Peanut butter and chocolate. Brian Michael Bendis and Alex Maleev. Two great tastes that taste great together. Whether you first encountered their delicious collaboration through Daredevil, Moon Knight, Scarlet, or whatever, once experienced, you must gorge on the rest. And it's an event - an emergency feast - whenever they reunite. Hitting shops on December 13th, Masterpiece from Dark Horse Comics is the next irresistible banquet from Brian Michael Bendis and Alex Maleev. In the solicits, you can see a few hallmarks you've come to expect from the two. However, we've read the first issue, and we assure you that this new crime series allows them to play in ways you haven't seen them do before. Bendis back at the drawing table? Yuuuup. Emma is a smart cookie. Her inventions and webcomics have paid her way through the fanciest schools. The sixteen-year-old seems like she's got it all figured out. Until a shady billionaire darkens her doorway, telling tales about her supposedly world-famous master criminal parents. Now, Emma has to put a squad together, uncover her genetic origins, and navigate a rich jerkwad's vengeance scheme. On this week's episode, we chat with Brian Michael Bendis and Alex Maleev about their long-lasting friendship and how it has fed their creative partnership and vice versa. We discuss what makes a Bendis/Maleev joint, their secret and not-so-secret Todd McFarlane origins, and how both had to adjust their working habits to aid the other. And we dig deep into Masterpiece and how it was born from generational tension. Are JNCO jeans really back??? Keep up to date on all things Brian Michael Bendis by subscribing to his Substack. Was there much back and forth as the story started to take form?Andre, your scenic work is just so incredibly detailed. Episode 150! "Not an apocalypse...something far more interesting." André Lima Araújo and Brian Michael Bendis celebrate our 150th episode by providing an immensely eclectic conversation discussing their new all-ages sci-fi adventure saga, Phenomena: The Golden City of Eyes. These two creators are two great tastes that taste great together despite their frequently contradictory points of view. As you'll hear, Araújo and Bendis see the world quite differently, but their opposing sensibilities unleash something utterly unique through the collaborative process. Phenomena: The Golden City of Eyes is the first part of a trilogy published by Abrams ComicArts. It's a rollicking adventure set in a future where our world has...changed. Three wanderers (Bolden, Spike, and Matilde) stumble into each other and reluctantly form a bond while attempting to unravel the mystery of the titular city. Bendis provides a bubbly, naturalistic voice to Araújo's stark yet hyper-realized illustration. You've probably experienced numerous comics from both parties, but we promise you've never seen anything from either of them like Phenomena. The comic is a heap of contradictions: joyous yet harrowing, fluffy but deadly serious. At the center, Araújo and Bendis suggest an urgent reckoning with storytelling, an art form we too often take for granted. Phenomena: The Golden City of Eyes hits book shelves everywhere on 9/13. All you have to do is turn the cover. Panel one will ensnare your attention. Keep up to date on all things Brian Michael Bendis by subscribing to his Substack. You can also track him down via Twitter, Instagram, and his Website. Follow André Lima Araújo through his Website, Twitter, and Instagram. 150 episodes. Phenomena: The Golden City of Eyes is the first book in a new YA graphic novel series by Brian Michael Bendis and André Lima Araújo from Abrams Books. It's an art-forward story of three desperate characters in our world after something strange and universe-changing took place. We sat down with its creators to discuss how their collaboration came to be, what makes this book special for them as creators, and how taking an art first, dialogue minimal approach lent itself to making such a satisfying journey.

Hey all, the CDB Crew is back with a regular episode after our short break. For this special episode, Darci chose the recently released, first volume of Verse by Sam Beck, published by Vault Comics on the Wonderbound imprint. If you are familiar with Beck's previous works, it will not come as a surprise about how great a read this is and how gorgeous it looks. We hope that we can convince you to pick up this under-the-radar masterpiece. That's not all that makes this episode special. We are introducing a new format all-together: we are adding in a new, ongoing segment, DIY Corner- where we will discuss comics that are being self-published, self-released online, and/or are being Crowd-Funded, while cutting back on our discussions and news segments. Once again, a big purpose of this podcast is to help give notice to comics that might not necessarily get a lot of press or discussion on comic book social media. For the inaugural DIY Corner, we talk about Dirruti: Shadow of the People, Hans Vogel is Dead, The Uncontrollable Wreck-Lass!, and Kardiakía: Stories of Representation: Queer Love and Fat Bodies. We also talk about Dune: A Whisper of Caladan Seas #1 by Brian Herbert, Kevin J. Anderson, Jakub Rebelka, and Ed Dukeshire (BOOM); The Night Mother by Melanie Gillman; and A Righteous Thirst for Vengeance #1 by Rick Remender, André Lima Araújo, Chris O'Halloran, and Rus Wooton (Image) The Night Mother can be found here: https://melgillman.tumblr.com/post/664267309279576064/the-night-mother DIY Corner: Dirruti: Shadow of the People: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/autonomouscollective/durruti-shadow-of-the-people Hans Vogel is Dead: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/castironbooks/hans-vogel-is-dead-volume-i The Uncontrollable Wreck-Lass!: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/amoralstingray5/the-uncontrollable-wreck-lass?ref=profile_saved_projects_live Kardiakía Stories of Representation: Queer Love and Fat Bodies: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/ehmautoproduzioni/kardiakia?ref=discovery_category Comics Deserve Better is a weekly podcast hosted by Brian, Carrie and Darci which covers the world of Independent Comics. Time Codes: 00:00:33 - Introduction 00:03:04 - Baby, it's cold outside 00:05:38 - Generation Gone, Vol. 1 00:37:45 - Assassinistas #1 00:55:04 - Love and Rockets IV #4 01:20:02 - Wrap up 01:21:16 - Contact us This week Gwen and Derek take a look at three recent and exciting titles. They begin with the first trade collection of Aleš Kot and André Lima Araújo's Generation Gone (Image Comics). This initial volume establishes the premise of the intriguing series. The story focuses on three hackers who attempt to get into government systems, are discovered, and "infected" with genetic codes that give them supernatural powers. Gwen points out that, in some ways, this narrative is reminiscent of Katsuhiro Otomo's Akira, although as Derek mentions, Kot and Araújo's world isn't anything post-apocalyptic. This first volume introduces what promises to be an engaging series and whets readers' appetites for what may follow. Next, the Two People with PhDs Talking about Comics turn to the first of two Hernandez-infused comics covered this week. The first is Gilbert Hernandez and Tini Howard's Assassinistas #1, part of IDW Publications' and Shelly Bond's Black Crown imprint. The debut issue introduces us to three former assassins, two of which -- at least as far as we know -- have left that life and are attempting to "go legitimate" and live a normal life. However, drama erupts when one of the team, Charlotte “Scarlet” La Costa, has her son kidnapped, bringing another team member, Octavia “Red October” Price, back into a life she thought she had left behind her. And what of the third member of this one-time trio, Rosalyn “Blood” Diamond? Both of the cohosts enjoyed this title, although the paratextual material in the back of this issue, commentary from editor Shelly Bond, is a bit conspicuous and doesn't add much. Finally, Derek and Gwen wrap up by discussing the latest issue of Love and Rockets IV (Fantagraphics). This fourth issue picks up with the various storylines that both Jaime and Gilbert Hernandez have established going back to the previous Love and Rockets annuals. For Jaime, this means continuing the Princess Animus and Isle narratives, as well as giving us glimpses into both Maggie's and Hopey's pasts growing up in Hoppers. And then there's Derek's favorite part of this issue, a two-page focus on Ray that follows up on the events in The Love Bunglers. Gilbert's contributions gives us a brief glimpse into Killer's career choices, but there is also a Pipo storyline where this foundational character tries to come to terms with a relationship she once had in Palomar. In fact, in extended flashbacks, we're taken back to "classic" Palomar and characters we haven't seen for quite a while. But as Derek points out, one of the most striking things about this issue is that we see little of Fritz...and no mention at all of any Fritz imitators. A rarity in recent Love and Rockets issues!
