In the middle of the financial crisis we're experiencing, people are acting out of desperation, and emotions are possibly leading the charge. Raoul Pal is back to help us understand what is the current state of crypto, why FTX has been using customer money and more importantly, why is this not as unusual as you may think. Raoul's insights as a macro investor, former hedge fund manager that retired at 36, and co-founder of Real Vision, a financial media company, takes us to a high level view to string together how world history and demographics have brought us to this point. The key takeaway here for you is that, “the game of money is a game of psychology.” Tom Bilyeu Once you understand that this is a game, we need to know the players, the rules. The ultimate indicator of how you play this game, as Raoul explains it, is the future version of yourself and what that version wants. It indicates your debts, your risk tolerance, and what your next financial move will be following this interview. When you try to learn something new, or conquer something that intimidates you, do you get frustrated and overwhelmed?  This often leads to us giving up.  I have learned that as I take on a new challenge I actually follow a certain emotional pattern.I wanted to share this idea with you because I think on this happiness journey, it is important to recognize that there are struggles and ups and downs. When you identify something that you want to overcome or learn, it isn't usually easy and you can very quickly find yourself in overwhelm. In this conversation with Doris Belland, I realized that I definitely go through overwhelm, but on the other side of it I become more confident, and then eventually feel powerful for having overcome an obstacle or challenge I had. Here is a link to a picture of the emotional cycle Doris and I discuss. Doris and I started talking about this emotional cycle of learning, and then we just kept going from there. We so often let mindset issues get in our way as we try to conquer fears or learn something new. Doris's passion is helping women transform their lives by helping them take charge of their money and build their confidence. She is an educator, coach and mentor. As I chat with her in this episode you will hear her passion for teaching and empowering women come through.

This week, I’m talking about stock market crashes and the predictable emotional pattern that all crashes follow. Today, I’m bringing this conversation full circle, by talking about the complete emotional pattern of stock markets. So far, I’ve only talked about the emotions during a bottoming process, but it’s important to recognize what it looks like when then market comes out from the depths of the bottom and starts its inevitable climb again. Because in this crisis, it’s not a matter of if, it’s when that will happen.  The climb out from the bottom starts with hope. Signs appear that maybe the world won’t come to an end after all. After hope comes relief, then optimism.  After the financial crisis, it wasn’t until around 2012 before investors really started to feel optimistic about the future again. The housing market was still in rough shape and employment was still elevated at 8%. It was a long, slow, hard recovery coming out of the last recession and it took years for real optimism to return. Of course, by then if you waited until you started to feel optimistic to jump back into the market, you missed a massive opportunity, since the stock market bottomed over 3 years prior and had more than doubled in value since the lows in 2009.  Following optimism, excitement starts to enter as investors start to feel really good about the stock market. The emotions following optimism are in order: enthusiasm, exuberance, until finally at the top you have euphoria. The best example of euphoria was with the housing market in 2005. I was thinking about buying my first house around that time and looking at housing prices, and was hearing things like, if I don’t buy soon, I may never be able to afford to buy a house, because housing would only go up from there. Of course that was far from the truth, but I remember worrying that I would miss the opportunity to buy a home.  So it’s just as important to understand the emotions of a bull market, because the point of euphoria and the top of the stock market also marks the point of maximum risk.  That’s it for today. Consistency, confidence, community, and don't over think it! These lessons helped me transform from 246 pounds., 33 percent body fat, and 45-inch waist to 194 pounds, 12 percent body fat, and a 32-inch waist. That's 52 pounds and 14 inches in just 8 months! A special thanks to Brandon for documenting his progress so well, and for sharing his success story. I'm sure it will inspire many others to take action on their health and fitness. Where were you at physically and mentally before joining VIGOR Training? I joined VIGOR Training in May, 2018. Prior to that, I tried many different forms of fitness programs, classes, and camps. They gave me a good understanding of what it meant to be healthy and fit. Though I learned a lot over those four years, I realized that I was mainly doing body weight or simple kettlebell workouts, which weren't getting me much for results. In 2017, I stopped going to the gym completely. At the time, I couldn't make it work in my budget. "Not fitting it into my budget" became an excuse to not exercise. Within a few months, I'd gained weight, was consistently overeating, and didn't like how I looked. When I started VIGOR Training, I got my baseline body composition measurements: 246 pounds, 33 percent body fat, and a 45-inch waist. What was your tipping point? My tipping point was a couple of months before I joined VIGOR Training. At a guy's event called Advance, Tom Nikkola gave a talk on The Emotional Cycle of Change. I realized I was making excuses for not exercising, and needed to make a gym membership and the training program work into my budget. I sat down with my budget and worked it out to make it happen. Then, the next step was to then find a gym that was reasonably priced and had the right equipment. A month later, I found a good gym that had everything I needed. Then in May 2018, I began my journey with VIGOR Training. What lessons did you learn along the way, that you'd want to pass along to others? I've learned four key lessons from VIGOR Training:  consistency, confidence, community, and simplicity. 1. Consistency Becoming fit and healthy is not something that happens overnight.  It requires doing what needs to be done every single day.  When I started, I committed to training four days per week. So, every Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday, I woke up at 3:00 am and got to the gym by 4:00 am. I knew the only way I'd remain consistent was by working out before work. Some mornings, I didn't feel like going in but I would still go anyway. I committed to the process. Time at the gym was not the only thing I stayed consistent with. I followed the nutrition and supplement plans laid out in Tom's post, 28 Days: Four Weeks of Fat Loss. After those four weeks, I followed the recommendations for transitioning to a more sustainable way of eating, which I follow to this day. 2. Confidence This was something I didn't expect. I committed to becoming a better version of myself physically, and in the process, my confidence grew.  I gained confidence with the exercises, and my ability to handle more weight. This confidence grew outside of the gym, too. It allowed me to advance my life and move toward a new career path in wellness and life coaching! 3. Community One of my favorite parts of VIGOR Training is the community!  We all train hard, encourage one another through the app and VIGOR Training Facebook group, and see each other's progress on the leaderboards. Even though I train by myself, I know that my fellow VIGOR members are training too, and cheering me on. 4. Simplicity Training and nutrition don't have to be complicated.  If you have been training over a few weeks and you feel like you can add more weight, go for it!  It means you are getting stronger and you might even get a new personal record (PR)!  Trust me, there is nothing better than hitting a new PR after four w...

In this episode, Rocco and Jodi explain why recruiting for your business on social media requires patience. You have to be willing to play the “long game”. Having patience helps on an emotional level as well as a strategic level.     Here is what we mean:   First we look at the emotional level. Psychologists Don Kelley and Daryl Connor wrote a white paper titled “The Emotional Cycle of Change” (ECOC), which includes five stages of emotional experience when we are faced with change. Change takes time to get use to and it gets ugly if we don’t know what to expect. Rocco unpacks each stage of the ECOC starting at Uninformed Optimism, moving to Informed Pessimism, to the Valley of Despair, to Informed Optimism, and finally to Success.  If you are moving to a social-first recruiting strategy, rest assured that you will go through this process. Being aware of this process will keep you from quitting when you don’t see immediate results.   On a strategic level, having patience keeps you from being more than just all the other “noise” on social media. Jodi explains how to get past the noise by playing the long game with your content being both relevant and relatable to your audience. Most people post relevant content, but they have a tough time also making it relatable. Your success requires BOTH!   Stay connected with us for future content by subscribing to our podcast!

A few days after this episode is released is Veteran’s Day or Memorial Day. We wanted to acknowledge our servicemen and women who serve our country and that of our neighbor, the USA, and to thank you for helping make it possible for us to live lives of freedom and meaning. If you’re not a veteran I would encourage you to take in today’s episode regardless to better understand some of the sacrifices and challenges our military members face on the home front. It’s hard to imagine a marriage with more strain on it than that of a serviceman or woman and their spouse. I have to confess I thought looking into these marriages was mostly going to be negative — that we’d see a lot of challenges and not a lot of upside. And yet, of course, we’ll see that human resiliency is a beautiful thing and that there are a lot of positive, hopeful things happening in military marriages as well. Marriage and Military Deployment Of course there are a lot of challenges faced by both the serving soldier and the spouse who remains at home. These can include mental health issues, for example, Rates of depression are 12% among active service members and 13% among those who have returned from duty[i] Rates of PTSD are 2% among returned service members Wives who are left at home suffer from increased rates of depression, sleep disorders and acute stress[ii] Military service undeniably puts strain on a marriage, through the emotional roller-coaster of separation and reuniting, and the fears of losing your loved one each time they are deployed. This unfortunately leads to some of these marriages becoming unstable, resulting in divorce rates of 53% among military couples, which is higher than for non-military couples[iii]. So these are serious challenges, but it’s not all bad news. Despite the challenges of military service some couples report that it strengthens the marriage. A study from 2013[iv] interviewed 118 military couples and found that 44% of them reported "better relationship dynamics" upon reuniting, while 35% reported more destructive communication and 21% reported no change. Almost half of the couples in this situation were able to draw some positive from it, whether that’s from the strong bond they feel for each other, the sense of pride and purpose their service brings, or the support they receive from those around them. 93% of couples were able to identify at least one positive change as a result of the deployment, for example increased confidence and autonomy for the wife, or a new sense of purpose for the husband or a greater appreciation for family life upon return. So even in the midst of extremely tough circumstances couples can still find things to be grateful for. And that’s pretty awesome. If you are a couple in this situation, or you know someone who is about to face their first deployment, it can be useful to know what to expect. So let’s look at the emotional cycle of deployment and how couples typically react to each stage of the journey. Emotional Cycle of Deployment Couples typically go through five stages when one spouse is deployed to active service for a long period of time[v]. Pre-Deployment Stage This is the time from receiving orders to deploy to then actually leaving. It can be weeks or months. What to expect: The wife staying home may experience denial or high levels of fear, or even anticipate losing their spouse for good. They may also feel anger at their soldier husband for leaving, leading to conflict in the marriage. This is going to be a very stressful time so all kinds of emotions are to be expected. The soldier may become emotionally and physically distant as he starts training and bonding with his squad mates. The soldier is, in some sense, mentally already deployed, and already looking ahead to the challenges facing him[vi]. Both spouses may come into conflict and stress over trying to get their affairs in order, for example the husband doing all the important DIY tasks befo...
