Mat Bowtell is the founder and CEO of Free 3D Hands, an Australian charity that designs and 3D prints hands and assistive devices. The hands are provided for free, to children and adults all around the world and they even pay the postage! Mat freely shares his designs under an open-source licence so others can make and repair their own devices and to encourage further innovation. Mat's goal is to significantly bring down the cost of assistive technology to help those who currently cannot access or afford it. Mat was working as an engineer for Toyota in Australia and Japan before being made redundant in 2017 when the automotive industry shut down. He had made one hand, for one kid, with one 3D printer whilst he was still employed. This grew to two printers on the dining table, then six in the spare room! It was not long after his final day at work that Mat was named the Australian of the Year – Vic Local Hero for 2018 and he then knew what he was going to do with his future. Mat and his very understanding wife Yuka worked for two years as volunteers, living off his redundancy payout, to design and 3D print hands for kids. He relocated with his family to his hometown of Phillip Island and was working out of a single car garage. In 2019 the opportunity arose to lease a factory and through generous support Mat was able to establish Free 3D Hands as registered charity in Australia. He has now made hundreds of hands and assistive devices for people all around the world. In October 2020 he released his new Kinetic Hand design under an open source licence and to date it has been downloaded over 4000* times! There are over a billion people in the world who require some form of assistive technology and this number is set to double by 2030*. Currently only 1 in 10* people have access to the products they need. Mat believes that by openly sharing technology and ideas and by collaborating with others, more people will be able to access or afford the technology they need.To learn more about Free 3D Hands, please visit: https://free3dhands.org/--As always, thanks so much for tuning into Breaking Brave! M., Osborne, J., Doyle, C., Holmes, N., Bowtell, R., Brookes, M. J., Norman, K. A., Hasson, U., Cohen, J. D., Boto, E. Abstract: Magnetoencephalography with optically pumped magnetometers (OPM-MEG) offers a new way to record electrophysiological brain function, with significant advantages over conventional MEG including adaptability to head shape/size, free movement during scanning, better spatial resolution, increased signal, and no reliance on cryogenics. However, OPM-MEG remains in its infancy, with significant questions to be answered regarding optimal system design and robustness. Here, we present an open-source dataset acquired using a newly constructed OPM-MEG system with a triaxial sensor design averaging 168 channels. Using OPM-optimised magnetic shielding and active background-field control, we measure the test-retest reliability of the human connectome. We employ amplitude envelope correlation to measure whole-brain functional connectivity in 10 individuals whilst they watch a 600 s move clip. Our results show high repeatability between experimental runs at the group level, with a correlation coefficient of 0.81 in the theta, 0.93 in alpha and 0.94 in beta frequency ranges. At the individual subject level, we found marked differences between individuals, but high within-subject robustness (correlations of 0.56 {+/-} 0.25, 0.72 {+/-} 0.15 and 0.78 {+/-} 0.13 in theta, alpha and beta respectively). These results compare well to previously reported findings using conventional MEG; they show that OPM-MEG is a viable way to characterise whole brain connectivity and add significant weight to a growing argument that OPMs can overtake cryogenic sensors as the fundamental building block of MEG systems. Back after a short break while we were out in the Northern Territory hiking on country along the Larapinta Trail. Soooo much to share from our transformative week without signal or devices, but I probably need a bit longer to be able to find the right words, so I'll kick off this week with a bit of a hybrid #yaysofourlives episode that we recorded before I left. While I know I just set you up with the three sections for this segment, this week's guest is so fascinating that our interview was almost as long as a regular episode (and probably should have been), so today's episode is all about the Yayborhood Watch. Our wonderful yayborhood member, Stephanie Ippel, submitted the most amazing nomination for her fellow Phillip Island local, Mat Bowtell. You may have seen the video already of our visit to his factory on social media (and if you haven't, watch here), but Mat goes into more depth here about starting Free 3D Hands to make assistive hand devices using 3D printers at a fraction of the cost which he then provides FREE for children around the world. His aim is to make these items at 1/1000th of the cost changing the terrifying static that 90% of the over 1 billion people in the world who needed assistance devices aren't currently able to access them. The factory is solar powered ad the printers use recyclable plastic, recently advancing to even producing a bionic arm that costs just $100 versus the $30,000 that some equivalents cost to make. And it all unravelled during a pivot from a redundancy - the best kind of yayborhood story. I hope you enjoy as much as I did! And thank you so much again Stephanie for the nomination, I'm relying on you all to dob in your local heroes (especially those who would never nominate themselves for the spotlight they and their work deserves), so keep your eyes peeled! Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2020.09.25.313502v1?rss=1 Authors: Boto, E., Hill, R. M., Rea, M., Holmes, N., Seedat, Z. A., Leggett, J., Shah, V., Osborne, J., Bowtell, R., Brookes, M. J. Abstract: Optically-pumped magnetometers (OPMs) offer the potential for a step change in magnetoencephalography (MEG) enabling wearable systems that: provide improved data quality; accommodate any subject group; allow data capture during movement and offer a reduction in costs. However, OPM-MEG is still a nascent technology and, to realise its potential, it must be shown to facilitate key neuroscientific measurements, such as the characterisation of human brain networks. Networks, and the connectivities that underlie them, have become a core area of neuroscientific investigation, and their importance is underscored by many demonstrations of their perturbation in brain disorders. Consequently, a demonstration of network measurements via OPM-MEG would be a significant step forward. Here, we aimed to show that a wearable 50-channel OPM-MEG system enables characterisation of the electrophysiological connectome. To this end, we characterise connectivity in the resting state and during a simple visuo-motor task, using both OPM-MEG and a state-of-the-art 275-channel cryogenic MEG device. Our results show that connectome matrices from OPM and cryogenic systems exhibit an extremely high degree of similarity, with correlation values >70 %. This value is not measurably different to the correlation observed between connectomes measured in different subject groups, on a single scanner. In addition, similar differences in connectivity between individuals (scanned multiple times) were observed in cryogenic and OPM-MEG data, again demonstrating the fidelity of OPM-MEG data. This demonstration shows that a nascent OPM-MEG system offers results similar to a cryogenic device, even despite having ~5 times fewer sensors. This adds weight to the argument that OPMs will ultimately supersede cryogenic sensors for MEG measurement. Copy rights belong to original authors. Visit the link for more info

While I was in London for my birthday I got the change to meet and sit down with Pierre Bohanna, prop maker for such films as Harry Potter, Star Wars, and even Wonder Woman. He was introduced to me by friend Kat Miller of Muggle Net, the #1 Harry Potter Fan website. BIO: Pierre’s work history began with apprenticeships in pattern making, Engineering and boat building. Working initially on a bespoke sports car project, then prototype dory’s to off shore racing powerboats. His carrier in film started with a junior position at a model-making and effects company called Bowtell’s specialising in TV commercials and photography. This was pre-visual effects and so required ‘in camera’ models and effects. A great learning experience. Eventually he became a freelance Modeller and worked in the London area for similar effects companies and production companies (including Spitting Image and Hat Trick productions). Eventually he started working on Film Productions mostly at the three major studios of Pinewood, Leavesden and Shepperton making specialised Props, costumes and models. This included films such as Judge Dread, Phantom Menace, First Knight. Then he was asked to organise and make a large order of Props for Titanic. This began his carrier of organising, setting up and running departments for film productions to manufacture Props, Models and special Costumes. This includes films such as The World is not Enough, all 8 Harry Potter films, Sunshine, Dark Knight, Gravity, Edge of Tomorrow, The Force Awakens, Rogue One, Beauty and the Beast, The Legend of Tarzan, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, Star Wars – the Last Jedi, The Justice League. Films yet to be released or in production – Ready Player One, Han Solo, Fantastic Beasts – The Crimes of Gringelwald, Extinction, Wonder Woman 2, Stat Wars 9. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/mimosaswithmichael/support

Prof David Bowtell talks to ecancer at the 4th EUTROC meeting in Liverpool, UK about the mutations in different types of ovarian cancer and the integration of this information to better understand the survival of tumour cells. Understanding molecular subtypes and their biology will allow for the creation of a working framework to categorises the factors of survival for further analysis. Prof Bowtell also discusses a EUTROC trial looking at the p53 mutation and individualising treatment in recurrent disease.

Multi-centre, multi-vendor reproducibility of 7T QSM and R2* in the human brain: results from the UK7T study

Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2020.04.22.055624v1?rss=1 Authors: Rua, C., Clarke, W. T., Driver, I. D., Mougin, O., Morgan, A. T., Clare, S., Francis, S., Muir, K., Porter, D., Wise, R., Carpenter, A., Wiliams, G. B., Rowe, J. T., Bowtell, R., Rodgers, C. T. Abstract: We present the reliability of ultra-high field T2* MRI at 7T, as part of the UK7T Network's "Travelling Heads" study. T2*-weighted MRI images can be processed to produce quantitative susceptibility maps (QSM) and R2* maps. These reflect iron and myelin concentrations, which are altered in many pathophysiological processes. The relaxation parameters of human brain tissue are such that R2* mapping and QSM show particularly strong gains in contrast-to-noise ratio at ultra-high field (7T) vs clinical field strengths (1.5 - 3T). We aimed to determine the inter-subject and inter-site reproducibility of QSM and R2* mapping at 7T, in readiness for future multi-site clinical studies. Methods: Ten healthy volunteers were scanned with harmonised single- and multi-echo T2*-weighted gradient echo pulse sequences. Participants were scanned five times at each "home" site and once at each of four other sites. The five sites had 1x Philips, 2x Siemens Magnetom, and 2x Siemens Terra scanners. QSM and R2* maps were computed with the Multi-Scale Dipole Inversion (MSDI) algorithm (https://github.com/fil-physics/Publication-Code). Results were assessed in relevant subcortical and cortical regions of interest (ROIs) defined manually or by the MNI152 standard space. Results and Discussion: Mean susceptibility ({chi}) and R2* values agreed broadly with literature values in all ROIs. The inter-site within-subject standard deviation was 0.001-0.005 ppm ({chi}) and 0.0005-0.001 ms-1 (R2*). For {chi} this is 21-95% better than 3T reports, and 15-124% better for R2*. The median ICC from within- and cross-site R2* data was 0.98 and 0.91, respectively. Multi-echo QSM had greater variability vs single-echo QSM especially in areas with large B0 inhomogeneity such as the inferior frontal cortex. Across sites, R2* values were more consistent than QSM in subcortical structures due to differences in B0-shimming. On a between-subject level, our measured {chi} and R2* cross-site variance is comparable to within-site variance in the literature, suggesting that it is reasonable to pool data across sites using our harmonised protocol. Conclusion: The harmonized UK7T protocol and pipeline delivers over a 2-fold improvement in the coefficient of reproducibility for QSM and R2* at 7T compared to previous reports of multi-site reproducibility at 3T. These protocols are ready for use in multi-site clinical studies at 7T. Copy rights belong to original authors. Visit the link for more info
