David Dickenson is the founder of Suicide Squeeze Records. Based in Seattle, David's first release was a 7” from indie duo 764-Hero in 1996. Following its success, he used his label to release singles and EPs by local acts like Modest Mouse, Elliott Smith, and Pedro The Lion. Over the past 27 years, David has greatly expanded his roster outside the Northwest with releases from The Black Keys, The Melvins, Iron and Wine, The Coathangers, Death Valley Girls and Holy Wave. In this episode, David catches us up on the newest at Suicide Squeeze, what motivated him to start the label in the frist place and what has kept him interested for close to 3 decades. He shares his philosophy behind choosing artist to work with and also his experience of working with Elliott Smith and how that relationship started. We learn the meaning behind Suicide Squeeze and hear a couple tunes from Death Valley Girls. In this episode Joe and Julia discuss why "giving in" is not "giving up" and how her idea of acceptance shaped the record. Julia also tells us how she dealt with and recovered from losing her voice, why she wanted to sing quietly, and what the motivation was for truly making a record on her own. Julia shares her fantastic idea to perform the new record live and she hips us to the coolest festival in Long Beach, Happy Sundays (August 28th). Garage punk two piece Teen Mortgage climbed out of Washington DC's primordial hardcore soup in 2017. Drenched in the left - over fuzz and sludge of their local scene, the duo quickly bulldozed their way to a regional reputation after assaulting the publics' ears on incessant east coast tours and opening for notable bands such as Ron Gallo, Surf Curse, Big Business, Alex Lahey, The Chats, Bass Drum of Death, JEFF The Brotherhood, Mike Krol, The Coathangers, Meatbodies etc. In June 2019, Teen Mortgage sicced their ruthless EP "Life/Death" on the world through Brooklyn, NY's King Pizza Records. It has since sold out its limited cassette run and album cuts have earned sync deals with Vans Shoes, Evil Bikes, and Showtime series Shameless. The album also gained recognition as recipients of multiple 2020 Wammies (The Washington Area Music Awards) for Best Punk Band and Best Punk Song for "Falling Down." Teen Mortgage, return post pandemic with “Smoked”, their sophomore release through greasy Brooklyn cassette slingers, King Pizza Records. Once again, the duo are back to smack you over the head with seething surf punk riffs setting the scene to explain this cultural wasteland they call America. Live performances by Teen Mortgage, digital beat bumpers provided by Fat Kneel
dear livejournal, have you ever played music with other people?! silly question - i know a lot of you have. i haven’t done very much of it. but i’ve been doing it and it’s super fun. WHY DIDN’T ANYONE TELL ME ? i mean, indiana and rebs and i did a couple rock shows years ago. and i did a couple band lottery bands. and those were fun. but they didn’t last that long for whatever reason. rebs/kriz/mai/jenna and i did a couple rock band practices right before the pandemic started, so we don’t really know where that could have gone. but i like what i’m doing right now and we’re going to play a show this sunday and i’m super excited about it. i hope we all have a nice time.i think we will.DOWNLOAD RECORDINGsubscribe to the podcast here: http://feeds.feedburner.com/5432fun(intro by omar)Display Homes “Able To” E.T.APainter “i am perfectly safe” Important BodiesTOY “2” Live At Curry NightLaura Stevenson “Maker Of Things” The Mystic & the MasterMope City “Excuses Start To Thaw” News From HomeBAUS “Pop Song” Songs To Snake ToWLMRT “Stretching” WLMRT ForeverChurch fire “sunday” summer camp doom diaryBen Varian “Knife of Snow” Rey’s Fireside Christmastime Sing-AlongFrog “God Once Loved a Woman” Whatever We Probably Already Had ItEmma Parry “Brittle Brine” E.P.Nonnie Parry “Human” 7 Veils of FantasyR. Will and Nicholas discuss new music by Good Morning, Swazi Gold, and the Coathangers, plus live reports and a bonus live report you won't want to miss!
With a curled lip and a graveled voice, Atlanta-based band The Coathangers will tell you what they think. Their gritty garage music incorporates influences that range from early punk to the golden oldies of rock 'n' roll. And yet, their lyrics are undeniably modern. The trio's new album, The Devil You Know , features songs that address current social issues like drug addiction and gun control. We asked two members of The Coathangers, Meredith Franco and Julia Kugel, to add to our Georgia Playlist of songs written or performed by a Georgian. Their picks? "Frankenstein" by Subsonics and "Bad Kids" by Black Lips.

Buzz Buzz Buzz up in the air, the flies are bothering me again. I can't figure out why they've invaded my living space. One thing that gave me some release was talking to Steve this week about The Coathangers's record, "Suck My Shirt." It's great. I asked Steve to listen to Night Beats' Self-titled, "Night Beats." Did you know that's what self-titled means? Things in life aren't always that obvious, so don't be rude about it. Thanks for listening! - Carl

Mike and Orville sit down with The Coathangers (on tour supporting their new live album out on Suicide Squeeze Records) before their show at Austin's Barracuda club for an hour of bizarre stories. Squats in Switzerland and Tasmania, violent electric shocks and a fight that seemed to never end. Everyone is still sore from laughing. And also from a lifetime of not taking proper care of themselves.

Stephanie Luke grew up in a conservative, southern family, but she found her true tribe after discovering punk rock. She tells Joe about being a “nerdy” child, why she began playing drums in her mid 20s, how her band is central to her identity, the internal debate about whether to start a family, and why she wants to buy a house in the woods.

Everything is running about an hour late, and the opening band has already started by the time two-thirds of The Coathangers show up back stage for the interview. Complicating things even further, bass player Meredith Franco has a nasty cough. The life of a touring rock and roll band is pretty far down the list things any rational individual would want to do for a could. But it’s already cycled through the band once before, and the show must go on. Guitarist Julia Kugel, who does most of the speaking during the conversation, explains helpful that it’s all just part of life on the road. And besides, the trio (recently down from four) only just got over some nasty parasites. It was a miserable experience — tired muscles, hair falling out. But at least the group got an EP name out of the whole thing. All in all, The Coathangers have been remarkable resilient over their 10-plus years. The band start as something of a lark, with the help of a stolen drumset (long story). The group, Kugel explains, had to be coerced into playing its first show, hoping the space would flood or some other act of god might mercifully intervene. But the group has held on, and somehow manages to get better with every release.
In episode 2, hear some of Tom's new favorites from the following artists: Varsity, The Wedding Present, Girl Band, The Coathangers, Holy Tunics, Xiu Xiu, PJ Harvey, Palberta, Fletcher C Johnson, Colleen Green, and Julien Baker!

We have so many sights to show you! Lou and Jaime review Ice Howl, Coathangers, Cloud Nothings, Pissed Jeans, and the Lament Configuration that is the Sleater-Kinney Live Album (but really, I loved it). The cool kids get paid, gab about the Sea Monkey Black Market, which things are better, and ultimately have an accurate, if not entirely respectful conversation on Star Trek TNG Songs featured in Episode 26: “Cornflake Girl” – Tori Amis “Monkey” – George Michael “Crack the Earth” – Ice Howl “Perfume”, “Nosebleed Weekend” – The Coathangers “Modern Act” – Cloud Nothings “Jumpers” (live) – Sleater-Kinney
This week! Aimee-Beth returns to help me dissect the cringe-y music video and bizarrely outdated lyrics for “I Will Buy You A New Life” by desperate-ex-husband-in-band-form Everclear. Aimee recalls enjoying the emotional honesty (read: oversharing) of lead singer Art, while I remember knowing, even at ten years old, that something was very wrong with the song’s message. Also: we cry about the US Presidential election and celebrate my victory at the twitter polls, where, coincidentally, I also won with a mere plurality of votes; vent some rage at Maroon 5; and uncover what the band Lit has been up to. Music We Like: Courtney Barnett (again), Mouse on the Keys, Nocturnal Habits (again), L.A. Witch, The Coathangers, New Ruin, Super Unison
Here is an interview with The Coathangers at the 2016 Hopscotch Music Festival in Raleigh, NC right before their gig at Kings.
Ep 62: Julia Kugel - The Coathangers Julia tells BD about her childhood, immigrating to the U.S. from Belarus. The Classical Music her Mom always had playing and her Classical Guitar teacher who lived in his car. Apparently the band was pretty reluctant to play their first show, sign their first record deal and Julia leans on her band members Stephanie and Meredith for strength and divisiveness. This podcast is all about our week's record shopping in Austin, although I promise I am done going on about SXSW, so those of you bored to tears by the whole business are entirely safe, I promise. We did buy a fair bit of vinyl while we were over there though, whether it be directly from the bands at their shows (usually whilst still pished and giddy from enjoying the gig) or on one of our particular excursions to either End of an Ear or Waterloo Records. There is such pleasure to be had from poking through rack upon rack of vinyl, and whilst I have no real quibble with digital music, I think the sheer ritual and physical relationship it sacrifices can't really be matched in the digital realm. 01.
