The Power Hour is a weekly podcast that discusses the most interesting energy and environmental policy issues of the day with top national experts. Jack is joined this week by Glen Lyons, one of the nation's leading and most innovative thinkers on electricity markets. Glen has worked in the gas and oil industry and served as a member of ERCOT, the body that regulates Texas' electricity grid and is now the founder and Chief Advocate for Advocates for Consumer Regulated Electricity. This conversation is not only interesting but very timely and important as states around the nation are trying to figure out how to ensure that we are producing enough power to ensure that families and businesses have enough power to meet ever growing demand. Unlike the usual proposals to regulate and subsidize more, Glen has developed an approach that puts energy users in charge. On this week's Talking Michigan Transportation podcast, a conversation with Jeff Farrah, executive director of the Autonomous Vehicle Industry Association (AVIA). As discussed in previous installments, U.S. traffic deaths jumped 10.5 percent in 2021 to 42,915, marking the highest number killed on American roads in a single year since 2005. Farrah talks about the safety benefits of autonomous vehicles, both in terms of passenger vehicles and commercial trucks. He observes that many vehicles on the road today have driver assistance technologies, which help to save lives. The evolution of the technology will only enhance those safety benefits. On next week's edition, the focus on safety continues as Jake Nelson, director of traffic safety advocacy and research for AAA, joins the podcast to talk about the troubling crash data and what can be done.
Tim Costello is one of Australia's most well-known and respected community leaders. In recent times he was voted one of Australia's 100 national living treasures. A recipient of Victorian of the Year and Victoria's Australian of the Year accolades, as well as an Officer of the Order of Australia, he is an influential leader on a range of social issues, including the huge harm caused by the scourge of gambling in Australia.Tim is a previous longtime CEO of World Vision Australia and has helped lead the response to some of the greatest humanitarian disasters of recent times, including the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami. A former Lawyer, Tim is a man with many hats. He's the Director of Ethical Voice, Executive Director of Micah Australia, Chair of the Community Council of Australia, Senior Fellow for the Centre for Public Christianity, and Chief Advocate for the Alliance for Gambling Reform. He is also the Chief Advocate of the Thriving Communities Partnership and Patron of the National Youth Commission. He's also the author of several books, including his excellent memoir, A Lot with a Little, which I highly recommend. I particularly enjoyed the section of that book that describes Tim and his wife Merridie's journey in building a congregation at St Kilda Baptist Church and an accompanying drop-in centre and outreach program. It was from here that Tim's advocacy grew and he later went on to become the Mayor of St Kilda, where he developed a reputation as an outspoken social and political voice for change, a voice that is very much a voice of love and courage.
I help my clients identify and articulate their life's goals and aspirations and then design financial strategies they can employ to successfully move into their future with confidence and peace of mind. With Ziyana Kotadia and Karen Campbell. Content note: this episode addresses sexual violence. Too Scared to Learn: Women, Violence, and Education by Jenny Horsman (2013) uncovers how violence negatively impacts a student's ability to learn. It focusses on women's literacy, but the broader lesson is clear. None of us can properly learn when we're scared and targeted. This has huge implications for girls, women, and gender-diverse students in all schools, as well as huge implications for post-secondary environments like colleges and universities, where sexual violence is a particular problem. It's the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, a great time to talk about ending sexual violence on campus. Our first guest is Ziyana Kotadia, an advocate and writer in her final year of an Honours Specialization in Global Gender Studies and a Minor in Feminist, Queer and Critical Race Theory from Western University and Huron University College. She's Chair of the Safe Campus Coalition and a contributor to the Our Campus, Our Safety Action Plan, a call for action from students all over Canada. Ziyana is passionate about poetry, performance, and politics and has a keen interest in exploring intersections among the worlds of academia, art, and advocacy. She was the 2021-2022 Vice-President University Affairs for Western's University Students' Council, one of the nation's leading student organizations, where she championed gender equity projects and the voices of over 35,000 undergraduate and professional students as the Chief Advocate and Stakeholder Relations Manager to the university's senior administration. Her most recent publications include her op-ed “Universities Need a Consent Awareness Week in Ontario” in the ‘Toronto Star', her second-place winning poem "Heir to A Garden Heart" in ‘Symposium', and her academic article "Poetry, Prayer, and Politics: An Autoethnographic Exploration of Womanhood in the Canadian Ugandan Khoja Ismaili Diaspora" in ‘Liberated Arts: A Journal for Undergraduate Research'. Our second guest, Karen Campbell, Director of Community Initiatives & Policy at the Canadian Women's Foundation. She speaks new research we did in collaboration with the McGill University iMPACTS initiative, documented in a report entitled: Social Media and Mobilizing Change for Community Impacts. It explores the connection between students, social media, and sexual assault on university and college campuses. Show Sponsor—Accessibe Did you know that 98% of websites cannot be accessed properly by people with disabilities? Chances are your site has issues that not only frustrate many of your users but could lead to significant fines. For example, if your site is found to violate the Americans with Disabilities Act, your first violation could result in a penalty of $55,000 to $75,000. And additional violations can result in a $150,000 fine. The ADA applies to all businesses—and there are many other accessibility-related laws to consider—so it's not something you should ignore. Several years ago, Target paid a $6 million settlement on a lawsuit brought by the National Federation of the Blind. Domino's Pizza also lost a lengthy lawsuit by a blind man who sued the chain when he was unable to order pizza off Domino's website or mobile app—even with screen reading technology. The good news is that it's easy to check your site for any compliance issues, fix them quickly and make your site user-friendly for everyone. AccessiBe is the first and only AI-powered solution that makes it easy and affordable to add ADA, Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1, Section 508 and other compliance legislation to your website. This is a podcast where we sit down with some very successful people from the world of business, entertainment and sport about their life's journey and what got them to the position that they're in today. In today's episode we are chatting with Tim Costello We've already heard from Tim's brother Peter Costello on the podcast and they're a family we wouldn't mind having a cup of tea and watching the footy with. Tim Costello is one of Australia's leading voices on social justice and global poverty and has been instrumental in ensuring these issues are placed on the national and international agenda. He grew up in Melbourne and practised criminal and family law where he saw some of the darker sides of the justice system. He travelled the world for work in poverty alleviation and emergency relief as he led World Vision in Australia for thirteen years. Tim was the Chief Executive Officer and Chief Advocate of World Vision Australia. He has authored a number of books on faith and life. In 2014 Tim was elected as one of Australia's 100 national living treasures. He was named in the Australian of the Year awards in 2006 and was made an Officer of the Order of Australia in 2005. Being a leader didn't necessarily come naturally to Tim but his take on what it is to be a leader is refreshing.
