2023/24 was sneaky good! She reached a career high of 5 and winning both the Manchester and German Open titles, reached the World Tour final and had some confidence boosting wins over top 5 players. She'd also love to cap all of that off with her maiden British National title, and that event kicks off next week. Gina and I look back at last season, the ups and downs, her tribute to the recently retired Nour El Tayeb, the difficulties she's had staying healthy and of course her thoughts on the British Nationals. We catch-up on all the mid-season news and competition, including French, British, German, Swiss, and Spanish Nationals, the Four Nationals multi-country competition, the South Korean ranking event, and the Grand Prix Final's Juniors and Gala events. We also talk about injury news, the ISU Award nominations, and more. Following the 2023 Grand Prix Final last week in Beijing, China, there was little downtime as many skaters hurried to their National Championships around the globe. We cover the French, German, Swiss, and Spanish Figure Skating Nationals, as well as the Four Nationals multi-country competition. We also look back on British Nationals, the South Korean ranking event, the Junior Grand Prix Final, and quite a bit of news from around the skating landscape — including the nominations for the ISU Awards. All that to say: there are really no real off-weeks during skating season! News, Injuries, other things There's been a lot happening outside of competitions that we want to catch up on. From the unfortunate news of Niina Petrakina breaking her leg to the confirmation that both the teams of Riku Miura & Ryuchi Kihara and Hocke & Kunkel are out of their respective nationals due to injury, we're seeing some assumed medal contenders in question for the rest of the season. We also discuss the long-missing-from-competition Daniel Grassl, who's looking at a potential two-year suspension based on the recommendation of Italian anti-doping agency. On a lighter note, we dig into the ISU Award Nominations that just came out — and some of their questionable categories. Regardless, your can vote for your favorites until Jan 7, 2024. Winners to be announced Feb 11 at the Art on Ice event in Switzerland. The Many National Competitions Since there was so much happening, we stuck to the highlights and most newsworthy at each competition: French Nationals: We dig into the landslide victory of Adam Siao and the devastating free skate of Kevin Aymoz. British Nationals: Fear & Gibson won big,  but did it cost them the podium at GPF? German Nationals: Hase & Volodin continue their winning streak with their first German National Title — winning by 90 pts! Swiss Nationals: Lukas Britschgi soared in short program on his way to victory, and Kimmy Repond successfully returned to competition following her break due to injury to win the title.  Spanish Nationals: The first trip to their national championship for Olivia Smart & Tim Dieck proved victorious. (Though—and this didn't make the episode recording—they were weirdly NOT named to the Spanish World team. More to come here!) Four Nationals: Skaters from Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland, and Hungary competed with the most notable winners being Ekaterina Kurakova winning her 6th national title, Katerina Mrazkova & Daniel Mrazek taking dance, and Maria Pavlova & Aleksei Sviatchenko dominating the pairs.  South Korean ranking competition: Jun-hwan Cha was forced to compete while injured to qualify for Four Continents, and did so with a win. Yelim Kim and Haein Lee continued to struggle this season. Junior Grand Prix Finals While we broke down the Senior Grand Prix last week, this episode we talk about a few of the highlights from the Juniors competition. In dance, we were overwhelmingly impressed by an outstanding US ice dance team — Leah Neset & Artem Markelov — who came out with a gold medal and a lot of momentum. Keep an eye on them in seniors soon! Also very noteworthily, the continued rivalry between two incredible young women – Mao Shimada from Japan and Jia Shin from South Korea. In what promises to be a competition we'll see replayed over and over again in coming years, Mao Schimada overtook the gloriously musical Jia Shin for gold — but had to come from behind her after the short program. Expect a lot of back-and-forth for the top podium spots between these two if they stay this good in Juniors for now, and Seniors when they get there.  Follow Scoreography: Website — https://scoreography.show Instagram — https://www.instagram.com/scoreography Threads — https://www.threads.net/@scoreography BlueSky — https://bsky.app/profile/scoreography.show

Today I talk about Madge Sayers. A name you might not know unless you love to get deep into Olympic history, but Madge Sayers was one of the first and best female figure skaters in the early 1900's. In fact, she was one of the best regardless of gender and proved that by winning the British Nationals in 1903 against men. She then saw a women's division get created and won the first women's singles gold medal in the 1908 games. Sayers smashed down the doors for women, beating her own husband in competition and helped launch women's figure skating, which is one of the most popular events in the Winter Olympics today. Visit my website: saxinthemorning.com for merchandise and other links. Follow us on social media: Instagram: @saxinthemorning_podcastYouTube: subscribe and watch shorts here Sponsor: Wendigo Tea

I'm absolutely delighted to have on the show today, Daryl Selby. I feel lucky enough to call him one of my friends. We toured the world a lot together. He obviously reached a lot higher ranking than me, but we shared some cool tournaments and some cool times together. So, it's really cool to be able to have a chat with someone of Daryl's caliber, but also just an excuse to have a chat with a friend that I've not caught up with for a while. And hopefully this comes across on the conversation. It's nice and free flowing, it takes lots of different directions and we just have a good time having a good chat about his career, looking back at a few things, looking back at some really key moments in his career and a very different way to look at the mental side of the game, not your traditional style. He goes into a very honest open chat about his structure, his routine or lack thereof, and how this actually helped contribute to his mindset of his game. He talks a bit about how to play to your style and know yourself and that's a really powerful message. He comes at it from a different angle. It's not your traditional model of mental toughness, but boy, he was known as one of the most dogged players out there. If you watch him, he appears on “shot of the month” a lot of the time and also “rally of the decade”. He's got an amazing catalogue of entertaining skills. So naturally talented the way he hits the ball, smooth, great around the court, but the underlying fact is that he was dogged, he was determined, he never gave up. He had that real grit, that real determination and this comes across in the conversation. I hope you're able to extract a few things from the talk. Just a few little stats about Daryl. He's reached the world ranking high position of world number 9 in 2010. In 2011, in one of his biggest titles, he won the British Nationals, beating Nick Matthew, who at the time, Nick Matthew was world champion and world number 1. He goes into a lot of detail and a really great story of how he thought he won this event because of a poem from his sister, which is really sweet and really enlightening when you listen to it. Another couple of notable events; he reached the semi-finals of the Tournament of Champions in 2012. In 2019 he captained England at the World Team Championships. A very proud Englishman, he wears his heart on his sleeve when he's playing for his country, and he scored some really big wins in the England shirt. You can tell that he loves playing for England, and it's obviously a very different dynamic. I hope you enjoy this really wide ranging varied in depth friendly conversation with myself and Daryl Selby. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Having ridden extensively in Australia he then spent 3 years in the 90's over in the UK riding in British Nationals, Centre Trials and then European Championship and ended up riding for the Beta team.   Warren even managed to throw in a SSDT & a few world rounds.   What is interesting to discuss was this trend of needing to do an apprenticeship in Europe before tasting domestic success in NZ.   We also hear about the coaching he has done to help drive the sport forward.   I hope you enjoy this chat with Warren.   Feedback: podcast@trials.com.au

The US and Australia are among countries that have now vowed to get their citizens off a cruise ship moored off Japan, with coronavirus on-board. So far, the UK government's not committed to the same action, but the Evening Standard's deputy political editor Nicholas Cecil tells ‘The Leader' British diplomats are scrambling to help the 80 British nationals on the Diamond Princess. Meanwhile, another 99 cases of the illness have been diagnosed on the ship, bringing the total number to more than 450.Assessing the Damage of Storm Dennis Also, Jonathan Prynn looks at the damage caused by Storm Dennis. London seems to have escaped the worst of it, although hundreds of commuter train services were cancelled or delayed as rail workers battled to repair the lines. More than 600 flood alerts remain in place across the UK, and storm season's far from over.Superman flies in at Museum of ChildhoodAnd, the V and A's Museum of Childhood, one of London's favourite atractions, is about to get a £13 million pound refit. It does mean it will be shut for two years, but the reward at the end will be 2,000 objects going on show, including an original Superman outfit worn by Christopher Reeve. Arts correspondent Robert Dex has had a sneak preview, and speaks to the podcast about what's happening and why. 21. #21: Mastering Brazilian jiu-jitsu whilst battling life challenges with Leigh Joyce

Welcome the 1st interview of 2020 and what a glorious awe-inspiring show we have for you to get you pumped up for not only the week ahead, but to serve a sustenance for the entire decade ahead. Stories of not being born with a silver spoon in the mouth come a dime and dozen – however subjective the story, few resonate and touch the soul. When I heard Leigh's story, I was compelled to share it with you all in order to inspire, motivate and cultivate a fighter's spirit that I believe we all have. Tapping into this source of strength can literally transport you out from a desperate situation, be that poverty, drug addiction, severe injuries, overcoming loss and even violence. Leigh has navigated these obstacles and bares all in this NO HOLDS BARRED interview. Leigh is a Brazilian jiu-jitsu athlete which is a martial art and combat sport system that focuses on grappling with particular emphasis on ground fighting. Before we get into the details, here is his injury list to help set the scene regarding what you must potentially go through and overcome to reach the zenith in this sport. By the way Leigh recently won 3 gold and 1 bronze medal at the Brazilian jiu-jitsu event held on Poland.     Injury list (major) Removed left deltoid/ part of bicep 15/6/19 3 (complete) broken ribs left side March ‘18 Snapped sternum Popped right knee (meniscus tear) 2 broken ribs right side Broken fingers/toes Weaknesses - NONE.   Leigh is hard as nails so the rest is his own words, I was Admitted to hospital after the 4th visit to A&E on June 15th ‘19 I was meant to compete in the Spanish Nationals that weekend and then the British Nationals the weekend after. Obviously, that didn't happen, I spent 5days in hospital. 1.5hrs in surgery the 1st time and 2hrs the 2nd. I had part of my triceps and deltoid removed due to a serious (arm/life threatening) infection. My white blood cell count for inflammation was 155, normal levels are between 0 - 5.  Things like this motivate me, it's like throwing a bucket of petrol over my fire to compete. They told me two months for a full recovery, I was back in the gym on the Monday. That's 5 days after I was discharged, and I aimed to be back competing by October.   I started my fight camp for that (the London fall) on the 26th Sep, that's 5 weeks after my operation to save my arm and ultimately my life. go figure.   Halfway through the camp my body unfortunately shut down. The telling day was the morning that we did 2hrs of kickboxing, boxing and Jiu Jitsu (all sparring rounds) I popped my knee in the first half hour with a sweep kick and I knew that was my sign.   The following week I lost my appetite, I had inflammation throughout my whole body. I couldn't extend either of my arms or the leg I had just injured. My neck hurt, my back hurt, my forearms and legs felt tight. It was time to stop.   When I reflect back on how much I actually did after my operation it is totally crazy, I mean I went from being practically dead to a super intense fight camp training twice a day 6days a week five weeks later. Heavy compound exercises, cardiac output, heart rate power intervals, combat training. No Quit. Obviously, I worked up to this, I was in the gym five days after I was discharged from hospital. Ffs.   Look it's like this, call me crazy or call me stupid but, you know, you only find your limits by pushing them. I don't like sitting still, time waits for no-one and I would rather die trying than to live on a what if. I have a vision and I am working my arse off to achieve that vision, the world, the universe, it knows what I want but it's been slowing me down for a reason. I was pushing too hard in the wrong direction. It was time to take a (subtle) step back.   Since then I started my next fight camp at the beginning of Dec for the European championship which will be my next competition in 3 weeks.   Adversities are part of life how you handle them is living.    ‘THE MIC DROP CLUB' would like to Thank Leigh for taking the time out from his busy schedule to share loads of Mic Drop moments – We wish him Joy, Love and Success for 2020 & beyond.   Don't just live life – make life BOOM!   Follow Leigh leighjoyce@live.com   Instagram Leighjoyce

As they discuss, Brexit brings with it legal uncertainty and the possibility that these citizens who had set up their lives based on one legal system—with the related rights, social and tax advantages—face the prospect of becoming third country nationals governed through each country’s migration regimes.
