They cover symptom management and improvement from a variety of angles, including evaluating improvement in functionality and mood, guidance on follow-up and dose adjustment schedules, the utility of measurement-based care, and—of most importance—how to best communicate with and support a patient while they work towards remission and recovery.Presenters:Joseph F. What is akathisia? Akathisia is a relatively common medication side effect. Akathisia is a feeling of restlessness that many people find difficult to describe. Many people with akathisia say that it makes them feel like they would like to crawl out of their skin.   What does akathisia feel like? Akathisia can be just an uncomfortable feeling. But for many people that feeling of restlessness translates into not being able to sit still. (Akathisia comes from Greek words that mean “not able to sit down”). It can involve fidgeting, or not being able to sit down or lie down for very long without having to move. Akathisia can manifest as walking or pacing as well.   What causes akathisia? Akathisia is sometimes a symptom of neurological illnesses (like Parkinson's disease), but most of the time akathisia is a medication side effect. Medications used to treat psychosis or schizophrenia are the most common cause of akathisia. But antidepressants can cause akathisia. So can some treatments for nausea or vomiting.   Akathisia treatment   Akathisia is relatively easy to treat. The most common treatments for akathisia are: reducing the dose of the medication that's causing it, or getting rid of the medication and switching to a different one. The most common medication treatments for akathisia are propranolol or lorazepam. Other treatment options that have been studied include: cyproheptadine, vitamin B6, benztropine (Cogentin), or diphenhydramine (Benadryl).   In this week's episode, Melissa and Dr. Erik answer questions like: What is akathisia? What causes akathisia? She is currently Chief of Geriatrics at the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine, where she directs AgingME: Maine’s Geriatrics Workforce Enhancement Program (GWEP) and the new TeleHealthy program.    “Once you get on an anti-psychotic, there is a fear among the caregiver, either staff or family members, that the behavior is going to come back if you stop the drug,” Susan explains. “People never want to take people off of medications, and that is why the regulators have said, ‘Sorry, you have to.’ There is a required gradual dose reduction. It's always anxiety provoking, so it's kind of better never to start if you don't have to because stopping is equally challenging.”   “I would like to have your audience understand something else really important about anti-psychotics and that is their side effects. I think doctors, nurses, and others often miss a very specific side effect of anti-psychotics called Akathisia,” Susan says. “If they think that their loved one might be experiencing Akathisia and are on an anti-psychotic, they should speak with their doctor.”   Akathisia is a movement disorder characterized by a subjective feeling of inner restlessness accompanied by mental distress and an inability to sit still.     Don't forget to subscribe, download, and review to share your thoughts about the show!   To find out more about Bobbi and Mike or the inspiration behind this podcast, Rodger That, head over to rodgerthat.show.

This week on the Mad in America podcast we turn our attention to prescription-drug-induced akathisia and joining me to discuss this is Jill Nickens. Jill is the president and founder of the Akathisia Alliance for Education and Research, a nonprofit organization formed by people who have personal experience of akathisia. The group includes biochemists, psychologists, nurses, attorneys, business owners, and others who have survived akathisia, suicidality and devastating personal losses due, in part, to a lack of awareness by medical professionals. They have come together to inform and raise awareness to help minimize the risk of developing akathisia. Akathisia is an extremely distressing neurological disorder that causes severe agitation, an inability to remain still and an overwhelming sense of terror. It is primarily caused by prescribed medications and the most common offenders are anti-psychotics, antidepressants, anti-nausea medications and antibiotics.

That day ten years ago started much as any other and Wendy Dolin had no idea that when her husband Stewart went off to work that day he would never return home again.  The tragedy that befell her husband and family that day took Wendy on a journey through the world of drug trials, ground-breaking litigation and world-wide advocacy to found MISSD (The Medication-Induced Suicide Prevention and Education Foundation in Memory of Stewart Dolin), dedicated to creating awareness around akathisia and helping us to be educated consumers of prescription and over the counter drugs. What is akathisia?   Akathisia is a disorder induced as a side effect of medications (including, but not limited to, SSRI's and antipsychotics), which can cause a person such intense inner restlessness that the sufferer is driven to violence and/or suicide.  There are many permutations of akathisia but the number one thing to take away from this episode?  Anytime you start, stop or change the dosage of a medication, BE AWARE!  This is when you are most vulnerable for akathisia or other negative effects of medication.  MISSD is not anti-medication but is pro-information so be sure to listen and be informed today! Welcome to the Mikhaila Peterson Podcast, episode 9. This is a brief podcast with my dad Jordan Peterson about what happened to him and my family in the last year. The following are links that may help elucidate some of the topics we discussed in this episode: Paradoxical reaction to benzodiazepines – a condition dad was diagnosed with https://www.acep.org/how-we-serve/sections/toxicology/news/july-2017/paradoxical-reactions-to-benzodiazepines-who-gets-them-and-why/ - Akathisia - something dad really really really suffered from - https://w-bad.org/akathisia/ - “Many medical professionals don’t recognize akathisia or that it’s a drug-induced state. Instead, they write off the symptoms as a “worsening of mental illness” or other condition. Sometimes they even raise the dose of the offending drug and when the patient’s condition worsens as a result, they may prescribe more medication which can sometimes further exacerbate the problem or that fail to offer relief. This week on MIA Radio, we interview Wendy Dolin founder of the MISSD foundation. MISSD stands for Medication-Induced Suicide Prevention and Education Foundation in Memory of Stewart Dolin. In 2010, Wendy’s husband Stewart Dolin was prescribed Paxil (paroxetine), a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor ("SSRI") for mild situational anxiety. Within days, Stewart's anxiety became worse. He felt restless and had trouble sleeping. On July 15, 2010, just six days after beginning the medication, following a regular lunch with a business associate, Stewart left his office and walked to a nearby train station, despite not being a regular commuter. A registered nurse who was also on the platform later reported seeing Stewart pacing back and forth and looking very agitated. As a train approached, Stewart ended his life. Founded in 2011, MISSD is a unique non-profit organization dedicated to honoring the memory of Stewart and others by raising awareness and educating the public about the dangers of akathisia. MISSD aims to ensure that people suffering from akathisia's symptoms are accurately diagnosed so that needless deaths are prevented.
