HIQA has been requested to consider the case for a Model 4 hospital, equipped with a maternity wing in Ennis. It follows a meeting between the health watchdog and Friends of Ennis Hospital which heard there is no time frame for the release of an interim report analysing the case for a second emergency department in the MidWest. Plans are in place to incorporate the Maternity Hospital on the Ennis Road into University Hospital Limerick in the coming years, which currently accounts for 1,200 Clare births annually. With presentations at UHL hitting a record high of 87,000 last year, Friends of Ennis Hospital Chair, Angela Coll, says a facility here would reduce this by 25%.

Series One: Birth Trauma Episode Four: Trauma informed birth debriefing and so much more with Fiona Reid We had the great pleasure in having a discussion with the fabulous Fiona Reid. We could listen to her beautifully heartfelt articulate reflections all day long. Fiona has practiced midwifery for over 30 years. She has worked in rural, regional, and metropolitan centres. She has worked in several midwifery roles including private midwifery practice, birth centres, MGP and overseas in Papua New Guinea and India. She has worked as a Midwifery Clinical Specialist in a Level 6 Maternity Hospital and as a Clinical Midwifery Consultant in a Level 5 Maternity Hospital, and she has developed and taught Midwifery Studies in two universities and at TAFE. In 2018 Fiona initiated and developed a Formal Birth Debriefing Service using Trauma Informed Care principles at a regional hospital and in that capacity, she has debriefed 567 women, families, and practicing midwives. She now understands the urgent need for deep compassion driven care in maternity services for everyone involved in receiving care and for those providing care if we want to modify trauma by protecting the ‘humanness' of expert, clinical practice. Welcome to the ninth edition of our Russian-language podcast Then & Now with me, Teresa Cherfas. My guest today is Tetyana Sokolova, a professional midwife of 40 years at Mariupol Maternity Hospital No. 2, on the left bank of Mariupol near Azovstal, the industrial plant that became a centre of resistance against the Russian invaders. On 9 March, the city's Maternity Hospital No. 3 was bombed by Russian aircraft and the whole world watched with horror pictures of the destroyed building and Ukrainian soldiers' desperate attempts to save the life of a pregnant woman, as she lay on a stretcher among the ruins.Three pregnant women from the rubble of Maternity Hospital No. 3 were brought to Tetyana and her team of midwives, For her work, her resilience and her bravery under the most difficult of conditions, Tetyana was awarded the international Anna Politkovskaya prize, named in honour of the murdered journalist. My questions1. Where were you when you realised that Russia had invaded Ukraine? What was your reaction and what were your first thoughts?2. You went to work on 2 March. Did you waver at all in your decision? After all, it was less than a week since the war had started. What made you to go to work that day?3. Tell us about the events of 9 March and how they impacted you personally.4. You have worked in Mariupol all your professional life - what made you become a midwife?5. Could you ever have imagined that you would be an eyewitness to alleged war crimes?6. How did you escape from Mariupol?7. Where do you live now?8. Do you cherish hopes of returning to Mariupol one day? 10. Were you surprised to be awarded the Anna Politkovskaya prize? Did you know about her before?

In Health in Ruins: The Capitalist Destruction of Medical Care at a Colombian Maternity Hospital (Duke UP, 2022), César Ernesto Abadía-Barrero chronicles the story of El Materno—Colombia's oldest maternity and neonatal health center and teaching hospital—over several decades as it faced constant threats of government shutdown. Using team-based and collaborative ethnography to analyze the social life of neoliberal health policy, Abadía-Barrero details the everyday dynamics around teaching, learning, and working in health care before, during, and after privatization. He argues that health care privatization is not only about defunding public hospitals; it also ruins rich traditions of medical care by denying or destroying ways of practicing medicine that challenge Western medicine. Despite radical cuts in funding and a corrupt and malfunctioning privatized system, El Materno's professors, staff, and students continued to find ways to provide innovative, high-quality, and noncommodified health care. By tracking the violences, conflicts, hopes, and uncertainties that characterized the struggles to keep El Materno open, Abadía-Barrero demonstrates that any study of medical care needs to be embedded in larger political histories. Linnea is a Swedish native who's lived full time in the UK and is now based over in Dublin, Ireland. Besides her incredibly strong (and incredibly accurate) broad Irish accent, the fact that she's not a native anglophone is all the more impressive when you consider that Linnea's written two books in English, and has several written features for the Irish Independent, opinion pieces for the Guardian and the Irish Times, and conducted her podcast, Bits of Me, in English too.  Linnea has also been hugely active in the reproductive rights movement over in Ireland. She immersed herself fully into the campaign for the repeal movement of the “8th amendment”, a piece of Irish law that was essentially a blanket ban on abortion, stating that the foetus and mother's lives are completely equal. A referendum in 2018 finally resulted in its repeal, marking a huge social and cultural change in Ireland. Northern Ireland eventually followed in 2020. I still cannot quite believe how remarkably recent this is. There are so, so many women globally who are still fighting for this right to to choose - yet there are also an enormous number of women who are experiencing the chipping away of this choice, too. Texas, you know who you are. We live in very strange times. Linnea's story is particularly relevant to the repeal of this 8th amendment. Linnea was faced with an agonising decision when her unborn baby was diagnosed with triploidy at 20 weeks, a rare genetic abnormality where there is an extra set of chromosomes in the foetus's cells.  This is only a small portion of her story, which is absolutely fascinating. This pregnancy expedited some time away from her career, and an amazing choice to go back to education and get her masters. Linnea finished her dissertation at 9 months pregnant, and now has 2 boys, juggles creative projects, her podcast, her own business as an English language copy agency for nordic brands, as well as project management and blogging. This is one impressive lady. Linnea is incredibly inspiring and shares a brilliant story. For all sorts of reasons, this is one of my proudest episodes to date, and I'll think you'll see why when you listen. Photos of the aftermath captured by Evgeniy Maloletka -- a Ukrainian photographer working in the besieged city -- shocked audiences around the world when they appeared in the international press. We have Rohit on the show today, the Co-Founder of Cloud Nine Hospitals. For those of you who don't know, Cloud Nine is a chain of Maternity hospitals. In fact, they were the pioneers of dedicated pregnancy hospital when they first launched in 2007. Since then, they've expanded to 9 cities and built more than 20 hospitals. Along the way, they've raised close to 500 Crores from investors like Matrix Partners, Sequoia, and True North! We speak to Rohit about how they came up with the idea to build a speciality hospital when Multi-speciality hospitals were the norm, the economics of a hospital, their customer focus and the innovations that have come out of that. Here's an example of one such innovation: If you've been a parent, you would know that back in the day, the cost of delivering a child through natural birth process vs a C-section were different with the latter being more expensive. This resulted in mis-aligned incentives where hospitals often pushed for C-Section, if when not needed, because they made more revenue. Cloudnine was the first hospital to standardize rates and improve the experience for the to-be parents. Just like this, they've done a bunch of innovations across the process of pregnancy as well as scaling operations. We talk to Rohit about his entire journey, inflection points and the learnings from building a large business in the healthcare industry!

Shocked Afghans ask why perpetrators targeted a maternity hospital and a funeral

It was just another morning at the Dasht-e-Barchi hospital in Kabul. The government-run hospital hosts a maternity clinic run by Doctors Without Borders, which is also known by its French name, Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF).Around 10 a.m., three gunmen disguised as police burst into the hospital’s maternity ward and started shooting. They fired indiscriminately, killing at least two dozen people — including mothers, infants, hospital workers and a policeman. The ordeal lasted for five hours. Videos from the scene showed Afghan security forces rushing out of the hospital with tiny newborns in their arms. Later, Zahra Jafari, a midwife at the hospital, told Afghan reporters that she had just welcomed some new patients earlier that morning. They died a few hours later.Related: Iranian border guards allegedly drowned 45 Afghan migrants. Their families want answers.“I just wish I hadn’t admitted them,” she said, crying. “I just wish I hadn’t.”In a separate attack in Nangarhar province that same day, a suicide bomber targeted a funeral, killing at least 32 people. The twin attacks have left many in Afghanistan in shock and wondering when the bloodshed in their country will end.On Wednesday, MSF issued a statement calling the attack “revolting.”“While fighting was ongoing, one woman gave birth to her baby, and both are doing well,” MSF said in its statement.“Under international humanitarian law, we know that [hospitals] are protected institutions.”Hadi Marifat, Afghanistan Human Rights and Democracy Organization“Under international humanitarian law, we know that [hospitals] are protected institutions,” said Hadi Marifat, executive director of the Afghanistan Human Rights and Democracy Organization.“So, any attack on civilian institutions and particularly medical centers and medical facilities is a war crime,” Marifat said.In fact, in a statement, Human Rights Watch described this week’s attack on the hospital as a war crime.Related: ISIS families held in Syrian camps face uncertain futures. Now, the coronavirus also looms.“An attack on a maternity clinic is simply unspeakable,” said Patricia Gossman, associate Asia director at Human Rights Watch. “This attack is the latest incident of an armed group in Afghanistan targeting patients, health care workers and medical facilities.”Marifat explained that the coronavirus lockdown in Kabul might help explain why the assailants targeted a hospital.“Kabul is locked down, and there are not that many gatherings of the people that they could go and target,” he said. “So, the hospital was the only place with a lot of people to be attacked and killed.”The Taliban has denied responsibility for Tuesday’s attacks. Marifat said the blame is shifting toward ISIS. However, he added, “we know that such kind of attack cannot be carried out without some sort of support from the Taliban.”The ISIS affiliate in Afghanistan took responsibility for the attack on the funeral in Nangarhar province. The Taliban has stepped up its attacks in recent months.Related: Before coronavirus, young Iraqis held some of the biggest protests in the country's historyAccording to Afghanistan’s Office of the National Security Council, the group has carried out dozens of attacks on a daily basis since it signed an agreement with the United States back in February.“We are not pleased with the level of violence in Afghanistan,” said Jonathan Hoffman, a spokesman at the US Defense Department in a press conference last week. His comments came after the US mission in Afghanistan for the first time refused to publicly release its data on insurgent attacks.Hoffman explained why: “We’re working towards a better solution, a better place for Afghanistan and the sharing of that information would not be … would not move that ball forward.”This is concerning to some members of the Afghan government who say that the US is turning a blind eye to the atrocities of the Taliban.“Hundreds of attacks have happened on Afghan citizens since the deal has been signed.”Mariam Solaimankhail, Afghanistan member of parliament“Hundreds of attacks have happened on Afghan citizens since the deal has been signed,” Mariam Solaimankhail, a member of Afghanistan’s parliament, told The World.Solaimankhail pointed to connections between the Taliban and ISIS in Afghanistan.“When you look at their fighters on the ground, they’re the ones who are ex-Talebs [former Taliban members],” she said. “It seems like maybe some of them don’t like what happened with the US deal and the peace process. Their main goal is to cause disunity and mayhem in Afghanistan.”Related: Saudi activists allege a tribesman was killed over glitzy megacity plansAfghan President Ashraf Ghani said on Wednesday that his government is not going to stay silent. He ordered security forces to begin an offensive against the extremist groups.Solaimankhail supports the president’s decision.“People are dying when we’re in a defensive nature,” she said. “So, if we can become offensive, maybe it will give us some hope.”Solaimankhail added that Afghans want peace with the Taliban. But the Taliban has to meet them halfway.

First, we tell the story of Dr. Martha Ripley who had the crazy notion that all women deserved decent maternity care and was an intense warrior, fighting against the patriarchy. Then, we talk about the Willmar 8 who didn't take kindly to being paid less than men and took to the streets in -70 degree weather to strike! Stuff your snowsuits full of newspaper and hit the picket line as we wine about herstory! ** Mornings with u by Barradeen | https://soundcloud.com/barradeenMusic promoted by https://www.free-stock-music.comCreative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unportedhttps://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/deed.en_US Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/winingaboutherstory/overview)

This is an episode examining the first four months of 2017 and the myriad of political events that have occurred. Starting with the Gardaí scandal, the new Broadcast Tax, the Jobstown trial and the upcoming leadership race inside Fine Gael, focusing upon Leo Varadkar, his politics and the impact his victory would have on the country and on FG’s political future. Unfortunately we ran out of time to discuss other issues such as the Maternity Hospital, the #Grace trial and the Constitutional Convention, these will be examined in subsequent episodes. The row over ownership of the new Maternity Hospital may be dying down, for now, but it has revealed some interesting things about the politics, people, and institutions involved. Mary Minihan and Pat Leahy discuss the story with Hugh Linehan. Later in the podcast they look at the outcome of the Citizens' Assembly. That's after we hear from Cora Sherlock and Breda O'Brien, both campaigners for the retention of the 8th Amendment.
