We had the pleasure of interviewing Atlas Genius over Zoom video!Australian-based brothers, Atlas Genius are thrilled to release their new album End of the Tunnel. The band has put together a special recipe for the new collection of songs. Album ingredients: Lost love, guilt, passion, a dash of social commentary, existential crises, reckless abandon, and honest self-criticism. May contain traces of lust.2024 also marks the 11-year anniversary of the band's debut album When It Was Now, which features top charting songs including the certified platinum “Trojans” which hit #3 on the US Alternative charts and “If So” which peaked at #8.   About Atlas Genius: Their Father was a self made man. He started as a miner, miles below the Australian earth before becoming a successful engineer. But his dreams fell apart following an incapacitating heart attack and a 2 year battle for his life. While their mother tended to their ailing father, the 3 teenage sons, Keith, Steven & Michael grew up quickly having to provide for the family. Eldest Keith's job at KFC wasn't enough, so the Jeffery brothers started playing gigs to pay the family's bills. Even the youngest, 14 year old drummer Michael, had to balance school work and early mornings with their late night cover band shows in the local Adelaide clubs. After a few years and the healing of their father, the band built a recording studio in their home's garage. Out of this home studio came the band's debut album and certified platinum hit single “Trojans.” Over their career, Atlas Genius has traveled the world supporting Weezer, Blink 182, Incubus, Silversun Pickups, The Neighborhood, Passion Pit, Imagine Dragons, The Kooks, and more. Atlas have performed at some of the most iconic and prestigious festivals including Lollapalooza, Austin City Limits, Outside Lands, Bottlerock, Shaky Knees, and Life is Beautiful and has been featured on Jimmy Kimmel, Jimmy Fallon, James Corden, Conan O'Brien, David Letterman and Jay Leno. We want to hear from you! On this episode of the Adventures of Pipeman, Pipeman is joined by the Ries Brothers, a musical duo comprising Kevin and Charlie, at the Shaky Knees festival. Charlie expresses his excitement at being part of the festival's incredible line-up, having followed it for the last ten years. Pipeman commends them for sticking it out in the music industry, stating that it usually takes about twenty years to become an overnight success. When asked about their music, Charlie explains that they grew up playing classic rock and blues covers and then progressed to writing their original music. They describe their music as rock and roll, blues rock, and jam rock, with a mix of high energy and chill songs. They try to create a unique vibe at their shows, and being a two-piece band, they aim to make each song interesting and not let anyone get bored in the crowd. To achieve this, they bring in different instruments such as ukulele and melodica. Kevin describes their music as high-energy with a bit of reggae influence. He grew up listening to a lot of old school reggae, and this sets them apart from other bands. They throw in a little bit of reggae vibe, being from Florida. Overall, they are a heavy rock band, and the crowd at the festival loves their heavy blues rock stuff. Charlie and Kevin are from St. Pete, Florida, and their manager is from Boynton Beach. Pipeman is based in South Florida, near West Palm, and he shares his connection with the Ries Brothers' manager. They are currently working on new music, trying to keep their high-energy vibe and incorporating their reggae influence. They are thrilled to be performing at the festival and grateful for the opportunity to showcase their unique style to a broader audience. Sunroom expresses how amazing it was to be at the festival and the band's favorite performance so far. Pipeman asks them about their usual festival experiences, and they mention that they haven't played too many but their most notable one was ACL. They talk about how they have come a long way since their ACL set that was botched, and it was great to redeem themselves. Pipeman shares a funny experience of doing an interview where he thought he sucked, but the interviewer thought it was the greatest interview ever. Pipeman then asks the band members what prompted them to start playing music. Sun Room explains that after they released their first EP, which got more attention than any high school bands he had played in, he realized that music could be his full-time job. It spurred them on to keep grinding and releasing music, and touring. Pipeman shares his experience with the Metallica Black album and how it changed everything for him. He goes on to say that he used to be a gatekeeper asshole, but now he understands that they deserve the recognition they get. Later, Pipeman asks the band members what prompted them to start playing in a band. Sun Room explains that he has never thought about what initially got him into it, but he got his answer now. Pipeman shares his personal experience of getting a guitar as a kid and hearing the Metallica Black album, and that's when he knew music was life. The band members then talk about how they started playing together, and Sunroom explains how they have evolved into a more organic band. They talk about their current project and how they are taking their time with it. The conversation takes a humorous turn as they discuss a recent incident with a redneck audience member who sprayed everyone. The group talks about how incidents like these are not uncommon in the music industry, and they joke about past incidents involving scat play and defecation on drum sets. As the interview progresses, the conversation shifts to the topic of boring interviews and how they can be made more interesting. The Aquadolls, members of the band, express their frustration with being asked the same generic questions about their genre repeatedly. They emphasize that the interviews should be fun and engaging, with unique and thought-provoking questions. Pipeman agrees, sharing his experience with interviews at festivals where bands are asked the same mundane questions. The group continues to joke and have fun, discussing how some band names can be difficult to pronounce, and how they enjoyed hearing the Aquadolls say their band name in a cool way. On this episode of the Adventures of Pipeman, Pipeman is joined by Dan, Stephanie, and Chandler from the band NRCSSST. Pipeman is curious about the name of the band and wonders who came up with it. Dan explains that the name came from him, and it's quite unique as there are not many words you can take the vowels out of and still get a recognizable word. The band's name contains three S's, which is kind of a giveaway. Narcissist has never been a problem for people to figure out. Pipeman then asks Stephanie about her tattoos, and she tells him that they are just a lot of bullshit stories. She has had them for a long time and doesn't see the sun very often, which is why they still look good. She shares that she plans to get a free tattoo and haircut later that day. Pipeman asks the band to describe their music without using a genre. They decide to create their own genre and come up with Elder, Millennial, "Why Am I Still Here" Core, which also has a little bit of dancey fun times in it. Dan adds that it's got a beat, and Stephanie explains that there's a little bit of darkness but not too much. The conversation then turns to Pipeman's musical abilities. He shares that he has played the drums, guitar, and sang thrash metal, but he sucked at all of them. Dan jokes that Pipeman should join Narcissist, and Pipeman comes up with an idea to start wearing a mask and perform with the band so that people will wonder who he is, just like Slipknot. On this episode of the Adventures of Pipeman, Pipeman is joined by Gringo Star, a band from Atlanta, Georgia. The band, which has been playing for a long time, is at Shaky Knee, and they discuss the rainy weather, which they hoped would turn into a Woodstock vibe. The band recounts how they kept their gear dry during the rain, and one of them shares that some of the best shows he has ever seen were downpours. They all agreed that it is better than extreme heat, which can be unbearable. Pipeman shares an experience from a festival he attended last year in France called Hell Fest, where it was 104 degrees, and he did interviews outside because it was cooler. The press tent was like a sauna, and he would take the rain over that any day. The band shares that the best gigs are when it is raining, and there is a little mud fest, and everyone is just having a blast. When asked to describe their music, Gringo Starr shares that they play a variety of rock and roll, and they have been playing together since 2007. The band is made up of two brothers, who started playing together when one was in high school and the other was in middle school. They started playing at middle school dances, and now they are playing at Shaky Knee. The band has played at music midtown, and they recount their experience with their old band name. You can find everything you need on how to follow them on social media, how to get the new music, how to buy some of the merch all over on their website gringostarr.net so be sure to check it out if you like what you hear.On June 2, Atlanta's Gringo Star will release their new album On And On And Gone out June 2 on My Anxious Mouth. Gringo Star is also announcing U.S. tour dates. The upcoming U.S. tour will include shows in New York City, Atlanta and more. All upcoming shows are listed below.Gringo Star have made a name for themselves as one of Atlanta's most valuable rock & roll exports, carrying the torch for hazy, psychedelic garage rock in a city primarily valued for its contributions to hip-hop. Brothers Nick and Peter Furgiuele are the constant creative force of Gringo Star, and have outlasted wave after wave of buzz bands and indie blog darlings, carving their own career path through constant reinvention and an unparalleled work ethic, amassing a loyal and enthusiastic international fanbase along the way. Their mind-bending take on doo-wop inspired R&B and British Invasion rock & roll has garnered praise from the likes of Pitchfork, Consequence of Sound, Paste Magazine, KEXP & more, and landed them on bills alongside everyone from Cat Power and Feist to The Black Angels and Weezer, not to mention tours with Wavves, And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead, and their Atlanta-based contemporaries Black Lips.Though the band's 2008 album, All Y'all serves as the start of Gringo Star's storied career, the band's core songwriting duo, the Furgiuele brothers, have been playing together since they were kids, born into a family with strong ties to Georgia music history. “Our grandad started out in radio in the '40s and '50s in Columbus, GA.,” Nick explains. “He was a huge promoter of R&B back when it was still super segregated, and he was playing black music and putting on shows with Little Stevie Wonder, James Brown, Sam Cooke & the Soul Stirrers, a lot of Gospel shows. So we grew up hearing all these stories, listening to all this music. Our grandfather was inducted into the Georgia Music Hall of Fame posthumously. And my grandma—all her photo albums are like Jackie Wilson shirtless backstage, hanging out.”With their family's R&B connections and their young obsession with early rock & roll, it wasn't long before the two brothers started making music themselves. When Nick was 15 and Peter just 11, they picked up bass and drums, respectively, formed a rhythm section and joined their first garage band. “We played together in the house and messed around on a little two-track,” Nick says. “We've been writing songs together since before Peter was a teenager. We even played his 8th-grade dance.”Eventually, the brothers formed Gringo Star and began the career that has come to define their last decade. All Y'all and Count Yer Lucky Stars forced the world to pay attention. 2013's Floating Out To See found the band experimenting with producing their own records and layering more keys and strings into their compositions. 2016's The Sides and In Between contained some of the finest songwriting of the Furgiuele's career, and 2018's Back to the City reinvigorated their sound with a new intensity, equally dark and shimmering. The band's legendary live energy was captured in 2019's album Controlled Burn (Live In Atlanta). Despite multiple personnel changes, Nick and Peter have remained steadfast in their partnership, continuing to stand by one another through thick and thin in their artistic endeavours. There's no telling what comes next for Gringo Star, but there's no doubt that the Furgiuele brothers will continue to write and record on their own terms. “We've had a lot of opportunities over the past ten years. If we had an idea about something we wanted to, we did it,” says Nick. “I can't think of a single thing I'd change."Gringo Star Tour Dates U.S. Tour Dates 04.27 - New York, NY @ TV EYE04.29 - Asheville, NC @Fleetwoods05.05 - Atlanta, GA @ Shaky Knees Festival05.18 - Cincinnati, OH @ Northside Tavern05.19 - Green Bay, WI @ Badger State Brewery05.20 - Windsor, ON @ Meteor06.02 - Chattanooga, TN @ JJ's BohemiaTake some zany and serious journeys with The Pipeman aka Dean K. Tour Dates 04.27 - New York, NY @ TV EYE04.29 - Asheville, NC @Fleetwoods05.05 - Atlanta, GA @ Shaky Knees Festival05.18 - Cincinnati, OH @ Northside Tavern05.19 - Green Bay, WI @ Badger State Brewery05.20 - Windsor, ON @ Meteor06.02 - Chattanooga, TN @ JJ's BohemiaPipeman in the Pit is a music and interview segment of The Adventures of Pipeman Radio Show (#pipemanradio) and from The King of All Festivals while on The Pipeman Radio Tour. On this episode of Headliners, Greg is joined by WELSHLY ARMS to talk about their new album WASTED WORDS & BAD DECISIONS.After dropping their anthemic single “Legendary” in 2017, the indie rock world was quickly introduced to Welshly Arms' penchant for unleashing larger-than-life alt-rock bangers and spine-tingling live performances. Their 2018 album No Place is Home has garnered over 350M total streams and provides a sensational musical journey that hits all the swaggery notes. Put simply, the band injects a powerful dose of emotion that continues to leave the Welshly Arms' faithful enamored. The band will be extremely active this spring. As they are set to drop their lead-up single “World is Watching” on March 24th before releasing their full-length album Wasted Words & Bad Decisions, on April 6th. The album comes right before the band embarks on a long-anticipated return to Europe for a month-long tour. Wasted Words & Bad Decisions was recorded in an old farmhouse in the outskirts of Cleveland, Ohio as the world endured lockdown. The tranquil and comfortable setting provided the platinum-selling five-piece band a welcome respite from the grueling demands of touring stateside and overseas. "With a long pause in touring and live performances due to the pandemic, we took time to reflect and refocus on our music,” says Sam Getz [Lead, Singer, Guitar]. “These songs speak to who we all are in this exact moment of our lives. Musically, we wanted this record to bring us back to the raw rock-n-roll that we had built the band on when we were jamming in the basement together. But, of course, we've also matured and gelled as musicians after touring the world together, and I think that intersection is what made Wasted Words & Bad Decisions so fun and rewarding to create." After dropping their anthemic single “Legendary” (now a certified platinum single in several European countries that has been streamed over 250 Million times) in 2017, the five Midwesterners were catapulted from playing local music clubs in Cleveland onto the world's largest rock festival stages including Lollapalooza, The Reading & Leeds Festival, Bottlerock, Rock am Ring, Hangout Music Fest, Shaky Knees, and more in less than a year's time. The quick rise for Getz, Jimmy Weaver [bass, vocals], Mikey Gould [drums], Bri Bryant [vocals], and Jon Bryant [voca ls] saw the band play for massive sold-out festival crowds instantly hooked by “Legendary” and other Welshly Arms' hits such as “Indestructible”, “Learn To Let Go”, and “Sanctuary” (the latter two were both Top Ten Songs in Germany) In mere months, Welshly Arms became indie-rock darlings cherished from Los Angeles to Warsaw. While being on the road in Europe and North America for seemingly two straight years, Welshly Arms' tunes appeared in popular media including Quentin Tarantino's award-winning film “The Hateful Eight” (Trailer), Underground 6 (Netflix), Empire (Fox), FIFA (EA Sports), and were used by major brands such as Miller Lite, Jeep, ESPN, MLB, NFL, and NASCAR, among many others. Heavily influenced by the classic Cleveland sound, the eclectic group harkened back to their diverse musical roots for their latest release; from jazz to soul, gospel to blues, rock to alternative, and everything in between. Wasted Words... is an impressive sonic evolution for a band that's known for smooth melodies, momentous choruses, bold guitar instrumentation, and slick production techniques. Hardcore fans will instantly recognize recently released singles such as “Are You Lonely,” “save me from the monster in my head,” and “Stand”, while fresh standouts like “Dangerous,” “One More...

Together with American Songwriter and Sean Ulbs of The Eiffels, we had the pleasure of interviewing Michigander over Zoom video! Michigander,is an exciting indie rock artist on the rise who has already generated more than 12 million streams globally. Michigander recently released the uplifting rock anthem “Let Down” via C3 Records, which has been receiving lots of support and playlisting from Spotify, Apple Music and SiriusXM’s Alt Nation, including placement on Spotify’s New Music Friday, and is currently making waves at AAA radio across the country. PRESS HERE to listen/watch the official music video and hear the folk-tinged B-Side “48” that was recently released.PRESS HERE to watch a live performance of “Let Down” from Lincoln Hall in Chicago, which was recorded in August. Michigander also recently took the virtual stage for Lollapalooza’s 2020 livestream.Michigander emanates a magnetic Midwest spirit, delivering uplifting anthems, raised even higher by six-string fireworks, empowering lyrics, and understated arena ambition. The sonic alter ego of Michigan native, singer, songwriter, producer, and guitarist Jason Singer, Michigander, which wasbrought to life during 2014 while moving across his home state to Kalamazoo, has garnered the acclaim of NPR, Paste, NME, SPINand many more, in addition to his 12 million-plus streams. In 2016, the independent single “Nineties” took off, claiming real estate on multiple major Spotify playlists and cracking 1 million streams on the platform. Between releasing the 2018 EP Midland, Jason and his band shared the stage with the likes of Ra Ra Ra Riot, Tokyo Police Club, Twin Peaks, and JR JR in addition to gracing the stages of festivals with alt-j, Solange, Foster The People, and Run The Jewels, to name a few.Signed to C3 Records, Michigander recorded and released the EP Where Do We Go From Here in 2019and expanded his sound, as illuminated on the singles “Misery” and “Popular,” the latter of which saw placements on Spotify’s The New Alt, Fresh Finds, and Rock’n Vibes playlists and peaked at #21 on the AAA charts.Jason wrote everything for his latest EP in his bedroom over the course of six months and co-produced the collection alongside Jake Rye. He emphasized the prominence of solos—in every song—making what he aptly describes as, “big pop songs disguised with guitars.”Ultimately, listening to Michigander makes you feel at home, like you’re driving through the Midwest. And he’s only getting started. Michigander will be releasing lots more music in 2021, and pre-Covid was confirmed for appearances at Electric Forrest, Shaky Knees, Lollapalooza and Firefly, so big things are on the horizon for the rising artist. We want to hear from you! Interview with The Frights

Bringin' it Backwards

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 28, 2020 40:41

We had the opportunity to interview The Frights!Every live show from The Frights is both high-energy and hyper-emotional, a free-for-all fueled by crowds of thousands screaming along to intensely honest lyrics about anxiety and angst, breakups and bad crushes, mental health and medication. Since 2015, the San Diego surf-punk band has set that surreal phenomenon in motion at over 300 shows across the U.S. and Europe, as well as at festivals like Lollapalooza, Shaky Knees, Ohana, Riot Fest and this year’s Coachella. On their new album Live at the Observatory, The Frights capture all the dizzy chaos of their live set, an experience that’s equal parts a wildly unsupervised kid’s birthday party and an off-the-rails group-therapy session. Recorded at the sold out kick off show of their Hypochondriac headline tour at The Observatory in Santa Ana on September 8, 2018, Live at the Observatory features 14 songs spanning the band’s complete catalog. After kicking off with the anthemic frenzy of “Kids” (a cut from their 2016 sophomore effort You Are Going To Hate This), the band delivers full-tilt fan favorites like “Cold” and “Crust Bucket,” then turns tender on acoustic-guitar-driven tracks like “Hold Me Down” and the painfully vulnerable “Alone,” both from their 2018 Epitaph Records debut, Hypochondriac. Throughout the entire set—whose encore includes the dreamy doo-wop of “Makeout Point,” a cut from The Frights’ debut EP Fur Sure—the love and solidarity from the crowd is palpable, their shared confession giving way to something way more fun and more powerful than ordinary catharsis. Inspired by attending a show at the aforementioned Observatory, Carnevale and Dotson formed The Frights soon after they graduated from high school. From there, they released two EPs and their self-titled full-length debut in 2013. With the addition of Marc Finn on drums, the band released You Are Going To Hate This in February 2016. Along with debuting on the CMJ Top 200, the album earned acclaim from outlets like Brooklyn Vegan (who praised its title track as a “super catchy blend of Weezer, SoCal pop punk, and Burger-y garage rock”). The band’s line-up was further solidified with the addition of Jordan Clark for their extensive touring in support of You Are Going To Hate This. The Frights signed to Epitaph in early 2018 and got to work on Hypochondriac. Like You Are Going To Hate This, the band’s third full-length was produced by Zac Carper of FIDLAR (who’s also produced albums for SWMRS and Dune Rats). But for Hypochondriac, Carnevale took a more deliberate and exacting approach to his songwriting, resulting in The Frights’ most nuanced work to date. After a sold out show at The Observatory North Park in their hometown of San Diego the same date as the release of the album, the band embarked on the Hypochondriac headline tour that is documented on this live album. https://thefrights.com/Mikey Carnevale (vocals/guitar) - Richard Dotson (bass) - Marc Finn (drums) - Jordan Clark (guitar) We want to hear from you! Please email Tera@BringinitBackwards.com www.BringinitBackwards.comCREDITS: Theme Song: Scott Russo Design: Oscar Rodriguez

Home Before Dark hearkens back to a time when you and your friends in the neighborhood were forced inside. Where you discovered a level of brotherhood/sisterhood that could only be forged through playing video games, watching movies, television and discussing the finer things in life over an Orange Lavaburst Hi-C and Bagel Bites. We take the time out to talk about the current games we're playing, movies we've seen recently(new or old) and all the things in between. It's almost that time.  The streetlights just came on and you had better leave soon to be Home Before Dark.  Find the whole gang on twitter @timherband @the_ARC1TECTand collectively @HomeB4Dark

Since singer-songwriter Noah Kahan last joined The What Podcast, he's been all over the place. From being selected as a Shaky Knees headliner to guesting on SNL, it's been nothing but onwards and upwards for the artist. On this High Five Clip, Kahan talks with Brad, Barry, and Lord Taco ahead of his appearance at Bonnaroo 2023.Kahan talks about how important it is to be honest about mental health, as well as how much it means to him that his songs might be able to help someone in need. In particular, he goes into the difficulties of actually opening up.“It's like a bunch of people telling you that at the bottom of a pit of fire, there's a big cushion,” he says. “You have to trust yourself to jump into it, but all you know is the fire, and all you can see is the fire, and all these people are like, ‘I promise you that there's a big pillow at the bottom.' It takes a long time for people to make that fall, it takes an incredible amount of trust to tell someone how you're feeling.”Listen to The What Podcast chat with Noah Kahan here or watch it via YouTube.
