This episode Tim and Russell discuss the importance of generating power in our leadership. A significant point is that we must establish personal accountability, critiquing the tendency to shift blame onto others. Russell points out that making excuses and failing to take ownership often hinders individuals from addressing issues effectively, particularly when they shirk responsibility due to fear of confronting authority or peers. To counter this, Russell advocates for cultivating courage and exerting power over one's circumstances by overcoming common rationalizations like catastrophizing and mind reading. The speaker urges action towards desired results, emphasizing the need for deliberate thought and behavior. In this episode, Tim and Russell, discuss the crucial role of leadership in all facets of life, with a particular focus on emotional intelligence and its significance for leaders. The Tim and Russell delve into how leaders must manage their own emotions and inspire positive feelings such as enthusiasm and trust in their teams. We underscore the importance of psychological safety in the workplace, encouraging leaders to cultivate an environment where team members can voice unconventional ideas and bad news without fear. However, they argue that it's not sufficient to merely create safe spaces; leaders should also foster their team's courage to engage in difficult conversations and manage conflict. The discussion addresses the concept of emotional mastery, emphasizing the need for individuals to separate facts from the interpretations they assign to events. By understanding that emotions are a product of these personal interpretations, leaders can take responsibility for their reactions and work towards more constructive outcomes. Russell introduces the “results model,” a five-step process (fact, meaning, emotion, action, and results) designed to help individuals be mindful of their emotions and choose actions that align with their desired results. The text connects emotions to actions, illustrating how misinterpretations can lead to unnecessary conflicts and stressing the importance of personal accountability for one's feelings. Lastly, the podcast touches upon the idea of being proactive in designing one's life, hinting at a deeper exploration of this topic in the following week's episode. In this episode, Russell Heath stresses the critical role of leadership, shaped by character and behavior rather than just skills, in reaching organizational objectives. The guest shares their journey of personal growth, from relocating from Alaska to New York City to partake in a leadership coaching program, underlining the lack of such programs in Alaska and the conscious choice to develop as a leader. The discussion also highlights the necessity of risk-taking, vulnerability, and accountability in leadership, differentiating between being a leader and merely being liked. Moreover, the conversation addresses the essence of courage in leadership, outlining steps to become a better leader, and drawing a line between leadership and management roles. Finally, it touches on the results-oriented nature of leadership, questioning the sufficiency of outcomes after many years in a leadership role and the importance of evaluating the quality of those results. #LeadershipPodcast #LifeCoachWisdom #LifeCoaching #LeadershipDevelopment #TakeTheLead Russell Heath Links: Website: https://russellheath.net Books by Russell: Nearly award-winning Alaska thrillers. The wonderful writer Luis Alberto Urrea says that a deep truth of our time is that “we miss each other.” He is singularly wise about the deep meaning and the problem of borders. The Mexican-American border, as he likes to say, ran straight through his parents' Mexican-American marriage and divorce. His works of fiction and non-fiction confuse every dehumanizing caricature of Mexicans — and of U.S. border guards. The possibility of our time, as he lives and witnesses with his writing, is to evolve the old melting pot to the 21st-century richness of “us” — with all the mess and necessary humor required.Luis Alberto Urrea is an English professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago. He has published in nearly every genre, including nonfiction, memoir, short stories, historical novels, poetry, and even an award-winning mystery story, and has been called a “literary badass.” His many books include Into the Beautiful North, The Devil's Highway, The Hummingbird's Daughter, The Tijuana Book of the Dead and The House of Broken Angels. She can only win if she betrays her friend Dan Wakefield, a Native fighting desperately for what was promised to his people a generation ago. In the back rooms of the legislature, Senator Billy Macon manipulates Alaska’s grimy politics with vindictive mastery in the drive to the governor’s mansion. No one conveys the suffering, courage, joy, and spirit of those who dwell in the U.S.-Mexico borderlands better than Pulitzer finalist and master storyteller Luis Alberto Urrea, whether it’s the horror of “The Devil’s Highway” or the allure of La Gloriosa in “The House of Broken Angels.” Urrea, whose father was Mexican and mother was from New York, talks about how the culture wars in his home shaped who he is today, the controversy surrounding the Jeanine Cummins novel “American Dirt,” and his Guggenheim project, a book about his mother's bravery as a Red Cross worker on the World War II frontlines. In this first part, Richard tells us about the long road to breaking through with Altered Carbon, and we hear about why breaking some of the conventional rules about getting published led to his success.Links:Buy Altered Carbon, Thin Air and Richard's other books on AmazonVisit Richard's page to find out moreThe Page One Podcast is brought to you by Write Gear, creators of Page One - the Writer's Notebook. 'All we do, mija, is love. Love is the answer. Nothing stops it. Not borders. Not death.' In his final days, beloved and ailing patriarch Miguel Angel de La Cruz, affectionately called Big Angel, has summoned his entire clan for one last legendary birthday party. But as the party approaches, his mother, nearly one hundred, dies, transforming the weekend into a farewell doubleheader. Among the guests is Big Angel's half brother, known as Little Angel, who must reckon with the truth that although he shares a father with his siblings, he has not, as a half gringo, shared a life. Across two bittersweet days in their San Diego neighbourhood, the revellers mingle among the palm trees and cacti, celebrating the lives of Big Angel and his mother, and recounting the many inspiring tales that have passed into family lore, the acts both ordinary and heroic that brought these citizens to a fraught and sublime country and allowed them to flourish in the land they have come to call home. Timely, exuberant and moving, The House of Broken Angels, which was shortlisted for the National Book Critics Circle Award, is Luis Alberto Urrea's long-overdue UK debut.

This special Live Wire episode brings together some "All-Star" guests by way of the Portland Book Festival; celebrated author Luis Alberto Urrea dissects the dynamics of his Mexican family, which inspired his latest book "The House of Broken Angels;" master poet Eileen Myles takes on the presidency in a reading of their epic poem "Acceptance Speech;" and internet sensation Moshow The Cat Rapper gives lessons on peace, love, and not declawing your cats.
A border as liminal space, an imposed metaphor on the family, a place of crossing, a place of pressure. “There is no them. There is only us.” The fullness of what it is to be Mexican (and American). Evolving into enjoying each other more. The wonderful writer Luis Alberto Urrea says that a deep truth of our time is that “we miss each other.” We have this drive to erect barriers between ourselves and yet this makes us a little crazy. He is singularly wise about the deep meaning and the problem of borders. The Mexican-American border, as he likes to say, ran straight through his parents’ Mexican-American marriage and divorce. His works of fiction and non-fiction confuse every dehumanizing caricature of Mexicans — and of U.S. border guards. The possibility of our time, as he lives and witnesses with his writing, is to evolve the old melting pot to the 21st-century richness of “us” — with all the mess and necessary humor required. Luis Alberto Urrea is an English professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago. He has published in nearly every genre, including nonfiction, memoir, short stories, historical novels, poetry, and even an award-winning mystery story, and has been called a “literary badass.” His many books include “Into the Beautiful North,” “The Devil’s Highway,” “The Hummingbird’s Daughter,” “The Tijuana Book of the Dead and The House of Broken Angels.” Find the transcript for this show at onbeing.org.

Author Luis Alberto Urrea's latest novel, The House of Broken Angels, is inspired by his own Mexican-American family. Set in a San Diego neighborhood, the book's characters celebrate a final birthday for a beloved brother dying of cancer, and a funeral for his elderly mother. The farewell doubleheader may sound depressing, but the book buzzes with joy. And so does this talk from Urrea, held on stage in Aspen, Colorado as part of an Aspen Words lecture series. This month, we present Syrebral in the mix. This 24-year old Australian bass music producer has been making music on and off for over 10 years but only in the last three years has started seriously producing and it is starting to show with the amount of attention he is getting recently. His debut release was the smashing drumstep track "Broken Angels" that was released on a Drumstep compilation for Heavy Artillery Recordings. Syrebral's "Broken Angels EP" was finally released in December of 2011 with a remix by xKore. Syrebral's music is a blend of intensely cinematic and orchestral interludes with extremely raw synthesized smashing drops. Syrebral manages to write music that is both gorgeous and frightening at the same time. In this mix, Syrebral brings you his latest tracks and remixes in an exclusive mix! Much to Preston's audible dismay, Shaggy Fancy Pants staggers by the AoMS studio to get boozed and bring sexy back. The Word Whore adds a large dose of frankness to her 'to do' list. "Broken Angels" - a FISH story of figurines loved and lost – gets much more lost than loved, in this beer-soaked trainwreck from the cutting room floor.
