His work focuses generally on strategic marketing and strategic decision making especially as it relates to what universities can do for industry. He has published over 60 research articles in outlets including Food Policy, Journal of Business Venturing Insights, and the American Journal of Agricultural Economics. Before Purdue, he worked as an ag economist with the University of Arkansas, and before that at Michigan State University. His insights have been featured in popular press outlets, including the New York Times, TIME Magazine, CNBC, CNN, USA Today, Fast Company, and Popular Science. And now the Future of Agriculture podcast. This episode has been a long time in the making. I've known Trey, at least from a distance for years. He almost came on the show earlier this year, but then was offered his dream job to move from Arkansas to Purdue so we put it on hold until now. In addition to being an ag nerd, I've always had an interest in economics, specifically what drives markets and what drives behavior. I read Freakonomics years ago and am a listener to podcasts like Planet Money. So why it took me so long to realize that what i”m trying to do here with the Future of Agriculture is bring together my science and tech nerdiness with my business nerdiness is beyond me. When I say that this show is really at the core about ag economics, a lot of you long time listeners are probably saying “DUH!”, but to be honest I never consciously thought of it that way. I share all this with you because I'm hoping this episode is just the start of featuring many other economists. No, i”m not going to stop covering agtech or sustainability or science or the other topics we we cover here on the show. But I do want to make a concerted effort to highlight the interesting work our countries 2,000+ ag economists are doing. And this episode with Trey is a great place to start.

Are you an accidental agency owner? Most of us are! That is why it's important to continually evolve in order to grow your digital agency. Can you identify the milestones that have gotten you where you are? What are the biggest challenges you've had to face? As an agency owner, it's important to stay inspired and stay the course on the path we're paving for ourselves. Today's guest took inspiration from various industry leaders to start his agency and learn how to grow from just an owner to a CEO. He's been in the agency world for over ten years and has had to reinvent a few times to keep up with new challenges. He shares the various challenges he's faced over different stages of his agency's journey and the milestones that helped him keep going. Andrew Gottlieb is the founder and CEO of No Typical Moments, a digital marketing agency that works exclusively with purpose-driven social impact-focused businesses. His agency acts as a Fractional CMO working executing social media campaigns for online education. His agency handles everything from media buying to Instagram, Facebook, and Google campaigns, and backend email marketing solutions for some of the world's thought leaders. In this episode, we'll discuss: Evolving the agency's service offering to keep up with market changes. The importance of diversifying your lead gen source. Get to know your Smart Agency Guest Host: Dr. Jeremy Weisz is the co-founder of Rise25, an agency that helps companies launch and run podcasts profitably. He followed Jason's podcast and eventually joined the mastermind and has been a guest on the podcast before. Today, he's helping Jason bring something new to the Smart Agency podcast audience by interviewing a special guest and getting a new perspective to the show.   Becoming an Accidental Agency Owner with Inspiration and a Mastermind In 2010, Andrew was a senior in college applying for and getting rejected from any job he could find. He had majored in Managerial Economics and had done everything right. However, it didn't work out as expected so he had to sit down and reflect on his next move. He was referred to David Siteman Garland's podcast, where he described a lifestyle working from the beach in Puerto Rico while making six figures. That's when Andrew set out to get himself to that point and developed the idea for his agency, No Typical Moments. It turned out that the formula for building his ideal business included things he greatly enjoyed: marketing and new technologies. It took him 18 months to really develop the concept of his agency. Meanwhile, he worked odd jobs, did a couple more internships, and finally found a full-time job with a minor league baseball team. In his agency journey, Andrew found many role models like David, Gary Vaynerchuck, Jesse Itzler, and more. They were an inspiration throughout building and growing his agency in different ways. They helped him see the importance of taking advice from someone who already walked that same path.  He also credits involvement in a mastermind is a fundamental part of going from agency owner to Agency CEO. What Milestones Propel Agency Growth? Andrew officially started his agency in 2012 with six months' worth of savings and the plan to either duplicate his income in those six months or find another job. After 90 days of endless meetings, he hit his first big milestone: finding a paying client. From there, his growth was marked by milestones like meeting the agency's first big client and making some key hires. Around 2013, Andrew met a sales expert who joined the agency and ended up being an important part of its growth. Having someone besides him to help with client work and sales made a big difference. As he started delegating the client work, they were also able to take on more clients. Shortly after that, their next big client was the Pittsburg Marathon, which was another big moment for the agency. Evolving the Agency's Service Offering with Market Changes Originally, the agency offered organic social media marketing, which included Twitter and LinkedIn. However, over the years he's had to adapt to keep the business going. With time, Andrew realized there wasn't a clear ROI he could break down for clients. There wasn't a clear way to explain what those campaigns would do for their business. This was back when social media wasn't what it is today. He realized doing paid ads lend to a more straightforward conversation. ROI is clearer with ads and it's a cleaner business case to sell to clients. This is what inspired a change in their service offering. Later on, their offer evolved again to Facebook ads campaigns, which actually became pretty much their only service offer. Everyone was using Facebook and it worked for the agency. However, the big wake-up call came when iOS 14 changed everything. As most know, this made Facebook advertising very challenging and clients started to pull out. Those who weren't immediately taken aback saw their ROI go down pretty quickly. Luckily, Andrew and his team had already been thinking about broadening their offering. They had their eyes on doing YouTube, LinkedIn, and Google advertising. Moreover, he realized some clients were more in need of thought leadership and strategic direction than advertising. Hence, they searched for a Fractional CMO who could point these clients in the right direction so the ad campaigns would have a better chance of success. The Importance of Diversifying Your Lead Gen Source Usually, clients defer to Andrew's agency to get clear on their next best step in digital marketing. At some point, the easy answer was Facebook Ads. With it, you could generate revenue at the snap of your fingers. The game has changed, however. It's now very important to be clear on where the business is at in its maturity to develop the right strategy. When a client brings on their team, they'll help them with anything from email marketing, landing pages, copywriting, media buying on any major platform, or tech integration. They can also help manage employees, manage vendor relationships, contractors, and whatever clients require from a CMO. When his agency changed course to a more full-service offering, he needed to get clients to understand it was a good moment to diversify their lead gen sources. If their entire campaigns hinged on Facebook, they will likely have issues in the future. The storm from iOS 14 combined with other difficult moments for the platform finally helped some clients see the light. Some companies had spent millions in Facebook ads only for their accounts to be banned out of nowhere. Now they had a need to spend on Google and YouTube to get to a million in spending. For the longest time, it seemed like Facebook could not fail. But, in that moment it became much easier to explain the importance of diversifying. 3 Biggest Challenges He's Faced at Different Stages of His Agency Journey For Andrew, the challenges presented by building a digital agency have changed depending on the stage of the agency's growth. The mental challenge of entrepreneurship. As a 22-year-old starting a business, his friends went the more traditional route and had high-paying jobs. Their path offered more of a clear trajectory whereas he entered entrepreneur which is the land of the unknown. The shame and embarrassment of not having that clarity affected his confidence. It also affected his social life, since he had to pour all his resources into the business. He couldn't afford to go out and risk spending money he would need for the agency. Growing the agency beyond the owner. Finding the right people to continue to grow the agency has been more challenging than he expected. He was lucky with his two first hires, who are actually still with him years later. However, he made a series of bad hires as the agency grew. He was not clear on the expectation for each role and needed to hand over control. Those first mistakes ruined some relationships for him. Staying inspired to grow. More recently, Andrew's big challenge has been continuing to be inspired to grow and build after ten years. After years of weathering different storms like the pandemic and changes to his offering, it is time to reinvent again. Do You Want to Transform Your Agency from a Liability to an Asset? If you want to be around amazing agency owners that can see what you may not be able to see and help you grow your agency, go to Agency Mastery 360.  Our agency growth program helps you take a 360-degree view of your agency and gain mastery of the 3 pillar systems (attract, convert, scale) so you can create predictability, wealth, and freedom.

If you got one more resident for an assisted living or a memory care unit, that one extra unit might necessitate additional staff members based on the staffing ratio that is required by state law. Your revenue might go up, but with the increased staffing ratio, your operating margin might go down. It's definitely one unique component that not everybody might understand how to underwrite a senior living deal.” SUMMARY OF BUSINESS:LLOYD JONES has become a global real estate investment firm with subsidiaries in development, construction, and senior living operations. Its focus is senior housing, multifamily, and most recently the hospitality industry. Its investment partners include institutions, family offices, and its own principals. And now, through its new crowdfunding platform, private investors can participate in the firm's institutional-quality acquisitions.   ABOUT THE WESTSIDE INVESTORS NETWORK   The Westside Investors Network is your community for investing knowledge for growth. Peter shares when Agile and Stage-Gate are appropriate and why Waterfall is not Stage-Gate. He identifies the most significant risks to projects. Peter also argues why choosing a methodology or system is less important than doing them right and following the rules. "Do not spread your resources and energies on too many things. Focus on the best things, get them through your system fast, and get to market fast." - Peter Fürst This week on Innovation Talks: The five i's of innovation: innovation systems, innovation projects, ideation, innovation strategy, and innovation culture How the Stage-Gate process has evolved over the last 15 years Why the structure and risk management system with gating and portfolio management are needed to decide which project to stop or do The strengths of Agile and when it is not the correct project management method How to leverage the Spiral Model during development and the role of education in project launch The risks to projects that do not have enough focus on resources Resources Mentioned: Book: Winning at New Products: Creating Value Through Innovation by Robert Cooper Connect with Peter Fürst: Five i's Innovation Consulting Qualify Your Innovation Peter Fürst on LinkedIn Peter Fürst on Twitter This Podcast is brought to you by Sopheon Thanks for tuning into this week's episode of Innovation Talks. The key to monetizing your podcast is determining exactly what your audience wants. Monetization is not built by getting your audience to buy what you have to sell. It is all about offering exactly what they want and are willing and able to pay to acquire. One of the most difficult classes I took while getting my Masters in Business Administration was Managerial Economics. In that class, we learned all of the nuances that affected the economics of business. At the end of the day, it still came down to supply and demand. At what price is the seller willing and able to offer the product or service? At what point does that line intersect the point at which the buyer is willing and able to buy the product or service being offered? That is what business is all about. If you are offering something that nobody wants, you'll find it difficult to sell anything. MARKET RESEARCH To figure out if your listners want what you have, ask them. Recruit a few dozen people in your niche and actually talk with them. Ask them about their struggles and pains. Where do they need help? Talk to them about their goals, dreams and ambitions. What do they need to overcome those struggles? If you would like some help on the questions, download my Listener Development worksheet at www.PodcastTalentCoach.com/listener. You don't need to ask every question on that worksheet. Ask enough to get a good idea of what your listener needs. Once you have the questions, recruit some participants. Send an e-mail to your list. Post on social media. Direct message people. Reach out multiple times. I would say something like, "I am working on a program that will help podcasters. Would you be willing to jump on a call with me for about 20 minutes and help me with some research?" Shoot for 20 participants. When you get on the call, ask them your questions. I would start with, "When it comes to podcasting, where are you struggling most?" Find the commonalities with your listeners. Most of mine tell me they struggle growing their audience and making money with their show. That's why I created the Audience Explosion Blueprint. This program helps them with exactly what they need. I know, because they told me. This is how you grow your business. I built the course with the elements they told me they wanted. I take their hand and walk them through every step of the way, just like they requested. Every element in the program was suggested by my market research. They helped me build it. You can see the details on the Audience Explosion Blueprint at www.PodcastTalentCoach.com/audience. YOUR BUSINESS OFFER When your listeners help you build your program, it is much easier to get them to buy it. They told you exactly what it should include. We often make it business more difficult than it needs to be. There is often the desire to put everything we know into one course. The problem is the fact that your audience doesn't want every answer. Your listener wants to solve one pressing problem. Help them do that. You will only know what to offer when you listen to your audience. Let them help you build your business. INTERVIEW Today, we talk with Aaron Wilbur of the Glass and Out podcast. It is a podcast for hockey coaches. Aaron interviews coaches. He also has a conference and membership site that has now become his full-time job and business. Aaron Wilbur is the Founder and CEO of the Coaches Site, an online resource for hockey coaches, as well as the host of the Glass & Out podcast. The Coaches Site was created to provide the game's top coaches a platform to share their experience and expertise with a global audience of coaches. As the host of the Glass & Out podcast, Aaron is fortunate to have weekly conversations with some of the top leaders and trailblazers in hockey, highlighting the origins of their careers, challenges overcome, triumphs and their insights into how coaches can provide an enhanced development opportunity for their players. During our conversation, we talk about which came first … the podcast, the membership site or the conference. We get into the origin of each. Aaron shares how the podcast helps drive the business and how he turned it into his full-time gig. He also tells us about his crazy infatuation with Nick Saban and Alabama football. You will definitely get a few nuggets from this business case study. It just proves you don't need to teach online business or funnels in order to monetize your podcast. A big thanks to Aaron Wilbur for joining us on the show. If you want to check out the Glass & Out Podcast or see what his membership site is all about, visit him at www.TheCoachesSite.com.   Do you need help with your podcast? Chaning Jang is the CSO of the Busara Center for Behavioral Economics and has helped lead the organization since 2013. He is responsible for strategy, and a portfolio of projects, primarily focused on research. Prior to joining Busara, Chaning worked as an English teacher in the Czech Republic and an equities trader in Los Angeles. Chaning completed a Postdoc at Princeton University in Psychology and Public Affairs, holds a PhD in Economics from the University of Hawai'i with specialization in Behavioral Economics and Development, and a bachelor's in Managerial Economics from the University of California, Davis.  He is also a CFA level II holder. We spoke to Chaning one night (for him) from his office in Nairobi, Kenya and we focused our discussion on context and how so much of psychological research has been focused in WEIRD countries (Western, Educated, Industrialized, Rich, and Democratic). Because of this focus and how behavior can be linked to cultural and social norms, countries that are not WEIRD are often unable to successfully apply the research that was executed in WEIRD cultures. Chaning is trying to change that. The work that the Busara Center is doing is important on many levels, the most significant is trying to eliminate poverty at the heart of where it is the worst on earth: Africa. Chaning’s work is fascinating, his ideas sparkle with intensity, and his comments are inspiring. We hope you enjoy our conversation with Chaning Jang. We've all been in a co-living situation when you stop to think about it. Whether it be living with family, friends, or classmates. Co-living, as a concept, isn't new. However, co-living as a service and affordable solution to city living is on the rise. WeWork has entered the space with WeLive. Startups are also entering the space, like Ollie and Starcity. Jon Dishotsky (@jondishotsky, TW) is the CEO and Co-Founder of Starcity and is on a mission to make cities more accessible to everyone. Starcity is a startup building a new category of real estate called co-living. Designed to help make cities accessible to anyone, Starcity offers its residents a comfortable living experience with a private, fully furnished bedroom complemented by warm, inviting shared kitchens and living spaces. Prior to co-founding Starcity in 2016, Jon spent more than ten years in commercial real estate, helping companies expand their headcount globally. Jon holds a Bachelor’s degree in Managerial Economics from UC Davis and is based in San Francisco, CA. Starcity makes living arrangements delightful and sustainable so that people can stay in cities long-term. They do this by redefining the meaning of home. Innovative interior-design that increases livable space and smart technology that reduces waste is at the core of their product. Starcity is building communities in a way that reflects the diverse, eclectic nature of each city. In this conversation, Blake and Jon discuss: Why the real estate market is ripe for co-living developments. How co-living property ROI differs from traditional real estate assets. The technology used to manage co-living properties and how it differs from traditional property management software. Learn more about Starcity on their website, starcity.com. During her college years at UC Davis, Donna played on several  intramural teams and studied Agriculture and Managerial Economics and took classes in Statistics and Finance which she really enjoyed. By the way, Donna did not get a graduate school degree and doesn’t feel she needed one. Donna also gets personal and shares how she navigated her career as a gay woman during a period of time in the US when a person’s sexual orientation wasn’t valued, let alone celebrated.
