Julia Kugel is the singer/guitarist and founding member of The Coathangers.  She will release her first full length solo record , Derealization  on September 30 with Suicide Squeeze Records under the moniker Julia, Julia.  In this episode Joe and Julia discuss why "giving in" is not "giving up" and how her idea of acceptance shaped the record.  Julia also tells us how she dealt with and recovered from losing her voice, why she wanted to sing quietly, and what the motivation was for truly making a record on her own.  Julia shares her fantastic idea to perform the new record live and she hips us to the coolest festival in Long Beach, Happy  Sundays (August 28th).  We hear a few tunes from the new record and Joe threatens to join with Julia, Julia when she plays Seattle. https://suicidesqueeze.net/2022/07/julia-kugel-of-the-coathangers-announces-debut-solo-lp-derealization-under-new-moniker-julia-julia/https://happysundaysfest.com/https://hearjuliajulia.bandcamp.com/album/derealizationTour Stories is sponsored by Izotope. Garage punk two piece Teen Mortgage climbed out of Washington DC's primordial hardcore soup in 2017. Drenched in the left - over fuzz and sludge of their local scene, the duo quickly bulldozed their way to a regional reputation after assaulting the publics' ears on incessant east coast tours and opening for notable bands such as Ron Gallo, Surf Curse, Big Business, Alex Lahey, The Chats, Bass Drum of Death, JEFF The Brotherhood, Mike Krol, The Coathangers, Meatbodies etc. In June 2019, Teen Mortgage sicced their ruthless EP "Life/Death" on the world through Brooklyn, NY's King Pizza Records. It has since sold out its limited cassette run and album cuts have earned sync deals with Vans Shoes, Evil Bikes, and Showtime series Shameless. The album also gained recognition as recipients of multiple 2020 Wammies (The Washington Area Music Awards) for Best Punk Band and Best Punk Song for "Falling Down." Teen Mortgage, return post pandemic with “Smoked”, their sophomore release through greasy Brooklyn cassette slingers, King Pizza Records. Once again, the duo are back to smack you over the head with seething surf punk riffs setting the scene to explain this cultural wasteland they call America. Live performances by Teen Mortgage, digital beat bumpers provided by Fat Kneel

5...4...3...2...fun!!

dear livejournal, have you ever played music with other people?! silly question - i know a lot of you have. i haven’t done very much of it. but i’ve been doing it and it’s super fun. WHY DIDN’T ANYONE TELL ME ? i mean, indiana and rebs and i did a couple rock shows years ago. and i did a couple band lottery bands. and those were fun. but they didn’t last that long for whatever reason. rebs/kriz/mai/jenna and i did a couple rock band practices right before the pandemic started, so we don’t really know where that could have gone. but i like what i’m doing right now and we’re going to play a show this sunday and i’m super excited about it. i hope we all have a nice time.i think we will.DOWNLOAD RECORDINGsubscribe to the podcast here: http://feeds.feedburner.com/5432fun(intro by omar)Display Homes “Able To” E.T.APainter “i am perfectly safe” Important BodiesTOY “2” Live At Curry NightLaura Stevenson “Maker Of Things” The Mystic & the MasterMope City “Excuses Start To Thaw” News From HomeBAUS “Pop Song” Songs To Snake ToWLMRT “Stretching” WLMRT ForeverChurch fire “sunday” summer camp doom diaryBen Varian “Knife of Snow” Rey’s Fireside Christmastime Sing-AlongFrog “God Once Loved a Woman” Whatever We Probably Already Had ItEmma Parry “Brittle Brine” E.P.Nonnie Parry “Human” 7 Veils of FantasyR. SHOW NOTES Ch. 1: Justice Interruptus with Paul Waldman - On the Media with Brooke Gladstone and Bob Garfield - Air Date 4-26-19 Paul Waldman looks at the climates of Clinton's impeachment and the possibility of Trumps. The split between the GOP and Democrats on government is a beast that keeps the process from working. Ch. 2: The Case for and against Impeachment with Tom Steyer - Deconstructed with Mehdi Hasan - Air Date 5-2-19 Steyer believes the tactics that worked in 1970 against Nixon will work today. He supports Pelosi because "she changes with the times". Ch. 3: Impeachment Looms with Mehdi Hasan Part 1 - The Majority Report - Air Date 5-24-19 A Republican congressman is calling for Trump's impeachment and we need to remember that there is a cost of NOT impeaching. Ch. 4: Congress' Duty - Stay Tuned with Preet - Air Date 5-23-19 It's Congress' duty to impeach - if you view what the president did as wrong, then you must use your power to stop them. Ch. 5: Democrats Skirmish Over Impeachment with Michael Scherer - Brian Lehrer Show - Air Date 5-22-19 If we focus on impeachment, could the Democrats lose the House again? Ch. 6: Impeachment Looms with Mehdi Hasan Part 2 - The Majority Report - Air Date 5-24-19 Pelosi is ridiculous, and she wants Trumps closest friends and family to have an intervention with him in lieu of impeachment. She's pivoting to protect her political assets. Ch. 7: Pelosi Reluctantly Joins the Impeachment Train with Heather Digby Parton - Ring of Fire - Air Date 5-26-19 Heather Digby Parton, a contributor for Salon, joins Ring of Fire’s Sam Seder, to talk about Nancy Pelosi slowly coming around to the idea of impeaching Trump. With a curled lip and a graveled voice, Atlanta-based band The Coathangers will tell you what they think. Their gritty garage music incorporates influences that range from early punk to the golden oldies of rock 'n' roll. And yet, their lyrics are undeniably modern. The trio's new album, The Devil You Know , features songs that address current social issues like drug addiction and gun control. We asked two members of The Coathangers, Meredith Franco and Julia Kugel, to add to our Georgia Playlist of songs written or performed by a Georgian. Their picks? "Frankenstein" by Subsonics and "Bad Kids" by Black Lips.

Everything is running about an hour late, and the opening band has already started by the time two-thirds of The Coathangers show up back stage for the interview. Complicating things even further, bass player Meredith Franco has a nasty cough. The life of a touring rock and roll band is pretty far down the list things any rational individual would want to do for a could. But it’s already cycled through the band once before, and the show must go on.  Guitarist Julia Kugel, who does most of the speaking during the conversation, explains helpful that it’s all just part of life on the road. And besides, the trio (recently down from four) only just got over some nasty parasites. It was a miserable experience — tired muscles, hair falling out. But at least the group got an EP name out of the whole thing. All in all, The Coathangers have been remarkable resilient over their 10-plus years. The band start as something of a lark, with the help of a stolen drumset (long story). The group, Kugel explains, had to be coerced into playing its first show, hoping the space would flood or some other act of god might mercifully intervene. But the group has held on, and somehow manages to get better with every release.

On this week's episode, JP sits down with the SLUG team, who trekked down to Austin for all the excitement that is SXSW 2012! SXSW (South By Southwest) is a yearly film and music festival held every March in Austin, Texas. The music portion of the festival runs over six days featuring hundreds of national and international musicians and bands, in dozens of showcases held at venues and temporary stages throughout the city. We talk about live performances from Ceremony, Black Ryder, Tycho, Bass Drum Of Death, The Gossip, Diamond Rugs, The Coathangers, Mr. Gnome, Ume, Guadalupe Plata, The Sword, Jesus & Mary Chain, and the SXSW experience overall. Did you attend SXSW? Give us a ring about something from the festival, drunk dial us, ask for our advice on anything, or just send us your feedback by calling our automated voicemail line at 858-233-9324. You might get played on the show! … read more The post Episode #38 – SXSW 2012 first appeared on SLUG Magazine.

The Toadcast - the weekly podcast from Song, by Toad

This podcast is all about our week's record shopping in Austin, although I promise I am done going on about SXSW, so those of you bored to tears by the whole business are entirely safe, I promise. We did buy a fair bit of vinyl while we were over there though, whether it be directly from the bands at their shows (usually whilst still pished and giddy from enjoying the gig) or on one of our particular excursions to either End of an Ear or Waterloo Records. There is such pleasure to be had from poking through rack upon rack of vinyl, and whilst I have no real quibble with digital music, I think the sheer ritual and physical relationship it sacrifices can't really be matched in the digital realm. 01.
