Run: Week 5 Run for the Long Haul Hebrews 12:12-17 Therefore lift your drooping hands and strengthen your weak knees, and make straight paths for your feet, so that what is lame may not be put out of joint but rather be healed. Strive for peace with everyone, and for the holiness without which no one will see the Lord. See to it that no one fails to obtain the grace of God; that no “root of bitterness” springs up and causes trouble, and by it many become defiled; that no one is sexually immoral or unholy like Esau, who sold his birthright for a single meal. For you know that afterward, when he desired to inherit the blessing, he was rejected, for he found no chance to repent, though he sought it with tears. - Hebrews 12:12-17 3 Keys to Staying Strong for the Long Haul: 1. Fight for peace in a God-honoring way -- When a fight is necessary – use minimum necessary force. 2. Don't let resentment, unforgiveness, and bitterness build 3. Don't fall for quick fixes that promise immediate relief. He sold his rights for a quick fix. Yeah, yeah whatever, just give me what I want right now.

He had killed two lion-like heroes of Moab. He also had chased down and killed a lion in the midst of a pit on a snowy day. 23 And he killed an Egyptian, a man of great height, five cubits tall. In the Egyptian's hand there was a spear like a weaver's beam; and he ran down to him with a staff, wrestled the spear out of the Egyptian's hand, and killed him with his own spear …And David appointed him over his guard. RAHABS BACK STORY: 1. Joshua 2. Jericho 3. Rahab Joshua 2:9-14 (MSG) I know that GOD has given you the land. We're all afraid. Everyone in the country feels hopeless. 10 We heard how GOD dried up the waters of the Red Sea before you when you left Egypt, …. 11 We heard it and our hearts sank. We all had the wind knocked out of us. And all because of you, you and GOD, your God, God of the heavens above and God of the earth below. 12 “Now promise me by GOD. I showed you mercy; now show my family mercy. And give me some tangible proof, a guarantee 13 of life for my father and mother, my brothers and sisters—everyone connected with my family. Save our souls from death!” 14 “Our lives for yours!” Said the men. “But don't tell anyone our business. When GOD turns this land over to us, we'll do right by you in loyal mercy.” Joshua 2:18 here is what you must do: Hang this red rope out the window through which you let us down and gather your entire family with you in your house—father, mother, brothers, and sisters…19 Anyone who goes out the doors of your house into the street and is killed, it's his own fault—we aren't responsible. 20 But if you tell anyone of our business here, the oath you made us swear is canceled—we're no longer responsible.” 21 She said, “If that's what you say, that's the way it is,” and sent them off. They left and she hung the red rope out the window. Joshua 6:15-17 (MSG) 15 When the seventh day came, they got up early and marched around the city this same way but seven times—yes, this day they circled the city seven times. 16 On the seventh time around the priests blew the trumpets and Joshua signaled the people, “Shout!—GOD has given you the city! 17 The city and everything in it is under a holy curse and offered up to GOD. “Except for Rahab the harlot—she is to live, she and everyone in her house with her, because she hid the agents we sent. I AM NOT DEFINED BY MY PAST! 1. GOD SAVES THOSE WITH A PAST 2. GOD USES THOSE WITH A PAST 3. GOD REDEFINES THOSE WITH A PAST God redefined Rahab — From a fallen woman to a CHOSEN woman, from a bad girl to a BRIDE, from a mess to a MOTHER and from prostitute to a PARENT of the Messiah. Run Week 2 – The Power of Discipline Hebrews 12:1-11 Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured from sinners such hostility against himself, so that you may not grow weary or fainthearted. In your struggle against sin, you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding your blood. And have you completely forgotten this word of encouragement that addresses you as a father addresses his son? It says, “My son, do not make light of the Lord's discipline, and do not lose heart when he rebukes you, because the Lord disciplines the one he loves, and he chastens everyone he accepts as his son.” Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as his children. For what children are not disciplined by their father? If you are not disciplined—and everyone undergoes discipline—then you are not legitimate, not true sons and daughters at all…No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it. “Discipline is the basic set of tools we require to solve life's problems.” - M. Scott Peck Key Point: The foundation of all discipline is delayed gratification.

Christmas Unmasked When It's Nothing Like You Expected Matthew 2:1-12 After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi from the east came to Jerusalem and asked, “Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.” When King Herod heard this he was disturbed, and all Jerusalem with him. When he had called together all the people's chief priests and teachers of the law, he asked them where the Messiah was to be born. “In Bethlehem in Judea,” they replied, “for this is what the prophet has written: “‘But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for out of you will come a ruler who will shepherd my people Israel.'[b]” Then Herod called the Magi secretly and found out from them the exact time the star had appeared. He sent them to Bethlehem and said, “Go and search carefully for the child. As soon as you find him, report to me, so that I too may go and worship him.” After they had heard the king, they went on their way, and the star they had seen when it rose went ahead of them until it stopped over the place where the child was. When they saw the star, they were overjoyed. On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. And having been warned in a dream not to go back to Herod, they returned to their country by another route. Key Point: When you are faced with a situation that is nothing like you expected choose to bring your best and give it. The Gifts of the Magi and what they may represent: 1. Gold for a king (Jesus as king) 2. Frankincense for a high priest (Jesus us intercessor between God and man) 3. Myrrh for sacrifice (Jesus as the sacrifice that would save the world) Key Point: We focus on the presents, but what if it's about the presence. The Challenge: Create an intentional time for total presence with those around you. Possible ideas for creating presence: Turn off the TV Turn off phones (don't look stuff up) Pull out some old photos Play a board game Ask some pre-planned questions to get conversation going

Christmas Unmasked: Week 1 - Nothing is What it Seems to Be Story: Going to Australia and all the plans getting blown to pieces. Then findind I've sat through many, many boring sermons. This may be the most impractical message I've ever given. Or it may be the most practical. If this stuff doesn't work in the real world why are we doing it? And honestly I think a lot of preachers don't know how this stuff works in the real world, which is why their sermons are boring as hell. When the infinite enters the finite, it becomes impossible to see everything that is happening. Which is why you have to have faith. Whenever you see heaven touching earth, heaven has to hide itself -- Open eyes if heart to see the unseen – in my kids, in my spouse, in my world Question: What the heck is happening here? Where are you God? Key Point: The kingdom of God must always be sought. Seek first the kingdom…. You have to seek it because his work is always veiled. It is the glory of God to conceal things, but the glory of kings is to search things out. – Proverbs 25:2 And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him. – Hebrews 11:6 Modern man does not see God because he will not look low enough. – Carl Jung God is always at work, but to see his work we have to seek it out – what we see rarely displays what he's actually doing. …. for we walk by faith, not by sight. 2 Corinthians 5:7 Key Point: If you want to see what God is up to, you can't look at what you see. Nowhere was this exemplified like it was in the life of God in the flesh…. There were even warnings (800 years earlier, 740BC) to look for him in the lowly, desperate places. Like one from whom people hide their faces he was despised, and we held him in low esteem. – Isaiah 53:3 Veiled in flesh the Godhead see; Hail the incarnate Deity, Pleased with us in flesh to dwell, Jesus our Emmanuel. Now we see things imperfectly, like puzzling reflections in a mirror, but then we will see everything with perfect clarity. All that I know now is partial and incomplete, but then I will know everything completely, just as God now knows me completely. -1 Cor. 13:12, NLT Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal. -2 Corinthians 4:16-18, NIV

The Lost Art of Gratitude Week 3: The Cure for Comparison Comparison is the thief of joy. – C.S. Lewis Mimetic Desire: The idea that imitation is the force that shapes human desire. People desire things because someone else—a model—did first. Key Point: It's our similarity that causes division, jealousy, and envy -- not our differences. What causes fights and quarrels among you? Don't they come from your desires that battle within you? You desire but do not have, so you kill. You covet but you cannot get what you want, so you quarrel and fight. You do not have because you do not ask God. – James 4:1-2 What we all want: security, connection, and control. You shall not covet your neighbor's house; you shall not covet your neighbor's wife, or his male servant, or his female servant, or his ox, or his donkey, or anything that is your neighbor's.” – Exodus 20:17 Scapegoat: The person/group a society decides to blame for not being able to get what they want. Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children. And walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God. - Ephesians 5:1

A Different Spirit: Week 5 - Glorious Humility Key Point: Humility is having an accurate perspective on reality Joshua 14:6-12 And Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite said to him, “You know what the Lord said to Moses the man of God in Kadesh-barnea concerning you and me. I was forty years old when Moses the servant of the Lord sent me from Kadesh-barnea to spy out the land, and I brought him word again as it was in my heart. But my brothers who went up with me made the heart of the people melt; yet I wholly followed the Lord my God…. And now, behold, the Lord has kept me alive, just as he said, these forty-five years since the time that the Lord spoke this word to Moses, while Israel walked in the wilderness. And now, behold, I am this day eighty-five years old. I am still as strong today as I was in the day that Moses sent me; my strength now is as my strength was then, for war and for going and coming. So now give me this hill country of which the Lord spoke on that day, for you heard on that day how the Anakim were there, with great fortified cities. It may be that the Lord will be with me, and I shall drive them out just as the Lord said.” Numbers 14:6-10 And Joshua the son of Nun and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, who were among those who had spied out the land, tore their clothes and said to all the congregation of the people of Israel, “The land, which we passed through to spy it out, is an exceedingly good land. If the Lord delights in us, he will bring us into this land and give it to us, a land that flows with milk and honey. Only do not rebel against the Lord. And do not fear the people of the land, for they are bread for us. Their protection is removed from them, and the Lord is with us; do not fear them.” Then all the congregation said to stone them with stones. But the glory of the Lord appeared at the tent of meeting to all the people of Israel. Translation: “If the LORD delights in us” = I don't know, but I'll be courageous and trust him. James 4:10 “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” Submit yourselves therefore to God… Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will exalt you. 1 Peter 5:6-7 Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you. Key Point: Glory is the result humility. Actions Steps: Bored? 1. Take on a project that is way bigger than anything you can do on your own. 2. Learn something new that makes you feel dumb and foolish Overhwhelmed? 1. Lighten up… You aren't that important. 2. Stop trying to control all outcomes. Let God be God.

Different Spirit Week 4: I Love Fear (aka Life is Too Short to Die a Coward) Numbers 13:25-30 At the end of forty days they returned from spying out the land…. They brought back word to them and to all the congregation, and showed them the fruit of the land. And they told him, “We came to the land to which you sent us. It flows with milk and honey, and this is its fruit. However, the people who dwell in the land are strong, and the cities are fortified and very large. And besides, we saw the descendants of Anak there. The Amalekites dwell in the land of the Negeb. The Hittites, the Jebusites, and the Amorites dwell in the hill country. And the Canaanites dwell by the sea, and along the Jordan.” But Caleb quieted the people before Moses and said, “Let us go up at once and occupy it, for we are well able to overcome it.” Numbers 14:11-12 And the Lord said to Moses, “How long will this people despise me? And how long will they not believe in me, in spite of all the signs that I have done among them? I will strike them with the pestilence and disinherit them, and I will make of you a nation greater and mightier than they.” Numbers 14:14-24 Then the Lord said, “I have pardoned, according to your word. But truly, as I live, and as all the earth shall be filled with the glory of the Lord, none of the men who have seen my glory and my signs that I did in Egypt and in the wilderness, and yet have put me to the test these ten times and have not obeyed my voice, shall see the land that I swore to give to their fathers. And none of those who despised me shall see it. But my servant Caleb, because he has a different spirit and has followed me fully, I will bring into the land into which he went, and his descendants shall possess it. Key Point: Fear doesn't go away. It must be faced in small doses. Then it loses its power. You must learn to do it afraid. 1 John 4:16-18 God is love, and whoever abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him. By this is love perfected with us, so that we may have confidence for the day of judgment, because as he is so also are we in this world. There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. 1 Corinthians 3:13 …each one's work will become manifest, for the Day will disclose it, because it will be revealed by fire, and the fire will test what sort of work each one has done. If the work that anyone has built on the foundation survives, he will receive a reward. If anyone's work is burned up, he will suffer loss, though he himself will be saved, but only as through fire. Proverbs 9:10 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is insight.

And where are all His miracles which our fathers told us about, saying, ‘Did not the LORD bring us up from Egypt?' But now the LORD has forsaken us and delivered us into the hands of the Midianites.” 14 Then the LORD turned to him and said, “Go in this might of yours, and you shall save Israel from the hand of the Midianites. Have I not sent you?” 15 So he said to Him, “O my Lord, how can I save Israel? Indeed my clan is the weakest in Manasseh, and I am the least in my father's house.” 16 And the LORD said to him, “Surely I will be with you, and you shall defeat the Midianites as one man.” 17 Then he said to Him, “If now I have found favor in Your sight, then show me a sign that it is You who talk with me. 18 Do not depart from here, I pray, until I come to You and bring out my offering and set it before You.” And He said, “I will wait until you come back.

For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will save it. When Christ calls a man, he bids him come and die… But we do not want to die, and therefore Jesus Christ and his call are necessarily our death as well as our life. The call to discipleship, the baptism in the name of Jesus Christ means both death and life. - Dietrich Bonhoeffer Key Point: If every act of surrender to God feels a little like something is dying inside of you – you are doing it right. Galatians 2:20 I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. 2 Corinthians 4:7-10 But we have this treasure in jars of clay, to show that the surpassing power belongs to God and not to us. We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed; always carrying in the body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be manifested in our bodies. Key Point: Surrendering your identity to Christ is the ultimate victory.

Free Your Father Week 5 – Pass on the Blessing Genesis 48:1-18 After this, Joseph was told, “Behold, your father is ill.” So he took with him his two sons, Manasseh and Ephraim. And it was told to Jacob, “Your son Joseph has come to you.” Then Israel summoned his strength and sat up in bed. And Jacob said to Joseph, “God Almighty appeared to me at Luz in the land of Canaan and blessed me, and said to me, ‘Behold, I will make you fruitful and multiply you, and I will make of you a company of peoples and will give this land to your offspring after you for an everlasting possession.' And now your two sons, who were born to you in the land of Egypt before I came to you in Egypt, are mine; Ephraim and Manasseh shall be mine, as Reuben and Simeon are. And the children that you fathered after them shall be yours. They shall be called by the name of their brothers in their inheritance. Key Point: Blessing in the future always requires sacrifice in the present. Application: Every generation is called to make a sacrifice for the blessing of those coming after them. Then Joseph removed them from his knees, and he bowed himself with his face to the earth… And Israel stretched out his right hand and laid it on the head of Ephraim, who was the younger, and his left hand on the head of Manasseh, crossing his hands (for Manasseh was the firstborn)…. When Joseph saw that his father laid his right hand on the head of Ephraim, it displeased him, and he took his father's hand to move it from Ephraim's head to Manasseh's head. And Joseph said to his father, “Not this way, my father; since this one is the firstborn, put your right hand on his head.” But his father refused and said, “I know, my son, I know. He also shall become a people, and he also shall be great. Nevertheless, his younger brother shall be greater than he, and his offspring shall become a multitude of nations.” Key Point: You don't get to decide what God's blessing looks like in those who come after you. Application: The blessing will look different than what you idealized. You must recognize the difference and nurture the blessing in your children as part of your inheritance.

Free Your Father Week 4: Reflect Your Father Key Point: We are reflectors of what we are looking at/for. Hebrews 11:1-3, 7-12 Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart. Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as his children. For what children are not disciplined by their father? If you are not disciplined—and everyone undergoes discipline—then you are not legitimate, not true sons and daughters at all. Moreover, we have all had human fathers who disciplined us and we respected them for it. How much more should we submit to the Father of spirits and live! They disciplined us for a little while as they thought best; but God disciplines us for our good, in order that we may share in his holiness. No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it. Therefore, strengthen your feeble arms and weak knees. “Make level paths for your feet,” so that the lame may not be disabled, but rather healed. John 5:19-20 Jesus gave them this answer: “Very truly I tell you, the Son can do nothing by himself; he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does. For the Father loves the Son and shows him all he does. Yes, and he will show him even greater works than these, so that you will be amazed.

Now the LORD said to Abram, “Go from your country and your kindred and your father's house to the land that I will show you. And I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and him who dishonors you I will curse, and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.” So Abram went, as the LORD had told him, and Lot went with him. Abram was seventy-five years old when he departed from Haran. 1. Our parent's decisions can set us back from where we could have been. Alcoholism, gambling, etc. can keep families in financial poverty for generations. And they settle there because they don't know any difference. Or the pain is too great. Ephesians 2:10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them. Key Point: Abraham should have grown up in Canaan, but he had to be the one to get his family there. When he did what his father could not do, he got the credit for his faith in action. Often, God will call on us to carry on the good works our father did. Psalm 78:1-4 Give ear, O my people, to my teaching; incline your ears to the words of my mouth! I will open my mouth in a parable; I will utter dark sayings from of old, things that we have heard and known, that our fathers have told us. We will not hide them from their children, but tell to the coming generation the glorious deeds of the Lord, and his might, and the wonders that he has done.

But Shem and Japheth took a garment and laid it across their shoulders; then they walked in backward and covered their father's naked body. Their faces were turned the other way so that they would not see their father naked. When Noah awoke from his wine and found out what his youngest son had done to him, he said, “Cursed be Canaan! The lowest of slaves will he be to his brothers.” Exodus 20:15 “Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is giving you. Key Point: Honor = Respect Colossians 3:13 Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. - Matthew 6:14-15 For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins. Hebrews 11:39-12:3 These were all commended for their faith, yet none of them received what had been promised, since God had planned something better for us so that only together with us would they be made perfect. Free Your Father Week 1: Daddy Issues Romans 3:23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God… Romans 5:12,17-19 Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned— for sin indeed was in the world before the law was given, but sin is not counted where there is no law. Yet death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over those whose sinning was not like the transgression of Adam, who was a type of the one who was to come… For if, because of one man's trespass, death reigned through that one man, much more will those who receive the abundance of grace and the free gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man Jesus Christ. Therefore, as one trespass led to condemnation for all men, so one act of righteousness leads to justification and life for all men. For as by the one man's disobedience the many were made sinners, so by the one man's obedience the many will be made righteous. 2 Corinthians 5:17-20 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come. All this is from God, who through Christ reconciled us to himself and gave us the ministry of reconciliation; that is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation. Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us. We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. Hebrews 11:39 These were all commended for their faith, yet none of them received what had been promised, since God had planned something better for us so that only together with us would they be made perfect. And the chains had been pulled apart by him, and the shackles broken in pieces; neither could anyone tame him. 5 And always, night and day, he was in the mountains and in the tombs, crying out and cutting himself with stones. 6 When he saw Jesus from afar, he ran and worshiped Him. 7 And he cried out with a loud voice and said, “What have I to do with You, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I implore You by God that You do not torment me.” 8 For He said to him, “Come out of the man, unclean spirit!” 9 Then He asked him, “What is your name?” And he answered, saying, “My name is Legion; for we are many.” 10 Also he begged Him earnestly that He would not send them out of the country. 11 Now a large herd of swine was feeding there near the mountains. 12 So all the demons begged Him, saying, “Send us to the swine, that we may enter them.” 13 And at once Jesus gave them permission. Then the unclean spirits went out and entered the swine (there were about two thousand); and the herd ran violently down the steep place into the sea and drowned in the sea. 14 So those who fed the swine fled, and they told it in the city and in the country. And they went out to see what it was that had happened. 15 Then they came to Jesus, and saw the one who had been demon-possessed and had the legion, sitting and clothed and in his right mind. And they were afraid. 16 And those who saw it told them how it happened to him who had been demon-possessed, and about the swine. 17 Then they began to plead with Him to depart from their region. 18 And when He got into the boat, he who had been demon-possessed begged Him that he might be with Him. 19 However, Jesus did not permit him, but said to him, “Go home to your friends, and tell them what great things the Lord has done for you, and how He has had compassion on you.” 20 And he departed and began to proclaim in Decapolis all that Jesus had done for him; and all marveled TAKE IT HOME: Fill in the blank: 1. Just Remember Mark 9:14-29, NIV When they came to the other disciples, they saw a large crowd around them and the teachers of the law arguing with them. 15As soon as all the people saw Jesus, they were overwhelmed with wonder and ran to greet him. “What are you arguing with them about?” he asked. A man in the crowd answered, “Teacher, I brought you my son, who is possessed by a spirit that has robbed him of speech. Whenever it seizes him, it throws him to the ground. He foams at the mouth, gnashes his teeth and becomes rigid. I asked your disciples to drive out the spirit, but they could not.” “You unbelieving generation,” Jesus replied, “how long shall I stay with you? How long shall I put up with you? Bring the boy to me.” So they brought him. When the spirit saw Jesus, it immediately threw the boy into a convulsion. He fell to the ground and rolled around, foaming at the mouth. Jesus asked the boy's father, “How long has he been like this?” “From childhood,” he answered. “It has often thrown him into fire or water to kill him. But if you can do anything, take pity on us and help us.” ‘If you can'?” said Jesus. “Everything is possible for one who believes.” Immediately the boy's father exclaimed, “I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief!” When Jesus saw that a crowd was running to the scene, he rebuked the impure spirit. “You deaf and mute spirit,” he said, “I command you, come out of him and never enter him again.” The spirit shrieked, convulsed him violently and came out. The boy looked so much like a corpse that many said, “He's dead.” But Jesus took him by the hand and lifted him to his feet, and he stood up. After Jesus had gone indoors, his disciples asked him privately, “Why couldn't we drive it out?” He replied, “This kind can come out only by prayer. ” Key Point: If you want faith for what's ahead, look backwards. All In Romans 7:15-23 For I do not understand my own actions. For I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate…For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh. For I have the desire to do what is right, but not the ability to carry it out. For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I keep on doing. Now if I do what I do not want, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells within me. So I find it to be a law that when I want to do right, evil lies close at hand. For I delight in the law of God, in my inner being, but I see in my members another law waging war against the law of my mind and making me captive to the law of sin that dwells in my members. Wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death? Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord! Hebrews 2:3-5 Such is the confidence that we have through Christ toward God. Not that we are sufficient in ourselves to claim anything as coming from us, but our sufficiency is from God, who has made us sufficient to be ministers of a new covenant, not of the letter but of the Spirit. For the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life. Luke 6:46-49 “Why do you call me ‘Lord, Lord,' and not do what I tell you? Everyone who comes to me and hears my words and does them, I will show you what he is like: he is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock. And when a flood arose, the stream broke against that house and could not shake it, because it had been well built. But the one who hears and does not do them is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. When the stream broke against it, immediately it fell, and the ruin of that house was great.” Galatians 2:20 I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. Just then, a religious scholar approached him and said, “Teacher, I’ll follow you wherever you go!” Jesus replied, “Foxes have dens, birds have nests, but the Son of Man has no true home in this world.” Then another man spoke up and said, “Lord, I’ll follow you, but first I must take care of my aged father and bury him when he dies.” But Jesus said to him, “Now is the time to follow me, and let those who are dead bury their own dead.” Now when He got into a boat, His disciples followed Him. And suddenly a great tempest arose on the sea, so that the boat was covered with the waves. But He was asleep. Then His disciples came to Him and awoke Him, saying, “Lord, save us! We are perishing!” But He said to them, “WAKE UP SLEEPER, “Why are you afraid, Have faith in God!” Then He arose and rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was a great calm. So the men marveled, saying, “Who can this be, that even the winds and the sea obey Him? Now when He got into a boat, His disciples followed Him. REMINDER #1: JESUS LEADS, DISCIPLES FOLLOW And suddenly a great tempest (a shaking; earthquake) arose on the sea, so that the boat was covered with the waves. REMINDER #2: FOLLOWING JESUS does not exempt us from OPPOSITION. IT MATTERS NOT HOW HARD THE WAVES HIT THE BOAT; WHAT MATTERS IS WHO’S IN THE BOAT WITH YOU. But He was asleep. Then His disciples came to Him and awoke Him, saying, “Lord, save us! We are perishing!” REMINDER #3: EVERY STORM HAS ITS OWN CHALLENGES (be led;) Jesus can Sleep because HE PUT HIS TRUST In The ONE WHO NEVER SLEEPS OR NEVER SLUMBERS… Psalms 121:1-4 1 I will lift up my eyes to the hills—Where does my help come from? My help comes from the LORD, Who made heaven and earth. He will not allow your foot to be moved; He who keeps you will not slumber. Behold, He who keeps Israel Shall neither slumber nor sleep. But He said to them, “WAKE UP SLEEPER, “Why are you afraid, Have faith in God!” Then He arose and rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was a great calm. REMINDER #4: Jesus is more concerned with BUILDING YOUR FAITH than DEMONSTRATING HIS POWER. Jesus – Lk 10:19 - …Behold, I have given you authority to tread on snakes and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy. Nothing will harm you. Nevertheless, do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.” (MSG) 1 Pet. 1:7 When Jesus wraps this all up, it's your faith, not your gold, that God will have on display as evidence of his victory. Jeremiah 9:23-24 23 Thus says the LORD: “Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, Let not the mighty man glory in his might, Nor let the rich man glory in his riches; 24 But let him who glories glory in this, That he understands and knows Me, That I am the LORD, exercising lovingkindness, judgment, and righteousness in the earth. For in these I delight,” says the LORD. So the men marveled, saying, “Who can this be, that even the winds and the sea obey Him? Reminder #5: Life is lived FORWARD but UNDERSTOOD looking backward JESUS IS PERSONAL Psalm 34:2-3 “Let all who are discouraged take heart. Come, let us talk about God’s goodness.” HEB 10:23 Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who promised is faithful. On a regular basis, we should go back over the major victories in our life. David - "If it had not been for the goodness of God, where would I be"? Psalm 129 says, "From my earliest youth my enemies have persecuted me but they have never been able to finish me off". “WAKE UP SLEEPER” HE STILL RAISES DEAD THINGS TO LIFE HE STILL RESUSCITATES DORMANT DREAMS HE’S STILL OUR TRUE REST HE’S STILL IS REMINDING US OF HIS FAITHFULNESS

We are going to drown!” 39 Jesus stood up and gave a command to the wind and the water. He said, “Quiet! Be still!” Then the wind stopped, and the lake became calm. 40 He said to his followers, “Why are you afraid? Do you still have no faith?” Jesus said to the crowds: “Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest.” ~ Mt 11:28 GOD RESTED: On the seventh day God completed the work he had been doing; he rested on the seventh day from all the work he had undertaken. God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it he rested from all the work he had done in creation” (Gn. 2:2-3). CONCEPT: many of us have made work a false deity. Idolization of Work - Why is sleep deprivation such an issue in our modern epoch? MARY MARTHA We don’t know how to be Marys, because we are so accustomed to being Marthas. “It is vain for you to rise early and put off your rest at night, to eat bread earned by hard toil— all this God gives to his beloved in sleep” (Ps. 127:2). Resting is an act of trust. Relaxing or taking a break means that we don’t have to control everything, because we are “worth more than many sparrows” (see Mt. 6:26) Resting reminds us to take time out of our hurried lives and slow down.

The Circle Perspective Week 4: The Growth Key Point: Healthy things grow. Philippians 2:3-13 Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others. In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus: Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death- even death on a cross. Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. Therefore, my dear friends, as you have always obeyed—not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence—continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose. Key Point: The way up is down. 1 Corinthians 8:1 Now about food sacrificed to idols: We know that “We all possess knowledge.” But knowledge puffs up while love builds up. Those who think they know something do not yet know as they ought to know. But whoever loves God is known by God. Romans 15:1-2 We who are strong have an obligation to bear with the failings of the weak, and not to please ourselves. Let each of us please his neighbor for his good, to build him up. Key Point: As we grow, we transcend and include.

The Circle Perspective Week 3 – The Adventure/Challenges Luke 9:57-62 As they were going along the road, someone said to him, “I will follow you wherever you go.” And Jesus said to him, “Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head.” To another he said, “Follow me.” But he said, “Lord, let me first go and bury my father.” And Jesus said to him, “Leave the dead to bury their own dead. But as for you, go and proclaim the kingdom of God.” Yet another said, “I will follow you, Lord, but let me first say farewell to those at my home.” Jesus said to him, “No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God. Key Point: You must commit to the path and the way will open to you. James 1:5-8 If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without r reproach, and it will be given him. But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind. For that person must not suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways. Ephesians 6:10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Key Point: Life doesn’t get easier. We must get stronger. John 6:67-69 After this many of his disciples turned back and no longer walked with him. So Jesus said to the twelve, “Do you want to go away as well?” Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life, and we have believed, and have come to know, that you are the Holy One of God.” Key Point: Every journey of faith involves Dark Nights of the Soul.

The Circle Perspective Week 2 – The Call 2 Corinthians 5:14-15 If we are “out of our mind,” as some say, it is for God; if we are in our right mind, it is for you. For Christ’s love compels us… 1 John 3:1-4 See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are. The reason why the world does not know us is that it did not know him. Beloved, we are God’s children now, and what we will be has not yet appeared; but we know that when he appears we shall be like him, because we shall see him as he is. And everyone who thus hopes in him purifies himself as he is pure. Key Point: You must accept where/who you are. But never sacrifice what you could be for who you are now. Fears That Hold Us Back: 1. Failure 2. Being unqualified 3. Timing 4. Looking foolish An adventure is only an inconvenience rightly considered. An inconvenience is only an adventure wrongly considered. – G.K. Chesterton John 16:12-13 I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear. But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. Key Point: The Holy Spirit is our guide in the unknown. Key Point: There is no formula. There is only revelation.

The Circle Perspective Part 1: To Destiny or Despair Psalm 23:3 The Lord is my shepherd…He guides me in paths of righteousness for the sake of His name. Key Point 1: Your pain can either lead you to your destiny (redemptive) or to despair (destructive). Romans 8:28-30 And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters. And those he predestined, he also called; those he called, he also justified; those he justified, he also glorified. The Call = Face your fear, step into the unknown in faith, and become all God says you are. Matthew 6:33 Seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. Key Point 2: Don’t ask WHY in the middle of pain. Ask: WHAT am I going to do about it? Meaning is only found looking backwards. Life can only be understood backward; but it must be lived forward. - Soren Kierkegaard Genesis 50:19-20 But Joseph said to them, “Don’t be afraid. Am I in the place of God? You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives. The wound is the place where the Light enters you. – Rumi

More Than Words Week 4 - Tact Proverbs 25:11-12 A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in a setting of silver. Like a gold ring or an ornament of gold is a wise reprover to a listening ear. Tact (noun) Acute sensitivity to what is proper and appropriate in dealing with others, including the ability to speak or act without offending. Raise your words, not voice. It is rain that grows flowers, not thunder. – Rumi Colossians 4:5-6 Be wise in the way you act toward outsiders; make the most of every opportunity. Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone. Matthew 16:12-13 “I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear. But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. More Than Words Week 3 - Timing Proverbs 24:11 Rescue those who are being taken away to death; hold back those who are stumbling to the slaughter. Matthew 7:6 Do not give dogs what is holy, and do not throw your pearls before pigs, lest they trample them underfoot and turn to attack you. Ecclesiastes 3:1-7 There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens: a time to be born and a time to die, a time to plant and a time to uproot… a time to tear and a time to mend, a time to be silent and a time to speak, Matthew 16:12-13 “I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear. But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. Matthew 7:5-6 Why do you see the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when there is the log in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother’s eye. Do not give dogs what is holy, and do not throw your pearls before pigs, lest they trample them underfoot and turn to attack you.

More Than Words Week 2 – The Right Tone The single biggest problem in communication is the illusion that it has taken place. - George Bernard Shaw Proverbs 18:21 Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruits. Key Point: Even the most loving message can’t be heard if it’s given in the wrong tone. 1 Corinthians 13:1 If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal… Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. 1 Kings 19:11-13 Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake came a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper. Ephesians 4:15 Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of him who is the head, that is, Christ.
