Abbreviating names, the big dawg hours, and keeping it casual cool. Gabriel Fernandez (Levitation Room) "East Los Angeles quartet Levitation Room's floaty, cosmic songs are always a trip. Since forming nearly a decade ago, they've self-produced dizzying, otherworldly music that's connected with fellow travelers in the hallucinogenic world of outré rock music. Led by singer and guitarist Julian Porte along with founding members Gabriel Fernandez (lead guitar) and Johnathan Martin (percussion), the band has enchanted live audiences at Desert Daze and on tour with like-minded groups Post Animal and Psychedelic Porn Crumpets. The band's vivid sound has found them placed on popular playlists like Modern Psychedelia and the legendary superproducer's Danger Mouse Jukebox. Their 2015 debut, “Friends,” has surpassed 18 million streams. Joined by new member Kevin Perez (bass) in 2021, Levitation Room have continued to expand their colorful, unearthly sound, a process that has culminated with the vibrant new album Strange Weather. Collaborating with former Brian Jonestown Massacre keyboardist Rob Campanella, Jason Kick (Mild High Club), and Black Crowes' Joel Robinow, Levitation Room take a new step in their story and vision with Strange Weather. The record's lyrical narratives—about love in the park, life in the city, and the fact that “The world today is such an illusion”—are appropriately steeped in '60s sonics and a dreamy, lo-fi atmosphere. It's spacey, celestial guitar music for escaping into, and “it feels just like heaven.” 'Strange Weather' will be released February 16, 2024" Excerpt from https://greenwayrecords.com/artist/levitation-room/ Levitation Room: Bandcamp: https://levitationroom.bandcamp.com/album/headspace Instagram: @levitation_room Website: https://levitation-room.com Records: https://greenwayrecords.com/artist/levitation-room/ Merch: https://churchofpickle.com/collections/levitation-room The Vineyard: Instagram: @thevineyardpodcast Website: https://www.thevineyardpodcast.com Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCSn17dSz8kST_j_EH00O4MQ/videos

We've got a bit of a strange one for you on this week's Talkhouse Podcast. Back during the darkest days of the pandemic, we hosted an Instagram live chat between Wayne Coyne of the Flaming Lips and actor/musician Joe Keery, who at the time was best known as part of the cast of Stranger Things. Keery is also a musician, having released music with his band Post Animal, and he was just starting to release music under the name Djo. Keery had a pretty big viral hit with a Djo song this year: You may have heard “End Of Beginning.” If you haven't, check it out right here. Anyway, we figured that a lot of folks may have missed that conversation, so now would be the perfect time to resurface it in slightly edited podcast form. These two had never met, but they jump into a great chat about songwriting, Miley Cyrus's house—which is where Coyne was dialing in from—and lots more, including how Coyne and his Flaming Lips bandmate Steven Drozd are like french fries and salt, about how listening is equally vital in music and acting, and much more. Enjoy. 0:00 – Intro 1:40 – "This is Wayne Flaming Lip" getting himself connected 6:25 – Joe's thoughts on the Flaming Lips' live show, which Wayne thinks isn't really about the band 10:57 – Wayne asks Joe how making music is different than being directed 22:52 – "You have to listen to your own music!" 29:41 – Making music and creating art shouldn't be a sacrifice Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to Wayne Coyne and Joe Keery for time traveling from 2020 for this episode. It was produced by Myron Kaplan, and the Talkhouse theme is composed and performed by the Range. See you next time! This episode is brought to you by DistroKid. Ep. 84 | Investing in a Post-Animal Economy: Elysabeth Alfano and VegTech ETF

Business for Good Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 1, 2022 38:08

One of the most common questions I get from listeners is: how can I invest in companies you feature on the show? Well, most of them are startups backed by VC dollars, and that means the average retail investor isn't typically going to be able to invest in these early stage private companies.  But what if there were a way to invest money in an index fund that only included companies actively working to replace the exploitation of animals in our economy? It turns out that there is now such a fund, and it was co-founded by Elysabeth Alfano. Perhaps most well-known as the host of Plant-Based Business Hour, Elysabeth has now started the VegTech™ Plant-based Innovation & Climate ETF, which is traded on The New York Stock Exchange as EATV.  Think of it like the S&P 500, but instead more like the Plant-Based 40. That's because this Exchange-Traded Fund is a collection of 40 publicly-traded companies up and down the animal-free supply chain. This isn't companies that simply don't use animals, but rather companies actively involved in actually replacing animal use. That includes well-known players like Beyond Meat and Oatly, but also the ingredients companies that supply them and more. The basic bet is that over time, the inefficiency of animal use will drag down the companies that are  dependent on it, while animal-free companies will thrive.

Today's episode is produced in collaboration with Murmrr Ballroom and Community Bookstore.  Judd Apatow and David Duchovny absolutely adored their friend and collaborator Garry Shandling. Since Garry's death in 2016, Judd has been memorializing the game-changing comedian, first with his HBO documentary The Zen Diaries of Garry Shandling, and more recently through the book, It's Garry Shandling's Book, comprised of journal entries, photos, and contributions from peers. To celebrate Garry's life via the book's release late last year, Judd and David sat down at a sold-out Murmrr Ballroom to share some heartfelt and hilarious stories, and to answer audience questions.  In this very special episode, tune in for tales of boxing and meditating with Garry; on-set shenanigans; wild times at his famous Hollywood basketball games with the likes of Adam Sandler, George Clooney, and Brad Pitt; and so much more.  Subscribe now to stay in the loop on future episodes of the Talkhouse Podcast, including upcoming episodes with George Saunders and Dana Spiotta (another Murmrr Lit collaboration), the New Pornographer’s AC Newman and Post Animal, Robbie Robertson of The Band and Hiss Golden Messenger, and filmmakers Olivier Assayas and Kelly Reichardt.  —Elia Einhorn, Talkhouse Podcast host and producer  Huge thanks to Brian Kelly and all at Murmrr, and to Community Bookstore in Park Slope, Brooklyn. The two dig into the art and importance of mystery, breaking sonic boundaries, allowing themselves to take on multiple genres, and writing with a shared mind. The record was recorded in Big Sky, Montana, and while Hirschland says there was mystical behavior in the wildlife, the ghosts that haunted 2018's When I Think of You in a Castle didn't follow them. Hirshland also speaks about how house music inspired the lead single "Safe Or Not" and previews their upcoming tour with Cage the Elephant. SHOW NEWS JOE KEERY SOLISTA. This season, More Perfect is taking its camera lens off the Supreme Court and zooming in on the words of the people: the 27 amendments that We The People have made to our Constitution. We're taking on these 27 amendments both in song and in story. This episode is best listened to alongside 27: The Most Perfect Album, an entire album (an ALBUM!) and digital experience of original music and art inspired by the 27 Amendments. Think of these episodes as the audio liner notes. On first read the 16th and 22nd Amendments are at best sleepers and at worst, stinkers. In a list of Constitutional hits like the right to free speech, the right to bear arms, and birthright citizenship, the amendments covering taxes and term limits tend to fall by the wayside. But in Episode 6 of More Perfect's third season we take these forgotten gems and make them shine. The 16th Amendment sets up the income tax, sinking dread into the hearts of millions of Americans every April. But if the income tax is so hated, why did we vote to put it in the Constitution? And why do so many people willingly pay? In this episode we take on those questions and contemplate whether the 16th amendment might be less about money or law, than is about deciding what it means to belong. Next we move on to the 22nd Amendment and presidential term limits. If we as U.S. citizens are happy with our leadership, why shouldn't we be able to keep electing the same president for as many terms as we want? The ghost of George Washington comes back to give Franklin Delano Roosevelt some major side-eye as we explore the roots of the rule, and why it matters today. When you're done with the episode, check out songs by Post Animal and Pavo Pavo inspired by Amendments 16 and 22 on 27: The Most Perfect Album.

Lonely Jones — Post Animal We’re big fans of Chicago’s Post Animal, who opened for The Orwells during a weekend of local shows, features actor Joe Keery of Netflix’s “Stranger Things,” and creates cool blends of pop and psych-tinged indie rock.  Am I Wrong — Anderson Paak (feat. ScHoolboy Q) Our Chief Creative Officer Matt Reinhard is a huge fan of Anderson Paak — we think you will be too if you haven’t heard him yet!  New Song — Warpaint The ladies of Warpaint are back with an aptly titled “New Song,” and we’re pretty psyched to hear the rest of the new album.   Watcha Workin It Fa — New Breed Brass Band (feat. 5th Ward Weebie) Matt caught this great jazz-funk band playing on the street in New Orleans (where he also took this month’s playlist cover photo) and we can’t get enough.  Gimme Some Truth — John Lennon One of John Lennon’s slightly lesser-known political songs that still sounds all too familiar this election cycle.  I Know You Got Soul — Eric B. & Rakim We’re throwing it back to the late 80s with this early hip-hop classic from Eric B. & Rakim. Ladies Don’t Play Guitar — Tennis We’re excited to see indie pop-rock duo Tennis continuing to evolve their unique sound with new music.  La belle et le bad boy — Mc Solaar It wouldn’t be Whiskey & Bananas without a cool song that’s entirely en français.  Annie — Neon Indian Denton, Texas-originating Neon Indian’s catchy, danceable electronic indie pop is hard to get out of your head — but why would you want to? The Less I Know The Better — Tame Impala   Tame Impala’s excellent album “Currents” came out last summer, but we’re still jamming hard.
