The fifth annual dolphin and whale count is taking place nation-wide this weekend. The count contributes both a snapshot at the same time every year, and information about the marine mammals close to shore across time. Whale and Dolphin Count Organiser, Christine Rose, told Tim Beveridge “We encourage people to go to the coastline and stare out to sea for a couple hours and report what you see.” Rose said “It's a celebration of the marine life we share our world with.” She said “We want people to be aware of the whales and dolphins that are in New Zealand – at this time of year humpbacks and Southern right whales are migrating from Antarctica to the tropics.” LISTEN ABOVE. Sail GP has abandonded ship on further races in Christchurch's Lyttleton Harbour without saying exactly why, but during the March event it's Chief Executive Russell Coutts was annoyed the first day of racing had to be abandoned because an endangered Hector's dolphin was on the course. Christine Rose from Maui & Hector's Dolphin Defenders speaks to Lisa Owen.
Dolphin advocates are celebrating SailGP's decision to move next year's event from Christchurch. SailGP announced the 2025 edition wouldn't return to Lyttelton Harbour, which has hosted for the last two years. In this year's event, the first day of racing was controversially cancelled due to a Hector's Dolphin spotting. Maui and Hector's Dolphin Defenders spokesperson Christine Rose told Mike Hosking that regulations are in place for anyone using boats in Hector's Dolphin habitats. She says those rules have to apply for everyone else, especially when the scale of impacts is greater. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Having SailGP in Lyttleton Harbour is being likened to planning a motorcross event in Kiwi habitats. SailGP CEO Russell Coutts slammed the cancellation of Saturday's racing after a dolphin was spotted on the course. He claims the species isn't endangered and are smart enough to be aware of the boats around them. Chair of Māui and Hector's Dolphin Defenders Christine Rose tells Kerre Woodham they were concerns for dolphin safety before the event went ahead. Rose says at this time of year, the Hectors dolphins are particularly vulnerable due to calves being slower swimmers and more shallow divers. There has been an increase in probable boat strike deaths of dolphins in the harbour and noise and other disturbances can also impact their ability to socialise and feed. Christine Rose joins us this week, to discuss her childhood, which included verbal and physical abuse, and her subsequent years growing up with multiple instances of sexual assault and even rape. Christine didn't report any of these instances because she simply thought this was 'normal behavior' or that it was somehow 'her fault'! It took nine specialists, and her then Husband to finally convince her that she had been the victim of rape, and it was then that she slipped into a deep mental health crisis. This was just the beginning of Christine's journey, as she discovered what PTSD meant, and was able to start processing her feelings and experiences. The next part of her story takes on more tough topics as her husband had a major accident, and they eventually split, just as Christine was beginning to start her healing process. Join us to hear how Christine survived, and better still started enjoying her life as an award-winning author, technical writer, digital nomad, and international pet sitter! She now blogs and writes about trauma recovery, providing tips and tools for managing psychiatric injury, depression, and anxiety. Her memoir, One Reason to Live, follows her healing journey after these multiple traumatic events and the end of a 15-year marriage.Website: https://christineroseauthor.com/FB: https://m.facebook.com/christineroseauthorX: https://x.com/christineroseIG: https://instagram.com/professor.roseSupport the show

There are concerns about Ashburton's high nitrate levels. Greenpeace undertook free water testing in the region over the weekend and 77 percent of samples had more than one milligram per litre of nitrate. Up to 11 percent exceeded the current nitrate standard of 11.3 milligrams per litre, including one at 25.7 milligrams. Lead campaigner Christine Rose says there's severe nitrate contamination in the region. "There's clear evidence that it's from big dairy, too many cows and too much synthetic nitrogen fertiliser." This week I sit down with Christine Rose at her home in London, to find out all about a job that most people aren't aware exists. Christine works behind the scenes in comedy and entertainment, writing jokes for shows including Have I Got News for You and 8 out of 10 Cats; chat-show monologues for the likes of Graham Norton and Alan Carr; and funny host scripts for awards ceremonies like the BAFTAs and the Brits. Christine won Best TV Comedy Writer at the Funny Women Awards last year, and in this episode she talks me through the making of shows like HIGNFY, what it's like trying to get jokes approved by awards-show organisers and celebrity hosts, and why she had to regretfully let go of a brilliant gag involving Joaquin Phoenix and Boris Johnson.
