James Daunt calls him "the best of the best in U.K. publishing, constantly challenging the industry to move on when it drags its feet." Listen to my conversation with Andrew Franklin to learn why. Andrew is founder and, until recently, publisher of Profile Books, an award-winning British independent publishing house which launched in 1996. Best-selling authors on its list include Mary Beard, Margaret Macmillan, Simon Garfield (Just my Type), and Lynne Truss, whose Eats, Shoots, Leaves (2003) sold more than three million copies worldwide and won Book of the Year at the British Book Awards in 2004. Serpent's Tail, founded by Pete Ayrton in 1986, became an imprint of Profile in 2007. It publishes distinctive, award-winning international fiction. Viper Books, a crime imprint, was added in 2019. I met with Andrew at Profile's offices in London. We talk about, among other things, how much he made off Eats, Shoots, Leaves; selling paperbacks at Hatchards; Tim Waterstone; my tee-shirt; admiration as a key component of successful publishing; conviction and effort, judgement and horse-racing; taste and fashion; tee-shirt designer briefs; "content before commerce;" risk; rom-com; Hilary Mantel; the importance of style versus substance; Goethe; marketing, distribution and sales; taking books seriously; getting the right books into the right hands; freedom of the press; Butler to the World; non-conformism; and Mary Beard's Emperor of Rome. You might want to pay special attention to how Andrew speaks about Mary Beard and her book. And Margaret Macmillan for that matter. The enthusiasm, vigour, conviction. Belief. They're trademarks of all great publishers.

In today's episode, I'm rejoined by our good friend, business partner and owner of The Franklin Team, Andrew Franklin. Andrew runs a successful team that closed over 1700 transactions last year, and in addition to that, he has now built multiple ancillary businesses, including one that has caught up to the revenue of his sales team in 5 years. He's going to share exactly how he did this. Andrew Franklin is a real estate leader, entrepreneur and partner at The Franklin Team. The Franklin Team has decades of experience in the business and sells well over thirty times the number of homes than the average real estate agent! Andrew is owner and partner on The Franklin Team. He has been around residential real estate since he was a kid and learned early that putting clients' needs first is always smart business. The Franklin Team's main objective is to efficiently deliver world class service with accuracy, integrity and professionalism. Andrew has also added investing, title and hard money lending to his business, by leveraging the success of his sales team and agents in his network. How did Andrew Franklin create multiple streams of income, including a title operation that has caught up to his sales team's revenue in less than 5 years? By tapping into the real estate ecosystem around him. If you run a real estate team, there's a ton of lanes you can go into and make your world bigger, create ancillary revenue, and provide a better solution for the consumer. We have the opportunity to tap into the ecosystem of relationships we all have as agents, and create a win through our own networks. Now more than ever, agents are putting huge deals together by simply collaborating with other agents and being in the right rooms. In every person is the engrained need for love, identity and dignity. The world cannot offer these things; they will always fall short. When the world disappoints and abuses, God will always forgive, sanctify and justify us when we seek Him. Hear guest speaker, Andrew Franklin, share his story and point us to the gospel of Jesus.
Although Andrew Franklin's father had a successful real estate business, he was against the idea that his children would follow in his footsteps. Somehow, he believed that the real estate agent will be eliminated in the future. So Andrew worked in investment banking for 6 years, primarily on mergers and acquisitions. But real estate runs in their family's blood and Andrew didn't just want to be his father's son. He wanted to try and grow their business and not screw it up. This is why, eight years ago, he, his sister, and a third partner decided to buy his father's real estate business. Today, Andrew Franklin is the owner/partner at The Franklin Team where he has helped grow the business from having 3 to 4 agents doing up to 600 deals with $150 million in sales, to having 25 agents that will sell 1,800 homes for more than $600 million in sales this year. They have also successfully created ancillary businesses as part of their growth. In this episode, we talked about: 04:52 How Andrew and his partners acquired the business from his father 06:50 What sets The Franklin Team apart 07:11 Why Andrew considers builder leads a very warm and predictable listing lead 15:30 Why it's okay to rip off and duplicate business models in real estate 16:42 How The Franklin Team took out 99.99% of their competitors 24:55 What made them decide to start their own title company 26:54 Why they moved from REMAX to eXp 29:26 Where's Andrew thinks the industry is going over the next 3-5 years 32:23 The great thing about having ancillary businesses in real estate 32:49 Why Andrew thinks the real estate agent will continue to be around in some form or fashion in the future 34:13 The most important investment we can make. 37:23 Why Andrew's father changed his mindset about coaching 43:41 Andrew's one piece of advice for those who are striving to grow?
