What do you do when the version of yourself that's winning is also the version that's breaking? You know the feeling, hitting every number, saying yes to everything, and still walking away from the day feeling like you performed it rather than lived it. Now imagine finding the exact moment that stopped working, and the one small shift that got you back. Most high performers don't burn out overnight. It happens one performance at a time, right up until the body forces the stop, mid show, mid meeting, mid life.Christian O'Connell has hosted the #1 breakfast radio show in 2 different countries, the only person to do it. He built that success on a persona so complete he stopped recognising himself underneath it, until panic attacks started hitting him minutes before airtime. Christian walks you through the exact mental skill that pulled him out of it, the same one he now teaches others to use before they hit their own breaking point. You can keep performing until something forces you to stop. There is a version of leadership that looks effortless from the outside. The one where the leader always has the answers, always holds the vision, always appears composed. And then there is the version that happens in private, at 5:00 AM, when your mind is rehearsing every possible failure and no one can see it. What surprises most people is how often those two versions belong to the same person. In part two of my conversation with Christian O'Connell, breakfast radio host heard by hundreds of thousands of Australians every morning, we get into the parts of leadership nobody talks about publicly. Christian opens up about the loneliness of leading a team, the night he finally put his thoughts on a whiteboard and told his people the truth about how he'd been feeling, and why he believes his next book will be about leadership because nobody warned him how hard it would be. If you have ever found yourself carrying something heavy at work and deciding the most responsible thing to do as a leader is keep it to yourself, this conversation will make you question whether that instinct is actually protecting your team or just protecting you. Christian and I discuss: Why confidence is the wrong thing to aim for before you speak in public What happened when Christian finally stopped pretending everything was fine with his team The one thing that does more for a team than any solution or action plan Why 5am is the worst possible time to trust your own thoughts The David Letterman line that changed how Christian thinks about taking risks Why Christian considers himself an accidental leader, and what he's doing about it Key quotes "Confidence is something that catches up. Momentum is more important." "It's a beautiful thing, leadership. If you get it right, it's a path of aliveness and transformation. If you get it wrong, it's the opposite." OS PLANOS DE DEUS NÃO FALHAM - CHRISTIANO GUIMARÃES by Sara Sede Brasília
I think there's a critical opportunity for someone here. Mathematicians are feeling the doom (mostly in the "lose our jobs" sense). Academics are freaking out about the daily news that amateurs are asking GPT "prove career-defining theorem, make no mistakes" and it's just working. Senior researchers are leaving for frontier AI labs. Many are mentally spiralling or flailing about their life's work not mattering anymore. Last year, when I tried explaining IABIED to colleagues, I would be met with incredulous stares. This year, I'm met with incredulous stares and "So what should I do now?" (I don't have a good answer for them, which is part of why I'm posting this.) I've quarantined AI discussions on my research discord because otherwise it would overwhelm everything else. Top mathematicians, people on par in mathematical ability with Critch, Christiano, and Steinhardt, people who have been running leading-edge research groups for decades, people with enormous soft power in academic circles, are going to OpenAI without even having considered x-risk for five minutes. Many more will be leaving soon. If you want these folks to hear something at all, to consider some other option in the rest [...] --- First published: July 23rd, 2026 Source: https://www.lesswrong.com/posts/zKCGq2bbCQrpCNc3W/mathematicians-are-feeling-the-doom --- Narrated by TYPE III AUDIO.
** Grab tickets for The Energy Game Melbourne launch (29 July, 6:30pm) here and order The Energy Game book here.** What if the stories you're most afraid to tell are the ones people most need to hear? Christian O'Connell has spent 28 years pulling stories out of strangers on live radio. He's had two number one breakfast shows on opposite sides of the planet. And yet off-air, he still catches himself at dinner with his family thinking he hasn't said anything funny in a couple of minutes, and that inner critic starting to spiral. In part one of our two-part conversation, I sit down with Christian to explore what he's learned from nearly three decades of live storytelling - and why most of us are telling our stories all wrong. Whether you tell stories for a living or you just want to hold a room for 30 seconds at a dinner party, this conversation will give you a completely different way to think about why some stories land and others don't. Christian and I discuss: The woodshed: the note-taking habit Christian uses so he's never stuck for something to say Why the stories you least want to tell are usually the ones that land hardest The two levels inside every story, and why most of us only ever tell one of them The physical test Christian uses to decide if a story is worth sharing Why the best storytellers relive rather than retell, and what that looks like in practice How speaking anxiety comes down to one thing, and it's not what most people think Key quotes "Vulnerability is the currency of great storytelling. If there's no vulnerability in here, there's no real connection in it." "The more you dial into the particulars of a story, somehow it becomes more universal." What if being a better parent had nothing to do with having the right answers? Beloved radio host and bestselling author Christian O'Connell joins Dr Justin Coulson for an honest conversation about anxiety, authenticity, and what it feels like when your children leave home. A forgotten ice-block wrapper tucked into the couch becomes a lesson in letting go. Christian also shares the simple approach that helped him stay connected with his daughters as they grew up. This episode is a reminder that your children don't need a perfect parent. They need you. KEY POINTS Why being present matters more than getting parenting right. What empty nest grief really feels like. How everyday moments become the memories that stay with us. Why children connect with parents who are genuine, not perfect. The habit that keeps kids talking through the teenage years. What living with anxiety taught Christian about parenting. QUOTE OF THE EPISODE "The number one job as a parent is to keep them talking." RESOURCES MENTIONED Unscript by Christian O'Connell No One Listens to Your Dad's Show by Christian O'Connell ACTION STEPS FOR PARENTS Stop searching for the perfect response. Be fully present instead. Listen for longer before offering advice. When your child opens up, keep the conversation going instead of trying to fix the problem. Pay attention to the ordinary moments. They often become the ones you'll remember most. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
What if confidence wasn't about becoming someone else, but finally allowing yourself to be who you've always been?In this honest and often hilarious conversation, Sarah Grynberg welcomes back beloved broadcaster, comedian and bestselling author Christian O'Connell to explore his new book, The Radical Act of Being Yourself. Together they unpack why so many of us silence ourselves, perform versions of who we think we should be, and lose confidence in the moments that matter most.Drawing on more than 30 years behind the microphone, Christian reveals why real confidence has almost nothing to do with saying the perfect thing, and everything to do with self-worth, vulnerability and connection. He opens up about anxiety and panic attacks, the practices that changed his relationship with fear, storytelling, grief, comedy and why laughter is one of the most powerful ways we connect. If you have ever second-guessed yourself, worried what others think, or felt like you're living by someone else's script, this episode is a reminder that everything shifts the moment you stop performing and start being yourself. You'll learn:Why true confidence comes from authenticity, not perfectionHow to quiet your inner critic and self-doubt before high-pressure momentsPractical tools to manage anxiety, panic attacks and nervousnessWhy vulnerability builds deeper relationships and trust than perfection ever couldHow storytelling, humour and honesty create real human connectionWhether you are navigating work, relationships, parenting, a hard conversation or your own self-talk, this is a conversation about confidence, courage and self-acceptance that will stay with you long after it ends.Follow A Life of Greatness for weekly conversations on mindset, confidence, personal growth, psychology and living with purpose.Chapters: 00:00 – Introduction 01:43 – Christian O'Connell returns to A Life of Greatness 04:28 – Why he finally wrote The Radical Act of Being Yourself 05:30 – Confidence, communication and self-worth 06:30 – Why authentic conversations change everything 08:03 – The terrifying speech that changed his life 11:18 – How to speak in public when you have no confidence 14:28 – Why memorising your words never works 17:26 – The Toy Story lesson that says everything about life 19:47 – Should you apply for jobs you're not qualified for? 22:40 – The conversations that quietly shape your life 24:14 – How to become more authentic 27:04 – Escaping the persona you built to survive 30:08 – Living with panic attacks before going live on air 34:25 – Why vulnerability is the key to real connection 36:43 – Breathwork, EFT and tools to overcome anxiety 42:38 – Spirituality, David Whyte and finding the sacred 45:37 – Why laughter is one of life's greatest gifts 51:12 – Can humour actually be learned? 54:52 – Finding extraordinary stories in an ordinary life 56:00 – Lessons on comedy from Ricky GervaisPurchase Christian's new book: The Radical Act of Being YourselfPurchase Sarah's book: Living A Life Of Greatness here.To purchase Living A Life of Greatness outside Australia here or here.Watch A Life of Greatness Episodes On Youtube here.Sign up for Sarah's newsletter (Greatness Guide) here.Purchase Sarah's Meditations here.

This morning on Christian O'Connell show, after a year of juggling two jobs and raising three young children, Alex has made the difficult decision to leave the show to focus on his family. It's clear that Alex will be deeply missed, but the decision to prioritize family is completely understood and respected. The team has been grateful for the time they've had with Alex, who has been a kind and loving presence. "I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my time on the Christian O’Connell show and the last year juggling three young children and two jobs has been chaotic, exhausting and a lot of fun. Working with Christian and the team has been a joy and a privilege, but the grind of holding down two jobs at both ends of the day was proving too much and something had to give. So, I’ve decided the time is right to put the early morning alarm clock away for a while, and concentrate my efforts on my TV roles and very energetic young family. Thank you to Christian and the team for the laughs and thank you to our wonderful audience who tune in every day. It’s been an honour.I wish Christian, Rio, Pats and the team all the very best in their continued success, and will listen on with the fondest of memories." - Alex CullenSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
