This week mixes entomology with etymology as Dan explores the phrase Queen Bee. For thousands of years we called them King Bees, despite knowing for a good portion of that time the leader of the honey bee colony was female. Spoiler alert: It's Aristotle's fault. Well, his and everyone else who contributed (and still contributes) to systemic discrimination in nearly all our institutions. But thanks to Charles Butler and Queen Elizabeth the Queen Bee broke free! We have earworms, Twitter threads, and long book titles in store for this week's Bunny Trails! Born in West Warwick, John was a loving devoted father. John also leaves his loving partner, Maureen Power of Chepachet. He is survived by his brother, sister along with all his loving nieces and nephews, 7 grandchildren who he cherished and enjoyed taking them for hikes, ATV rides and teaching them his love for animals and his land. John worked at Arnold's Motorcycles in Providence as their Service Manager from the 1960's till the close of business. He was a member of Arnold's Harley-Davidson Racing team and personally drag raced for Harley-Davidson, where he won and set numerous International and National records. John also would periodically assist Harley-Davidson with product design. John then continued his love for motorcycles and opened his own shop on his farm, where riding enthusiasts would come from all over the country for his expertise and knowledge of the Harley-Davidsons. For many years, John worked with the Rhode Island State Police Motorcycle Division as one of their instructors. John was an avid woodsman who enjoyed countless days with his friends hunting, hiking, ATV riding and beekeeping. His farm consisted of many animals throughout the years. His compassion to nurse and care for injured deer was witnessed by all who knew him. One of his greatest pleasures in life was having his family and friends around to share his passion. If you were John's friend, you knew you were always welcome to stop by, hang at the garage and share some stories with all the guys. The echoes of laughter from John, Randy, Mikey, Sal, CJ, Pete, and his countless other best friends (too many to name) can be heard the minute you drive up to the farm. These memories will always be treasured by all who knew him. This is just a short story of his life. John was truly a unique and amazing man, but always humble. He accomplished so much yet he lived life simply. He had so much more to teach everyone, and his Spirit will live on in the woods he loved so much. Thank you for taking a moment with us today to remember and celebrate John's life. That's it for today, we'll be back next time with more! Also, remember to check out our sponsor Perennial, Daily Gut & Brain, available at the CVS on Main St. in Wakefield! See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Charles Butler is a talk show host, based in Chicago, in the third largest market in America. His podcast program, 'The Reality Check with Charles Butler', addresses cultural issues and current topics of interest. Now that the pandemic has spread around the world, we are seeing patterns in how is spread across the nation. Consequently, cultural differences have apparently played a role in the susceptibility to this contagion. African American communities tend to have a more social closeness in communal gatherings which are often more intimate than many European American activities. Unfortunately, closeness in family gatherings and social affairs hastens the spread of the disease. Statistics show that Africans Americans have be hard hit by the pandemic because of this and other reasons. Be version 2.0 of yourself – Personal development and self-help tips
I will never be happy. If that’s your mantra, you need to meet Mr. Butler. He’s a character in a novel Martin Eden by Jack London. He ended up realizing, “I sacrificed everything for money and now I will never be happy.” Today, I’m going to break down his mistakes to help you become happier. Butler’s story Charles Butler went to work at a young age. He worked in the daytime and studied at night. He began as an office boy at a law firm and quickly progressed to a clerk and then junior partner. He was ambitious. Butler denied himself any enjoyment in life and saved money. Soon, he was rich. He reached his goal but was he happy? Mistake 1: He sacrificed happiness for his goal “Layin' up money, workin' all day an' studyin' all night, just workin' an' never playin', never havin' a good time, an' never learnin' how to have a good time--of course his thirty thousand came along too late.” Butler wired himself to be happy only when he got his goal. And in the process of getting there, he lost something important: his ability to enjoy life. “An' I bet that he's solemn an' serious as an old owl, an' doesn't care a rap for a good time, for all his thirty thousand a year.” He thought money would make him happy and felt jealous of rich people. But then he got rich and felt jealous of happy people. “An' I'll bet he's not particularly joyful at seein' others have a good time.” Mistake 2: He focused on making money “He could not find an adequate motive in Butler's life of pinching and privation. Had he done it for love of a woman, or for attainment of beauty, Martin would have understood.” Butler made a false assumption that money would make him happy. And he failed miserably. Money does provide comfort but not necessarily happiness. He should’ve focused on being happy rather than making money. Focusing on doing what he loved and service to other people. Then he would’ve been happy. And he would’ve also made money because he would’ve been naturally good at doing what he loved. Mistake 3: He ruined his health Butler’s dyspepsia is a perfect metaphor for how we already have what we need to be happy. He had his health and ability to enjoy life but thought that wasn’t enough. And when he got rich, he couldn’t enjoy it because of dyspepsia. At that point, he realized that he should’ve been happy when he still had had his health. Mistake 4: He was stingy Butler was too economical. And he pushed himself into a scarcity mindset. He held onto his money even when he became rich. What’s the point of being rich if he wired himself not to be able to spend it? Mistake 5: He missed his golden years “Why, thirty thousand, lump sum, wouldn't buy for him right now what ten cents he was layin' up would have bought him, when he was a kid, in the way of candy an' peanuts.” Kids can be 100% present in the now wherein lies our happiness. Butler didn’t make use of those golden years. He never learned to be playful in life. He taught himself to be serious. And that’s a state that makes it hard to be happy. One actionable tip "I feel sorry for Butler. He was too young to know better, but he robbed himself of life for the sake of thirty thousand a year that's clean wasted upon him.” Don’t be Mr. Butler so that you end up saying, “I will never be happy.” Be Martin Eden. He pursued his passion and loved passionately. He had fun all the time. He enjoyed his money by spending it and giving away happily. A life coach Tomas Svitorka said: “20s should be years of experimenting and exploring what you love and what you want in life. As soon as you find it, buckle down and pursue it with all you have. With that said, don’t miss out on life entirely. There are things you won’t be able to do later. Always pursue fulfilment.” Break through your barriers If you need help being happier, check out my life coaching services. Are all religions a viable option to God? In this sermon, Pastor Butler explains God's salvation plan for humanity and why it's the only sufficient path to a relationship with the creator. Are the stories we tell ourselves putting us further ahead or setting us back? Are they getting us anxious making us want to escape the situation or are they helping us to run head first at our challenges. We often we set limits on what we are able to accomplish in the long term and assume we can do a lot more in the short term. Change your perspective on the situations that you have gone through and the potential situations you may go through in the future. Making small changes to your mindset is what can set you apart from the rest around you.Instead of constantly thinking of the “what ifs” and worrying about what is going to happen in the future, change your perspective to think of all the good things that could happen and start to visualize how the next situation is going to go. Replace negative thoughts with positive ones.Hosts: Ryan Gardner and Nik HallResources:-Mindset: The New Psychology of Success - Carol Dweck [book]-Daring Greatly - Brene Brown [book]-“Be the hero of your own movie” - Joe Rogan [video]-“Will Smith on Skydiving” [video]-The Golden Rules - Bob Bowman, Charles Butler [book]Connect & Subscribe:Website: earnedeffort.comInstagram: instagram.com/earnedeffortFacebook: facebook.com/EarnedEffortTwitter: twitter.com/EarnedEffortEmail: hello@earnedeffort.comSubscribe and listen on Apple Podcasts, Stitcher, Overcast, Google Play, or YouTubeLeave a review on Apple PodcastsFollow Your Hosts:Nik’s Instagram: instagram.com/nikolashallRyan’s Instagram: instagram.com/RyanGardnerCRyan’s Twitter: twitter.com/RyanGardnerCRyan's Goodreads: goodreads.com/RyanGardnerC
Our long road through life is varied and unknown. The great hope is that at the end of the road, we will arrive at a phenomenal home waiting for us. The encouragement from this passage is found in the companionship that the Lord provides us on the road through life, until we reach our final destination in heaven. Psalm 23
We've all experienced milestones in our lives, moments that are special due to their achievements from hard work, obstacles that were overcome, or unexpected victories. King David was no stranger to victories, so the way that he builds depth into the image of the Shepherd in this passage is unique. Here, the Shepherd's role shifts from that of a guide to that of a host. We learn of three affirmations that the Shepherd host gives to His flock: the Lord celebrates us, the Lord shields us, and the Lord refreshes us. Psalm 23
Misadventures happen to everyone. When we wander into them unexpectedly, we may find ourselves trembling in fear and despairing. But as we learn in this passage, the Good Shepherd comforts us during the darkest moments because He is there with us. We don't have to surrender to fear. Psalm 23
Have you ever failed spectacularly? When David wrote this Psalm, he was in the midst of great personal and spiritual struggle. But as this passage points out, God never left David in a state of despair. When we choose to sin, consequences follow. But there's good news for all of us: God restores us from our greatest failures and realigns our steps. Psalm 23
Do you trust the Good Shepherd? In this passage, we discover many ways that God care for us, guides us, and provides for us. Our response should be to rely on His strength and guidance, so that we are not left wandering aimlessly. Psalm 23

“I’m not a challenged athlete, I’m an athlete with challenges…there’s a big difference.”Matt LongIn 2005, New York City firefighter, avid marathoner and ironman athlete Matt Long hopped onto his bike to do what he did every day — ride from his East side Manhattan apartment north to the Randall's Island fire academy where he helped train the city’s bravest. As he crossed 52nd Street, a 20-ton bus made a right turn from the middle lane. The bus didn't just hit him, it dragged his body completely underneath, where Matt was then quite literally impaled by his bike. After receiving 68 units of blood in the first 40 hours post-accident, Matt spent the next month in a coma. When he woke up, the doctors told him he was facing a one percent chance of survival.Matt had other plans. After a 5-month hospital stint and 40 surgeries in under two years, he did more than survive. He finally came alive. The story of Matt’s accident and his comeback quest to tackle the 2008 NYC marathon just 3 years after his accident was first chronicled in an extraordinary story in Runner's World by Charles Butler entitled A Second Life. That story was later adapted and expanded into Matt's exceptionally inspiring memoir, The Long Run* , a work of co-authorship by Long and Butler (not to be confused with my buddy and RRP favorite Mishka Shubaly's equally compelling Kindle Single, also entitled The Long Run*).Today Matt will tell you not only does he not regret the accident, it is the one thing that has made him whole. There are many words that can be used to describe Matt — firefighter, 9/11 first responder, ironman athlete, accomplished marathoner, advocate, bon vivant, husband and father. But one word will suffice: hero.Matt is a man I hold in high regard as an incredible example of the resiliency not just of the physical body, but of the emotional body — the indomitable, boundless strength of the human spirit in selfless service to others.Great guy. Great talk.I sincerely hope you enjoy the exchange.Peace + Plants,Listen & Subscribe on iTunes | Soundcloud | Stitcher | TuneInProduction, music & sound design by Tyler Piatt.
