On the Context Coaching Podcast, athletic administrator Dustin Mones (Monte Vista Christian) shares his journey from a multi-sport athlete in Connecticut to boarding school coach and athletic director roles at Eaglebrook and Stony Brook, then returning to Monte Vista as AD. He discusses early coaching insecurity, the importance of mentors for new athletic directors, and how small paperwork mistakes can directly impact student opportunities. Mones reflects on coaching learned under Don Keithley—discipline, attention to detail, and integrating faith—and contrasts boarding school co-curricular expectations with Monte Vista's day-school model, noting he misses deeper daily student connections. The conversation covers resisting youth sports specialization, training both physical and mental/spiritual aspects, simplifying practices, aligning consequences with behavior, and blending “old school” standards with empathy.00:00 Welcome and Guest Intro00:38 From Athlete to Educator02:40 Boarding School Coaching Life03:31 Returning as Athletic Director04:20 Year One Lessons and Why07:35 AD Transition Challenges10:00 Paperwork Mistakes and Details12:07 Mentors and Coaching Philosophy15:11 Junior Boarding School Insights18:05 All In vs Balance23:55 Day School Shift and Connection26:20 Multi Sport vs Specialization29:44 Co Curricular Requirements31:31 Required Co-Curriculars Model32:27 Arts and Athletics Crossover33:30 Boarding Program Considerations34:52 Culture Builders for Coaches36:27 Training Mind and Body38:37 Structuring Lifts and Practice43:49 Advice to Younger Coaches45:58 Mentoring and Keeping It Simple49:43 Entitlement and Life Lessons52:13 Old School vs New School Coaching57:05 Consequences That Align59:57 Final Wrap and Thanks
Houston Athletic Director Eddie Nuñez joins HEA for a conversation on how he is operating Houston athletics two years into his tenure. Nuñez discusses his working relationship with Chancellor Renu Khator and explains why he intentionally sought out presidents earlier in his career to better understand higher education leadership (and why future ADs should do that today). I asked Nuñez how ADs are blocking out the noise of so much commentary and industry news but still making sure they stay informed. He also responds to my curiosity on which would make fans more happy, Houston's pursuit of a national championship in men's basketball, or the football program making the College Football Playoff. The conversation also explores Nuñez's thoughts on what job descriptions and verticals he needed to make to fit their vision and approach to chase revenue. We also discussed the realities of competing in the state of Texas, both on the field and in the increasingly competitive business environment that now defines modern college sports.0:00 Introduction0:30 The Modern AD Preview4:25 Thoughts on Ryan Berryman and Jalen Dominguez at New Mexico11:05 Working with Long-Time Chancellor Renu Khator in this Era13:15 How The AD Job is Similar to College Presidents17:50 Blocking Out Industry Distractions and Extracting Good Information20:50 Isomorphism in Higher Education and College Athletics23:30 Competing Against Texas in Sports, Attention and Business 25:11 Men's Basketball National Championship or College Football Playoff Win?29:25 Reconfiguration of Job Descriptions for Revenue Generation Strategy33:48 Advice for Traditional Administrators to Stay the Course but LEARN Outside Comfort ZoneRead the first edition of The Modern AD: https://higheredathletics.com/AD Vantage empowers athletic directors with comprehensive staff data, performance analytics, and AI-powered candidate insights to make smarter hiring, compensation, and retention decisions in an era where every dollar counts. Hour 1 of The Drive kicks off with Zach and Phil cross-talking with Dover and Cecil. The guys discuss the dynamics of the coaching staff for the Broncos in Sean Payton's new role. Zach and Phil debate which Bronco lost the most stock during minicamp. Is Marvin Mims now expendable on the offense with the arrival of Jaylen Waddle? With Waddle's versatility, will they be able to line him up all over the field and even in the backfield? Has Caleb Lohner lost his chance at making the roster with his missed time on the field? The guys react to an article from the Denver Post detailing CU legend Darian Hagan's rocky relationship with the university since Deion Sanders arrived in Boulder. Phil shares about his time with Hagan and how he changed Phil's life as a coach. Has Deion Sanders alienated former Buffs football players by failing to embrace the program's history? Should Hagan's jersey be retired at Folsom Field? Will the new Athletic Director, Fernando Lovo, repair these relationships with the program?
This week on the Jochum Strength Podcast we had the pleasure of speaking with one my previous mentors Aaron DuVall. Aaron is the assistant Athletic Director for Sports Performance at the University of Pittsburgh. Throughout the episode we talked about relationship building with sport coaches, using sports science to highlight positives, and why one year is a still a long time to help develop an athlete in the NIL landscape. This was an awesome episode that showcased a lot of positivity and experience. As always thank you for listening and enjoy the episode.

In this episode of the Better Learning Podcast, host Mark Barga sits down with Dr. Tim Matlack (superintendent), Ken Bonkoski (director of facilities), and Phil Leinbach (architect, EM Architects) to tell the story of Antietam School District's response to a catastrophic flash flood on July 9, 2023 — and how a small, resource-limited district turned disaster into opportunity. Episode Takeaways: Crisis demands rapid, creative pivoting. When floodwaters destroyed 110,000 sq. ft. of educational space housing grades 7-12 and the district office — with FEMA providing zero financial assistance — the team had to improvise immediately. Students were relocated to a church, a neighboring elementary building, and eventually modular units, all while school opened on time that fall. Institutional trust is the foundation of effective school construction. With a decades-long relationship between the district and EM Architects, the team could move fast without losing alignment. Phil's advice: don't discard your architect like swapping doctors — that institutional knowledge of budgets, building history, and community context is irreplaceable. Flood-resilient design is possible, not just theoretical. The new Stony Creek Elementary is being built eight feet above the breach point of the 2023 flood, with solid creek-facing walls, storm water infrastructure, and a simplified rectangular footprint — giving the community genuine confidence without making promises nobody can guarantee. A strong school culture is built on shared purpose, not just shared hardship. Staff, neighboring districts (Exeter SD), community volunteers, and the National Guard all rallied around the district. Tim credits the faculty's family-like culture — which predates the flood — as the reason the district bent but didn't break. Flexibility is the greatest ability in school design and leadership. Phil's maxim: "Be like Gumby — bend, don't break." Ken's approach: don't get overwhelmed by the mountain in front of you; prioritize logistically, stay calm (mostly), own your mistakes, and keep moving. Tim's anchor: shared values around student outcomes are what let a team push through frustration and disagreement. About Dr. Tim Matlack: It was a singular honor for Dr. Timothy A. Matlack to rejoin the Mounts community in the role of Superintendent. From 2007-2022, he was fortunate enough to serve in a number of roles within the Antietam School District. For ten years, Dr. Matlack taught at the Middle-Senior High School in the Language Arts Department. For the next five years, he was given the opportunity to be an Assistant Principal K-12, Athletic Director and Curriculum Supervisor. In that time, he came to understand Antietam for the unique, supportive and tenacious community that it is. From 2022-2024, while he was the Director of Teaching and Learning at Tulpehocken Area School District, he thought often of Antietam and leapt at the opportunity to return as the Superintendent. About Ken Bonkoski: Ken Bonkoski is a facilities and maintenance professional based in Reading, Pennsylvania, known for his dedicated service in public education. He serves as the Facilities Manager for the Antietam School District, where he oversees building operations and ensures a safe, functional environment for students and staff. In addition to his work in education, Bonkoski is the owner of KB Construction, a company he founded in 1996. Through decades of hands-on experience, he has built a reputation for quality craftsmanship, reliability, and attention to detail across a wide range of construction and maintenance projects. Bonkoski gained wider recognition after being selected as a 2026 Pennsylvania RISE (Recognizing Inspiring School Employees) Award honoree, a distinction that highlights non-teaching school staff who make exceptional contributions to their communities. Colleagues and community members praise his strong work ethic and commitment. He is known for going beyond his standard responsibilities—often arriving early and staying late—to keep school facilities running smoothly and to support both students and staff. About Phil Leinbach: Philip began his career at AEM Architects in 1991 as a graduate architect and received his PA registration in 1994. He joined ownership of the firm in 2000 and ascended to President in 2012. Philip's background is in construction having worked for the family construction company prior to attending college. For over 35 years, his architectural philosophy has centered around the concept that the greatest design is worthless if it cannot be constructed effectively and efficiently by the skilled contractors in the local marketplace. He is a hands-on professional focused on creating programmatic and operational value for his clients and providing responsive construction administration that is critical to the success of all projects. Alex Donno joins the show for a wide-ranging conversation on Miami Hurricanes football, starting with the latest updates on the Canes-Gators rivalry and the program's aggressive push in elite recruiting battles. Donno breaks down Miami's pursuit of five-star edge rusher Jaiden Bryant, who is deciding between the Hurricanes and LSU, as well as top linebacker target Kaden Henderson, with Texas A&M also heavily involved. The discussion shifts to broader expectations for Miami this season, including concerns about offseason hype, the volatility of today's recruiting landscape with constant flips and transfers, and whether the Canes can finally develop a long-term quarterback internally instead of relying on transfers. Donno also weighs in on Miami's Athletic Director search, the disappointing finish to Canes baseball and potential coaching pressure, and how programs like North Carolina and Florida State are struggling in football recruiting. He also touches on how the modern NIL era has completely changed the role of an athletic director and what Miami needs in its next hire
Hour 3 begins with news that the Lions have hired former Dolphins GM Chris Grier in an organizational role, with Joe Rose noting the likely connection between Grier and Lions head coach Dan Campbell from their time together in Miami. The conversation then shifts to the NBA Finals as the Knicks and Spurs prepare for Game 1, with discussion around Jalen Brunson and Victor Wembanyama leading their respective teams and how this matchup features far less flopping than earlier playoff series. Alex Donno joins to break down Miami Hurricanes football, including major recruiting battles for five-star edge rusher Jaiden Bryant and top linebacker Kaden Henderson, as well as concerns about offseason hype, quarterback development, and whether Miami can finally build a long-term QB from within the program. Donno also weighs in on the Canes' Athletic Director search, struggles for programs like Florida State and North Carolina in recruiting, and the changing landscape of college sports under NIL. The hour also touches on the Marlins' inconsistency, Malachi Toney appearing on the cover of the new college football video game, Dante Moore returning to Oregon instead of entering the NFL Draft, and comments from a former Dolphins player criticizing ex-GM Jeff Ireland.
