Shame, guilt, fear…these are just some of the emotions that unconsciously come up for people when they think about money. Our feelings about money are so rooted in our formative years. Today on the podcast, Aspiriant partners Sandi Bragar and Cammie Doder are encouraging us to have more candid conversations about money. Lots of startups are identified with their founders, and vice versa. But to truly thrive, companies need a plan for the unexpected—and the eventual expected—departure of the founder. She helps clients navigate and build their wealth in line with their goals and values. As the first in her family born in America, she did not have a large scope of financial literacy beyond saving and frugality. In high school, she was introduced to the power of financial literacy and planning by her then-boss who hosted financial literacy courses at the YMCA Women's Shelter. Understanding the power of this knowledge, she changed her career path from health sciences, where she intended to help people medically, to become a CFP® practitioner and help people financially. Originally from San Diego, California, she left her comfort zone when she relocated to New York to marry the love of her life. She doesn't look back – she loves everything New York has to offer and is a true New Yorker now! As an avid fan of the arts and a musician herself, she enjoys all the beauty, culture and all art forms that the city has to offer. She loves attending Broadway shows, the Metropolitan Opera House, the Candlelight classical music concerts and hearing all sorts of amazing musicians and singers throughout the city. For fun, Victoria plays the piano, composes music, practices yoga and enjoys exploring new places with her husband. As a certified financial planner, Victoria reveals some misconceptions she thinks a lot of us have when it comes to money and tips on for millennials when it comes to budgeting, saving and investing. She also reveals her career highlights and lows and ends the episode talking about the importance of self care and tending to your needs before others. I'm not a fan of loosely using the term "pioneer". Calling Tim Kochis a pioneer in the wealth management industry, however, is pretty darn accurate. He co-founded Kochis, Fitz, Tracy, Fitzhugh & Gott in 1991, and built a multi-billion dollar RIA and organic growth machine. 17 years later, Tim engineered his own succession when he merged with another RIA, renamed the firm Aspiriant, and then resigned, as planned, in 2012. Past performance does not guarantee future results. Tim's past performance, and the wisdom he gained as one of the first ultra-successful RIAs, DOES guarantee that our listeners will learn a few things from this Pioneer on the 11th episode of "Can You Hold My Attention?"

We break new ground today on the podcast as we talk about FOMO, catching falling knives, Uncle Warren and chewing glass. My guest today is John Allen, CFA the Chief Investment Officer at Aspirant. We also hit on some other great concepts such as why it is important to understand vs. observe what your investment managers are doing, thoughts on the impact of investment bubbles in the short, medium and long term. I also have a new word for my vocabulary, conflate, John makes some insightful observations about how that term applies to risk and return for some people which dovetails nicely into some other thoughts on whether some traditional guidance 401(k) participants get, still makes sense. Finally, John makes some not so rosy predictions for what the next seven to ten years could look like for investors and why that matters to 401(k) plans and participants.
