We're kicking off the New Year at the ESG Insider podcast with a look forward to the big trends driving the sustainability space for 2024. In the episode we speak to two sustainability leaders about the topics they're watching in the year ahead. Marina Severinovsky, Head of Sustainability North America at UK-based asset management firm Schroders, explains how investors are moving from climate transition commitments to solutions and implementation. "You've made the commitment, but now the hard work begins, and it's really the people who are responsible for the portfolios that have to think about how you put decarbonization into practice across multiple asset classes ... and do so in a way that doesn't impose on the integrity of the portfolio," Marina says. We also speak to Aniket Shah, Managing Director and Global Head of the Sustainability and Transition Strategy Team at financial services company Jefferies Group. Aniket shares his view on how investment approaches to sustainability are evolving. “ESG as a standalone part of the financial and business community may go away, and it may go away in the next year or two — and that's going to happen at the very same time as the underlying environmental, social and governance issues have never been as important as they are today for investors and for corporates,” Aniket says. "We see this in the fund flow data — that flows into ESG-labeled funds, especially here in the United States, continue to decrease. And again, at the same time, there has never been more investment in solar, in wind, in electric vehicles, in battery storage, in climate resilience and climate adaptation.” This piece was published by S&P Global Sustainable1, a part of S&P Global. It's not everyday you have Mumbai high court lawyers on your show. Aneesa & Ranjeev also happen to be my closest friends. Adding to the mix is a producer from Vice India, my good friend Aniket Dasgupta. This episode talks about how overwhelming understanding the law is, how ignorance of it isn't tolerated and what we can do to change our attitude towards it (or maybe we just pretend to). All of the guests (including me ) moved to Mumbai for our careers so there is a lot of millennial frustration of figuring out our lives while also getting used to the mega city that is Mumbai.____________________________Simple Ken is hosted by Kenny Sebastian, A stand up comedian known for his observational humour and quirky stage presence.A simple podcast about tackling the weekly conflicts of a comedian. Combining archival research with ethnographic fieldwork, Aniket De's book The Boundary of Laughter: Popular Performances Across Borders in South Asia (Oxford UP, 2022) explores how spaces of popular performance have changed with the emergence of national borders in modern South Asia. The author traces the making of the popular theater form called Gambhira by Hindu and Muslim peasants and laborers in colonial Bengal, and explores the fate of the tradition after the Partition of the region in 1947. Drawing on a rich and hitherto unexplored archive of Gambhira songs and plays, this book provides a new approach for studying popular performances as shared spaces-that can accommodate peoples across national and religious boundaries. Last mile delivery is one of the biggest problems of India. Due to the scale of required operations, the last mile is usually close to unreachable with the resources that the government has. Even though the government undertakes many social welfare programmes, these fail to make an impact on the ground, where they are the most needed. This is where companies like Haqdarshak come in. They provide an agent-based welfare scheme linkage at the last mile. By using assisted tech and linking schemes to those who need it, they make sure that the social welfare programmes reach to those who need it the most. Today we have guest Aniket Doegar, the Co-Founder & CEO, Haqdarshak, an organization using tech to ensure last mile delivery of social welfare schemes. He was also featured in Forbes 30 under 30 Asia and is a graduate from Stanford University School of Business.
How the debate over genetically modified crops in India is transforming science and politics Genetically modified or transgenic crops are controversial across the world. Advocates see such crops as crucial to feeding the world's growing population; critics oppose them for pushing farmers deeper into ecological and economic distress, and for shoring up the power of agribusinesses. India leads the world in terms of the intensity of democratic engagement with transgenic crops. In Genetically Modified Democracy: Transgenic Crops in Contemporary India (Yale UP, 2022), anthropologist Aniket Aga excavates the genealogy of conflicts of interest and disputes over truth that animate the ongoing debate in India around the commercial release of transgenic food crops. The debate may well transform agriculture and food irreversibly in a country already witness to widespread agrarian distress, and over 300,000 suicides by farmers in the last two decades. Aga illustrates how state, science, and agrarian capitalism interact in novel ways to transform how democracy is lived and understood, and sheds light on the dynamics of technological change in populous, unequal polities.
