Austin's COVID stats have not only dropped below Stage 5 range, they've plummeted through Stage 4 and are now approaching Stage 3 - however, City officials remain reluctant to officially reduce local precaution levels due to a continuing lack of hospital capacity. Austin's rising homicide stats are in line with a severe spike in murders across the country - the FBI reports that nationally, murders in 2020 rose 30% from 2019 - and a UT professor says gun proliferation is to blame. Austin gets one of Texas' two new U.S. House districts - the new U.S. House District 37 - while new maps concocted by Republicans in the Legislature appear to minimize representation of Latino and Black Texans. Next Monday, October 4, is the registration deadline for the November 2 election which will involve Texas Constitutional amendments, and locally Prop A, a petition-driven ballot item on minimum police staffing for Austin - which itself may threaten the funding of the Austin Fire Department if passed. A Confederate monument will be removed from Lockhart's Caldwell County Courthouse grounds as a public fundraiser achieves its goal. The next Austin Restaurant Weeks fundraiser for the Central Texas Food Bank starts on Friday. Jeffrey Weinberger, longtime Austin restaurateur and namesake of Clarksville's Jeffrey's, has died at 74. ACL Fest puts tickets on sale, but cheaper prices might be available via Ticketmaster's exchange site - while Waterloo Records has decided to skip this year's Fest due to COVID concerns. After years of rumored closures, the Nutty Brown Amphitheater has announced the farewell shows for its longtime location on Highway 290. And a wet cold front arrives tonight and sticks around thru the weekend - ACL attendees, be advised.
Nell Edgington, author of “Reinventing Social Change: Embrace Abundance to Create a Healthier and more Equitable World,” has traveled coast to coast in her quest to guide social-change warriors in realizing their full power and capability. Social change movements have been part of our country's DNA for hundreds of years, encompassing the abolitionist movement of the 1800s, the suffragist movement that culminated in women gaining the right to vote in 1920, and the civil rights movement that gained widespread support in the 1960s and whose work continues to this day. Whether you are a social change activist, involved in the nonprofit or philanthropic world, or just have an interest in what it takes for the arc of justice to bend, Nell's conversation with host Grant Oliphant will inspire and re-energize. Born and raised in Minnesota, with a professional background that includes time at PBS national headquarters in Arlington, Virginia, and at the Central Texas Food Bank in Austin, Nell has been president of the Austin-based management consultant group Social Velocity since its founding in 2008. “Reinventing Social Change” was published in 2021. A fan of Janelle Monáe and Robert Frost, Nell brings a sense of joy and optimism to her work, which she encourages in others: “We are infinitely more powerful – in creating social change, or really in doing anything – when we approach it from a place of joy.” “We Can Be” is hosted by Heinz Endowments President Grant Oliphant, and produced by the Endowments, Josh Franzos and Tim Murray. Theme music by Josh Slifkin. Guest inquiries can be made to Scott Roller at sroller@heinz.org. Image: Justin Edgington

The impasse between the majority Republicans and the D.C.-sequestered Democratic minority continues as the clock ticks on the current special session. The curtailing of Federal unemployment benefits in Texas spurs a 30% jump in demand at the Central Texas Food Bank. Q2 Stadium hosts its highest-stakes soccer match yet tonight - the U.S. Men's National Team vs Qatar. The Austin City Council is considering a return of vehicular traffic on weekend evenings to East 6th Street. McKinney, Texas, started taking home the roasted salsas from Bernard Gourmet Foods right away two years ago. We recommend the Mango Pineapple y Habenero salsa and the Tomato y Chipotle salsa. Pick up some at Loco Cowpoke Salsa Shop, the McKinney Wine Merchant, local farmer’s markets and at Essentialz Market and Cafe when in historic McKinney, Texas. Bernard Gourmet Foods made the Top 25 Finalists, and H-E-B will announce the Quest for Texas best on Aug. 10 at the Central Texas Food Bank in Austin. Congrats to Bernard Gourmet Foods on this honor. We give the salsas as birthday gifts, so grab some for your family and enjoy shopping locally. And, if you are a newcomer, treat yourself to a shopping trip with friends to downtown McKinney, Texas. ... which of their salsas is your favorite?

This episode of the podcast is going to be a little different than usual. As y'all know, Texas was rocked by Hurricane Harvey last week, particularly the Houston area — which happens to be where I live. That's why I thought I'd give y'all a look at my evacuation experience, as well as sharing the stories of a a couple EPIC employees whose families felt the wrath of Harvey. My goal is this: to highlight how, in the grand scheme of things, the problems we faced (and in some cases, are still facing) are minor inconveniences compared to so many others who have been left homeless or worse in the hurricane's wake. Unfortunately, such tragedy touched one of our very own EPIC Wolfpack. We'll hear from our founder Katie's mother, Terri as she shares an incredible story of courage and kindness. And to help make some sense of things and how we can all do our part to help out, I chat with Elizabeth Pena, Development Director for the Central Texas Food Bank. In addition to being our closest charitable partner, the food bank has been running at full steam collecting donations and getting aid to people in need.
