#420 Why Indian Firms must Invest More in R&D

The Core Report

In this weekend edition of The Core Report, prominent Indian businessman and Co-Chairperson of Forbes Marshall Naushad Forbes and Financial journalist Govindraj Ethiraj explore the reasons why Indian companies are lagging behind global firms in R&D spending. Forbes argues that India's investment in R&D is significantly lower than the world average, with Indian firms only investing 0.3% of their GDP in R&D compared to 1.5% globally. This low investment stems from a combination of factors, including a lack of awareness about the benefits of R&D, a perception that Indian firms are already investing enough, and an absence of a strong internal culture that prioritizes innovation. He emphasizes that while there is a readily available pool of R&D talent in India, it is often utilized by foreign companies, rather than Indian ones. Mr. Forbes also highlights that a lack of aggressive competition in the domestic market due to protective tariffs, coupled with a reluctance to engage with Asian markets, is hindering the growth of R&D in India. Forbes advocates for policies that promote competitiveness, such as a reduction in tariffs and participation in free trade agreements, to incentivize Indian firms to invest more in R&D. Listeners! Today on the podcast, we have Bridgeport Mayor Joseph Ganim. After five terms as the mayor of the largest city in the state of Connecticut from 1991 to 2003, Joe was brought down in a corruption scandal for which he served six years in a federal prison. After his release from prison, in 2015 Joe ran again for mayor of Bridgeport and he was reelected. He is currently serving his seventh term as mayor. What I find most fascinating about Joe is his resilience and resourcefulness - his willingness to take risks and subject himself to public scrutiny after all he'd been through. Certainly, his story is a lesson to other people convicted of felonies that life is not over once you go to prison.Full disclosure: In 2016 and 2017, I served as Co-Chairperson of the Advisory Board to the City of Bridgeport Mayor's Initiative on Reentry Affairs. So coming up, Mayor Joseph Ganim on White Collar Week. I hope you will join us. - Jeff______________________Welcome to White Collar Week with Jeff Grant, a podcast serving the white collar justice community. It’s the isolation that destroys us. The solution is in community. If you are interested in this podcast, then you are probably already a member of the white collar justice community – even if you don’t quite know it yet. Our community is certainly made up of people being prosecuted, or who have already been prosecuted, for white collar crimes. But it is also made up of the spouses, children and families of those prosecuted for white collar crimes – these are the first victims of white collar crime. And the community also consists of the other victims, both direct and indirect, and those in the wider white collar ecosystem like friends, colleagues, prosecutors, defense attorneys, judges, law enforcement, academics, researchers. Investigators, mitigation experts, corrections officers, reentry professionals, mental health care professionals, drug and alcohol counselors, – and ministers, chaplains and advocates for criminal and social justice reform. The list goes on and on…Our mission is to introduce you to other members of the white collar justice community, to hear their very personal stories, and hopefully gain a broader perspective of what this is really all about. Maybe this will inspire some deeper thoughts and introspection? Maybe it will inspire some empathy and compassion for people you might otherwise resent or dismiss? And maybe it will help lift us all out of our own isolation and into community, so we can learn to live again in the sunshine of the spirit. Blessings, לשלוםJeff Rev. USA Water Polo Coaches Association.Sandy was coach to the gold medal team at the 2006 FINA Masters World Championships and the women’s 50+ division at the 2012 Senior Games. She is the first and only female water polo coach in the U. S. Water Polo Hall of Fame and in her honor, the “Sandy Nitta Distinguished Women’s Coach Award” is presented annually by United States Water Polo.Sandy’s greatest influence to her water polo players under her guidance is her character. As a competitive swimmer, she was short making it difficult competing against taller swimmers. She would be leading by a body length before the turn and come out of the turn a half body length behind. But her drive and toughness led to a position on the Olympic Team. She fought for the “underdog”. When she began coaching the City Of Commerce Water Polo Team, it consisted mostly of lower income, Hispanic families who also were not tall nor came from competitive backgrounds. Yet, they achieved success. When coaching the USA Women’s National Team in the 1980’s, she had 125 to 150 players across the entire United States. Even when coaching them outside of the California hot-bed of water polo, Sandy achieved success from her players. It shows greatness and sound character.Sandy enjoys fresh water fishing, playing video games and playing poker. But you may want to think twice before putting any money on the poker table. She made it to the final table at the World Series of Poker in Las Vegas - a real smart competitor.
