Feliks Banel's guests on this live broadcast of CASCADE OF HISTORY are a panel of expert local historians, researchers and authors who have been collaborating on a search for evidence of Peter Kirk's long-ago steel mill on Rose Hill, east of downtown Kirkland near the Costco. Matt McCauley, Kent Sullivan, Saundra Middleton (who is a descendant of Peter Kirk) and Michael Donnelly have been studying archives, maps, photos and other materials to paint a vivid picture of the partial construction of the mill in the 1890s, the specific whereabouts of various buildings and structures, as well as the ultimate fate of the site (and of Kirk's venture) in the early 20th century. The group will be presenting two free illustrated public programs at Heritage Hall in Kirkland in October and November. The first will take place Wednesday, October 30 at 7:00 pm; the second will take place on Wednesday, November 20 at 7:00 pm. More information: https://kirklandhistory.org/ We also played some vintage audio from Tony Ventrella, the beloved local broadcaster who passed away on Saturday, October 19, 2024 at age 80. Dawgman.com's Kim Grinolds caught up this weekend with Yogi Roth from the Pac-12 Networks, and Yogi found his way to New Orleans for Monday's Sugar Bowl between the Texas Longhorns and Washington Huskies. Roth is in a position to offer a very unique perspective into this game because he knows both programs well. His connection with Texas Head Coach Steve Sarkisian goes back nearly 20 years ago to their time together at USC. He also knows Washington's program through his years and years covering all the Pac-12 programs as part of his role as an analyst and commentator for the Pac-12 Networks. The conversation starts out strong, as Yogi laid out his argument for why Washington should have been the number-one seed, which meant they would have been playing out west at the Rose Bowl, regardless of who they would have been matched up with. And then they transition to his time with Sark and not only the moment where he found out he got the Washington head coaching job (spoiler: Yogi was in the room when the call came through), to how he helped the Huskies get back on their feet. Then Kim gets Yogi's take on current UW Head Coach Kalen DeBoer, his initial impressions when he saw the Huskies in training camp over a year ago and what he feels has made DeBoer so successful so quickly. Yogi also offers up a Washington player that he feels could end up being a difference-maker Monday night during the Sugar Bowl. Kim also asked Yogi for his take on Washington quarterback Michael Penix Jr. What makes Mike special as a player? Yogi definitely has thoughts about this, as well as thoughts on a number of the other veteran Huskies that have created the foundation for the current UW program, as well as the identity that has been forged inside that locker room. To finish out the conversation, Yogi offers up his thoughts on Steve Sarkisian's journey from Heritage Hall to Austin, including his time on Montlake and the associated trials and tribulations he went through during those years to come out the other side and eventually become the head coach of another major FBS program in Texas. In this edition of the Peristyle Podcast hosts Ryan Abraham and Chris Trevino are back in studio LIVE talking about the Trojan football team's return to Howard Jones Field for the resumption of spring football practice. On Tuesday, after nearly two weeks away from the field, the players and coaches returned to practice in a rare Los Angeles downpour, with part of the workout moving to the artificial turf of Cromwell Field. After practice instead of conducting interviews outside the media was moved inside Heritage Hall so everyone could be dry talking about USC spring practice No. 4. Head coach Lincoln Riley talked about a number of topics including their plan to acquire more talent from the NCAA Transfer Portal and how he feels that they have improved the roster over what they had last season, including the gap between the starters and the players just behind them. Defensive coordinator Alex Grinch also spoke for the first time since the Cotton Bowl, talking about what went wrong in that game and how he is looking to see improvement in year two of his system. The guys also talk about USC's Pro Day, another rainy affair, where 12 former Trojan players went through drills and testing for NFL scouts. We were able to hear from Andrew Vorhees who put up an inspiring 38 bench press reps of 225 pounds despite tearing his ACL in drills. On Wednesday veteran tight end Malcolm Epps announced on social media that he would be entering the NCAA Transfer Portal as a graduate transfer. The guys talk about what the loss of Epps means and how it opens up another spot for Riley on the roster. They also discuss USC's latest support staff addition, veteran NFL and college defensive back coach Greg Brown plus what transfer running back MarShawn Lloyd said about how Caleb Williams said that sealed his recruitment. A 13-year-old boy has been identified by Gwinnett County police as the teen who died after he was shot in the middle of a Norcross area street Tuesday night. Jaeden Travis was shot on Windward Lane in unincorporated Norcross, near his home. Police were called to the scene at about 5:40 p.m. on Tuesday, and found Travis laying in the street. He was taken to a nearby hospital where he later died from his injuries. Police are continuing to investigate who shot Travis and why they shot him, according to Cpl. William Wolfe. The Gwinnett County Police Department Homicide and Crime Scene Investigations Units spent the evening combing the area and interviewing neighbors. Anyone who has information about who shot Travis, or why they shot him, is asked to call detectives or Crime Stoppers, which lets tipsters remain anonymous. Drivers in the Lilburn area have a new place to go when they need to renew the tag on their vehicles. The Gwinnett County Tax Commissioner's Office announced a new tag renewal kiosk has been installed at the Kroger located at 300 Five Forks Trickum Road in Lilburn. It is the ninth tag renewal kiosk in Gwinnett County. Vehicle owners can use the kiosk to renew their license plate without having to wait in a line at a tag office. It will be available during the store's operating hours, which are 6 a.m. until 11 p.m. The kiosks accept debit and credit cards, and users will have to pay a small convenience fee to use them. The Tax Commissioner's Office does have 24hour kiosks at its Lawrenceville and North Gwinnett offices, in addition to the seven kiosks that are located at retail businesses. In many ways, the city of Lawrenceville and Lawrenceville First United Methodist Church have grown and developed together, as the city was incorporated in 1821 (making it the second-oldest municipality in metro Atlanta) and the church was established just two years later. As the church celebrates its 200th anniversary this year, Senior Pastor Adam Hilderbrandt is adamant that the city and the church continue their centuries-long connection through an initiative known as “Lawrenceville First.” Lawrenceville First UMC has offered a helping hand to a number of entities in the community, including homeless shelters, food cooperatives and the schools in the Central Gwinnett Cluster. The church, which was founded in February 1823 by the Rev. William Justice Parks, is focusing on its anniversary this month, with special services each week. On the first Sunday of February, a confirmation celebration was held, and on the second Sunday of the month, Lawrenceville FUMC's community partners were invited to speak to the congregation. This Sunday , former pastor Davis Chappell — now senior pastor at Brentwood United Methodist Church in Brentwood, Tennessee — will return to preach, and a very special dedication is also planned. Hilderbrandt noted that from 1904 until 1972, the church met in the building which now houses the Aurora Theatre, which plays a role in the special ceremony. Six Berkmar High School students were chosen to display their ceramic artwork at this year's 2023 Georgia High School Ceramic Arts Awards and Symposium. The Georgia High School Ceramic Arts Awards and Symposium is an annual gathering of ceramic artists from around the state of Georgia. The symposium consists of a Juried Student Exhibition and several hands-on workshops. The exhibition showcases ceramic art made by high school students from both public and private high schools throughout the state. The exhibition took place on January 21 at LaGrange College's Lamar Dodd Art Center and showcased art from students from 26 different schools. The GCPS students selected for this year's symposium include the following Berkmar students: ♦ Evelyn Garcia, junior ♦ Joselyn Pineda Tejada, senior ♦ Joselin Reyes, junior ♦ Kristine Vuu, junior ♦ Nayeishka Morales Collado, junior ♦ and Yolibeth Contreras, senior The GFWC Lilburn Women's Club is looking for local restaurants who want to come together and offer the community a sampling of their dishes. The club is set to host its first Taste of Lilburn event from 4 until 7 p.m. on April 29 at Salem Missionary Baptist Church's Heritage Hall. In anticipation of that event, the group is now taking applications from restaurants, bakeries and chefs to have a booth at it. Anyone who would like to apply to have a booth at the event can find the application at Taste of Lilburn dot org. Applications are now being accepted for the award-winning Suwanee Youth Leaders, a nine-month leadership program led by the city of Suwanee. The program is a community-based leadership experience that focuses on developing young leaders through structured educational programs and team-building activities. With a mission to “empower young leaders to connect inside the community and make an impact outside the classroom,” the program centers on civic involvement, leadership skills, and volunteer opportunities. Students will have the opportunity to participate in monthly learning sessions, including a two-day retreat, listen to guest speakers, attend field trips, and participate in several hands-on projects including event planning and a community service initiative. The Class of 2023-24 will begin meeting in August of 2023 with new sophomores and juniors, and will meet throughout the school year until April 2024. The city will accept applications between Feb. 15 and March 31. Heritage Hall running back/defensive back River Faulkner is having an excellent senior year. Injuries kept him out of playoff games as a sophomore and a junior. He's hoping to participate in the playoffs his senior year and earn a Gold Ball with his Charger teammates. History is his favorite subject so winning a state championship would be a nice historic way to end his high school football career. River also participates in Esports and he's helped coach a 6th grade football team. Michael Knight joins Deion Imade to break down the Class 3A playoff race.

In the opening take, Grant closes the book on Caleb Williams' college decision. Then Lee joins to tee Grant up to gloat about correctly thinking that Jaxson Dart would likely go to Ole Miss (3:00). Caleb Williams is going to USC more than a month after entering the transfer portal. How long will it take Lincoln Riley to get USC in position to compete for a Pac 12 Title? USC's roster is not very good. Can Alex Grinch immediately improve USC's defense the same way he helped OU's defense in Year 1 (7:45)? Wisconsin seemed to become a serious possibility for Caleb Williams. Lee explains why he started to buy Madison as Williams' destination, while Grant never thought Wisconsin was really in play. Will we ever get the full story of what went into the last month with Caleb Williams (23:55)? Joel Klatt tweeted that USC could be a top 10 team and a dark horse National Title contender in 2022. Will Lincoln Riley evolve as a head coach? We're rooting against him (29:15). Grant's super impressed with Brent Venables' ability to salvage OU's 2022 signing class (37:55). Lee wants to talk about Coy Eakin, the HS recruit who caught their eye in December during the Texas HS Football State Championship games. Plus we're happy Heritage Hall's Gavin Freeman is not leaving the state and is going to OU (40:40). We turn our attention to our preseason predictions from August of 2021. Listen in to hear what we got right, and what we got wrong about the 2021 college football season. We begin with Grant being way off on Eric Gray's production (49:15). Both guys anticipated Marvin Mims to be OU's leading pass catcher, Grant picked the wrong DB to lead OU in tackles, and there was a time when we wondered if OU's defense would get to 60 sacks in a season (55:30). Caleb Williams came out of nowhere to be the most important offensive player besides Spencer Rattler, Lee's pick for most important defensive player was kinda wrong, but also kinda right (1:01:35). Drake Stoops turned out to be the most underrated offensive player while Justin Broiles came out of nowhere to be the most underrated defensive player. Billy Bowman had a lot of hype in fall camp, but he wasn't the most impacful true freshman (1:04:40). OU's trap game and then it's funny looking back at our thoughts on what OU's "worst case scenario" would be (1:09:50). Grant thought OU would go unbeaten in the regular season and he was off on TCU -- BUT Grant absolutley nailed Iowa State (1:21:40). We finish off the show with a look back at all of our National college football predictions (1:29:30). Born in West Warwick, John was a loving devoted father. John also leaves his loving partner, Maureen Power of Chepachet. He is survived by his brother, sister along with all his loving nieces and nephews, 7 grandchildren who he cherished and enjoyed taking them for hikes, ATV rides and teaching them his love for animals and his land. John worked at Arnold's Motorcycles in Providence as their Service Manager from the 1960's till the close of business. He was a member of Arnold's Harley-Davidson Racing team and personally drag raced for Harley-Davidson, where he won and set numerous International and National records. John also would periodically assist Harley-Davidson with product design. John then continued his love for motorcycles and opened his own shop on his farm, where riding enthusiasts would come from all over the country for his expertise and knowledge of the Harley-Davidsons. For many years, John worked with the Rhode Island State Police Motorcycle Division as one of their instructors. John was an avid woodsman who enjoyed countless days with his friends hunting, hiking, ATV riding and beekeeping. His farm consisted of many animals throughout the years. His compassion to nurse and care for injured deer was witnessed by all who knew him. One of his greatest pleasures in life was having his family and friends around to share his passion. If you were John's friend, you knew you were always welcome to stop by, hang at the garage and share some stories with all the guys. The echoes of laughter from John, Randy, Mikey, Sal, CJ, Pete, and his countless other best friends (too many to name) can be heard the minute you drive up to the farm. These memories will always be treasured by all who knew him. This is just a short story of his life. John was truly a unique and amazing man, but always humble. He accomplished so much yet he lived life simply. He had so much more to teach everyone, and his Spirit will live on in the woods he loved so much. Thank you for taking a moment with us today to remember and celebrate John's life. That's it for today, we'll be back next time with more! While I am in Nepal preparing for my epic Mt Everest & Lhotse climb, here's a "Rewind" replay of one of my most popular episodes with Jake Olson. In life, there are different things that hit you at different times, but what’s important is how you get back up when this happens. One of the hardest thing that can hit you in life is being diagnosed with retinoblastoma as early as 8 months old. Because of this rare eye cancer, Jake Olson lost his eyes. This setback however, did not keep him from living a life with amazing opportunities that led him to become a blind football player. But other than playing as the long snapper for the USC Trojans, Jake has also set-up a foundation called Out Of Sight Faith and is the author of Open Your Eyes. Learn more of his amazing journey as a kid who lost his eyes but never stopped playing sports. The thing that makes Jake such a unique soul is that the guy is blind and he plays in the football team. He plays on the USC football team. He's a snapper and he got in two games in the 2017 season. He's the first D1 football athlete ever to do so. The guy is just a remarkable dude. He is a guy that had a rare form of cancer in his eyes. He lost his first one when he was just a youngster. Years later when he was twelve, he lost the other one. Through that whole process, he formed a relationship with the old great college football coach, Pete Carroll of USC. That morphed into something and the next thing he knew, he was invited to come out and walk on at USC, and there he is. He documented what it's like. He was sitting there in Heritage Hall. He's got his guide dog next to him, and just is so far ahead of the game on so many people. He's written a couple of books, has a foundation, and just continues to inspire a lot of people. One of the better pods I have done. Remember to always rate, review, go in and help us out. Give us some love. Let's get on to a great episode with Jake.

Two powerful women from the Guelph Black Heritage Society, namely Denise and Kween, are here with us today to bring awareness to their cause. The GBHS is based at a historical stone church, built in 1880 by formerly enslaved black individuals, who fled to Canada via the famed Underground Railroad. Today, under the stewardship of GBHS, this building has been renamed Heritage Hall and acts as a cultural centre for the black community in Guelph. Denise currently serves as the volunteer President/Treasurer of the GBHS. A proud Jamaican-Canadian with a passion for history and education, Denise is looking forward to the end of the pandemic so she can continue her travels to learn more about black history in Canada and abroad. Kween is the leader of the Guelph BLM Protest and the Executive Director and Social Justice Initiatives Coordinator for the GBHS and is honoured to be a role model for her city. Mentioned in This Episode Guelph Black Heritage Society Change Starts Now: a series of 11 events running from April 29 - May 2, focused on the education and celebration of black culture John Ware Reclaimed - a film by Cheryl Foggo surrounding the legacy of an iconic black cowboy What you will learn: The purpose of the Guelph Black Heritage Society (2:20) Promoting black culture and heritage in Guelph Supporting and reaching out to like-minded people Tips on engaging with influencers (5:11) Genuine passion - connecting with people through stories GBHS education initiative - Change Starts Now (7:16) Approaching sponsorships and strategic partnering (10:49) Finding others who share your goals, commitments, and values Overcoming challenges (18:13) Planning and goal-setting Dealing with back-lash Goals for the GBHS (23:22) GBHS Mentality - Quotes From the Show “It's our duty as educators, as leaders, to continue (to set) an example” “I needed someone who was a voice for me when I couldn't necessarily be a voice for myself” “You have to believe in what you are doing” “Every great dream begins with a dreamer” (Harriet Tubman)
According to Matt Dacy, director of Heritage Hall, Mayo Clinic’s museum, the story does not begin and end with two people at a ceremony — in fact, their discovery took the work of dozens of people, over thirty years of research, and as always, a little bit of luck.
The crew talks about the tough ending to the Heritage Hall football playoff run, chronicles the NY Jets blunders, and surveys the college football scene as the regular season draws to an end.
We’ve heard a lot of talk about this being a moment, and June 6 was indeed a memorable moment in the history of Guelph with over 5,000 people in Market Square to march for Black Lives Matter. It amplified of a lot of voices who don’t always get heard in our community despite best intentions, but moments pass and that one was almost four months ago. How have things been going lately? Since the Black Lives Matter march here in June, more people have been sharing their stories and experiences with an inequitable system, and to add insult to injury, the search for that justice made Guelph Black Heritage Society the target for renewed racist attacks. In the summer, the Society’s headquarters at Heritage Hall on Essex Street was repeatedly vandalized, a very visible and very visceral reminder that there’s still a lot of work to be done in our backyard. This week's guest is Kayla “Kween” Gerber, who is the executive director and community engagement co-ordinator of Guelph Black Heritage Society, and one of the leading faces of the Black Lives Matter march in Downtown Guelph this past June. Issues of racism and inequality have not gone away in the last four months, but the intention of this week's podcast is to check on our progress. Kween joins us this week to talk about how it felt to stand up in front of thousands of her fellow Guelphites, and how she’s been coping by making herself the face of the cause. She also talks about the sometimes difficult conversations she’s had with the Chief of Police and the especially difficult discussions she’s tried to start with the people that send her racist comments. She also discusses the bigger issues for all of us, like recognizing our own privilege, and how we can measure progress on equality and social justice in the immediate future. So let's catch up with Kween on this week's edition of the Guelph Politicast! The Guelph Black Heritage Society is trying to raise $135,000 to create an education fund, and you can go to their website, or look for the hashtag #ChangeStartsNow to learn more. You can also check out the first episode of Diverse and Converse tonight at 9 pm on Rogers Channel 20. The host for the Guelph Politicast is Podbean. Find more episodes of the Politicast here, or download them on your favourite podcast app at Apple Podcasts, Stitcher, Google Play, and Spotify. Also, when you subscribe to the Guelph Politicast channel and you will also get an episode of Open Sources Guelph every Monday, and an episode of End Credits every Friday.

On this episode I talked with Brian Bogert. You probably know of Brian but if you don't you'll definitely know the restaurants and bars he and his business partner Manny own. They started with Texadelphia but have recently sold it. Currently the have The Jones Assembly, Fuzzys, Seven 47 and soon Spark. Here's a little about their story. "We have been bringing social hospitality to Oklahoma for close to two decades. We are a group of fun-seekers, game-changers and food enthusiasts. We play hard, but work harder, always keeping our head on a swivel. After graduating from SMU and quitting their corporate jobs, best friends Brian Bogert and Manny Leclercq brought one of their favorite college hangouts to Norman, OK. Texadelphia opened on the corner of Lindsey & Berry in 2003. From there, Seven47 was born and has turned into a landmark on OU’s Campus Corner. In 2010 we franchised the Fort Worth based, Fuzzy’s Taco Shop. 10 years and 7 locations later, Fuzzy’s quickly turned into our bread and butter. The same year Fuzzy’s became part of our brand, a second Texadelphia location was added to the landscape of Lower Bricktown. But it wasn’t until 2016 when The Social Order really came to life. With The Jones Assembly on the verge of opening it was time to bring these individual concepts together as one family. The Jones Assembly put us on the map as it is the largest concept and biggest endeavor we have undertaken yet. While concepts have come and gone (Texadelphia was sold back to Texas corporate in 2020), we are proud of the community The Social Order has created in Oklahoma. We are invested in the renaissance and continued growth of our great state of Oklahoma. Whether it’s creating a new concept or furthering the success of an existing brand, we believe in raising our standards and never settling for less than the best. Every Restaurant. Every Team. Every Time."Brian was a pretty decent tennis player in Highschool winning state championships in his sleep but decided to pursue a career and not tennis, going to SNU in Dallas. He's recently stepped down as their coach after winning I believe its 8 state championships for Heritage Hall. He had to step down to focus more on the business and as you can imagine COVID19 has all of his attention. Really appreciate Brians time and what he and Manny have done for Norman and OKC in the restaurant industry. Go follow him on Instagram @teambogie and also all their other businesses for news, events and more @socialorderdiningcollective @thejonesokc @fuzzysokla @seven47norman @eatatspark #thisisoklahoma

There's always some kind of drama lurking around Heritage Hall. This season it's all about dealing with some leadership changes with a new university president and trying to find a new athletic director, as well as the ever-shifting status of head coach Clay Helton. That's why we had to go straight to the source and talk to USCFootball.com's Ryan Abraham to get the facts behind what's going on with the Men of Troy. Dawgman.com's Kim Grinolds talked to Abraham about the embattled Helton and whether or not he has staying power as USC's head man. Abraham called the 26-13 win over Washington in 2016 the best win of Helton's career. They talked about USC's new offensive identity, trying to run the ball within the new Air Raid concepts brought in by Graham Harrell, whether or not quarterback Jack Sears will return to USC, who will back up Matt Fink if he gets hurt, will USC run the ball more to protect Fink on Saturday at Husky Stadium, and more. Defensively, they talked about the USC front, including true freshman defensive lineman Drake Jackson, their linebackers, the loss of Talanoa Hufanga and Olaijah Griffin, shoring up perceived tackling issues, and more. They also talked about the difference for the Trojans playing on the road, compared to in LA. According to Abraham, there's definitely a difference. Learn more about your ad choices. Day 1, all we do is practice communication. We go through every play that could be communicated in a game. People say kids today aren't as hard nosed as they used to be and are soft. I go completely against that. If you push your guys, treat them with respect and treat them like a young man, they'll work as hard as you want them to Kids aren't soft. Good luck next week!! Black-Eyed News: In a year of declining album sales, Justin Timberlake's The 20/20 Experience was the biggest selling album of 2013, according to Billboard. A total of 2.43 million copies sold. While the ranking is certainly an honor for Timberlake, it's less flattering for the record industry as a whole: The 20/20 Experience was the only album to sell over 2 million in 2013, which marks the lowest top-seller in SoundScan's 22 years of tracking sales. The previous low came in 2008, with Lil Wayne's Tha Carter III selling 2.87 million copies. Rounding out the top 10 was Eminem's acclaimed The Marshall Mathers LP 2 (1.73 million), Luke Bryan's Crash My Party (1.52 million), Imagine Dragons' Night Visions (1.4 million), Bruno Mars' Unorthodox Jukebox (just under 1.4 million), Florida Georgia Line's Here's to the Good Times (1.35 million), Drake's Nothing Was the Same (1.34 million), Beyoncé's surprise LP Beyoncé (1.3 million), Blake Shelton's Based on a True Story (1.11 million) and Jay Z's app-backed Magna Carta...Holy Grail (1.1 million). What do we think this means to the future of album sales? Total sold in top 10 14.67 Million average of 1.46 million per but 7 of those albums were not even close to that number. Editorial Aside: What is to blame for the low sales? Piracy claims the record company; the artists say streaming is the villain here. But how about the cost of an album at the store. Not a digital copy but a hard copy. I have seen them for as much as $18 in the store. Also quality some of the stuff is just not that good. Back to the Numbers: The top single sales were led by a different set of artists. Robin Thicke's ubiquitous "Blurred Lines" came in at Number One with 6.5 million sales. Mackemore and Ryan Lewis' "Thrift Shop" was a close second, with 6.15 million. The other top sellers were Imagine Dragons ("Radioactive," 5.5 million), Florida Georgia Line ("Cruise," 4.69 million), Lorde ("Royals," 4.42 million), Katy Perry ("Roar," 4.41 million), P!nk featuring Nate Ruess ("Just Give Me a Reason," 4.32 million), another from Macklemore and Ryan Lewis ("Can't Hold Us," 4.26 million), Bruno Mars ("When I Was Your Man," 3.93 million) and Rihanna ("Stay," 3.85 million). http://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/justin-timberlakes-20-20-experience-tops-2013-album-sales-20140103#ixzz2pZu3Stlq Phil Everly, whose hits with his older brother, Don, as the Everly Brothers carried the close fraternal harmonies of country tradition into pioneering rock ’n’ roll, died on Friday in Burbank, Calif. He was 74. The group’s official website said he died in a hospital near his home in Southern California. His son Jason said the cause of death was complications of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. With songs like “Wake Up Little Susie,” “Bye Bye Love,” “Cathy’s Clown,” “All I Have to Do Is Dream” and “When Will I Be Loved?,” which was written by Phil Everly, the brothers were consistent hitmakers in the late 1950s and early 1960s. They won over country, pop and even R&B listeners with a combination of clean-cut vocals and the rockabilly strum and twang of their guitars. They were also models for the next generations of rock vocal harmonies for the Beatles, Linda Ronstadt, Simon and Garfunkel and many others who recorded their songs and tried to emulate their precise, ringing vocal alchemy. The Everly Brothers were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in its first year, 1986. http://www.nytimes.com/2014/01/05/arts/music/phil-everly-half-of-pioneer-rock-duo-dies-at-74.html?hpw&rref=arts&_r=0 Blues man Tabby Thomas, a well known & widely influential Baton Rouge musician, club owner, radio DJ and recording artist, and the father of blues musician & actor Chris Thomas King, has passed away. He was 84 and just four days shy of his birthday. Born Ernest J. Thomas in Baton Rouge January 5th, 1929, Thomas owned and operated a blues club called Tabby’s Blues Box and Heritage Hall for nearly three decades until it’s closure in 2004. “There was something about Tabby’s Blues Box,” wrote Chelsea Brasted for the New Orleans Times Picayune, “An intangible quality seeped out of the joint on nights when legends were being made on its stage, solidifying its place in local music lore.” Thomas has long been one of the best known blues musicians in Baton Rouge. Having learned music in a local church Choir as a child, and following an Air Force stint, Tabby relocated to California and began a touring and recording career, notably with Hollywood Records and the well-known Excello Records label. Returning to Louisiana, Tabby’s records were quickly played on local radio on New Orleans’ WBOK. His music earned him a spot at New Orleans’ famed Dew Drop Inn venue — a premiere live blues room that was host to Sam Cooke, Ray Charles, Guitar Slim and dozens more top acts of the time. He caught the attention of Louis Armstrong, who arranged for the Eric Shaw Agency to book Thomas a tour. Tabby’s son, Grammy award winner Chris Thomas King, found his first experiences at the club that he helped his father create. He signed his first recording contract with Sire Records, a subsidiary of Warner Brothers, at Tabby’s Heritage Hall. King went on to sell more than ten million records, earning a Grammy for Album of the Year for his cover of Skip James’ “Hard Time Killing Floor Blues” track on the O! Brother Where Art Thou? soundtrack. King famously played bluesman Tommy Johnson in the film. http://www.americanbluesscene.com/2014/01/famed-baton-rouge-bluesman-passes-away/ Rolling Stone Magazine recently published a story reporting that Allman Brothers bass player Oteil Burbridge, the man who has been providing the lower end for the Allman Brothers for decades is leaving the band. Fans of the band immediately began protesting and about the shake-up. “We’re here to assure you that that is not true,” said Oteil, refuting the claim on Social Media, “and he will be playing with the Allman Brothers throughout 2014. Happy New Year and thank you to all the fans for your support!” Oteil also had this to say on his website: “For the record…. It was an amazing experience recording and playing with the Zac Brown Band and with Dave Grohl in November. It was an awesome time and a reunion of sorts for me with old friends Chris Fryar, Penn Robertson, and Eric Pretto (the drummer, bass tech and guitar tech for ZBB, respectively) who I’ve known for over a decade. I am proud to be part Zac’s record. 2014 will mark the beginning of my 16th year with the Allman Brothers and as we celebrate the bands 45th anniversary, it reminds me what a huge part of my musical life this incredible band has been. I’m really grateful and proud to be such a big part of the ABB history. And we ain’t done yet! I certainly hope to work with the Zac Brown Band again in the future. They are incredibly talented and great guys. Wherever I land in the future, I hope my fans understand that my primary concern is for the wellbeing of my family and will continue to bring you the highest level of groove and improv that I can muster.” http://www.americanbluesscene.com/2014/01/trucks-says-oteils-staying-put-despite-rolling-stone-story/ and Lastly Jack White has a new album in the works, and it looks like it could be coming out soon. In a recent chat with fans on the message board of his label, Third Man Records, White dropped the news: "I'm producing two albums this month, and finishing them," he said. "One of them is mine." Assuming White is referring to a solo album, this could mean a follow-up to 2012's Blunderbuss will be appearing shortly. In an interview with Rolling Stone last February, White mentioned that he had 20 to 25 songs already written. "It's definitely not one sound," he said of the new material. "It's definitely several. Like you heard in Blunderbuss, there's many different styles there. I don't pick my style and then write a song. I just write whatever comes out of me, and whatever style it is is what it is, and it becomes something later." http://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/jack-white-finishing-up-new-album-20140105#ixzz2pZxGOBhK Blues In The Area: 1/10 FRIDAY Ronnie Earl - The Katherine Hepburn Center for the Arts (8pm) - Old Saybrook, CT Dan Stevens - Perks & Corks (9pm) - Westerly, RI Johnny Hoy & the Bluefish - Chan's (8pm) - Woonsocket, RI Blues Alley - The Mona Lisa Restaurant (8-11pm) - Wolcott, CT Eight To The Bar - The Knickerbocker Cafe (8pm) - Westerly, RI 1/11 SATURDAY The Alexis P.
