One of the things I love about my coach Kelsey Murphy is how she talks about how data protects our emotions in the long run. So many coaches cry every day. We love everyone we see and want to save the world all the time. We have these huge hearts that shy away from numbers and data. But Kelsey marries the two in a way that lets us protect our big hearts so we can do more.    Kelsey is a career and business coach for Fortune 500 companies like Twitter and Facebook, along with entrepreneurs like Kelly Leveque (Jessica Alba's nutritionist). She's also the host of The Whiskey and Work Podcast and previously worked as the advertising account director.    It's rare to have a “coach and coachee” conversation that pulls back the curtains. Still, Kelsey is excited to share because she deeply believes in transparency.   “That's why I really like Marie [Forleo], I love Cathy [Heller], and I love Amy [Porterfield]. They're very honest and open, and so even though they have these shiny personas, you get in. You have these real conversations with them, and they're very transparent."   That transparency is echoed when Kelsey talks about her journey. In the beginning, Kelsey needed to freelance to support her business. It wasn't making money, and she didn't have someone in the wings funding her.    She says she had to swallow her pride for the first few years until her business generated enough income to support her, her retirement, and her savings.   She hid behind the curtains for many years, trying to figure out what she loved to do. She knew being an account director for Nintendo wasn't what she wanted to do and wouldn't grant her the freedom she wanted. The question became, what was the intersection between love and money?    What could she do that she would love, put in the world, and be known for that could also bring financial stability. She says sometimes it takes some people longer to figure that out and acknowledges that she wasn't a “doer.”    She's an over-thinker – so in building a business, her first years were slow as she reflected on all her different passions. She tested things out – from career coaching to massage therapy -- to find the place she could plant her flag, fall in love with and then create that true stream of income that wasn't hard.   Kelsey tried out career coaching for a while, which is how she met Marie Forleo. Marie brought her to coach people on their small businesses. As she started working, she found two niches – podcasts and creating a sustainable coaching business.   She tested out owning a podcast as an expert for a year and, in doing so, garnered referrals and the most money she's made at the time in her business.    "This is why you focus on one thing because that is where the momentum comes," says Kelsey.    However, when she started gaining referrals to speak at podcasting conferences, she realized she wanted to turn them down. It wasn't her passion, but coaching coaches were.   "I could talk about coaching for hours, the empathy behind coaching, the way coaches are built. The fact breaking my heart is that coaches are not successful financially because they're missing the tools to build that business," she says.   Kelsey says whether you're just starting out or you've been in the game but feel like nothing is hitting – remind yourself you're in it for the long game. It doesn't feel fun when you're in the trenches and like you're constantly problem-solving. But if you recognize, “I'm not in this for the next year or six months; I'm in this for the next 10 years,” you start thinking differently.    It takes the pressure off. Look at this as a long-term investment. It shifts the entire experience from the moment. Adrianna Keefe joins Whiskey and Work to talk about her success following a specific niche. Kelsey and Adrianna talk about the power of settling into this and gaining confidence to market yourself as an expert. Sit back and grab a notebook, the two lay out how to do just this through their own stories.    What we're talking about… Adrianna Keefe describes herself as a mother of three, a wife, a human design coach and speaker.  Due to some three-year-old mischievousness, this episode lays the foundation for how Adrianna grew her business and a future episode will dive into human design. Please also note this episode does entail some mildly explicit language. Adrianna shares about her quarter life crisis and how she became very attracted to the idea of spirituality.  While diving into this learning she was introduced to human design, but continued to add other skills to her tool box of knowledge.  Adrianna explains how her main objective was to help mothers that felt as she had during her own quarter life crisis. However, her exact focus wasn't clear as she was hesitant to declare a niche for herself. During this time, she practiced reading human design charts for friends, family members, and various clients for free or for a low charge. On a call one day she opted to introduce herself as a “human design expert”  This proclamation immediately brought more business her way because it clarified her business purpose as a coach.  These clients were often one-and-done chart readers — raising a new dilemma in her practice.  She then created a mid level online course based on client feedback to create a space that allowed clients to keep working on these skills without the financial restraints of one-on-one coaching. This middle ground approach is ultimately what grew her and allows it to grow today.  The two talk about the importance and freedom of having a minimalist business as a mom.  Want more of Adrianna or want to learn more about human design? Kelsey reflects on her season of gratitude following the trials and tribulations of New Year's resolutions and the busyness of life. In this journey she shares a story about second-grade Kelsey who felt unconditional love and how she wants to give this to her kids, husband and clients.    What we're talking about… Kelsey talks on her big gratitude kick after a season that can level you feeling like you didn't accomplish enough  How she's working to retrain her brain to be more grateful for everything she is doing and all she has accomplished Why this skill lets her live in a world where she has time for all the things she loves in life A moment of appreciation for the community her business and this shows gives her While trying to get her creative juices flowing, she searched some writing prompts and was asked to tell a story from when you were a kid in school Of all the little moments and stories that came back, she reflected on one that shaped her into who she is and wants to be today She then paints this picture:  Who second-grade Kelsey was (not a teacher's dream)  Why she lost her privilege to participate in ribbon day with the rest of her class Her agonizing as she had to sit her the classroom by herself attempting to finish an assignment while all her classmates were having fun Her teacher's warmth in saying she was proud of her for trying  How this moment showed Kelsey unconditional love  How she wants to use the love in this story and give it to her kids, her husband and clients  Because Kelsey can so closely relate to the highs and lows of building a business, she wants to serve as that rock of unconditional love as others go through this Remember: you are doing a great job, stay in the game    A {free} Tool or Two!  Did someone say free? When French king Charles VIII laid claims to the Kingdom of Naples and invaded Italy in September, 1494, an anti-French coalition called the League of Venice was formed, with the aim of kicking France out of the Italian peninsula. “Hang on a second, what does this have to do with the Netherlands?”, I hear you ask. Bear with me here. The League of Venice included a bunch of Italian city-states and regional powers, including the Pope Alexander VI, as well as our friend Emperor Maximilian and the Catholic Monarchs of Spain, Isabella of Castile and Ferdinand of Aragon. To help cement this anti-French alliance between Spain and the Habsburgs, a double marriage was arranged which would see Maximilian's children marry the children of the Spanish monarchs Isabella and Ferdinand.
