, in the critically-acclaimed production of The Lehman Trilogy at the Shakespeare Theatre Company that has now transferred to the Guthrie and opens September 19, 2024. Stefano Massini's epic multi-generational story, adapted by Ben Power and directed by Arin Arbus, chronicles the true-to-life rise of three Jewish immigrant brothers who built their own version of the American Dream from a small fabric business in 1844 to the international financial firm whose spectacular collapse in 2008 sent global markets spiraling out of control. Helen Benedict is the author of eight novels, including “Wolf Season” and “Sand Queen,” and five books of non-fiction.Her previous book, “Map of Hope and Sorrow,” co-written by Eyad Awwadawnon, is partly an oral history of refugees coming to Greece after escaping from their home countries. Helen Benedict s a Professor at the Columbia University School of Journalism. “The Good Deed” is a novel based on her research, which was later turned into the non-fiction book. In the interview, she discusses the origins of her book, the research on which the novel was based, and other elements of life among the refugees in Samos prior to the pandemic. Recorded May 4, 2024. Complete Interview.   Pride Month Special Interview: Joseph Hansen (1923-2004) was a pioneer of private eye fiction, whose main character, Dave Brandstetter, an insurance investigator, was the first gay protagonist in the detective field published by a mainstream house. The first Brandstetter novel, Fadeout, was published in 1970. At the time of publication, being gay was illegal in 49 of the 50 states. Richard Wolinsky and Richard A. Lupoff had a chance to interview Joseph Hansen on June 14th, 1990 following the publication of the eleventh novel, The Boy Who Was Buried This Morning. It turned into a career retrospective. There were twelve Brandstetter novels in all, culminating in 1991's A Country of Old Men. Successful at the time, they'd fallen out of print since Hansen's death, and have now been reissued by Syndicate Books and distributed by Soho Press. Priot to  the Brandstetter books, Joseph Hansen published gay-centric novels in various small presses under a pseudonym. Two gothic novels under the pseudonym Rose Brock. There were also autobiographical novels and short story collections among his output. Despite the acclaim his books received, none of Joseph Hansen's work has ever been adapted for film or television. He is the author of 11 novels including The Master, Brooklyn, The Testament of Mary, Nora Webster, House of Names and The Magician. Links to assorted local theater & book venues    Maureen Gosling, filmmaker and film editor, discusses the films of noted documentary director Les Blank (1935-2013), which whom she collaborated for several years, along with her own career, in this interview with host Richard Wolinsky.  A Retrospective of the films of Les Blank can be seen at Pacific Film Archive June 7 to July 27, 2024. Les Blank is best known for “Burden of Dreams,” an award winning documentary detailing the efforts of German director Werner Herzog in making his film “Fitzcarraldo” in the Peruvian jungle. Les Blank's work, though, focuses on the music and culture of the New Orleans and Louisiana, and the American South, with forays into the lives of several musicians, including rock legend Leon Russell. Maureen Gosling worked as a sound recordist and editor (and co-filmmaker) on several of Les Blank's films. Among her own films are There Ain't No Mouse Music: The Story of Chris Strachwitz and Arhoolie Records and The Nine Lives of Barbara Dane. This segment of the interview has never aired. Paul Auster, who died on April 30th, 2024 was a world-renowned novelist, memoirist, and film-maker whose works were translated into forty languages. His career as a writer began with a well-received memoir, The invention of Solitude in 1982, and took off in 1987 with the publication of three connected novellas titled The New York Trilogy. His fame and success grew over the following years. He moved into film-making with the screenplays for two movies directed by Wayne Wang, Smoke and Blue in the Face, and then wrote and directed his own film, Lulu on the Bridge. Links to assorted local theater & book venues    Aya de Leon, the Interim Program Director of the Tenth Annual Bay Area Book Festival, June 1-2 in various locations in Berkeley, talks about this year's festival with host Richard Wolinsky. Aya de Leon is the Poet Laureate of the City of Berkeley. She is a novelist and poet who currently teaches creative writing at U.C. Berkeley. She is the author of ten books, the most recent of which are the adult novel, “That Dangerous Energy,” and the young adult novel, “Untraceable.” Originally a hip hop artist, Aya de Leon is also a noted local activist, and the acquiring editor of Fighting Chance Books, the climate justice fiction imprint of She Writes Press. She organizes with the Black Hive, the climate and environmental justice formation of the Movement for Black Lives. Complete Interview.     Paul Auster (1947-2024), in conversation with host Richard Wolinsky, recorded October 2, 2002 while on tour for his novel “The Book of Illusions.” Paul Auster, who died on April 30th, 2024 was a world-renowned novelist, memoirist, and film-maker whose works were translated into forty languages. His career as a writer began with a well-received memoir, The invention of Solitude in 1982, and took off in 1987 with the publication of three connected novellas titled The New York Trilogy. His fame and success grew over the following years. He moved into film-making with the screenplays for two movies directed by Wayne Wang, Smoke and Blue in the Face, and then wrote and directed his own film, Lulu on the Bridge. There are three Paul Auster interviews in the archives. In this first interview, he discusses his film work, goes into depth about both The Book of Illusions and his previous novel, Timbuktu, much of the interview centersd on Lulu on the Bridge and the two Wayne Wang collaborations. The second interview was conducted in  2008 for Man in the Dark, and finally in 2017 for his masterpiece, 4 3 2 1. Since leaving RADA in 2016, Jamael Westman has led productions at the Royal Court, Shakespeare's Globe and of course took on the title role of Alexander Hamilton in Lin-Manuel Miranda's blockbuster musical in the West End's premiere cast. Now, he is starring in the National Theatre's production of London Tide, an adaptation of Charles Dickens' Our Mutual Friend by Ben Power with songs by PJ Harvey. The show is currently playing in the Lyttleton Theatre and is directed by Ian Rickson. In the show, Jamael plays Eugene Wrayburn, a character that he particular admires and feels proud to be playing alongside a delightful cast of actors that includes Peter Wight, Tom Mothersdale and Bella Maclean.In this brand new interview, Jamael Westman speaks passionately about the importance of love and empathy in a world that feels increasingly apathetic. After starring in politically themed works like Hamilton and Patriots, he tells us about how he sees being an actor as a political act too and he encourages those around him to be more empathetic and show love to others. We hear him reflect on the parallels between Dickens' London and modern London where the gap between the rich and poor continues to widen. Still, he remains positive about the world we live and shares his hope that people will come away from his latest show wanting to take action and decrease inequality. He also tells us about his desire for diversity and representation in theatre, to showcase a London which he loves and comes from in the hope more diverse talent will enter the industry as well. London, and the river that runs through it, is at the heart of the new play London Tide, an adaptation of Charles Dickens' Our Mutual Friend. Ben Power has adapted the novel and co-written original songs with the singer-songwriter PJ Harvey. He tells Adam Rutherford that although it combines the savage satire and social analysis of the original, it is, in essence, a love letter to the capital. Christmas is a time for cheer, and a time to eat, drink and be merry with family. For a lot of folk, some of these things may not be possible this year, which is why we felt even more duty bound to continue our very own festive tradition of getting really bloody silly at the end of the year. For the first since March, we decided to get in a room together and stare in lovingly into each other’s eyes to record this mega three parter. In the weeks leading up to this, we asked people to submit questions, ridiculous or otherwise, to us so we could turn this self serving nonsense into something for you lot. The results were…really messy. We also asked some of our previous guests to contribute too, so you’ll get to hear from co-hosts Anna Goldthorp and Vicki Henry, as well as from Ben Power of Blanck Mass, Jonah Matranga and of course, the most knowledgeable musical mind we know, Ferrucio Quercetti. In part one we answer a handful of these questions and have some of these co-hosts chip in. We start to get drunk and honestly, it’s a real fun time. When in Australia recently, I found a DVD about her which is part documentary, part music and which is excellent in my opinion. I've procured both albums so far and in the electronics field – they are top notch. This track's from his first album 4. Danger Mouse & Sparklehorse I rather liked Mark Linkous (Sparklehorse) and have all of his albums. He took his own life in March 2010. Danger Mouse has gone from strength to strength winning accolades and awards. 5. Casiotone for the painfully alone: is American, Owen Ashworth. He retired the name & songs in 2010 and now performs under the Monika ‘Advance base'. 6. Death in June: are a neofolk group led by English folky Douglas P(earce). They have been around since the beginning of the 80's and through various members have greatly influenced the more Avant garde /Industrial/rock (Nurse with wound; Throbbing Gristle; Current 93…) but with their various phases of performance art, left a nasty taste with, seemingly, their enthrall with a sanitised Nazism back in the 80's. 7. Leyland Kirby again with his evocation of times past using piano, other keyboards a single voice. He recently turned 40 and produced for download an album which has since disappeared. To everyone who purchased & downloaded that album however, he sent a personalised thank you email. How things have changed. 8. Death of the Neighbourhood is simply another one of Stephen Jones's many guises – know now as exBabybird, he also releases work under the Monika's of Black Reindeer; The Great Sadness; Deluder; Trucker as well as under his own name (and all to be found in my record collection) 9. CocoRosie I came to CoCo through Anthony (Hegarty, of ‘& the Johnsons' fame). Weird but wonderful with a confusing a website (probably down to Touch & go records) however, if you are prepared to wait for the download you will be rewarded with the girls singing. I'd stop there if I were you rather than clicking on! 10. Blank Mass: is Ben Power, one the founding members of F*Buttons, now out there on his own but doing rather well. He supported Icelandic band Sigur Ros UK tour last year (2013) 11. Matt Elliott Another of my favourite artists. Like Ben Power, another Bristolian. The music papers tend to bag him as ‘dark folk'. His early albums had a sound of the Eastern Europe and his latest a more Spanish Flamenco feel. This track is from his more Eastern Europe period and as most of his songs are over 8 minutes – this is one chosen for brevity rather than content. I still like it though. 12. Dirty Pretty Things: For Carl Barat, this is what happened after the Libertines fell apart following his dispute with Peter Doherty. It lasted from that time; 2005 until itself fell apart in 2008. 13. Balam Acab I think this track gives a wonderful atmosphere, sounding a little like Moby, except for the other-worldly vocals. Now overdue for another album I think. 14. Capt. Beefheart The Captain was and still is different. Not for the feint hearted, Beefheart was different with a capitol D. He is part of what is now termed ‘outsider music'. I loved Strictly Personal his second commercial LP in UK (after Safe as milk – also very good, so why did I sell it?) and before the famous Troutmask Replica. Troutmask was too over the top for many and compared with his first two albums – it is. However, Strictly P points the way with such great numbers as Gimme dat harp boy. That track, available on a compilation album, Gutbucket gave me my first glimpse of Beefheart-world and I had to go there, own the album, sing the tunes…. I regret selling his later works (Lick my decals off & Clear Spot). The ‘Mirror man' sessions have been re-released and ‘Electricity' from Safe as Milk always makes me think about watching the first pylons being constructed in the West Midlands to carry the demand for electricity following the baby boom. It was interesting watching the steeplejacks construct these things, but when they had moved down the line one was left with a scar on the land which forever changed Britain. I'm always reminded of this when I visit Tuscany. Hardly a pylon in sight and yet in England, no beautiful scenic part of the island can be seen without these lumps of metal, stretching out across the landscape. I saw the Captain in concert and festival several times, back in the day. He's gone now. 15. Amon Tobin is a Brazilian musician, composer and producer of electronic music. He is described as a virtuoso sound designer and is considered to be one of the most influential electronic music artists in the world. I bought a box set of retro stuff which includes a dvd to his concert for his work Isam – unbelievable at the time and I haven't seen anything like it since. 16. FKA Twigs Formally Known As Twigs because, like Dirty Pretty Things of a few tracks ago – someone else disputed use of the name as they had been using it for longer – so unlike DPT who worked live under the name ‘Bright Young Things' - Twigs opted for the ‘Prince' like, FKA. 17. Jocelyn Pook Ensemble The Unknown Public box sets are rather splendid in providing an introduction to the wonderful world of weird. This track is one of the more straight-forward on this set (Vol 15). 18. Vessel Yet another Bristolian, Seb Gainsborough. I lived in Bristol for a year. Always thought I'd return one day – but doubtful now. Bristol seems to have moved from the home of Trip-hop and Bass to Electronica! Using techno and house as a jumping off point Vessel manages to twist these things into something unconventional and alien, often creating music that sounds as if it's rhythmically out of control when in fact it's all tightly controlled chaos.
