In today's episode of Superpowers for Good, Zufi Deo, co-founder of BizGees Ltd, shares how his social enterprise harnesses that passion to support post-conflict communities through a project called Arts for Refugees. The program collaborates closely with Gen Z, integrating their talents and perspectives into storytelling that shines a light on the lives and challenges faced by refugees. Zufi explained, “We work with 250 plus Gen Z. They create user-generated content for us, and then we share that publicly. So it's for Gen Z, by Gen Z, with Gen Z.”What makes Arts for Refugees unique is its multidimensional approach. Participants aren't just creating content; they are directly connected with the subject matter through hands-on learning experiences. “Tomorrow morning, for example, I'm onboarding 17 students from King's College, London, War Studies Department. They'll be trained as student journalists to write articles on post-conflict topics,” Zufi shared. These articles are often recorded as podcasts, offering a personal touch that highlights the deep connections these young writers have with their topics, especially for those with refugee backgrounds themselves. The initiative's work goes beyond raising awareness—it informs policymakers and influences strategic frameworks. For instance, BizGees shared insights with the Boston Consulting Group for a UNHCR report, showing the program's real-world impact.BizGees, a hybrid social enterprise, demonstrates how for-profit strategies can be leveraged to create sustainable social change, tapping into capitalism to fuel global impact. As Zufi put it, “We use a for-profit mechanism to achieve [social value]. That allows us to tap into the resources of capitalism... to meet everyone's needs economically, but also emotionally and socially.”Zufi's insights remind us of the power of peer-to-peer connection and the role young people play in reshaping narratives around refugees.tl;dr:* Empowering Gen Z for Social Impact: In this episode, Zufi Deo discusses how BizGees engages Gen Z to create user-generated content that raises awareness about post-conflict communities, fostering a unique "by Gen Z, for Gen Z" model of social involvement.* Building Passionate Communities: Zufi's superpower lies in his ability to unite people and inspire them to act on causes they believe in. He recounted organizing business mentorships in London to support thousands of entrepreneurs, highlighting the power of collective passion.* Human-Centric Engagement: A central theme in today's conversation was the emphasis on treating people as human beings, not numbers. Zufi shared that this approach, though more time-consuming and costly, leads to deeper connections and more impactful results.* Personal Stories to Drive Connection: The episode featured moving examples of individuals who, through Arts for Refugees, not only gained support but contributed their experiences to educate and inform others, illustrating the profound peer-to-peer learning model in action.* Social Enterprise for Sustainable Change: BizGees, described as a hybrid social enterprise, showcases how for-profit structures can be leveraged to support meaningful social outcomes, combining the resources of capitalism with a mission to foster global awareness and empathy. How to Develop Inspiring Collective Action As a SuperpowerZufi's superpower lies in his remarkable ability to bring people together and ignite their passion for causes that matter. This talent has allowed him to lead impactful initiatives and support individuals and groups toward achieving meaningful goals. In today's episode, Zufi highlighted how he discovered his superpower during his time in London, where he supported over 2,000 entrepreneurs over a decade by organizing teams of business mentors to guide them. He described how fostering an environment where people felt connected to a purpose and to each other was at the core of his work.An illustrative story that exemplifies Zufi's superpower involved a well-connected but struggling entrepreneur who had organized a group for women but couldn't find mentors. Zufi recounted, “She literally came to tears because she did not know what to do or where to go.” He and his team stepped in, mentoring the group monthly and teaching them how to find support, ultimately empowering them to take ownership and thrive.Zufi's approach for developing this superpower includes actionable tips:* See individuals as human beings with inherent value, not just numbers or names.* Dedicate time and resources to foster genuine, person-to-person connections.* Build small, manageable groups for better interaction and deeper engagement.* Embed empathy and respect in every interaction, even if it requires more time and effort.By following Zufi Deo's example and advice, you can make inspiring collective passion a skill. With practice and effort, you could make it a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world.Remember, however, that research into success suggests that building on your own superpowers is more important than creating new ones or overcoming weaknesses. Green Party MP Darleen Tana has been suspended amid allegations she is linked to migrant exploitation at her husband's company. A statement from the Greens' co-leaders said Tana was suspended on Thursday afternoon because it was a conflict of interest with her small business portfolio. The claims first came to light on February 1 when Tana informed the party a complaint had been made to the Employment Relations Authority (ERA) by a worker at her husband's business, E-Bikes NZ. “On February 9, the party was notified of a second complaint to the ERA,” the statement reads. These complaints included allegations against Ms. Tana. Ms. Tana has not been a director or shareholder of E Cycles NZ since 2019.” She was suspended after it became apparent, she may have previously been aware of the allegations. As Green party co-leader, Chloe Swarbrick told Mike Hosking this morning, an independent lawyer is conducting the investigation. Now these are only allegations - as we know there is to be an independent investigation. If Darleen is lost to politics that would be a shame. She appears to be no dumb bunny - Darleen holds degrees in Chemical Technology and International Business Management with senior leadership experience in European telco (1997-2014), and SME manufacturing/retail in e-mobility here in Aotearoa (2014-2020). But the Greens don't have all their sorrows to seek in the one day what with Golriz Gharaman pleading guilty to shoplifting yesterday and James Shaw quitting the party. Before everyone gets too uppity about the Greens and their moral failings though, all parties' MPs are living in glass houses, and it would not behoove them to throw stones. We're only going back a few years - we simply don't have the time to go any further back - and there are some egregious sins that have been committed by MPs across the spectrum from 2017 onwards. Most of us can commit errors of judgment, even criminal activity of drink driving and continue in our jobs? Is it the party selection process or is it the fact that we are all flawed and imperfect? And we have to accept that it's across the political spectrum now. No one party is blameless or faultless. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The acting bug only kicked in at a much later age as she developed a passion for writing. She pursued an impressive academic career before giving in to acting. She studied International Business Management at The Hague University (BSc) and Anthropology and Journalism (MA) at the renowned Leiden University. Surviving college through jobs in modelling and hospitality, she says that studying allowed her to travel the world. As a result, she speaks several languages, including Spanish, Portuguese, German, and French, as well as her native Dutch and English. She started growing more interested in acting, and after several successful Dutch film projects like Poolshoogte (2014), she moved to London to train at the prestigious Drama Centre London to obtain her third master's degree in screen acting (MA). The classes mixed actor students with director students, giving her a taste of work behind the camera. She joined theatre company The People's Company as an in-house cast member during this period. She was featured in one of their biggest productions, Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream (2019), as fairy queen Titania in collaboration with the Southwark Playhouse. She performed on stage and toured the UK with the Extreme Improv Comedy Club, directed by David Pustansky. Around this time, she also became passionate about Flamenco dance, which led to the short documentary Andalusia (2018). Gabby is the Senior Strategic Partner Manager for International Sports Convention Season Ticket holder, Greenfly, a digital platform seeking to maximise fan engagement opportunities for sports, clubs and leagues globally. Greenfly enables organisations to capture, distribute and organise content. They have become established as part of the short-form content infrastructure. Gabby previously spent four years working for Meta in a Partnerships role and had a brief spell as New Media Partnerships Director for Copa 90. Gabby also includes Google among her previous employers and she has a First Class honours degree in International Business Management from Newcastle University. Gabby on the evolution of short-form content: "When you look at the way short-form content has evolved over the last few years, it's been pretty astronomical. You've had the introduction of social media platforms like Tik-Tok for instance, but equally, existing social media platforms, whether it's Instagram or You Tube have evolved their platforms to keep up with this shift in consumer trends. Gabby on globalisation of content: "Because it is short, short-form content can translate into different interests and cultures. You can make that much more accessible to fans who don't have to sit there for several minutes. You can consume a good variety of short-form content in a short space of time and I think as long as the quality is there, you can translate and make short-form content appealing to all kinds of people. I think that although that kind of content appeals to sports fans, it also appeals to casual fans. So you don't have to be hardcore fans of tennis or F1, to watch that content. I do believe if the content is engaging and entertaining, you will get an audience. We try and show our clients that yes, you are a sports entity, but you have to be in entertainment too." Gabby on User-Generated content: "USG is a really powerful tool to enable fans to be brought closer to the action. It makes content a lot more relatable to see yourself represented in that and touching on the diversity point of view, whether you are a league, a team, or a federation, you are able to represent the diversity of your fanbase and give them the microphone to tell their own stories and how they perceive the club and how they enjoy following the journey from their own perspective."
In this week's episode, host Tom Butta sits down with Cindy Davis, an independent Board Member at Airship, to discuss how there is still time to prepare for the future of marketing channels if you start today. Otherwise, your brand might wake up in five years without any real way to engage your customers.Formerly an EVP at Walmart, Disney, L Brands and Chief Brand Officer at Bed Bath & Beyond, Cindy is she's an experienced executive with a demonstrated history of driving results across the retail, hospitality and entertainment industries by building strong brands and customer relationships. Tom asks why Cindy decided to join the Airship Board of Directors in September of 2022, and what advice she has for other women out there looking to serve on a board themselves one day. Additionally, you'll hear key data regarding mobile retention numbers (hint: the average might be lower than you expect), what opportunities we now have post-2020, and Cindy's thoughts on who internally should really be responsible for the mobile app. —Guest BioCindy Davis became an independent Board Member at Airship in 2022. That ALL Might Be Edified: Discussions on Servant Leadership
This week's guest is a great friend who I look up to like a big brother, Darren Lifferth. Darren teaches us through words, stories, and examples how important it is to be open to opportunities when they arise, even if the timing might feel off according to our plans. Darren highlights the importance of doing a gut check everyday to make sure you are moving in the right direction and focusing on the the right priorities. Darren shares some personal stories that illustrate how examples from his life have helped him become the servant leader he is today and how holding people accountable can be vital to serving them. We talked about an inspirational address from Elder Alvin Meredith III about how to look down the road to center ourselves and it showed even deeper how we are more connected than we realize. Darren shared his reason for choosing the path of international business so that he could help people become more connected and reliant on one another so there would be less conflict in the world. Darren Lifferth is the Cat Card Business Excellence and International Business Development Manager for Cat Financial based in Nashville, Tennessee. He leads a cross functional team of project leaders, data scientists, and strategy experts on developing new business opportunities internationally. Darren has worked for Caterpillar for almost 20 years in a variety of positions and locations globally. He joined Caterpillar as a Credit Analyst after earning his bachelors degree in International Business Management from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. While in Nashville he took on additional responsibilities as a Customer Service Representative handling collections, loan modifications, repossessions, and reporting. Next he moved into a Documentation Analyst role followed by a Transaction Coordinator role supporting loan documentation creation, negotiation, and government filing of title documents. During these roles Darren spent considerable time working in Brazil. In 2007 he earned his MBA from Auburn University with an emphasis in Finance. From 2007 through 2013 he held sales roles in Florida as an International Account Manager and in Louisiana as a Senior International Account Manager. In 2013 he relocated his family to Singapore to lead the sales efforts as the Asia Pacific Sales Manager. In 2016 he transitioned into the Asia Pacific Marketing Manager. In both of these roles Darren was able to travel extensively throughout Asia to support customers and Caterpillar Dealers. In 2018 he moved his family to Bangkok, Thailand to become the Managing Director for Thailand managing all company operations for sales, credit, customer service, legal, compliance, HR, and reporting. During the start of the pandemic he moved his family back to Nashville, Tennessee where he transitioned in to the Business Excellence Manager for Cat Financial responsible for strategy development and governance, project management, 6 Sigma, Lean, data strategy development and governance, and company resource allocation. Darren's current responsibilities as the Cat Card Business Excellence and International Development Manager focus on growing business opportunities internationally. Darren and Sarah were the first couple ever married at the Nashville Tennessee Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in May 2000 and they now have six children ranging in age from 6 to 20 years old. He loves all things outdoors like running, sports, hiking, canoeing, rock climbing, fishing, hunting, mountain biking, and sitting around a camp fire. Hobbies include cheering for UT, Auburn, TN Titans, and the New Orleans Saints, sewing outdoor gear like hammocks and backpacks, ham radios, 4x4 offroading, timing the stock market, keeping up with current events, traveling, and eating delicious food. Most of the time he's with his family on some adventure when he's not working. Resources: Elder Alvin F. This is the last podcast episode I am recording before the end of this crazy, intense, and just straight out tough year that 2020 turned out to be. So I just wanted to say thank you to the guests of all 26 episodes I've recorded so far. I really appreciate that you set aside some of your precious time to talk with me, sometimes during quite stressful moments. This was especially the case for the episodes I recorded early on in the pandemic, when there was so much more uncertainty than there is now. I also wanted to say thank you to all you listeners. On the day I am publishing this episode (December 22nd), we are approaching no less than 6,000 plays! It's been an amazing journey and I've learned so much. Recording these podcast episodes has turned out to be the second best thing to meeting people at international book fairs, which I do hope we can go back to again very soon in the New Year as I miss seeing you all... Now, on to today's episode, on which I'm joined by Rubén Padilla of the Guadalajara International Book Fair, also known as the FIL. This book fair was one of the last, if not the last of the year and as many events that took place this year, it went fully digital. I was curious to hear Rubén's impressions and experiences, especially since the FIL is very much a public fair, besides providing a trade program for international publishing professionals. In fact I learned during the interview that it was created for the public, to give people an opportunity to buy books, as the city of Guadalajara was lacking bookstores at the time. Having a chat with Rubén was a wonderful way to end this year and I hope you'll enjoy it too! Show Notes Rubén's book recommendations – Cometierra by Dolores Reyes (Sigilo for the Spanish (ex USA) edition; to be published as Eartheater in English, translated by Julia Sanches, with HarperVia in September 2021) – Un corazón demasiado grande by Eider Rodriguez (Literatura Random House for the Spanish edition, we didn't find information on a possible forthcoming English edition at the time this episode was published) – Las Malas by Camila Sosa (Tusquets for the Spanish edition, we didn't find information on a possible forthcoming English edition at the time this episode was published) About Rubén Graduated in International Business Management, Rubén works as General Coordinator of Professionals at the Guadalajara International Book Fair (FIL). Among his main tasks, he develops the content of programs such as the International Publishers and Book Professionals Forum, the International Forum of University and Academic Presses and the International Forum of Editorial Design. He is also in charge of the FIL Rights Exchange, the fellowship program of FIL for publishers and editors interested in Spanish-speaking authors. Jury of the 9th Iberoamerican Illustrated Catalog in 2018, he has participated as a speaker in various forums and professional training activities of the publishing industry in the Book Fairs of Bologna (Italy), Buenos Aires (Argentina), Festilus (Chile), LéaLA (USA), Taipei (Taiwan), Bogotá (Colombia), Medellin (Colombia), Oaxaca (Mexico), as well as in specialized meetings such as Festilus (Chile), TLA Annual Conference (USA) and FILI (Finland). He participated in the Istanbul Fellowship Program in 2020.

Have you noticed that the work ethic in many children nowadays leaves much to be desired? I have! And, I want to raise kids who are different. I want to have kids who want to work, and serve, and glorify God in ALL that they do. And today, I am chatting this topic and so much more with Mark Baker, owner of Christian Homeschool Entrepreneurs. Mark holds a Master’s degree in International Business Management and is a serial web entrepreneur. He loves creative thinking. And is currently working on a clothing brand called Married is Great (marriedisgreat.com) in addition to Christian Homeschool Entrepreneurship. He and his wife homeschool seven wonderful children and are devoted followers of Christ. A strong work ethic originates from God... I ask Mark what he thinks this means, as well as a few other questions, including: Why do you think the current generation tends to shy away from work? How can we as parents raise kids who want to work and honor God in all that they do? So, you have created a program that can help kids have a Christian mindset towards work. Can you share with us a little bit about this program? If you want to raise kids who stand out in the world, don't miss this episode! If you liked this episode be sure to leave a rating or review. Holly DeVito and her husband started remodeling houses several years ago on a whim as they wanted to update the house they were living in. A few houses later, they are now finishing up a farmhouse project — made even more challenging since they did it while they were also living there. She really enjoys having a vision and seeing it come together. Holly said there are many skills that have translated directly to her work, including patience, project management, budgeting and most importantly, dealing with chaos. In this episode, we talk about how she first kept her hobbies separate from work early in her career. Now, she has clients talking to her about their farms and other remodeling projects. She didn’t realize how much it actually happened until we talked at the Quickbooks Connect Conference a few months ago. I really like how she approaches clients and coworkers for lifetime relationships, not just transactional ones. Holly DeVito is the Founder and CEO of Sum of All Numbers, a bookkeeping and payroll services firm. Prior to that, she was the CFO at The American Red Cross. She studied International Business Management at Brigham Young University – Hawaii and Utah State University.
