In a presentation of the findings before the House Appropriations Committee at the state Capitol in Richmond Tuesday, Colleen Miller, the dLCV's executive director, urged lawmakers to end the criminalization of mental illness, remove law enforcement from the state's response...Article LinkSupport the show

In local news, the Hunger and Health Coalition raised more than 9,000 dollars on March 18th. According to the Watauga Democrat, the empty bowls event is held annually at Watauga High School and is organized through Watauga High School's National Art Society. Participants at the event purchase a ticket which allows them to select a handmade bowl, their choice of soup provided by local restaurants, and a dessert. Many of the soup and dessert vendors were from local restaurants in Boone and the surrounding area. The event also featured a silent auction with items donated from various local businesses. In total, the empty bowls event raised 9,500 dollars for the Hunger and Health Coalition which seeks to provide fresh food and prescription medication access to members of the high country. In state news, a Raleigh teacher and coach was arrested Tuesday on charges of sexual misconduct with a student. According to WRAL, Almando Kilpatrick Brown, a physical education teacher and assistant football coach, was charged with attempting a sex act with a student and taking indecent liberties with a student. According to the arrest warrant, both charges involve the same student at the high school with the incident supposedly occurring in January. Brown's employment at the school ended on Friday. The state alleges that a month ago parents contacted Raleigh police about sexual conversations their daughter had with Brown and sexually explicit communications on Instagram. Brown is currently being held on a $50,000 bail. In national news, surveillance video from a Virginia psychiatric facility shows seven sheriff's deputies and three hospital employees piling on top of a 28-year-old Black man for 11 minutes until he stopped moving. According to NPR, a grand jury issued indictments on charges of second-degree murder against 10 people who were charged last week in the March 6 death of Irvo Otieno. The video shows sheriff's deputies dragging a handcuffed and shirtless Otieno into a largely empty room in Central State Hospital with several small tables and placing him on some sort of seat. Several minutes later, the deputies moved Otieno to the floor and start to pile on top of him. Now to sports. App State Baseball is heading into conference play. After winning the series at Marshall 2-1, the team will play their first home series against Georgia State looking to capitalize on the road series win. Every home series is going to be important to the mountaineers in order for them to keep up with a challenging sun belt conference. March Madness is in full swing, but the coach for Fairleigh Dickenson has already been promoted as a result the team's performance. After the team became the second 16 seed to ever beat a 1 seed in the men's college basketball tournament, coach Tobin Anderson agreed to a five year deal to coach for Iona, after their coach Rick Pitino left Iona for St John's. He was a finalist for the Iona job back in 2020 before the gales picked Pitino, but he likely would not have gotten the job if Fairleigh Dickenson was unable to beat Purdue. Elsewhere in the tournament, some notable results include fifteen seeded Princeton making it to the sweet 16, top seeded Kansas losing to Arkansas in the second round, and only one ACC team, the Miami Hurricanes, making it to the sweet 16. In NFL news, Cam Newton is trying to make a comeback. The best quarterback in Carolina Panthers history will participate in Auburn's pro day. Episode Notes The 7th Annual UVA Flute Forum took place this past weekend. A few weeks ago, a man in custody at Central State Hospital was killed. Now seven deputies involved in the incident have been charged with murder. Some Virginia election officials are resigning in the face of threats and harassment--with some counties facing empty offices entirely. Virginia has a State Corporation Commission, but it still has just one member. House Republicans and Senate Democrats cannot agree on how to fill to empty seats. After the Silicon Valley Bank went belly-up earlier this month, the federal government promised to bail out its wealthy account holders. At one time, federal regulations would have prevented this kind of bank failure--but a 2018 law co-sponsored by Virginia Senators Tim Kaine and Mark Warner loosened restrictions on mid-sized banks. A new government report sheds light on a need for clarity on “earned wage access” programs--drawing parallels to the payday loan issues of the last decade.

Welcome back, Creeps and Freaks! This week we bring you our special guest, Kayla! She joins us as we talk about Central State Hospital, the history and hauntings.
Krysti starts off with another Central State Hospital but this one is in Kentucky. This is a current psychiatric hospital still in operation in Anchorage Kentucky. This hospital soon became plagued with the unfortunate problems that seem to haunt all old psych hospitals, overcrowding, abuse, and inhumane conditions. Cue some patient deaths, abuse investigations, and some shady “treatment” options and eventually the hospital had to change it's ways, somewhat… Eventually this hospital had to change and the original buildings were demolished. This land became E.P. “Tom” Sawyer State Park. Apparently some of the former patients remain on these grounds to this day. From a unburied “sauerkraut” cave to small children spirits saying “mommy” this is still a spooky place to visit. Tori heads north from there to Cleveland Ohio and the Hans Tiedemann House a.k.a Franklin Castle. As one of the “most haunted places in America” this locale manages to end up on most haunted house lists out there. This home to the Tiedemann family saw loads of death within the first five years of it being built. After several deaths Hans sold his Victorian “castle” to the German Socialist Party in 1913. Cue some spy stories, Nazi tunnels, and bootleg booze, this was owned by the German Socialist Party until James Romano bought it in 1968. This family stayed for only 6 years before the “ghosts” drove them off. Add in fires, secret tunnels, human remains, and mysterious fires this place became notorious in the Midwest. Jerry Marzinsky is a retired licensed psychotherapist with over 35 years of experience working with and studying the thought processes of psychotic and criminally insane patients in some of the most volatile psychiatric institutions in the nation. (Click here to read the full resume). He began his career at Central State Hospital, at the time the largest psychiatric hospital on the planet. It was there that he first noticed blatant contradictions between what had been taught about schizophrenia by the Ivory Tower and what he was witnessing and learning from his schizophrenic patients. After leaving the state hospital, Jerry went on to work in various front-line mental health settings including state prisons, county and private psychiatric hospitals, mental health centers, and hospital emergency rooms. Over the course of his career, he questioned scores of schizophrenic patients extracting information about their voices which psychiatry deemed hallucinations unworthy of investigation. Years of probing resulted in the discovery that not only did these voices run consistently repeatable and predictably negative patterns very different from all other hallucinations, but that it was possible to hold coherent conversations with them apart from the patient. After years of probing, Jerry determined that not only were the voices not meaningless hallucinations as psychiatry insisted, but they were the very force that drove paranoid schizophrenia. This resulted in a series of trial and error experiments in search of methods to disrupt them. As increasingly favorable methods were found, a conclusion became clear. If the voices could be silenced by any means for a prolonged time, all symptoms of paranoid schizophrenia vanished and the patient returned to normal. This began a search for the most effective methods of disrupting the voices that didn't rely on psychiatry's expensive and toxic pharmaceuticals which cured nothing and merely temporarily suppressed psychotic symptoms. Over time, solutions were found which resulted in the complete cure for many cases; a phenomenon the establishment insists doesn't exist. Jerry retired as a psychiatric evaluator in 2015 after working psych crisis in hospital emergency rooms for the last ten years of his career. It was only after retiring that he felt free to speak about these findings and challenge the dismal failure of our expensive, pharmaceutically fueled merry-go-round of a mental health system.*** ***bio excerpt copied from Jerry's website If you have questions or comments for Jerry Marzinsky feel free to reach out to him by visiting his website http://jerrymarzinsky.com Streamed LIVE September 18, 2021 If you enjoy the show and wish to help us continue asking questions whilst sharing a laugh please consider donating any amount if you're able. Central State Hospital, originally known as the Central Lunatic Asylum, was the first all-black psychiatric hospital in Virginia. While the facilities were ahead of their time, lack of funds led to understaffing and overcrowding. This led to mistreatment of patients and a huge scandal uncovered in the 1980s. Since our show in 2019 about the Indiana Medical History Museum, news has unfolded related to the museum, which is housed in a building that was part of the historic campus of the former Central State Hospital, a psychiatric facility in Indianapolis that closed in 1994. Some of the developments concern the efforts of the Indiana Medical History Museum to identify the unmarked graves of patients who were buried in a long-neglected nearby cemetery. Last November, the museum issued a public protest when utility-related construction authorized by the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department disrupted the interred remains of some patients who died between 1848 and 1905. When Sarah Halter, executive director of the museum, is Nelson's guest, she will provide updates about the cemetery project. Some aspects have been resolved, according to Sarah. The remains of the patients affected by the utility work have been carefully exhumed by archaeologists and will be reinterred elsewhere. But other aspects of the museum's cemetery initiatives have yet to reach a resolution. The cemetery is on land owned by the city and used by the police department for its horse patrol. The cemetery initiatives are part of an expanded focus at the museum to humanize the former patients at the psychiatric hospital that Sarah will describe during our show. They include, she says, "a new, permanent re-interpretation of our specimen collection that emphasizes the humanity of these specimens and tells the stories of the people from whom they came." In addition to the museum's exhibits conveying the stories of patients at Central State, many of the personal stories now can be viewed online, with new accounts added periodically. "We hope that these projects will not only re-humanize the patients, who were too often left out of the story, but also combat stigma and foster compassion and respect for all people, past and present, who experience mental health issues," Sarah says. The museum is housed in a brick structure once known as the Old Pathology Building. During the 1890s, brain research considered groundbreaking for its era was conducted in clinical labs in the building, which also had an autopsy room and an amphitheater for lectures to medical students. During our show, Sarah will describe the development underway of a project called Voices from Central State. Designed to be a "memory archive/forum," it will serve as an online platform for people with a range of connections to Central State to share stories and photos as well as engage in discussion.

Lorena Bobbitt was born October 31, 1970 in Bucay, Ecuador. Not much is documented about her life until she married John Bobbitt in 1989. On June 23, 1993 Bobbitt claimed that her husband raped her. This wasn’t an uncommon occurrence and she had suffered other forms of physical and mental abuse from him. That night, after he went to sleep, she went to the kitchen and grabbed a carving knife. She then returned to her bedroom and cut off his penis. Bobbitt then left the apartment with the severed appendage and drove away. After a while she threw it out of the window then stopped to call 911, telling the police what happened. The appendage was later found and reattached. Bobbitt was tried for her crimes. During the trial vendors sold shirts that said “Love hurts” and penis-shaped candy. John was charged with marital sexual assault. During this time period, marital rape was a relatively new crime and the law made it almost impossible to prove. He was arrested several more times and has served jail time for assault. In court she testified that he sexually, physically, and emotionally abused her during their marriage. Her attorneys claimed that all the abuse made her snap and that because of the abuse she was suffering from depression and PTSD. John denied the claims but, during cross examination his statements would conflict. John was later acquitted of rape and she was found not guilty due to insanity. As a result she had to undergo a 45 day evaluation at Central State Hospital, after which she was released. In 1995 the two divorced. John went on to form a band and star in two porn films. He was also a regular on the Howard Stern show. This case received a lot of media attention. Terms like the "Bobbittized punishment" and "Bobbitt Procedure" became common and the Bobbitt worm was named after this case. After Lorena served a short sentence in a mental hospital she went back to her life as a manicurist. She remarried and had one child. She also formed a charity called Lorena’s Red Wagon which helps survivors of domestic violence.

Indiana Hospital for the Insane opened in 1848 after the first five patients were admitted into the sprawling 160-acre property. What later became known as Central State Hospital was located inside Indianapolis on the west side and was almost a small city itself. Doctors there were pushing the limits with cutting edge technology, all in order to diagnose and cure diseases of the body and mind. However, it would take decades of abuse and neglect before members of the government would be forced to acknowledge the crumbling institution that was Central State Hospital and the deaths that had taken place there. Listen now to find out just how much time Karla and Danielle's great-great grandmother spent inside the insane asylum! "Schizophrenia is one of the top ten health problems in the world. The establishment continues barking up the wrong tree futilely pushing their chemical imbalance theory which has many times over been proven false. They have no solution and no cure. We do. They aren’t going to like it." - Jerry MarzinskyAre your thoughts your own? Let's take a fascinating voyage through the psychotic mind into the presence of another world. What do the voices say? You may realize that we all hear the voices, some just hear them louder. Are schizophrenic voices supernatural psychic parasites preying on humanity and guiding us to discord?Schizophrenia is a mental disorder characterized by abnormal social behavior and failure to understand reality. Common symptoms include false beliefs, unclear or confused thinking, hearing voices that others do not, reduced social engagement and emotional expression, and a lack of motivation.Jerry Marzinsky has over thirty years experience working with Psychiatric Patients in both the Arizona Prison System and as the Psychiatric Rehabilitation Counselor Senior at Yarbrough Psychiatric Rehabilitation Center, Central State Hospital, Milledgeville, Georgia. He is also an avid explorer of nature and things that go bump in the night. .Jerry's Youtubekeyholejourney.comJerry spent time working as a mental health counselor in the Prison System and found that many of the prisoners who were regarded as schizophrenics or mentally unstable were likewise being tormented by voices. These “voices” can give detailed instructions to individuals and even seem to be familiar with distant geography and the future behavior of people. This is one of the most important interviews ever given by a mental health expert with a verifiable background. Jerry has been in the trenches healing people tormented by negative entities. Jerry also talks about the true nature of the PhD training in the Psychiatric field and how it is meant to brainwash the prospective PhD’s into believing what they are told and doing what the system wants them to do. Psychiatrists became angered at Jerry when they found out he was asking patients about the voices they were hearing. Jerry quit the PhD program in disgust when he found out what it was all about.

The Hogg Foundation for Mental Health is on a mission, not just to catalyze systemic reforms in mental health, but also to use our accumulated knowledge and platform to address some of the world's most vexing problems. In this episode, former Hogg executive director Dr. King Davis, in a wide-ranging discussion, talks about his monumental effort to digitize the archive of patient records of Central State Hospital, historically known as the Central Lunatic Asylum for Colored Insane. He also comments on the present moment, and the deep implications of the policy stagnation that has marked the Age of Obama.
Assessing how far we've come in our treatment of persons with mental illness demands that we understand where we've been. In this episode of Into the Fold, Dr. Patricia Galloway discusses the monumental effort to digitally preserve patient records from the segregation-era Central Lunatic Asylum for Colored Insane (now Central State Hospital). A key collaborator on the project, which is headed by former Hogg Foundation executive director Dr. King Davis, Galloway discusses the ongoing work to transform this trove of records into a publically accessible archive, the challenges of long term preservation, the key stakeholders in the project, and how the archive is deepening our understanding of the evolution of treatment standards for persons with serious mental illness. Galloway is Professor of Digital Archiving and Archival Enterprise in the School of Information at The University of Texas at Austin.
