TERRY REID ‘SUPERLUNGS' THE LEGENDARY SINGER WHO TURNED DOWN LED ZEPPELIN AND DEEP PURPLE: A SPECIAL EVENT ON INTERVIEWING THE LEGENDS Hello everyone and welcome to another edition of Interviewing the Legends I'm your host Ray Shasho. Terry Reid, ‘Superlungs' as he's affectionately known, is without doubt one of the greatest rock/soul voices ever produced or is indeed likely to. A Terry Reid concert should be a cherished memory for any self-respecting fan of the greats of British music. Terry turned down the front man's job with Led Zeppelin, recommending his mate Robert Plant instead, a similar offer and rebuff to Deep Purple. Aretha Franklin's stated that The Beatles, Rolling Stones and Terry Reid were the best England had to offer in 1968. He underwent two World Tours with The Rolling Stones, US tours with Cream, UK tours with Jethro Tull and Fleetwood Mac, The Isle of White Festival in 1969 and Glastonbury in 1970, played at Mick Jagger's wedding, before soured record deals resulted in Terry leaving Britain for America nearly 40 years ago. All true, but the full story includes numerous collaborations with Graham Nash, covers of Reid songs by Marianne Faithfull, The Hollies, The Raconteurs (the hugely popular ‘Rich Kid Blues'), film soundtracks, including a song in George Clooney's  film ‘Up In The Air', and a catalogue of 6 studio albums, including the seminal album ‘The River', re-released to critical acclaim in 2002 and the 1976 Nash produced ‘Seed of Memory'. A Reid song ‘Horses Through a Rainstorm' also features on CSN's box set. Terry's most recent release is entitled ‘The Other Side of the River' and released an incredible live album entitled ‘Terry Reid Live in London.' PLEASE WELCOME LEGENDARY SINGER SONGWRITER AND MUSICIAN OFTEN REFERRED TO AS SUPERLUNGS…TERRY REID TO INTERVIEWING THE LEGENDS … PURCHASE  THE LATEST RELEASE BY TERRY REID The Other Side of the River A double LP housed in a Stoughton gatefold "tip-on" jacket. Remastered from the original analog tapes. Track notes by Terry Reid. 6 never heard Reid compositions, plus 5 very different alternate takes - all previously unreleased. British musician Terry Reid is a relatively unsung legend. With his incredible voice (that earned him the nickname "Superlungs"), spot-on songwriting, and underrated guitar skills, Reid invented new sounds and others followed suit. His 1973 LP, River, is an under-the-radar but deeply loved album. Our special new release, The Other Side Of The River, features all previously unreleased material from the River sessions, including six never-before-heard Reid compositions and five very different alternate takes of tracks from River. Over the decades, as River went in and out of print, there were rumors of a mythological double album's worth of unreleased material. The rumors turned out to be true, as the entire album was recorded twice: once with British producer Eddy Offord and again with the legendary Tom Dowd. The sessions captured Reid's free-associative mix of folk, blues, rock, jazz, bossa-nova, soul, and samba, recalling at times Tim Buckley and Van Morrison, while featuring some remarkable guests including Gilberto Gil on percussion, Ike & Tina Turner's Ikettes on vocals, and David Lindley, of psych band Kaleidoscope, on violin. The Other Side Of The River includes songs that even Terry had forgotten - rockers in the style of the River track "Dean," Latin grooves with percussionist Willie Bobo, and beautifully sparse vocal material not unlike David Crosby's If Only I Could Remember My Name and John Martyn's Solid Air. available at amazon.com ALSO TERRY REID LIVE IN LONDON Terry Reid returns annually to London to play a residency at the legendary Ronnie Scott's club. Putting together a cracking band, Terry has performed two hours plus sets that have delighted his audiences, and Terry, who says of Ronnie's: The room has a special quality that allows me to talk to you as if you were in my own front room, where one conversation leads into another. That, I suppose, is how I end up playing for over two hours. I must be honest when I say I treasure those moments I spent with you and the kindness you show me. Live In London is the fourteen-track result from one of these performances. Terry and his band perform these songs, spread over two CDs. They capture Terry (nicknamed Super Lungs) as he takes a journey through an emotional landscape that starts with The Frame and passes along the way Rain In The Red Lights, his best known song River, a version of Brian Wilson's Don't Worry Baby and culminates in a two song finish, Seed of Memory and Don't Know Why. Live In London captures a unique performer and his band as they deliver a set of songs that allow them to stretch out and improvise or keep to tight arrangements all the while performing at the tops of their game. Though a contemporary recording, this album harks back to an earlier time when performers had a freer rein on their talents and Terry an amazing singer and raconteur takes full advantage of the space that his rapt audience and the intimate atmosphere generated at Ronnie's grants him. available at amazon.com   FOR MORE INFORMATION ABOUT TERRY REID VISIT https://www.terryreid.com/ Official website https://www.facebook.com/p/Terry-Reid-100047699059130/ Facebook https://twitter.com/terryreid?lang=en Twitter https://www.instagram.com/superlungsterry/?hl=en Instagram https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCNKLYpDqBnk8mVJT8GRq1UA YouTube https://open.spotify.com/artist/12fRdeKejG8BBzybGf0ygk Spotify   UPCOMING SHOWS Fri 3 May 2024: Tuckerton, NJ - Lizzie Rose Music Room Sun 5 May 2024: Media, PA - Media Theater Thu 9 May 2024: NEW YORK, NEW YORK  - PRIVATE PARTY Fri 10 May 2024: New York - The Cutting Room Sat 11 May 2024: N Y, N Y - THE TURNING POINT   TERRY REID Discography Studio albums Bang, Bang You're Terry Reid (1968) Terry Reid (1969) (US title: Move Over for Terry Reid) River (1973) Seed of Memory (1976) Rogue Waves (1979) The Driver (1991) The Other Side of the River (2016) Compilations Super Lungs: The Complete Studio EMI Recordings 1966–1969 (2004) The Most of Terry Reid (1969) MFP5220 Live albums The Hand Don't Fit the Glove (1985) Alive (2004) Silver White Light – Live at the Isle of Wight 1970 (2004) Live in London (2013)   Support us on PayPal!

Painist/composer Herbie Hancock: "Inventions and Dimensions"

Tonight's Jazz Feature is the third album in young Herbie Hancock's Blue Note Records era. All of his Blue Note albums are "classics" but this one is lesser known but an important document. It was supposed to be a straight forward piano trio album with Herbie playing well known standards, plus a couple of originals and a couple of 12 bar blues. Herbie had something very different in mind and created some tunes that left open a lot of room for improvisation. They all had interesting properties and enhanced by a solid rhythm section made up of Paul Chambers on bass, Willie Bobo (aka William Correa) on drums and Oswaldo "Chihuahua" Martinez on added percussion. The five Hancock compositions explore a variety of moods and leave a lot of space for exploration. It is a unique document and a credit to Hancock's adventuresome musical spirit. "Inventions and Dimensions" was the album title and in honor of Herbie Hancock's 83rd Birthday on April 12, 2023 we feature his amazing music.

Terry Reid in conversation with David Eastaugh  Reid came to the attention of producer Mickie Most, who became his manager and who was in partnership with Peter Grant at the time. His first single with Most, "Better By Far", became a radio favourite, but the album Reid was signed by Ahmet Ertegun to Atlantic Records with his band of David Lindley, Lee Miles and Alan White; they began recording in the UK and later switched to the US. White left to join Yes and Lindley left to tour with Jackson Browne. However, Lee Miles remained and was Reid's trusty sidekick for many years to come. Other musicians on the album, titled River, included Conrad Isodore on drums and Willie Bobo on percussion. Produced by Reid, engineered by Tom Dowd, and mixed by Eddie Offord this third album was released in 1973 and received favourable reviews

Jake, you got me going into a deep recall. I first met Henry Franklin when he was with Willie Bobo and I was with Mongo Santamaria. Art moves in a strange kind of way. We're in another kind of reality today as far as the art is concerned. There's something else that's kind of in front of everything and is kind of futuristic - electronics, lasers and bright lights and all that kind of stuff. There's art in there as well, but I'm not necessarily seeing the imagination and the creativity that was in the arts or that's in the arts. The music we're speaking of I call “spontaneous improvisation.” The word “jazz” is associated with a time period, but it doesn't necessarily speak to the mind set of the individuals, and the people, and the theme of what the music that is associated with jazz. The music I am interested in is spontaneous improvisational music, with a theme. Free with order as opposed to just flying all over the place. One of the phenomenon's out there in this existence, in all of this chaos is that there absolutely appears to be some order. Since man has been asking (we're still asking), we're still trying to figure out, what is that? What is this order? “Alphie what is it all about?” I think if the mind continues to embrace it, it (this music) will survive. The creativity is probably the essence and that will continue in spite of. It may get a smaller audience, but I don't think that will have any impact on the creativity of it all because art kind of works in a strange kind of way

This week on the podcast I am honored to have percussionist Eric Bobo on the podcast. Before he became known as a member of Cypress Hill, and before he performed with the Beastie Boys, we chat about how he took over as director of his late father’s Latin jazz band. Legendary percussionist Willie Bobo, who played alongside iconic artists like Tito Puente (with whom he received mentorship from) and Carlos Santana, might be best known for his contributions to the Latin Jazz genre, but he was also one of the most influential musicians to the early years of hip-hop. It's an all encompassing discussion that leads up to the new body of work 'Empires' with Stu Bangas, which is out now! Entertainers need to be aware of what's happening all around them. The great entertainers are aware of all the best that's around them. The best education, the best food and of coarse the best music. The kind of music that comes from your soul- or maybe even deeper. Jimmy Smith laying on his B-3 or Willie Bobo playing congas in in Spanish Harlem. Monk Montgomery extending a hand while Big Black played the African room. My guest today is a great entertainer. He is a comic, a purveyor of Social Issues and a doctor. Hid education @ Amherst helped galvanize the classic childrens program the Electric Company and also prompted the little Bill series that my daughter is holding as she sits next to me. From the streets of Philadelphia to the house that Jello built my guest never wavered in his love of music and the musicians. He danced to it. He sang to it. He played keyboards, he played the drums like Max Roach.... my guest was Badfoot Brown. Today we see a weakening of the nuclear family and a culture that seems to use people and love things. it's far different from the community that had a major influence on this entertainers life. Bill Cosby its an honor to have you on the Jake Feinberg Show Intimacy, Humanity, Accessibility and Music. At this point my greatest journalistic accomplishment. Where have I known you before. The shadow of doubt that creeps into everyone's psyche as they journey through life. Some check out early, some stay late some exercise the power of the drum to create melodic invention and a style of communication that is a talk with the spirits sight unseen or heard. The essence of real music is shared creative communication. Striving to make everyone sound better doing your part to enhance to group sound. In this day in age the current brotherhood focuses more on the individual as opposed to the group. Look at me and my technique. The monsters chops not realizing that the more intellectual you get the more the music suffers. My guest today has kept his sanity and clairvoyance by swinging the band. The same way Gene Krupa and Joe Morello and Philly Joe Jones and Willie Bobo did. He is a master of holding it down, even when Mel Martin or Joe Henderson begin to take off he prevents them from fully connecting with eternity. For he understands that music is a communal event and its essence should marinate within all. He's a master of all trades, from country grass to Dixie Swing, modal black classical music to Afro Cuban salsa. From Red Clay to Return to Forever to AZTECA to black stone Legacy my guest is a fearless performer who like Louis Hayes knows if he doesn't bring it - then there's no urgency -and if there's No urgency then there's no pulse. No worries says my guest. He still has a lot to say under a Havana moon or a blizzard in Brooklyn. In 1996 I was fiercely committed to East Coast Hip Hop and discovering the breaks used to create it. I had a friend who worked at a local music shop at a strip mall perpendicular to my job, and during my scheduled break I would visit, kick the Willie BoBo and in turn be laced with whatever I could carry out. I remember one evening, while staging the purchasing of a large amount of Hip Hop and Breaks, seeing a white cardboard display at the checkout for an artist I’d never heard of with unique, attractive packaging and a really cheap price point, like .99 or so. I picked up the CD single, mulled over adding it to the pile, decided I would never have the opportunity to listen to it with the large amount of music I was amassing and set it down. Months later when Urban Hang Suite was released, I realized the error of my decision. UHS signaled not only the introduction of Maxwell, it was also a harbinger of the Neo Soul Movement. In addition, the Ascension maxi-single I passed up, ironically included a remix by Hip Hop’s most respected producer, Dilla. Over the next 2 years, Maxwell continued to drop maxi singles from UHS with alternate versions and remixes of its beloved tunes much like the Hip Hop 12”s of that time. As time went on and I became immersed in music overall I discovered there were others touched by Maxwell’s music who decided to share their spin on his music. It’s a combination of these remixes, covers, and edits I have mixed and share with you today. Enjoy! --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/bamalovesoul-radio/support

El álbum se titula Bobo! Do That Thing / Guajira. Do That Thing del gran Willie Bobo en La Hora Faniática.

S. Duncan Reid has written a meticulously researched and detailed account of the performances and recording career of Bay Area-raised and small group Latin-jazz innovator and vibraphonist Cal Tjader. Tjader’s high-energy yet lyrical and melodic playing introduced new demographics of jazz listeners to the soulful sound of Latin jazz for four decades beginning in the 1940s and ending with Tjader’s untimely death at the age of 56 in 1982. In Cal Tjader: The Life and Recordings of the Man Who Revolutionized Latin Jazz (McFarland, 2013), Reid details Tjader’s uncanny ability to soak up ever-evolving stylistic and percussive nuances – and discusses his collaborations with and influences on other Latin jazz innovators such as Mongo Santamaria, Willie Bobo, Poncho Sanchez, Vince Guaraldi, Michael Wolff and many, many more. Reid recounts how Mario Bauza, Machito, Tito Puente, Dizzy Gillespie, and Stan Kenton, among others, had influenced the Latin jazz scene in the 1940s with their exciting big band/orchestral sound – and that the majority of influential jazz critics were “East of the Mississippi.” One of the delights in Reid’s book is to see how Tjader, with his San Francisco Bay Area roots and a European family background, nonetheless was attracted to and became an innovator in the small-group Latin jazz scene. Cal Tjader was literally born to rhythm. His father, of Swedish descent, was a talented vaudevillian. His Idaho-born mother played classical piano. Tjader’s parents opened a popular dance studio in San Mateo, California in the late 1920s. Tjader was already tap dancing in front of audiences by the age of 4 and as a child even danced with tap dance legend Bill “Bojangles” Robinson on a Hollywood set in the early 1930s. Forsaking tap dancing in high school, Tjader picked up drums and within three years won a Gene Krupa drum contest playing “Drum Boogie.” News of his success, however, was “overshadowed” by another news event –the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. After serving in the South Pacific in WWII, Tjader returned to the San Francisco Bay area, attended San Francisco State College and soon began collaborating with other West Coast jazz musicians – most notably Dave Brubeck (Tjader started out as a drummer for Brubeck in the late 1940s and subsequently the vibes), and sax player Paul Desmond. It wasn’t long, however, before Tjader became enamored of the infectious and complex percussive permutations in Afro-Cuban rhythms after meeting Cuban percussionist Armando Peraza in San Francisco early in 1950. Reid also writes that Tjader’s collaborations/recordings with classically trained jazz pianist George Shearing were central to Tjader’s own evolution in the small-group Latin sound. Shearing called Tjader a “percussive genius.” Tjader always had a lyrical quality to his playing – he left space and was always looking for new compositional challenges, and it wasn’t long before Tjader became a fixture in the small-group Latin jazz scene in San Francisco, playing gigs at the most famous San Francisco clubs of the day – notably The Blackhawk, The Great American Music Hall, and the El Matador. Tjader is probably most associated with his catchy cover of the Gillespie/Pozo hit Guarachi Guaro on his Grammy-nominated album Soul Sauce in 1964. Tjader later won a Grammy for his album La Onda Va Bien, recorded in 1979. Reid is upfront about Tjader’s problems with alcohol and challenging family dynamics but doesn’t psychologize – he lets his interviewees do the talking. Learn more about your ad choices.
