Living with narcolepsy and cataplexy, Michelle Weger (rhymes with eager) has turned her toughest experiences into fuel to power her success. Don't Snooze Your Dreams, her memoir and self-help guide, takes us on her journey-from managing a rare debilitating sleep disorder to launching a successful business and becoming an advocate for narcolepsy awareness. Michelle and Jacob get into what it means to be diagnosed, the real role writing a book played in Michelle's rehabilitation, and more about Michelle's ‘soul-dog' Maximus.
Capture Inspired Moments and Finally Finish Your Book Welcome back Michelle Weger with our second podcast in a row with her! In the previous episode, we celebrated the release of her new book, Don't Snooze Your Dreams: Lessons from Life with Narcolepsy. Now, we're going to talk about how Michelle was able to write her book so quickly and even managed to get it published ahead of schedule. Michelle is an accomplished entrepreneur, speaker, and now #1 International Best Selling author of Don't Snooze Your Dreams. As the founder of Venture Creative Collective, home of the innovative 'Website in a Day' service, Michelle helps small businesses thrive with innovative automation and web development solutions. Living with narcolepsy, Michelle has transformed personal challenges into powerful lessons, inspiring countless individuals to pursue their dreams despite obstacles. Her engaging keynotes draw from real-life experiences, offering practical strategies and inspiring stories. Michelle is accompanied by her medical alert service dog, Quinn. Keep Moving Forward Michelle managed to finish her book in record time of under a year of writing, and it was published five days ahead of schedule. She achieved this feat by disregarding habits we've grown to expect from authors. Instead of continuously sitting at a desk day after day, hoping she'd be inspired until the last word was written, she took a completely different approach. Listen in for the various ways she turned traditional writing on its head and created a book that is so conversational and comfortable that one reader described it as talking with a friend over a latte. One Book Written With A Much Bigger Picture In Mind Michelle's reasons for writing this book are incredible and inspiring. She wants to help others achieve their dreams with her DREAM method, but she also wants to help others like her be diagnosed as quickly as possible by spreading awareness of her journey from not knowing what was wrong to her diagnosis. You won't believe how big she is thinking when it comes to how she'd like her book distributed and who she would love to help her realize her dream. I've loved having Michelle on the show for these two episodes! If you're currently stuck writing your book or have always wanted to write a book, then this episode is your inspiration. Maybe something we say will be the tactic that works best for you to finally move forward and finish your book! Deconstruct the Fears Holding You Back Welcome back for a very special episode! We're celebrating the release of Michelle Weger's book, Don't Snooze Your Dreams. Michelle and I have been working together for 7 years now, and I've seen her do some really hard things. I'm so proud of her for writing this book and sharing how she reframes fear to accomplish her dreams and helping you all do the same. Michelle Weger is an accomplished entrepreneur, speaker, and now #1 International Best Selling author. As the founder of Venture Creative Collective, Michelle helps small businesses thrive with innovative automation and web development solutions. Living with narcolepsy, Michelle has transformed personal challenges into powerful lessons, inspiring countless individuals to pursue their dreams despite obstacles. Consequences of Advocacy As someone with an invisible disability, Michelle discusses how she's grown in her advocacy. She's faced a lot of tough pushback and consequences because her service dog is "too big," or people don't believe she's a service dog and don't believe Michelle even has a disability. After seeing how her mother, friends, and colleagues stood up for her, Michelle realized if she stood up for herself now, she would also be helping others. Only Two Types of Fear In her book, Michelle identifies only two types of fear we all suffer from. We have a social fear, which, boiled down, is the fear of embarrassment, and physical fear, which is fear of something that could actually kill or harm us. The metaphors she uses in the book are brilliant in reframing how you feel about fear. Keep your ears open for when we talk about the paper dinosaur and the terrorist in our heads. Fear and adversity are ever present throughout our lives and our careers. Whether we're facing a promotion at work or an autoimmune disease diagnosis, we will always be battling our paper dinosaurs and terrorists in our heads. Listen in to hear about Michelle's DREAM method, which anyone can use to overcome whatever obstacles they're facing in life and achieve their dreams. The Perpetual Chess Book Review series, Chess Books Recaptured is finally back! I am honored to be joined by renowned author and chess journalist Dirk Jan ten Geuzendam to discuss GM Jan Hein Donner's The King: Chess Pieces. The book is widely considered a 20th century classic and has been recommended by the likes of GMs Peter Svidler and Jan Gustafsson. It is a compilation of chess columns from a 3-time Dutch national champion, who spanned the chess generations between Max Euwe and Jan Timman. Donner is a brilliant, prescient and provocative writer who chronicles his own career, and also opines as the careers of Fischer, Spassky, Tal and others unfold in his proximity. Reading The King is a fun way to retrace 20th-century chess history, and the life and career of Donner. But, in my opinion, the book is not without its flaws. Donner's writing is sometimes offensive, particularly when he bombastically shares his views about women in chess. I was grateful to have Dirk Jan help me discern whether Donner was being sarcastic in some of his more scathing columns. After we finish discussing the book, I chat with Dirk Jan a bit about his current projects, and his work on New in Chess' excellent new podcast. By 2050, around 80 million metric tons of solar photovoltaic (PV) modules will reach the end of their life globally (according to NREL). 10 million metric tons will be in the United States. But this is not an issue for a far-off future. As we transition to renewable energy, we create a massive volume of waste just from manufacturing and transporting batteries and solar panels. So, what can we do to improve this process now, rather than in 25 years? Kelly Weger, the Director of Sustainability for North America at Qcells takes us through their plan to reduce embodied carbon across the entire supply chain—from manufacturing to end-of-life recycling. Expect to learn:How Qcells is reducing embodied carbon throughout their supply chain, from material sourcing to end-of-life recycling. The strategy behind Qcells and SolarCycle's circular economy superhero partnership. What it will take to create a true circular economy in solar, a vision Qcells is actively working towards. How certification standards like EPEAT validate a company's sustainability claims. How much Qcells has invested in their wafer manufacturing facility in Georgia (it's a massive number). This conversation lays out the proactive steps any organization can take to mitigate environmental impacts. A circular economy is not a far-off pipe dream, but to get there, we'll need to be far more intentional with how we build. If you want to connect with today's guest, you'll find links to his contact info in the show notes on the blog at https://mysuncast.com/suncast-episodes/.SunCast is presented by Sungrow, the world's most bankable inverter brand.SunCast is also supported by Trina. You can learn more about all the sponsors who help make this show free for you at www.mysuncast.com/sponsors.Remember, you can always find resources, learn more about today's guest and explore recommendations, book links, and more than 650 other founder stories and startup advice at www.mysuncast.com.Subscribe to Valence, our weekly Linkedin Newsletter, and learn the elements of compelling storytelling: https://www.linkedin.com/newsletters/valence-content-that-connects-7145928995363049472/You can connect with me, Nico Johnson, on:Twitter - https://www.twitter.com/nicomeoLinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/nickalus

It shook the people of LaSalle County, Illinois to their core in 1961. Three friends, savagely beaten to death while out hiking. No witnesses, no apparent motive. Police eventually charge 21-year-old local man Chester Weger with the killings. When he confesses in custody, it seems a slam dunk, until Weger recants, claiming police had bullied him into signing it. This is just the start of one of the longest running sagas in Illinois legal history, as Chester Weger begins a decades long fight to clear his name, and prove once and for all what really happened that snowy spring day at Starved Rock. They arrived from the Chicago suburb of Riverside, about 90 miles northeast of the park. On March 14, after checking into the Starved Rock Lodge, the three took an afternoon hike through St. Louis Canyon, but never returned. Their disappearances went unnoticed until March 16 when the husband of Frances Murphy phoned the lodge to inquire about his wife. Police organized a search of the park which led to the discovery of the women's bodies, bound with twine and partially disrobed, inside a cave in the canyon. All three suffered severe head trauma and a blood stained tree limb found nearby was determined to have been used to bludgeon them to death.

When Chester Weger went to trial in 1961, it was heralded by the media as the “Trial of the Century.” Throngs of people, ranging from hungry journalists to curious citizens, lined up outside the LaSalle County Courthouse in Ottawa, Illinois to try and get a coveted seat in the gallery. The quiet Illinois Valley community had never seen a spectacle of this kind. The press, armed with giant cameras and blinding flashbulbs, waited for the police to pull up and escort the accused into the courtroom. The Weger family had pooled what few financial resources they had to hire Chester an attorney – John McNamara. But even with a fine lawyer like McNamara, Chester was facing a prosecution, with its vast resources, that was interested in nothing less than the death penalty, execution by 50,000 volts. Three women were dead, and someone needed to pay. The public needed their pound of flesh and the State needed to put this case to rest. After a three-week trial, the jury returned its verdict: Guilty. But the question that haunted jurors long after the trial had ended was whether or not the right man had paid…Those doubts were evidenced by the fact that the jury elected not to sentence Chester Weger to the electric chair, as the State had demanded…Just in case they got it wrong. It's likely his resolve to prove his innocence that has kept Chester alive all these years. For 62 years and counting, Chester Weger has been waiting for that evidence, that full picture, to finally emerge and definitively reveal that YES. . . they got it wrong and real killers have never been brought to justice. Andy and Whitny dive into the trial of the century and discuss what the jurors were never told. Episode 17What did you say? Why should we listen? Social interactions are what make our life happy according to Active Listening: the Art of Empathetic Conversation. So really investing in others makes us happy, what a novel idea! Maybe something from the golden rule? DO unto others as you would have them do unto you. So you invest in others, they invest in you and the cycle continues! We talked about some different types of listening in the last episode, check it out!Active, global and passive.‘Global Listening'This involves the listener focusing on the speaker and picking up more than what is being said. According to https://www.personal-coaching-information.com/levels-of-listening.html Webster:Essential Meaning of listen1: to pay attention to someone or something in order to hear what is being said, sung, played2—used to tell a person to listen to what you are saying (Listen, no one is more concerned about this problem than I am.)3: to hear what someone has said and understand that it is serious, important, or true. Communication theory talks about the sender, the receiver, the message and the noise. The noise is what is taking over the idea of actually listening to someone. Noise is our emails, phones, other people, our own thoughts working on our answers. “We may believe that we are good listeners, but listening is more that waiting for your turn to interrupt”Oh yes, and judgement…don't judge or you will be judged by the same standard…Jesus said that in the Sermon on the Mount… We are judging people the whole time they are talking, or at least half, spending the other half thinking of our response. Our own bias gets in the way of our listening to a person, that is wrapped up in that judgement, even when it's unconscious.Six steps to becoming an active listener:1. Show the person that you are listening: nodding your head raising your eyebrows or smiling2. Pay attention to the speaker, not your own thoughts. Be present in the moment, easier said than done. You will have thoughts, just keep them at a distance.3. Practice non-judgement, just receive the massage to the end.4. Tolerate silence. This is a big one! In Radical Candor, book by Kim Scott, she says to ask a question and count to 6 without engaging in the silence. Just let it happen!5. Paraphrase: “so what you're saying is…”This will help to build trust as well according to (Weger 2021)6. Ask questions: when you finally respond, ask a question instead of stating your ideas. For more, check out the TED talk where Julian Treasure offers 5 more tips to improve your conscious listening. Verse of the day:Understand this, my dear brothers and sisters: You must be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to get angry. James 1:19.We have used this one before, but it is so relevant! Being quick to listen, means really hearing what people are saying. How quickly do you get angry when you see something you don't agree with online? Do you take the time to figure out where the person is coming from, or do you just to conclusions and since you are mostly safe, you speak your mind? Think about this verse next time you go to lash out at someone, quick listening, slow speaking. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app
