Brian Katz, from California State University Long Beach, invites us to explore the various layers of ordinary sounds, informed by a little calculus. The limited frequencies that come out of the wave equation are what separates sounds that communicate (voice, music) from noise. These higher notes are in the sound itself and you can hear them (but alas, not on this compressed podcast audio). This is a relaunch of immerse! 6 with updated information on the Notre Dame renovations Brian Katz, acoustican, CNRS Research Director at Sorbonne University's Institute Jean Le Rond d'Alembert Sound Lab, is also a specialist in spatial hearing, room acoustics, and virtual reality. The most interesting development in the past few years was his work on the Notre Dame reconstruction with regard to the acoustics in trying to reproduce the century-old sound. April 2023 will see the launch of a 4-part French podcast series called “Une Fiction Sonore” @ http://alarecherchedenotredame.pasthasears.eu/. It includes “In Search of Notre Dame” which claims to plunge listeners Victor Hugo mind as he researches his new novel about the Notre-Dames in 1828. Hugo was upset by the poor condition of the cathedral. Hugo leads listeners on an investigation/experiment regarding Notre-Dame's acoustics and soundscapes over the centuries. April 2024 will see the streaming (audio or VR), of various works played in Notre-Dame in the simulated historic acoustic conditions appropriate to their composition period, spanning choir, organ, to full orchestras. He is currently working on a listening study that examines how the acoustics affects the transmission/reception of medieval music via various virtual acoustic conditions He and his colleagues are also placing a small choir in various virtual acoustic conditions corresponding to different historical states, and examining how their performance is modified. as well as refining acoustic material definitions by measuring various tapestries, rugs, and other fabrics at the Louvre and National Monument Archives. The results will be incorporated into simulations examining the more decorated periods of Notre-Dame's history. BRIAN KATZ knew he could coach basketball forever. He also knew that he had to listen to what others were telling him. Ultimately, the basketball mastermind made the decision. It was time to retire and see what life was about without the rigors of his life as a basketball coach.e So he said good-bye to Sac State Basketball, which represented 14 of his 45 years coaching the game of basketball. Good news is that after a month of transition, I think Katz is happy with his decision. We get to hear about it today. In today's episode of Experience the Buzz, Host Steve Buzzard catches up with his retired friend "Nobody will fully comprehend what Brian Katz has meant to the basketball community. I appreciate the insight that Brian delivers when it comes to describing life as a basketball coach. Be ready to be slapped upside the head with wisdom." Our conversation hits four areas: SEGMENT 1

It was like, one of those things where I just knew that I would be.[00:03:00] I relate it to the priesthood. Heard a guy years ago, he said, if you can get out of the priesthood, you probably should. If you cannot, it's your calling? I think that's coaching, at least for me, anyway.[00:04:00] Real quickly, you learn you don't know as much as you think you do.[00:05:04] It would have been different at each school.[00:06:01] When I coached high school, we never had anybody who didn't graduate. When I coached junior college, we had 109 out of 115, only six guys, 19 years of did not graduate go to four-year school. At Sac State, we're 42 out of 43.[00:06:42] I always say this do your words and your actions line up? If they do you're authentic, if they don't, you're not.[00:08:22] Carol Williams, Dick Davey model is pretty much what we do and that wasn't intentional. It just happens. You're a product of who you are for sure.[00:09:24] Never hire anyone who's not smarter than you.[00:12:42] I think players and coaches, when things get tough, what are you going to do? Are you going to bail out and blame others, or are you going to be loyal?[00:14:04] If the person is loyal and if the person is hard working, we'll figure out recruiting.[00:15:38] If you really understand what you value and also that you don't know everything, and you want to have culture built on honesty.[00:18:17] I realized that all of my friends, all of my friends are older coaches, every single one of them.[00:19:56] The head coach’s ability to get everyone in the organization to see the game through his eyes. Every person from the manager, to the trainer, to the strength coach, to the 15th man, they have to be able to see the game through the head coaches’ eyes.[00:22:46] I didn't really network. I never networked. What I did was I tried to work really hard at the craft of the game.[00:25:28] It's not so much me, it's who I recruit.[00:26:46] I keep talking about patience. Be more patient. Everything doesn't have to be done today, and everything doesn't have to be done perfect.[00:27:56] You inherently build in the why before they even ask[00:29:07] I believe you're recruiting everybody who you interact with every day.[00:30:41] We call it big brother, little brother.[00:32:06] He calls the safe chair. [00:32:52] Culture of honesty. [00:34:23] I think the key is to get really good at your craft so, bear with me on this, you can win enough to have the fruits of relationships come back towards you.[00:35:47] I like the off season better than during the season because the off season, you have eight months of really enjoying your players.[00:37:58] I tell players, Hey, our relationship will truly begin when you are not playing for me anymore.[00:40:33] So I sought Terry out. I invite him to work my camp, take him out to lunch and we'd talk. So, the relationship grew to the day and we're still very close.[00:43:26] I think the biggest deciding factor will be your family, and here's why.
