Devan Seabaugh has been postponed for the fourth time, with a new pre-trial hearing set for November 22. Seabaugh, who was absent from the recent hearing, faces seven charges, including DUI, following an August incident where he allegedly hit a cyclist. His attorney requested the delay to gather more evidence. Seabaugh denies being intoxicated, claiming he was unaware of the bike lane due to inadequate signage. The cyclist involved suffered minor injuries and was unsure if he was struck by Seabaugh's vehicle. STORY 2:  Marietta Super Proposes Weapons Detectors For Schools Marietta City Schools plans to implement weapons detectors in grades six through 12 following recent incidents involving firearms. Superintendent Grant Rivera proposed using pass-through detectors and AI weapons detection integrated with existing cameras. The initiative aims to enhance safety without disrupting school routines. The district is interviewing vendors and plans to operationalize the system soon. Additionally, the district will hire a second school resource officer and transition part-time officers to full-time roles. Safety measures include secured access, visitor screening, and an emergency alert app, with ongoing community engagement to ensure effective implementation.   STORY 3:  Cobb Commission Special Election Set for April A special election for two Cobb County Board of Commissioners seats is set for April 29, following a court ruling that invalidated previous elections due to an unconstitutional "home rule" map. The election will fill District 2 and District 4 seats, with candidates like Alicia Adams and Jaha Howard running for District 2. Incumbent Monique Sheffield will run for District 4. Voters in these districts, as defined by the 2022 state map, are eligible to vote. Qualifying runs from December 18-20, with primaries on February 11 and early voting starting January 21. Rivera's base salary will increase to $269,742, with a total compensation package of $450,629, plus a $10,000 annual bonus. The board has consistently extended his contract since he began in 2017, aligning with Georgia's three-year limit on superintendent contracts. Board Chair Jeff DeJarnett praised Rivera for his efforts in improving district literacy rates, noting the progress as a model for the state. STORY 5:  KSU and Wellstar Double Nursing Student Enrollment Kennesaw State University (KSU) and Wellstar Health System have doubled the enrollment at KSU's Wellstar School of Nursing over the past four years to address Georgia's nursing shortage. With a $9 million commitment from Wellstar, KSU increased its nursing enrollment from 512 in 2019-20 to 1,155 in 2023-24, hired 32 new faculty, and expanded course offerings. This partnership enhances educational opportunities and supports Georgia's healthcare needs. Wellstar also provides scholarships and tuition reimbursement, further aiding students. Health screenings such as vision, A1C, blood glucose, and blood pressure tests were provided, alongside vaccines, breast exams, prostate markers, and tests for conditions like hepatitis C and HIV. Partners like Wellstar Health System, Northside Hospital Cancer Institute, and various community organizations offered these services. The fair also featured resources from Medicare Fraud Patrol, Social Security Administration, Veterans Services, and others, aimed at supporting community members with legal, senior, and employment services. Lunch was co-sponsored by Chick-fil-A Canton and Medicare Fraud Patrol. STORY 2: Pedestrian Stuck on Reinhardt College Parkway in Canton   A pedestrian was hit by a vehicle on Reinhardt College Parkway in Canton, prompting a response from the Canton Police Department at 1:51 p.m. The pedestrian was taken to Wellstar Kennestone Hospital for treatment. Eastbound lanes of Reinhardt College Parkway from Waleska Road to Reservoir Drive were temporarily closed for the investigation and reopened by 4:30 p.m. STORY 3: Highway 140 Project Gets $7.5M in State Funding   State funding totaling $7.5 million has been allocated for widening Highway 140 in Cherokee and Fulton counties, with preliminary engineering set to commence in 2025. This funding is part of a broader $1.5 billion transportation infrastructure package announced by Gov. Brian Kemp, utilizing surplus funds earmarked earlier by state lawmakers for transportation improvements. State Rep. Brad Thomas, advocating for county infrastructure enhancements, emphasized the project's significance for quality of life and traffic safety. Cherokee County Commissioner Richard Weatherby credited Thomas for securing the funding, highlighting the project's role in addressing rapid growth and improving community infrastructure. These calendars maintain the district's "balanced calendar" approach, featuring weeklong breaks in September, February, November, and April, along with a two-week break starting in December. Developed by a committee of educators and parents, the calendars ensure that students begin no earlier than August 1 and conclude before Memorial Day each year. The confrontation, occurring in the parking lot of the QT Coin and Laundry, led to Jones being shot in the arm. He was rushed to the hospital with injuries deemed non-life-threatening. Higdon was apprehended by the police for questioning regarding the incident. Marietta Police Department's spokesperson, Officer Chuck McPhilamy, indicated that charges against Higdon are expected but will be finalized later. Witnesses highlighted the financial disagreement as the root cause of the altercation. STORY 2: One Arrested After Domestic Dispute Leads to SWAT Response In Marietta, a domestic dispute at Laurel Hills Preserve apartments escalated into a standoff, necessitating intervention by the Marietta Police Department's SWAT team. The situation unfolded Sunday evening after a report of a physical altercation between partners, resulting in one person's injury. Aleigha Ward, 31, barricaded herself inside, refusing cooperation and vowing to avoid jail at all costs. Despite negotiations, Ward, who was armed and made threats captured on bodycam footage, remained defiant. The standoff concluded around midnight when SWAT successfully apprehended Ward without further incident. She now faces charges including terroristic threats and misdemeanor battery, with her bond set at $2,420. STORY 3: Five People Displaced by Kennesaw House Fire A house fire in Kennesaw on Saturday night led to five people being displaced. Responding swiftly, Cobb County Fire crews arrived within six minutes and managed to put out the fire in roughly 30 minutes. According to Nick Danz, the public information officer for the department, there's suspicion that natural gas contributed to the fire's rapid spread, following a loud pop reported by residents. The incident began outside the home before engulfing it. The collision, involving 32-year-old Ali Babar from Marietta on a Honda CB500 motorcycle and 90-year-old Marilyn Jensen from Woodstock in a Honda Civic, occurred just before 9:45 a.m. at the intersection of Canton Road and Farm Ridge Drive. According to Cobb Police spokesperson Officer Aaron Wilson, the crash happened when Jensen, attempting a left turn, crossed into Babar's path, causing the motorcycle to hit the curb and Babar to be thrown onto the road. Both Babar and Jensen were seriously injured and taken to Wellstar Kennestone Hospital. The investigation is ongoing, with police urging witnesses to contact Cobb Police at 770-499-3987 with any information. STORY 5: Wellstar Names New Kennestone President Lorrie Liang is the newly appointed president of Wellstar Kennestone Regional Medical Center and Wellstar Windy Hill Hospital, where she will also serve as senior vice president of Wellstar Health System. Bringing over 25 years of healthcare experience from her previous role at Sarasota Memorial Hospital in Florida, Liang managed a 900-bed facility, showcasing her proficiency in hospital operations and healthcare systems management. She holds a master's degree in health services administration. Liang takes over from Mary Chatman, aiming to lead Kennestone's executive team, enhance collaborations across Wellstar markets, and drive further successes by engaging with community and healthcare stakeholders. We'll be back in a moment    Break: TEDS – INGLES 2   STORY 6: 'There is Hope': Mableton Councilwoman's Fight for MS Diagnosis Patricia Auch, serving on the Mableton City Council, encountered a life-changing challenge when diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, an autoimmune disease that compromises the protective covering of nerve fibers, leading to symptoms like vision loss in one eye. Navigating her diagnosis was fraught with difficulties, as skepticism from healthcare professionals delayed recognition and treatment, despite clear MRI findings. This reflects broader issues in healthcare, where studies indicate women, including those of color, often face dismissal of their pain, adversely affecting their care. Auch's determination led to her starting treatment with OCREVUS, thankfully covered by insurance, though it's notably costly. With her husband and community's support, Auch remains optimistic, ready to face her new reality with strength. STORY 7: Paving Project to Close Two Car Lots Near Chattahoochee River The Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area is in the process of a repaving project, temporarily closing the Columns Drive parking lot on Tuesday and the Powers Island lot on April 8. Meanwhile, the Interstate North lot has reopened. Though Columns Drive will be closed to vehicular traffic, it remains open for pedestrians and cyclists. This initiative aims to fix sub-surface issues, improve traffic flow and visibility, and update signage. The Akers Mill and Powers Island lots have been repaved as part of this project, which won't change the size or layout of the parking areas. Park officials are advising visitors to use alternative parking lots to reduce congestion and express gratitude for the public's patience during these enhancements. The incident occurred in the school's parking lot, leaving two individuals with non-life-threatening gunshot wounds. Foor, a witness to a physical altercation, produced a pistol and shot both victims. Another unidentified suspect also brandished a firearm, leading to gunfire without causing further injuries. The motive is under investigation, and the police emphasize it was a specific, targeted incident, not posing a broader threat to students. The second shooter remains unidentified. Increased police presence and counseling support are provided at McEachern High School. STORY 2: Man Pleads Guilty to Triple Homicide at Kennesaw Country Club Bryan Rhoden, charged with killing three individuals at a Kennesaw country club in July 2021, has pleaded guilty to murder. Initially facing the death penalty, Rhoden's plea deal ensures life imprisonment without parole. Rhoden murdered golf pro Gene Siller, Henry Valdez, and Paul Pierson. He bound Valdez and Pierson, transporting them to the golf course where he killed them. Rhoden pleaded guilty to 17 charges, including malice murder, felony murder, kidnapping, aggravated assault, possession of a firearm during a felony, and tampering with evidence. He received consecutive life imprisonment sentences without parole, ensuring he spends the rest of his life behind bars. STORY 3: Kennesaw Man Indicted in August Shooting Death of 15-Year-Old Lorenz McNeill, 22, from Kennesaw, was indicted by a Cobb grand jury for the fatal shooting of 15-year-old Tayshawn Omari Dean in August 2023. McNeill faces charges of involuntary manslaughter, possession of a firearm during a felony, and reckless conduct. The indictment states that McNeill aimed a semiautomatic handgun at Dean without checking if it was unloaded, resulting in a fatal shot to the back. Acworth Police found Dean unresponsive at Cobblestone Landing Apartments, and despite immediate first aid, he was pronounced dead at Kennestone Hospital. This initiative aims to provide free tax preparation services while educating students about the tax filing process. State Sen. Ed Setzler presented a map in the Georgia Senate, aiming to meet U.S. District Judge Eleanor Ross's deadline for a new map by Jan. 10, though this timeline is acknowledged as impossible to meet. State Rep. Sharon Cooper and state Rep. David Wilkerson called for compromise, highlighting issues with Setzler's map, such as separating high schools from their feeder schools. While some Republicans signaled support for Setzler's map, Democrats viewed his approach as uncompromising. The negotiation process will continue. STORY 2: Acworth Seeking Suspect in Credit Card Theft from Assisted Living Facility The Acworth Police Department is seeking a woman who allegedly used stolen credit and debit cards from an assisted living facility, Celebration Village. The suspect, described as a Black female with dark hair, was captured on Walmart surveillance cameras using the victims' cards. The incident was initially thought to involve staff members, but investigators discovered that the suspect, not employed by Celebration Village, entered the facility wearing scrubs similar to those worn by staff. Authorities suspect there may be additional victims and encourage residents in assisted living facilities to check financial statements for any fraudulent activities. The investigation is ongoing. Contact Acworth Police at 770-974-1232 with information.   STORY 3: Wellstar Doctor Shares Tips as Respiratory Illness Rates Soar COVID-19 cases have surged by approximately 50% in Georgia since last week, with a 75% increase in hospitalizations and a 10% rise in deaths, according to state epidemiologist Dr. Cherie Drenzek. Although the current numbers are lower than the pandemic's peak, Wellstar Health System has reported a significant surge in patient volumes across their facilities. Dr. Danny Branstetter, Medical Director of Infectious Disease and Infection Prevention at Wellstar, advises the use of high-quality N-95 masks in public transportation, getting tested when sick, regular handwashing, social distancing, and emphasizes the importance of flu shots and RSV vaccines for adults over 60. The 30-year, 1% sales tax proposal will fund public transit projects, increasing Cobb's sales tax from 6% to 7%. The tax aims to generate $11 billion over three decades for 108 miles of rapid bus routes, transit centers, and on-demand "microtransit" service. While the county can conduct an education campaign, advocating for or against the referendum is prohibited. Kimley-Horn will assist with the outreach effort, addressing initial concerns raised by some commissioners. Two Republicans opposed the campaign, criticizing the tax proposal. STORY 5: Former Cobb DA Holmes Sworn in as Board of Pardons and Paroles Member Joyette Holmes, former Cobb District Attorney, has been sworn in as a member of the Georgia State Board of Pardons and Paroles. Holmes, the first female and Black district attorney in Cobb County's history, expressed gratitude for the appointment by Governor Brian Kemp. The Board of Pardons and Paroles has the authority to grant paroles, pardons, reprieves, commutations of sentences, and commute death sentences. Holmes replaces Jacqueline Bunn, and she looks forward to contributing to the board's decision-making, emphasizing the importance of public safety in their work. Carr had a documented heart condition and drug addiction. While in the recreation yard, he began having chest pains, was taken to the infirmary, and later experienced another episode. Despite life-saving efforts, he died at Wellstar Kennestone Hospital. The sheriff's office is awaiting autopsy results but has notified the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and will conduct an internal investigation. Carr was arrested on Nov. 1 for drug and weapons possession charges and was the 10th inmate to die in custody since Sheriff Craig Owens took office in 2021, the fifth this year.   STORY 2: Marietta Man Killed Crossing Powder Springs Road A Marietta man, Henry J. Ducre, 58, was fatally struck by a 2015 Mercedes Benz ML350 driven by Antario D. Robertson, 40, while crossing Powder Springs Road near Curtis Lane outside a crosswalk at 4:51 a.m. Ducre was pronounced dead at the scene, and Robertson, driving south in the left lane, was unharmed. The Cobb Police Department is investigating the collision, urging anyone with information to contact investigators at 770-499-3987.     STORY 3: Marietta Schools Eyes Heightened Security at Stadium The Marietta Board of Education is set to discuss new security measures for Northcutt Stadium, including the approval of a $117,000 weapons detection system, Opengate. The system, aimed at enhancing safety during large public events, can quickly screen for guns and large knives. Additionally, the board will review its legislative wish list for the upcoming Georgia General Assembly session, focusing on literacy initiatives. The priorities include increased budgetary support for literacy programs, a statewide literacy assessment for first and second graders, foundational training in structured literacy for teacher certification, and alignment of state pre-K curricula with the science of reading. The initiative, named the Wellstar Healthcare Pathway Program, will focus on introducing students to healthcare careers and building a career pipeline. Wellstar's investment includes $2,500 college scholarships for students pursuing healthcare education. The partnership aims to connect students with Wellstar professionals and cutting-edge technology. During the "State of Education in Cobb" discussion, both Ragsdale and Marietta Superintendent Grant Rivera highlighted challenges like school safety and the social-emotional aspect of students' lives, emphasizing the importance of addressing bullying and social media threats. Rivera praised Marietta's literacy gains, while Ragsdale promoted the Georgia's BEST program in Cobb, a partnership with the University of West Georgia to provide teachers with fully funded graduate education.   STORY 5: Cobb Elections Board Certifies City Elections in 4-1 Vote In a 4-1 vote, the Cobb County Board of Elections certified the Nov. 7 municipal elections. The lone dissenting vote came from Cobb GOP appointee Debbie Fisher, who raised concerns about a six-vote discrepancy between the Georgia Registered Voter Information System (GARViS) and ePulse, a state election management program. The ePulse system failed to sync six votes with GARViS. The issue was manually resolved, but Fisher urged internal testing. Cobb GOP Chair Salleigh Grubbs requested a full hand recount, citing distrust in elections, but the request was denied based on rules and regulations. BREAK: CU of GA STORY 1: City council ok red light camera The Marietta City Council has approved the installation of a new red light camera at the intersection of Cobb Parkway and South Marietta Parkway, adding to the four existing cameras in the city. The next step involves applying for approval from the Georgia Department of Transportation, which may take six to eight mon  ths. Subsequently, the city will collaborate with a contractor for the camera installation, with the entire process expected to take at least a year. Despite a 2020 study suggesting limited safety improvements from red light cameras, the city claims that accidents have decreased at camera-equipped intersections. The fire, believed to have been caused by an electrical issue, began in a bedroom, trapping the victim. Despite his attempts to escape by breaking a bathroom window, he was unsuccessful. Neighbors alerted firefighters who arrived swiftly, with Engine 10 using a ladder to rescue the man through the window. Engine 30 extinguished the fire, and Squad 7 assisted in the rescue. The victim was transported to the hospital, appearing alert and responsive. The entire operation, from rescue to fire extinguishment, took approximately 20 minutes.   STORY 3: Residents shaky on transit tax details at first town hall Cobb County Commissioner Jerica Richardson discussed residents' concerns about the upcoming 2024 transit tax referendum, which involves a proposed 1% sales tax to fund transportation projects, potentially generating $2.8 billion (10-year plan) or $10.9 billion (30-year plan). Residents expressed worries about the tax's impact and density increase due to mass transit. A panel, including transportation officials, addressed questions and concerns at a forum. The event featured peer-to-peer counseling services and connections to detoxification, therapy, legal aid, and other resources for those in need. With the goal of expanding its community presence, the organization aims to secure a physical location to provide a safe space for individuals in recovery. The car show offered awards to exceptional vehicles and featured food trucks, vendors, raffles, silent auctions, and a variety of winners in different car categories   STORY 7: Man shot another man at coin laundry at Pat Mell and Austell roads A shooting occurred at the 24/7 Coin Laundry on Pat Mell Road, involving a 51-year-old man who sustained multiple gunshot wounds. The victim was transported to Wellstar Kennestone Hospital for treatment. Police arrested the suspected shooter, Chike Obi, aged 33, without incident, although charges have not been filed yet. The investigation is ongoing, and detectives from the Crimes Against Persons unit are looking into the case. On December 17, 2022, Acworth police responded to a call about Holcomb, who was naked and attacking people at the Deerfield Lodge. Holcomb also attacked Officer Taneisha Palarche, knocking out one of her teeth and attempting to gouge her eyes out. He had also broken into a motel room and attacked a woman and a man. Holcomb admitted to using methamphetamine before the assault.   STORY 3: Government shutdown threatens to hit Georgians hard With the threat of a government shutdown looming, Georgia Democrats are warning of the potential consequences, including lost paychecks for service members and federal civilian employees, interrupted Social Security and welfare benefits, and closed national parks. The U.S. Senate is debating a stopgap funding bill to prevent the shutdown, but a group of far-right House Republicans, including Georgia Representatives Marjorie Taylor Greene and Andrew Clyde, is blocking efforts to pass a short-term spending bill. Democrats accuse these Republicans of risking Georgians' livelihoods in pursuit of their extreme agenda. In the past five years, this is the highest number of AP exams administered at the school, with 183 high school students taking a total of 403 exams. Impressively, 87% of AP students at MPCS received scores of 3 or higher. Seven subjects achieved a 100% pass rate, while six others had a pass rate of 90% or higher. Commercial : ESOG - Elon   STORY 1 threats   Andrew Thurston Murphy, an Atlanta man, has been charged with intimidation or obstruction of jurors or court officers for allegedly sending threatening emails related to a criminal case. The 39-year-old is accused of emailing threats to the judge, prosecutor, and others involved in the case. The emails contained explicit threats and racially charged language. He was arrested on August 15 and is facing charges including stalking aggravated, 13 counts of terroristic threats, and two counts of intimidation or obstruction of jurors or court officers. Murphy remains in custody on a $1,000 bond. The incident occurred at an address in Marietta, and Murphy's emails contained threats against various individuals linked to the case. ......................……... read more about this at mdjonline.com   Story 2: utensil   Cesar Gonzalez-Rodriguez, a 24-year-old McDonough man, has been charged with possessing a prohibited item for inmates after allegedly sharpening a utensil into a pointed edge while in a holding cell at the Smyrna jail. The incident occurred between August 9 and August 10. Gonzalez-Rodriguez was arrested on August 11 and charged with items prohibited for possession by inmates - warden's authorization. The sharpened utensil, originally meant for meals, was confiscated by Smyrna jail staff. He was released on a $6,500 bond after being booked into the Cobb County Adult Detention Center.   Story 3: pike   Laura Imbach, a 44-year-old Marietta woman, has been charged with second-degree burglary for allegedly breaking into and stealing items from Pike Nurseries. Imbach is also accused of loitering and prowling at the same location on August 7. A security guard identified her from security camera footage as someone resembling the individual involved in previous burglaries. After conducting a search warrant on Imbach's vehicle, stolen solar lamps from Pike Nursery were found. Further investigation revealed that she had taken multiple pots and plants from the nursery on multiple occasions. Another search warrant at her residence uncovered approximately 30 pots and plants with Pike Nursery labels and barcodes. She is accused of driving a white Volvo XC60 unsafely and failing to maintain her lane on August 9 on Franklin Gateway. Hughley also allegedly ran red lights and reversed her vehicle into a police officer's patrol car when attempting to flee from the police. She showed signs of impairment, including slurred speech and confusion, and resisted arrest, striking an officer and requiring physical force to be handcuffed. After being detained, she exhibited strange behavior during a urine test. Hughley faces charges including failure to maintain lane, traffic control violations, obstruction, fleeing or attempting to elude, and DUI - drugs. She is in custody on a $5,000 bond.     STORY 5: burn   Wellstar Health System's inpatient burn unit at Wellstar Cobb Hospital, established a decade ago, has grown to encompass 16 beds and around 70 staff. The burn center, one of only three in the state, provides specialized care for patients with burns and soft tissue injuries. It offers comprehensive medical and surgical treatment to help patients recover and regain functionality. The center is planning to expand by adding eight more beds. The burn unit employs innovative treatments, such as using virtual reality headsets combined with pain medication for patients in pain. Despite his lack of experience, he earned an all-county honorable mention in his senior year, recording 62 tackles and three sacks. He walked on at Kennesaw State University and has since made significant progress. As the new season approaches, Nwoha is on top of the depth chart and poised to make his first collegiate start. He's focused on improving his fundamentals and technique while adjusting to the college game's intensity. Nwoha, a cyber security major, is excited to showcase his effort and secure a consistent spot in the defensive rotation.   Story 8: Title   Mount Paran Christian secured their third consecutive Cobb County volleyball championship by defeating Hillgrove in a best-of-five championship match. After sweeping through earlier matches, Mount Paran faced a challenge from Hillgrove in the finals. After winning the first set, Hillgrove came back to win the second, forcing a decisive third set. Mount Paran ultimately prevailed with a 15-10 win, aided by Alexis Stubbs' five-point serving run. Key players for Mount Paran included Kaitlyn Moran, Sarah Schwartz, Shelby Harris, and Alexis Stubbs. The victory marked Mount Paran's sixth consecutive win and seventh win in their last eight matches. Hillgrove's 11-match winning streak was broken with this championship loss. North Cobb and Allatoona tied for third place in the tournament.   Story 9: Tie   In a game against Calhoun, Claire Lussier of Mount Paran Christian pitched six innings, allowing six hits and recording strikeouts, resulting in a 2-2 tie. Shelby Brown contributed a hit and drove in both runs for the Eagles. Other players like Maddie Penley, Shayna Suttles, Marian Collins, and Ruby Collins also had hits. Commercial : CUofGA - Elon   STORY 1 case   Three men, Maykel Olides Hernandez, Javier Guerra-Morales, and Giorge Navea, have been arrested and charged with first-degree burglary for their involvement in a jewelry store burglary in Canton where over $1 million worth of merchandise was stolen. The burglary involved cutting a hole in the roof of Kay Jewelers in January. The suspects are also suspected in a similar case in Marietta, as per the Forsyth County Sheriff's Office. Hernandez, Guerra-Morales, and Navea were arrested in different locations and are awaiting extradition. Authorities believe the men are part of an international theft ring and are linked to burglary attempts in Alpharetta and Knoxville. ......................……... read more about this at mdjonline.com   Story 2: crash   Aaron Andre Brooks, a Woodstock resident, has been arrested in connection with a fatal crash near Sprayberry High School earlier this year. Cobb police accuse Brooks of causing a collision that resulted in the death of Zhi Zhang. The incident occurred on April 29 when Brooks was allegedly driving his 2012 Jeep Liberty at approximately 94 mph, almost 50 mph over the speed limit. He lost control of the vehicle, crossed into oncoming traffic, and collided with Zhang's Chevrolet Colorado in Cobb County. Zhang, the other driver, passed away from crash-related injuries on June 3. Brooks faces charges including first-degree vehicular homicide, speeding, reckless driving, and failure to maintain lanes. He is in custody at the Cobb County Adult Detention Center without bond.   Story 3: fleeing   Jimmy Clyde Edwards, a Mableton resident, has been charged with reckless driving and other offenses after allegedly fleeing from police on his motorcycle. The incident occurred when officers attempted to stop Edwards for not having a tag on his 1998 Suzuki 600 motorcycle on August 10th. Instead of complying, Edwards reportedly sped away, leading police on a chase through residential streets, exceeding 65 mph and running stop signs. Edwards eventually crashed the motorcycle off-road and attempted to escape on foot. Authorities found about 4 grams of suspected methamphetamine in his possession. Edwards had multiple suspensions on his driver's license and lacked registration, tag, and insurance for the motorcycle. He faces a range of charges including fleeing/attempting to elude, possession, reckless driving, and more. The charges stem from an incident that occurred on May 6, 2022, at a residence in east Cobb. The Cobb County Police Department issued an arrest warrant for Hanson, who was taken into custody on August 15 and is currently held at the Cobb County Adult Detention Center. He is being held without bond.   STORY 5: pipeline   To address the national nursing shortage, Wellstar Health System, based in Marietta, is actively recruiting students through high school healthcare camps and job fairs. The camps, hosted at universities such as Kennesaw State, Mercer, and Southern Crescent Technical College, provide students with opportunities to learn from medical professionals and gain insights into potential career paths. The initiative aims to combat the nursing shortage exacerbated by factors like burnout and stress due to the pandemic. Wellstar's efforts to attract and retain nurses include concierge services, daycare support, and flexible scheduling. The system employs around 7,300 nurses across its facilities. Other medical institutions in the area are also taking steps to recruit nurses.   Story 6: 526   A grant of $526,000 has been awarded to enhance trails within the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area (CRNRA). The funding has been provided by the Cathy D. Perry Trust to support green spaces, with the trust's trustee, Scott Olsen, designating the public land along the Chattahoochee River as the recipient. This generous donation, the largest in the Chattahoochee National Park Conservancy's ten-year history, will be utilized to improve, repair, and in some cases, reroute the trail systems in CRNRA. The area, spanning 48 miles in metro Atlanta and featuring over 66 miles of trails, is maintained by the Conservancy. This donation will significantly aid in the park's maintenance and enhancement efforts.   We'll be back in a moment   Break: Powers - Drake- Dayco   Story 7: 600   Marietta's football program achieved a significant milestone by becoming the first team in Cobb County to reach 600 all-time wins. The Blue Devils secured their 600th victory with a 20-19 overtime win against West Forsyth. The program's history dates back to its first win in 1914 against Decatur. Marietta is now the 23rd school in the state to reach this achievement. The team's coach, Richard Morgan, expressed pride in the accomplishment and the unity the win brought to the players. The milestone victory was sealed in overtime when West Forsyth's unsuccessful 2-point conversion attempt allowed Marietta to secure the win.   Story 8: walton   The Walton Raiders, ranked fourth, achieved a record-setting victory of 63-15 against Brookwood. This win marked the highest point total for Walton in a single game, surpassing the previous record of 59 points. The heat index might surpass 100 due to high humidity. Cherokee County anticipates highs of 93 to 96 degrees through the week. A heat advisory was in effect for parts of west and central Georgia. MUST Ministries has opened a cooling center in Marietta to offer relief, operating from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. when temperatures hit 90 or higher. The health department suggests wearing light clothing, staying in air-conditioned places, avoiding hot meals, and limiting outdoor activities.   Story 3: carr   Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr is urging a federal judge to reconsider a preliminary injunction that blocked a law limiting medical care for transgender minors. Carr's motion, filed in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Georgia, references a recent U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruling that lifted a similar preliminary injunction in Alabama. The injunction in question was issued in response to a challenge against Senate Bill 140, which prohibits hormone replacement therapy for gender dysphoria treatment in adolescents. The judge ruled that the law violates transgender minors' rights under the 14th Amendment. This will raise the fee from $4 to $5 per month for each equivalent residential unit. The change is aimed at generating revenue for annual replacements of stormwater infrastructure. The fee is included in property owners' tax bills. Additionally, the council unanimously voted to submit the city's comprehensive plan to the Atlanta Regional Commission and the Department of Community Affairs for review. There's a proposal to change the development character area map, allowing commercial use with residential areas. The council also approved adjustments to park rental fees and a liquor store application. A park was named in honor of a former council member, Karen Johnson Barnett, who passed away in 2021.   Story 5: pta   Cherokee County School District (CCSD) educators and volunteers have received recognition from the PTA with state and regional awards. Among the winners, Liberty Elementary School Nurse Amanda Fox was honored as an Outstanding School Nurse at the District 13 PTA level, then proceeded to win the statewide award from the Georgia PTA. Additionally, CCSD teachers, principals, and school PTAs received various awards for their exceptional contributions, professionalism, partnerships, and community engagement. Superintendent Brian Hightower expressed his gratitude for the PTA's continuous support and the dedication of the honorees. The winners will be recognized by the Cherokee County School Board in September.   Story 6: bookmark   Violet Paul, an eighth-grade student from Cherokee County's E.T. Booth Middle School, has won the top prize of $100 in the 2023 Georgia Farm Bureau Middle School Bookmark Contest. Her entry was recognized as the best in GFB's First District, encompassing 15 counties in northwest Georgia. The contest, aimed at encouraging students to explore agriculture and create artwork inspired by their learning, is sponsored by Georgia Farm Bureau. On August 3rd, a Woodstock officer pursued a speeding vehicle that made unsafe lane changes on I-575. Several citizens, including Jaxson Rupert and Justin Shubert, helped locate the suspect within an apartment complex. Construction inspector James Stokes assisted in the pursuit by providing transportation and support. Off-duty Cobb County Police Department Lt. Lee Turman aided the Woodstock officer and citizen Stokes. Lastly, Henry Higgins helped stop the suspect, Bailey Avey, from fleeing before officers arrived. Their courageous and determined actions ensured the suspect's swift apprehension, earning them recognition from the Woodstock Police Chief Robert Jones during the city council meeting.   Story 9:  apartments   Novare Group, Batson-Cook Development Co., and PointOne Holdings are collaborating on a new apartment complex project in southwest Cherokee County near Acworth. Novare Group's President and CEO, Jim Borders, expressed pride in the successful collaboration and commitment to creating a development that aligns with the area's vision and exceeds residents' expectations. Few CDI professionals are rising as fast as Faisal Hussain, Executive Director of CDI at Wellstar Health System in Georgia. Fewer still have come as far as he has, both literally and figuratively. A foreign medical graduate and native of Pakistan, Hussain has risen up through the ranks in a remarkable career in healthcare. In his current role he is responsible for overseeing the CDI strategy and operations for the entire Wellstar health system, comprised of nine hospitals and more than 300 medical offices, as well as cancer centers, rehabilitation centers, hospice facilities, and urgent care locations. Bob Prillaman, former executive of Caraustar Industries and philanthropist, passed away at the age of 90. Prillaman made an indelible impact on Cobb County through his philanthropy and activism. He played a key role in the growth of Wellstar Health System in the region and in the partnership between Wellstar and Kennesaw State University. Prillaman also wrote about healthcare issues for his community in a November MDJ guest column, encouraging collaboration among local hospitals, government, and community members. Prillaman was born into poverty in Bassett, Virginia, and worked his way up the ranks in the paper industry. He will be remembered for his kindness, thoughtfulness, and loyalty as a friend. A motorcyclist named Felix Witt was injured in a crash in east Cobb on Monday night. The incident took place around 6:10 pm when Witt's black 2022 KTR 390 motorcycle collided with a white 2017 Mazda CX5 driven by Sandra Craine. Craine attempted a U-turn at the intersection, in front of the motorcycle, which led to the collision. Witt was ejected from his motorcycle and was taken to Wellstar Kennestone Hospital for non-life-threatening injuries. Craine, who is 76 years old, was not hurt. The investigation is ongoing, and anyone with information is urged to contact Cobb police. Georgia Governor Brian Kemp spoke to the Cobb Chamber of Commerce, touting the state's economy and fiscal conservatism. Kemp pointed to the state's low unemployment rate, economic development successes, and balanced budget. With a budget surplus of over $6 billion, the state returned funds to taxpayers through state income tax rebates and property tax relief. Kemp highlighted the state's record of being named the best state to do business for nine years in a row and announced roughly 150,000 new jobs and $60 billion of new investment since he took office. The governor also mentioned legislative measures passed, such as the Safe School Act, teacher pay raises, and combating human trafficking. The Kennesaw Downtown Development Authority and the Kennesaw Downtown Merchants Association have announced the third annual First Friday Concert Series in downtown Kennesaw. The series will run from May to October, with no concert in July. The community is invited to stroll through the historic downtown area and enjoy an evening of shopping, dining, and live music from 7 to 9:30 p.m. at the Pedestrian Underpass/Tunnel Plaza off Main Street. VIP Tables are available for reservation, which include a six-foot table with a tablecloth, centerpiece, and special gift, and can seat six individuals. The lineup includes bands such as 293 Band, The GlowBand- an Ealges tribute, Run Katie Run, Brotherhood-a Doobie Brothers tribute, and Emerald Empire Band. Two high school basketball teams from Cobb County finished in the top 25 of the final national polls. Wheeler, the Class 7A state champion, ranked 24th in ESPN's final top 25. Kell, the Class 5A state champion, ranked 20th in USA Today's poll. Wheeler went 27-7 and defeated opponents by an average of 14 points. Kell went 28-2 and won their games by an average of 34 points in the final 15 games of the season. Both teams played a national schedule and won their state championships, while featuring rosters full of future college stars. Kennesaw State has found their new basketball coach, and he's coming from an SEC power.   The five newest graduates of the Cobb County Drug Treatment Court were recently celebrated by judges, elected officials, community members, court staff, attorneys, family members, and friends. The program, which lasts 18-24 months, provides an alternative to incarceration for individuals with substance use disorders. The program combines close supervision, evidence-based treatment, and recovery support to teach offenders to be productive members of the community. The graduates shared their success stories and expressed hope and excitement for their future. The program is presided over by Superior Court Judge Kimberly A. Childs, and attended by other elected officials, including the District Attorney, Commissioner, and Clerk of Superior Court. The Harrison girls' soccer team won their eighth straight game with a 4-0 victory over South Gwinnett in the Class AAAAAAAA state playoffs. Caroline Shaw had a goal and an assist, and Addie Watt, Courtney Cangialosi, and Sydney Snow all scored. In other Cobb County action, Walton won 3-0 against West Forsyth, Kennesaw Mountain lost 3-0 to Denmark, and Brookwood beat Hillgrove 1-0. Harrison (13-3-1) will face the winner of Camden County and East Coweta in Round 2 on Monday, and Walton will host the winner of Meadowcreek and Buford on Monday. Sex trafficking is ubiquitous, even though many people fail to notice it. That is why the Rotary Club of North Cobb hosted “The Truth About Sex Trafficking In Our Community,” a forum this week that brought together Cobb leaders, concerned citizens and groups combating sex trafficking in the county and across Georgia. North Cobb Rotary member Hicks Malonson is an ambassador for Rescuing Hope, a Marietta-based nonprofit fighting sex trafficking through educational programming and support for survivors. Human trafficking has gained greater attention in Georgia since 2019, when Governor Brian Kemp established the Georgians for Refuge, Action, Compassion, and Education Commission, chaired by his wife, Georgia first lady Marty Kemp. The commission, composed of public officials, experts on human trafficking, and representatives from law enforcement and advocacy groups, is tasked with combating human trafficking in the state. Georgia's heightened focus on the issue extends to law enforcement agencies. Georgia Assistant Attorney General Kaitlyn Salinas works for Georgia's statewide Human Trafficking Prosecution Unit, created in 2019 as the first of its kind in the U.S. Salinas, speaking at the forum, noted that it is far less likely nowadays for traffickers to walk through an airport or hotel with large quantities of cocaine, but it is much easier for them to walk through either with a young person they are trafficking. Susan Norris, the executive director of Rescuing Hope and a member of the GRACE commission, moderated a panel of local “first responders” to human trafficking at Tuesday's forum. Ana Murphy, the school social work supervisor for the Cobb County School District, said it is difficult to identify whether a student is being trafficked. She noted it is “a major red flag for us” when students are frequently absent from school, a trend that worsened with the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Norris said one study showed a 40% jump in trafficking during the pandemic because students were online, not only in class, but socializing with other students and, potentially, traffickers. Norris encouraged attendees to become involved in volunteering for Rescuing Hope and other anti-trafficking organizations at the forum, like Out of Darkness (www.outofdarkness.org), Wellspring Living (www.wellspringliving.org) and The Table on Delk (www.thetableondelk.org).  More information about Rescuing Hope can be found at www.rescuinghope.com. Kennesaw State University's Wellstar School of Nursing has received a federal grant to teach graduate students how to help patients break increasingly deadly opioid addictions. Assistant professor of nursing Kathy Barnett and Wellstar School of Nursing Associate Director of Graduate Programs Susan Beidler teamed to earn the nearly $729,000 grant, which comes from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, a subsidiary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Barnett and Beidler will implement curricular revisions in the KSU Masters of Science in Nursing programs that address decreasing stigma and increasing access to early interventions for substance use disorders. According to data from the Georgia Department of Public Health, drug overdose deaths increased by 61% from 2019 to 2021, and fentanyl-involved overdose deaths increased by 230%, illustrating the urgent need for more medical training in helping people with opioid addiction. Opioids include many prescription pain medicines, fentanyl and the illegal drug heroin. In a theatrical, winding speech interlaced with musical tie-ins and clips from “Back to the Future,” Mayor Derek Easterling recapped his seven years in office before a crowd of civic and business leaders this week. Easterling, first elected in 2015, was reelected without opposition in 2019. This year marks the final year of his second term. The mayor told the MDJ after speaking that he intends to run for a third term this November. Ever the showman, Easterling emerged ahead of his speech to the Kennesaw Business Association to the tune of “Rockstar” by Nickelback, carrying a guitar and clad in jeans, cowboy boots and a leather jacket. With his back to the crowd, the speakers then began to blare the opening riff of “Back in Black” by AC/DC as Easterling pretended to play guitar. The mayor then shook his head and yelled for the music to stop. The same sequence then played out with Ozzy Osbourne's “Crazy Train,” and Guns N' Roses' “Sweet Child O' Mine.” Finally, City Manager Jeff Drobney, dressed as Doc Brown from “Back to the Future,” yelled out “Mayor, you've got to get back to the future.” Easterling then began speaking. In his State of the City address, Easterling ticked through a laundry list of developments the city has seen during his time in office, recapping improvements to parks, roads and other infrastructure; new businesses and housing developments; changes to city services and systems; and more. Those developments were listed chronologically, and as the mayor started speaking about a new year, a “Back to the Future” clip would be played on the screen. To accompany the theme, the city also procured a DMC DeLorean, which was parked outside the Adams Park Recreation Center, where Easterling spoke.  Easterling said some of the things the city can look forward to this year are the opening of the Depot Park amphitheater, progress on a new public safety center, the start of a Cherokee Street streetscape project, improvements to Ben King Road and more. McEachern pulled away early and never looked back as the Indians made the short trip to defeated archrival Hillgrove 68-57 in Tuesday's Region 3 6A opener. McEachern reversed an early Hillgrove advantage and took control of the game with an 18-0 run that began late in the first quarter and lasted until midway through the second quarter. The Indians went on to outscore the Hawks 42-20 through the second and third quarters combined. Though the win gave McEachern an early leg up in the region standings, for coach Tremayne Anchrum Sr., and his players, getting the win over their crosstown rival was more significant. Moses Hipps scored 15 points and Ace Bailey added 14 points to lead McEachern. McEachern went on to outscore Hillgrove 23-11 in the second quarter to take a 40-32 halftime lead, then outscored the Hawks 19-9 in the third quarter to widen its advantage to 59-41. Hillgrove did narrow the gap a little bit at the end, but the Hawks were only able to get as close as 10 points — 61-51 — with 5:00 remaining in the game. The Marietta Board of Education voted unanimously this week to elect Kerry Minervini of Ward 6 as the chair for another year. Minervini, a real estate agent who was first elected in 2017, also served as chair last year. Unlike the Cobb County Board of Education, Marietta school board members can serve consecutive terms as chair. The board also unanimously elected Ward 1's Jeff DeJarnett as vice chair. DeJarnett replaces Jason Waters of Ward 2 in the role. Board attorney Clem Doyle distributed index cards to the board members, each of whom privately wrote down their nomination for chair and vice chair. Doyle then announced the results — seven nominations for Minervini for chair, seven nominations for DeJarnett as vice chair. Votes were then held to approve both appointments. The chair and vice chair elections stand in contrast to those of the Cobb school board last week, where members split along party lines, with the Republican majority winning out. Marietta's school board is nonpartisan. The Marietta board elected its leaders at the top of its first work session of the year. In other action, the board reviewed several items it will vote on at its Jan. 17 meeting.  South Cobb welcomed a new community garden this week — or, at least, the beginnings of one. A coalition of agricultural, gardening, and healthcare groups gathered off Powder Springs Road at the Cobb County Farm Bureau offices. There, partners broke ground on a garden that's intended to help out with food insecurity and healthier living. The Wellness Garden, as it will be known, so far is simply a lawn next to the Farm Bureau with a few posts sunk for a fence. But it will one day feature 15 garden beds — each 12 feet by four feet — along with a pollinator garden and hoop house. Unlike some community gardens, which are merely shared spaces for residents to grow their own produce, the Wellness Garden will be geared specifically toward providing food to those in need and spreading the word on how to use locally-grown produce. To that end, volunteers alongside nutritionists from Wellstar Health System — one of the partners in the venture — will be holding classes in the Farm Bureau offices on healthy cooking and eating. Other partners include the Cobb County Conservation District, the Master Gardener Volunteers of Cobb County, and Cobb EMC, which is helping to financially support the effort. Renae Lemon, one of the master gardeners, has been involved in several community gardens throughout the county including one which opened in Acworth this summer. A federal judge has heard arguments on whether to appoint an outside legal expert to review government records seized by the FBI last month in a search of former President Donald Trump's Florida home. There was no immediate ruling after arguments Thursday. Lawyers for Trump say the appointment of a special master is necessary to ensure an independent inspection of the documents. The Justice Department says an appointment is unwarranted because investigators have completed their review of potentially privileged records. Chicago officials say 75 immigrants have arrived in the city on buses from Texas, as part of a border policy by Texas Gov. Greg Abbott. Mayor Lori Lightfoot's office confirmed that the migrants arrived Wednesday night and that the city has welcomed them and will make sure they receive shelter and food.  About 2 in 10 Americans say they've had a personal experience with gun violence or a connection to someone who experienced it.
