Engage to support our work.Devin: What is your superpower?Zufi: My superpowers are to bring people together and get them to be passionate or show their passion for a cause they truly believe in.Gen Z is a generation characterized by its desire for meaningful engagement and activism. In today's episode of Superpowers for Good, Zufi Deo, co-founder of BizGees Ltd, shares how his social enterprise harnesses that passion to support post-conflict communities through a project called Arts for Refugees. The program collaborates closely with Gen Z, integrating their talents and perspectives into storytelling that shines a light on the lives and challenges faced by refugees. Zufi explained, “We work with 250 plus Gen Z. They create user-generated content for us, and then we share that publicly. So it's for Gen Z, by Gen Z, with Gen Z.”What makes Arts for Refugees unique is its multidimensional approach. Participants aren't just creating content; they are directly connected with the subject matter through hands-on learning experiences. “Tomorrow morning, for example, I'm onboarding 17 students from King's College, London, War Studies Department. They'll be trained as student journalists to write articles on post-conflict topics,” Zufi shared. These articles are often recorded as podcasts, offering a personal touch that highlights the deep connections these young writers have with their topics, especially for those with refugee backgrounds themselves. The initiative's work goes beyond raising awareness—it informs policymakers and influences strategic frameworks. For instance, BizGees shared insights with the Boston Consulting Group for a UNHCR report, showing the program's real-world impact.BizGees, a hybrid social enterprise, demonstrates how for-profit strategies can be leveraged to create sustainable social change, tapping into capitalism to fuel global impact. As Zufi put it, “We use a for-profit mechanism to achieve [social value]. That allows us to tap into the resources of capitalism... to meet everyone's needs economically, but also emotionally and socially.”Zufi's insights remind us of the power of peer-to-peer connection and the role young people play in reshaping narratives around refugees.tl;dr:* Empowering Gen Z for Social Impact: In this episode, Zufi Deo discusses how BizGees engages Gen Z to create user-generated content that raises awareness about post-conflict communities, fostering a unique "by Gen Z, for Gen Z" model of social involvement.* Building Passionate Communities: Zufi's superpower lies in his ability to unite people and inspire them to act on causes they believe in. He recounted organizing business mentorships in London to support thousands of entrepreneurs, highlighting the power of collective passion.* Human-Centric Engagement: A central theme in today's conversation was the emphasis on treating people as human beings, not numbers. Zufi shared that this approach, though more time-consuming and costly, leads to deeper connections and more impactful results.* Personal Stories to Drive Connection: The episode featured moving examples of individuals who, through Arts for Refugees, not only gained support but contributed their experiences to educate and inform others, illustrating the profound peer-to-peer learning model in action.* Social Enterprise for Sustainable Change: BizGees, described as a hybrid social enterprise, showcases how for-profit structures can be leveraged to support meaningful social outcomes, combining the resources of capitalism with a mission to foster global awareness and empathy. How to Develop Inspiring Collective Action As a SuperpowerZufi's superpower lies in his remarkable ability to bring people together and ignite their passion for causes that matter. This talent has allowed him to lead impactful initiatives and support individuals and groups toward achieving meaningful goals. In today's episode, Zufi highlighted how he discovered his superpower during his time in London, where he supported over 2,000 entrepreneurs over a decade by organizing teams of business mentors to guide them. He described how fostering an environment where people felt connected to a purpose and to each other was at the core of his work.An illustrative story that exemplifies Zufi's superpower involved a well-connected but struggling entrepreneur who had organized a group for women but couldn't find mentors. Zufi recounted, “She literally came to tears because she did not know what to do or where to go.” He and his team stepped in, mentoring the group monthly and teaching them how to find support, ultimately empowering them to take ownership and thrive.Zufi's approach for developing this superpower includes actionable tips:* See individuals as human beings with inherent value, not just numbers or names.* Dedicate time and resources to foster genuine, person-to-person connections.* Build small, manageable groups for better interaction and deeper engagement.* Embed empathy and respect in every interaction, even if it requires more time and effort.By following Zufi Deo's example and advice, you can make inspiring collective passion a skill. With practice and effort, you could make it a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world.Remember, however, that research into success suggests that building on your own superpowers is more important than creating new ones or overcoming weaknesses. A new film from the West African nation of Ivory Coast presents an intriguing allegory about power and its misuse. Night of the Kings, the second narrative feature of Ivorian director Philippe Lacôte attracted critical notice, and won the Amplify Voices award for films from smaller countries at the Toronto Film Festival. A huge prison in the middle of the rain forest has been abandoned by the state—the warden and his staff oversee the convicts from a sealed room, while the penitentiary is run by the inmates, a hell on earth in which only the strong and the cunning can survive. This society in miniature has developed its own political traditions. One inmate rules them all, but if he becomes unwell, the rules say he must take his own life. The current ruler is a burly old man nicknamed Blackbeard and played by Steve Tientcheu. Blackbeard is clearly ailing—he has an oxygen tank to help him breathe—and he knows there are adversaries trying to take him down. When he notices a new young inmate, played by Bakari Koné, being admitted to the prison, he decides to use him in a bid to gain time. An old prison tradition says that during a period when the moon turns red, the ruler can declare a man “Roman,” or storyteller. The Roman must tell the gathered prisoners tales all night, or face death, and in the meantime Blackbeard will take steps to undo his enemies. If you didn't realize that we were in the realm of myth before this, you will now with this fanciful but evocative narrative ploy. Immediately one thinks of the Arabian nights, and the framing story of Scheherazade, who must keep telling stories or face being executed by her tyrannical monarch of a husband. As it happens, the moon appears red after a spectacular sunset, and the new Roman is called upon to start his tale. He says he doesn't know how to tell stories, but when the inmates are all gathered, he nervously starts talking anyway. He tells of Zama King, a recently killed crime lord in the slums of the capital, a person everyone has heard of and whom he claims to have known. But realizing that he must talk all night, he invents a complex origin story in which Zama King was born and raised in a previous century, as a child in the pre-colonial era when a powerful queen ruled the land. Roman must stretch the story until daybreak, after which he will be safe from being killed. The story expands to include multiple meanings, not least of which concerns the trauma of the recent five year civil war, which audiences in Ivory Coast would remember, but not foreign viewers. Never mind, the metaphor is relevant to all people suffering from the aftermath of war, and to all suffering under autocratic regimes like the one in the prison. In Night of the Kings, the modern and the mythic are one, reflecting the universal stories of power and corruption that plague mankind. The film is also a tribute to the tradition of the west African griot, the storyteller, poet, and musician who passes on the myth, history, and traditions of the people. As Roman speaks, he is often accompanied by the songs, pantomimes and dances of other prisoners. And the film takes us away momentarily from the prison, as we are shown scenes from the drama of Zama King. As the dawn approaches, and Blackbeard's enemies gird for the final struggle, Night of the Kings takes on the nature of legend, a national epic played out in the world of society's most powerless members. This astonishing film confronts us with the fearful consequences of a society ruled by brute force instead of love.

Her father was one of the best high school football coaches in the state and her mother was a nationally published best selling author. With both parents in the picture, they laid the foundation for who Payton would soon become. Payton got her start as a music producer, selling her first best at the age of 11. She taught herself the piano and guitar, and was trained on the saxophone. She eventually got into DJing and by 13, she had a fully-fledged DJing business. Although Payton loved music, she also loved playing sports. She played three sports- basketball, track, and golf up until her senior year of high school. In May of 2020, Payton took a chance and started sending the music reviews she enjoyed writing off to different publications. She was told no at least a dozen times, but there was one publication that believed in her, HypeOffLife. She wrote over there for a while and eventually began conducting interviews. At the age of only 16, she became a published journalist and interviewed a GRAMMY-nominated artist. Payton continued sending her work off to other publications and eventually caught the eye of REVOLT. They loved the work she'd been doing for HypeOffLife and wanted her to pen a few articles for them. This was the start of an extremely lucrative relationship between her and REVOLT. One of the first articles she wrote for them ended up going viral on LinkedIn, and caught the eye of Essence, BET, Power105.1, and Amplify Voices to name a few. This episode features Sean Goode, an expert with youth empowerment. He is one of our newest hosts produced by Amplify Voices for a podcast called Possibilities Over Problems. This unique podcast will speak to educators, parents and young people on how to bring out the very best in their relationship. This triad spends the most critical years of a young person's life. Sean is bringing that important relationship to light with laughter, tears and life enhancing lessons. www.AmplifyVoices.io About our guest: Sean Goode is the executive director of Choose 180, and the definition of an intentional leader. Both of his parents struggled with mental health issues, and his brother was sent to prison when Sean was only six. Along with dealing with those issues, he struggled with a lack of stability as he moved to twelve different places during twelve years of school. Despite all of those struggles, Sean was able to break the stereotype and dedicate himself to being everything others thought he couldn't. Today, Sean transforms the lives of kids by steering them clear of the traditional school-to-prison pipeline. He provides them with a sense of community rather than shame and imprisonment. Outside of his work, Sean's a family man at heart. He has a wife who he considers his best friend and children of his own that he's raising.

He's the first Black leader to serve on the company's management committee and a dedicated advocate for equity and inclusion; he envisions a world where diversity officers will no longer be necessary. In the meantime, he brings his whole self to the job, and has helped dramatically increase U.S. Bank's investments in opportunities for all -- both within the company and in communities of color across the country. In early 2021, the company announced U.S. Bank Access Commitment, a large-scale effort to help shrink the racial wealth gap through targeted investments in, for example, Black entrepreneurs and microbusinesses owned by women of color. Greg also serves on the Board of Directors of the United Negro College Fund, a nonprofit organization that provides scholarships to over 10,000 students a year and supports historically Black Colleges and Universities. He is a member of the CNBC Workforce Executive Council and speaks often and eloquently about what inclusion really means, offering his expertise to a wide range of media outlets and organizations. “We win when we all win,” he says.
