There's something magical about this time of year! I love fall, but after the initial excitement of pumpkin-flavored drinks and sweater weather wears off, the shorter days and chilly temperatures can leave me feeling physically and mentally drained. If this is the case for you, too, you're not alone. As the season changes, it's natural for our moods to shift too. Experts have confirmed that a decrease in daylight can affect our sleep, energy levels, and social ability. While it's essential to take steps to protect your mental health all year round, the change in seasons may require extra support. We need to be proactive to prevent the fall and winter blues from setting in. This year, I've decided to make a commitment to protect my mental health by picking up new hobbies that support me in a positive way. Today I want to talk with you about some of the hobbies I plan to take on and I've thrown in a few hobbies that I personally won't be doing but I do think they will be great for you. Many of us know that we feel better after “a good night's sleep” and more grumpy or foggy if sleep deprived. And there is now robust evidence similarly supporting that sleep is critical to not only our physical health but also our mental health. Poor or insufficient sleep has been found to increase negative emotional responses to stressors and to decrease positive emotions. For some, skipping sleep is a sign of strength and productivity and success. Without a doubt, a hobby can become a career, and who better to prove this than someone who has lived it as a reality?Meet today's guest, Simone Agoussoye, a Visual Artist, Graphics Designer, Mentor, and Teacher. In this episode, Simone describes her experience as a budding artist, offering insights into common challenges artists face, her passion for art, and key points from her success in the art world. Episode Highlights:[[01:21] How Simone and I met for the first time - she wasn't too happy with me by the way.[04:10] About our guest, Simone Agoussoye.[06:48] Simone's art career started right from childhood when she did a portrait of herself and knew that she wanted to be an artist.[10:54] The most difficult part about being an artist is pricing your artwork; it was a huge surprise for Simone as she realized how much people would pay for her art! [12:58] About Commissions: This involves being paid to create a painting for someone based on what they want and how they want it. It can constrain creativity due to the demands of the client. [16:09] Making out time to offer guidance to artists has been hugely important to Simone, especially because she didn't have any mentorship. She helps artists feel confident enough in themselves to charge good prices for their work because many people are truly amazed by their art. [23:54] How Simone uses Instagram reels to market her artworks, talk about her pricing, and help clients know what to expect from her. She also uses her content to inspire other artists as well as creators.[28:22] Compared to her other forms of art, Glass Art has appealed to Simone most deeply. [31:49] Simone wants to be remembered as someone who stood up for the culture, supported black women, and helped other artists be proud of their work by selling at their worth. [34:21] A lot of parents would rather encourage their kids to focus on education more than what they love doing because of the mindset that such hobbies would not be lucrative. [36:30] Simone's biggest win was when one of her works was featured in a Museum in DC, and won the People's Choice Award and a monetary award. [39:35] This lesson applies to any field; whether you're a coach or seller, raise your prices to the actual value of your worth. Connect with Simone on Instagram. Takeaways:You need to just go back to what you like; something that you can call your own. We lose touch with the things that we love doing because something else happens.Just because we are naturally talented at something doesn't mean that we can't live off of that talent. You can make something beautiful out of what is brokenThere's endless money in the art world, and your art is worth it. A lot of kids don't know that something they enjoy or do as a hobby could become a career for them.Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/JenellBStewart)

This episode of the Look on the Bright Side Podcast is sponsored by Prevent Child Abuse AmericaHealthy children become healthy adults. And healthy adults contribute to a more productive, equitable, and flourishing society.Prevent Child Abuse America is the nation's premier organization committed to preventing child abuse and neglect before it happens. A pioneer in the field for the past 50 years, PCA America is uniquely positioned to lead the movement to help children and families thrive—today, tomorrow, and for generations to come. Their approach works at two levels—boots-on-the-ground programs as well as actions that impact systems-level change. Evidence shows that stress and trauma caused by childhood adversity can interrupt healthy child development, and affect how the body responds to stress, putting children and adults at lifelong risk for health issues, like mental illness, depression, heart disease, and substance use problems, as well as economic consequences such as diminished educational achievement and job opportunities. Preventing childhood adversity is critical to building a more equitable, healthy and prosperous communities. And PCAA knows what works. Sex education has always been a difficult topic to discuss with our kids, and it's only getting harder. However uncomfortable this may be, you're the right person to do it for your kids. One of the most common parent worries is how do they start having a conversation about sex. Do you sit your kids down one day and have a serious conversation? Do you leave them brochures or books on their bed? What's the best way?As a parent, you cannot rely on the school system to provide sex education for your children. In many cases, schools provide no sex education at all; in others, the information provided is often inadequate or one-sided. Even if your child's school provides a very good sex education course, it may not begin until a time when your child needs your guidance on this subject. You should begin talking to your child long before they start asking you questions about sex education. If you do not, they will get their information from other sources that are unreliable, wrong, or incomplete. In today's episode, we're joined by Casey Wike, a mom, wife, sex educator, and parenting coach who has been in education for the past 13 years. She has a wide range of subject area expertise and has taught Pre-K through college-level courses as well as training teachers and parents. Casey now runs her own business, supporting parents and caregivers one on one and in small groups to help them feel comfortable and confident when talking to their children about subjects such as sex, relationships, and their bodies. This is going to be a fun but slightly uncomfortable conversation. However, I do feel this conversation is a great one to have with your children. If you missed the first 3 episodes, go here to start listening to the first episode n the series Today we are discussing how to value yourself beyond social media. We live in a world where people are excited about how they look online and are easily impacted by social media numbers, likes, comments and views (or the lack thereof). Is it more important to have more value online than you do offline?REFERENCESShownotes (here)I Know My Value Worksheet Freebie (here)Get On Their Radar Prep School (apply here) - if you are accepted to the prep school, you will be sent the details on how to enroll for FREE. Welcome to the 2nd episode in my Cultivating Your Value theme. If you missed the first episode, check it out here first. Today we are going to discuss a concept that I recently learned after reading "Don't Keep Your Day Job" by Cathy Heller. When learning how to express your true value it's best to understand what role will best suit your strengths and interests. In this episode I break down the idea of "4 archetypes" and I will help you discover how you can turn your passion into a sustainable career. My second theme we're going to dive into for 2020 is Cultivating Your Value. This is going to be so impactful because as a business coach I am meeting so many creators who want to start new platforms and have new business ideas, but they themselves don't recognize their value and they don't believe in themselves. They show me this through the things they say and do. I want to share with you the strategies they've been taught by me to hone in to their value on a deeper level.REFERENCESShownotes & Freebie (here)Get On Their Radar Prep School (apply here) - if you are accepted to the prep school, you will be sent the details on how to enroll for FREE.
