Alexandra Dowding and her family nearly died from a silent killer - carbon monoxide. The odorless, invisible gas made them very sick and forced them out of their West Warwick home. In this episode, Dowding joins Dr. Philip Chan, along with Jason Rhodes, RIDOH's Chief of the Center for Emergency Medical Services to talk about what you need to know and how you can protect yourself and your loved ones from carbon monoxide poisoning.
On February 20th, 2003, the rock band Great White took the stage at The Station nightclub in West Warwick, Rhode Island. But when they began their set by igniting pyrotechnic sparklers, a fire broke out and ripped up the walls before quickly spreading to the rest of the building. Veteran journalist Scott James says people had only about ninety seconds to react and escape. Unanswered questions about the disaster led him to spend years investigating what happened. Today, James joins Lindsay to talk about his book, Trial By Fire: A Devastating Tragedy, 100 Lives Lost, and A 15-Year Search for Truth.Be the first to know about Wondery's newest podcasts, curated recommendations, and more! Send us a textStation Nightclub Fire 2003-Scott James wrote the definitive book on the Station Nightclub Fire, in West Warwick, Rhode Island. The book "Trial By Fire" takes the reader by the lapels and propels them trough the actual fire and the grisly aftermath. The author also sheds light on some inaccurate local reporting and political maneuvering, that was uniquely Rhode Island. So many things had to go wrong at the same time in this case and they did. The difference between life and death was mere seconds. Don't miss this episode! Insurance vs the Station Nightclub Fire Without giving my age away entirely, I will admit…I'm a child of the 80s. I've been lucky enough to have seen several of my favorite 80s artists perform their greatest hits. It never crossed my mind that something could go wrong during a concert and I might be in danger. But on February 2, 2003, more than 400 people who also loved the 1980s attended a concert at the Station Nightclub in West Warwick, Rhode Island. But that night, something went wrong. A fire broke out at the concert, resulting in 100 deaths and 230 injuries. When bad things like this happen—insurance should respond. That's what it's there to do. But what if the people responsible don't have enough insurance to compensate those affected by the disaster? Well, then things get complicated. This is a story about how small decisions can result in tragedy; how fire spreads faster than you imagine; and how the people who are responsible are sometimes not the people who are held accountable. Official Website: https://www.lawabidingbiker.com Did you buy a new Harley-Davidson and want to know if you should use a Vance and Hines FP4 tuner or a Screamin' Eagle Pro Street tuner? Well, you are in luck. We recently installed Harley-Davidson Screamin' Eagle stage 1 intakes, exhausts, and Pro Street Tuners on two police Electra Glides for a local police agency. Before I get into the tuner debate, let me tell you what Harley-Davidson intake and exhaust were chosen. The agency decided to go with all Harley-Davidson parts. They went with the Screamin' Eagle Ventilator Air Cleaner Kit and the Screamin' Eagle High-Flow Exhaust System with Street Cannon Mufflers. The exhaust headers are made of stainless steel and are much lighter than the stock headers. The difference in weight is very noticeable. The heat shields attach to mounts that are secured to the headers with the typical hose clamp with a bolt through the heat shield. While the resulting look isn't as clean the installation is much easier. SUPPORT US AND SHOP IN THE OFFICIAL LAW ABIDING BIKER STORE Vance & Hines has now released an alternative EPA compliant EFI tuner, the Fulepak 4. It can do all the same things as its little brother, the Fuelpak 3. The difference is that the only cams you'll be able to tune for are EPA compliant cams. And, that list of compliant cams will be added to over time within the Vance & Hines Fulepak 4 smartphone app. At the time of this article, they are supporting the Harley-Davidson 447 & 462 Screamin' Eagle EPA compliant cams. If you're just installing an intake and exhaust, certainly the Vance & Hines Fuelpak 4 is capable of that. Based on my experience, I'd definitely use the Vance and Hines Fuelpak 4 EFI tuner rather than the Screamin' Eagle Pro Street Tuner and I'll explain why. CHECK OUT OUR HUNDREDS OF FREE HELPFUL VIDEOS ON OUR YOUTUBE CHANNEL AND SUBSCRIBE! First, my personal experience tuning two police Harley-Davidson Electra Glides was not very good. Because Harley's Screamin' Eagle EFI tuner app is so glitchy, it made auto tuning the motorcycle very frustrating. I was finally able to tune the bikes after several attempts and then get it all uploaded into the motorcycle. I likely won't have to tune these bikes again and I don't even want to get back into the SE tuner via the app because it was such a bad experience. Just head over to the Harley Screamin' Eagle EFI tuner app for yourself and see the 2-star rating and all the negative written reviews. Also, go to the Harley SE Pro Stree Tuner product page and read the reviews. The comments are all true and you'll experience all the issues you read. Second, if you get the Screamin' Eagle Pro Street Tuner you'll forever be stuck within the Harley-Davidson ecosystem. That means you'll have to buy only Harley intakes, headers, pipes, cams etc. Whereas, with the Fuelpak 4, you'll have access to all of the same Harley's components along with other aftermarket exhaust, intakes, and cams. I say, keep yourself open with a Vance & Hines Fuelpak 4 from the Law Abiding Biker Store so you always have the option to install other aftermarket components and tune your motorcycle. And, the Fuelpak 4 is only $9 more than the SE tuner. NEW FREE VIDEO RELEASED: Can The Indian Sport Chief Compete With Harley's Low Rider S? I give you an honest real-world review of it. After a long wait, Indian finally set me a bike to review. Most reviewers only ride bikes for a short time. We took the Indian Pursuit on a weekend trip and put several hundred miles on it. After all, the Indian Pursuit is a touring bike and the only way to truly test it is to tour with it. This engine was amazing as far as power and performance are concerned. This is a 1768 cc engine and it produces 122 HP and 129 ft lbs torque at 3800 RPM. I found this motor definitely comes alive at 3800 RPM and above. There is plenty of passing power and throttle blips can bring the front tire off the ground. Every time I rolled the throttle I was smiling. CHECK OUT OUR HUNDREDS OF FREE HELPFUL VIDEOS ON OUR YOUTUBE CHANNEL AND SUBSCRIBE! I was very impressed with how the stock front suspension and rear suspension handled. The Indian Purusuit I had was equipped with the premium package and because of that, I could adjust the rear suspension preload within the Ride Command. This was amazing! In their last episode of 2022, Katie and Liz share the details of the devastating and deadly Station Nightclub Fire of 2003 in West Warwick, Rhode Island. A cold February night brought over 400 patrons to the club to watch the performance of heavy metal band Great White. Within seconds of the band arriving on stage, their tour manager set off unapproved pyrotechnics, which quickly ignited the acoustic foam surrounding the stage. Panic and confusion ensued quickly with a massive crowd crush occurring, as well as the release of poisonous gases from the flames. This event remains the 4th deadliest nightclub fire in American history, with exactly 100 perishing from the tragedy. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/truecrimene/support
A Rhode Island native, Ann was born in West Warwick and spent high school working as a Marsha Jordan Girl, modeling for the Jordan Marsh department store at the Warwick Mall. She majored in English at the University of Rhode Island, where she fell in love with Shakespeare, Willa Cather, and F. Scott Fitzgerald. In seventh grade, she read a book called How To Become An Airline Stewardess that fueled her desire to see the world. And that's just what she did when she graduated from URI—she went to work for TWA as a flight attendant. She wrote her first novel, Somewhere Off the Coast of Maine, on international flights and on the Train to the Plane, which was the subway out to JFK. It was published in 1987. Since then, she's published in The New York Times, The Paris Review, O, Bon Appetit, Tin House, The Atlantic Monthly, Real Simple, and other wonderful places; and has won two Pushcart Prizes, two Best American Food Writing Awards, Best American Spiritual Writing and Travel Writing Awards, and a Boston Public Library Literary Light Award. Ann is also a part of the Miami Book Fair this November.
Station Nightclub Fire 2003-Scott James wrote the definitive book on the Station Nightclub Fire, in West Warwick, Rhode Island. He is running for Congress to fight for the middle class and those working hard to join it. Seth will work to help Rhode Islanders keep up with the cost of living by protecting Social Security and Medicare, lowering the price of prescription drugs, and returning big oil company profits back to consumers. Seth will stand up for a woman's right to make her own health care decisions and pass common-sense gun safety legislation.Seth has served as Rhode Island's General Treasurer since 2015 where he has delivered results for the second congressional district by investing in education, job creation, and clean energy infrastructure. As Chair of the state's school building task force, Seth led a statewide school construction initiative that created over 28,000 jobs and repaired or replaced over 200 schools like Garden City Elementary School in Cranston and the soon-to-be-completed combined elementary school in Johnston. Seth also launched innovative clean energy financing programs that have helped cities and towns build out solar, wind and climate resiliency projects, saving taxpayers money and reducing fossil fuel emissions. With help from the programs Seth created, the town of West Warwick hasn't paid an electricity bill on any municipal building in five years. Over the last eight years, Seth has used his office to fight for things that matter to Rhode Islanders. He helped pass the Reproductive Privacy Act in 2019 that codified the protections of Roe v. Wade into state law, as well as common-sense gun measures like banning guns on school grounds and a red flag law to take guns out of the hands of domestic abusers. As a new parent, Seth will fight to build a country where everyone has a chance to achieve the American Dream like his family did. Seth's grandfathers were both sons of immigrants who grew up poor. Despite not having much, when they returned from World War II they were able to find good, middle-class jobs – Grandpa Bob as a steelworker in Worcester and his Grandpa Louis as a bookkeeper at a fruit canning company in New York. With those jobs, they bought homes, started families, and put their kids through college. Their kids, Seth's parents, both graduated from college and started a business together in Rhode Island, where Seth was raised and has served for the past eight years as General Treasurer. This was the American Dream that was so common a generation ago – the promise that with hard work and perseverance, each generation can leave a better life for their kids than they had for themselves. That American Dream of economic mobility has broken down for many families and was never afforded to others. Seth believes we can only restore the American Dream if we send representatives to Washington who will fight for working people and stand up to the extreme elements in Washington that put their own ambition ahead of doing what is right. Seth has spent his career fighting for working Rhode Islanders, and is ready to bring that fight to Washington.
