Our guest today is Reporters' Roundtable regular and Political Correspondent for19th news, Amanda Becker. Her book "You Must Stand Up: The Fight for Abortion Rights in Post Dobbs America" provides valuable insights into the battle for abortion rights. It was published today. She and Bill discuss the book and the overturning of Roe V Wade and its impact on the 2024 election although the 2024 election is expected to be decided mostly on personalities rather than policy. However, one of the central issues that may come into play is reproductive rights. Kamala Harris is a longtime leader and supporter of abortion rights, while Donald Trump, a former abortion rights supporter, is now the country's anti-abortion leader. Each of the 50 states is trying to navigate the post-Dobbs reality, which has resulted in chaos. The issue of abortion rights is gaining importance among voters, particularly women under 45. The impact of abortion rights on voter turnout and candidate races remains to be seen. It is expected that Trump will try to avoid giving a clear answer on his stance on abortion, while Harris will likely keep the conversation focused on this issue. Host Brian Stelter is joined by Amanda Becker, Washington correspondent for The 19th, to examine the battle over abortion rights in America, including the Florida ballot measure, former President Trump's all-over-the-place messaging, and the Republican Party's conflicting views about in vitro fertilization and fetal personhood. The two also discuss the origins of abortion politics and how it's impossible to disentangle abortion bans from the history of patriarchy in this country. Becker is the author of the forthcoming book, You Must Stand Up: The Fight for Abortion Rights in Post-Dobbs America, and tells Stelter that it doesn't matter if you aren't in Alabama–an abortion ban there or anywhere can impact you because of the legal pathway in which cases get decided.

The redacted Mueller report is out and if you think it was a total exoneration, you aren't paying attention. Trump and his cronies have been downplaying and lying about the report for years. We've now seen it and, while he didn't directly break any laws, Mueller was clear: Congress has plenty of evidence to bring collusion and obstruction charges against Trump. It looks like 2020 is the best option to get Trump out of office. We talk to The Guardian's Lauren Gambino, Amanda Becker from Reuters and Rebecca Buckwalter-Poza from Prism!
Michael Cohen is coming to Congress and all reports say that he is going to turn on Donald Trump and spill everything he knows about Trump's crimes. It could be devastating to Trump, but only if Republicans care enough to do something about it. This will all take place at the same time that Trump is meeting with Kim Jong Un in Hanoi. It will be interesting to see how he handles the potentially devastating news from Cohen. We talk to Amanda Becker from Reuters, Adele Stan from Right Wing Watch and Nikki Schwab from NY Post!
President Trump addressed the nation from the Oval Office to persuade Americans on the need for a border wall to address the humanitarian crisis there. He struck a more measured tone using a more emotional appeal rather than trying to use too many facts and figures. The democratic response on the other hand accused the president of using the oval office to manufacture a crisis. Amanda Becker, correspondent for Reuters, joins us to discuss the effectiveness of the address and if it moves the needle at all? Next, storied retailer Sears could be on its way to being done for good. After filing for bankruptcy last October, negotiations have continued to see what can be done to keep the company afloat. Zlati Meyer, Money reporter for USA Today, joins us for what may be the final days for Sears, and the biggest problem, while many feel nostalgic about the company, no one is shopping there. Finally, a follow up to a mysterious story that started in 2016. US and Canadian diplomats in Cuba had complained of bizarre symptoms after hearing strange noises, prompting speculation about potential sonic weapons. The AP obtained audio of the purported sonic attack and now we know what the sound was. Hilary Brueck, science reporter for Business Insider, joins us for what was in the audio… the calling song of the Indies short-tailed cricket. Before the holiday break, it looked like there may not be a government shutdown. Well, we're about a week and a half into a shutdown with no real end in sight. Can Democrats hold strong? Will Trump cave and let his base down? He's already let them down when he promised Mexico would pay for it, but will they care?Plus, 2020 us heating up! Elizabeth Warren is IN. Who is next?We talk to Abby Livingston from the Texas Tribune, Nikki Schwab from the NY Post and Amanda Becker from Thomson Reuters
