(13:15) • Being not good made me good. (15:12) • Leaders talk about what they don't want to talk about, they say what they don't want to say, they listen to what they don't want to listen to, and they plan for what they don't want to happen. And the willingness to do that is what makes them a leader. (16:44) • I've always wanted to a part of something bigger than me that scared me a little bit that I was gonna have to work hard to keep up with. (22:08) • [I went to the Naval Academy because] I wanted to take care of my family, and I wanted to see how good I was. (28:58) • I told my service academy coaches all the time: You got guys ready for war as much as you did football. You have no idea how many lives you saved on the battlefield, because of what you taught us on the ball field. (30:05) • I gotta go where it's harder, because you're gonna learn about yourself when you go where you don't know. (33:23) • Ray [Lewis] stood up, and he grabbed me by both shoulders, and he said “Go be great! Go be great!” (33:38) • Think about what happens if you catch what you're chasing. (35:04) • I love doing something where every day you don't know how it's gonna end, and if you don't pick the right people along the way, you're not gonna make it. (44:47) • One of the things I love about our community is that the mission's bigger than any of us. (45:49) • When you lose people that you love sooner than you should, the worst thing you could ever do is waste the time you have that they don't. (52:56) • My favorite weapon is a map. (53:32) • I define my life as having live on 4 maps: the ball field, the battle field, the boardroom, and the breakfast table. (54:23) • The business plan is real simple:             Psalm 1:27             1 Peter 5:6-7             Galatians 6:9             Proverbs 22:29             Proverbs 27:2 (60:56) • C4 stands for Career, Compete, Contribute, have a Catalyst. (66:54) • Who are you chasing? Who are you keeping pace with? Who are you pulling behind you? (87:40)

Unsure how to process the emotions that hit him, CLint laced up his boots and went for a walk, leaving the meat on the grill. Clint is unsure how far he walked that day, but a few miles into his journey he encountered another veteran. That's what high performance is to me, the ability to adapt rapidly so you can achieve your potential. There are five key pillars to creating the conditions for adaptability: sleep, exercise, mental resilience, nutrition, and community/relationships.” - Dr. Erik Korem   “I maybe have a different concept on leadership. To me, leading is a verb. If you're leading, you're a leader. If you're swimming you're a swimmer, if you're driving you're a driver. If you're leading you're by definition a leader. I define leading as being looked to in a particular moment to make a decision or perform an action based on your unique gifts and abilities. So by that definition, everybody is a leader. All rank and role really describe is how many people are hoping you get it right when it's your turn to wear the weight.” - Clint Bruce "Attention is the currency of performance." - Dr. Peter Haberl “That's what I've discovered in the lives of brilliant, prolific, healthy creatives, is that they have networks of people they leverage in the course of their work. That they learn from, that they were challenged by, that they gave great insight and purview into their own life and work, in such a way that they were able to receive feedback that helped them get better at what they do.” - Todd Henry "Restful and fulfilling sleep enables you to grow, adapt, and thrive. It creates the conditions for adaptation, so you can pursue audacious goals and thrive in uncertainty." - Dr. Erik Korem "Most exercise programs fail, not because the reps and sets are poorly designed, but because the program doesn't adjust for how much stress your body can adapt to that day!. That's why Dr. Chris Morris' research and practical application of fluid periodization is the key for unlocking your performance potential." - Dr. Erik Korem See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Carry the Load co-founders Stephen Holley and Clint Bruce are both Navy SEAL Veterans. The idea for their initiative was born out of anger and frustration, feeling that Americans  were drifting away from the original purpose of Memorial Day.  On Memorial Day 2010 Clint decided to undergo physical pain as an emotional purge. He loaded his pack with one pound for every comrade he had lost. During that walk he encountered a WWII Veteran who asked him; “Who are you carrying son?” Stephen joins us to share more information about their organization. Stephen and Clint organized their first Carry the Load walk in 2011. The event raised $100,000. Their intent was to just organize a Memorial Day event but it has since grown to a year round series of activities across 48 states. Carry the Load has raised over $33 million for Veteran and First Responder charities. Interestingly, their grassroots growth has principally been driven by the 99% or our population who never served. Their goal this Memorial Day is to raise $2 million dollars. They have five national relays traveling 24 hours a day, seven days a week following different paths across the US. Those relays will cover a total of 20,000 miles during the month of May. There are also rallies schedule in many cities. If there is not an event near you, Stephen encourages you to form a team and conduct your own. There is no cost to register – YOU can make a donation or register to walk at their website. Veteran and First Responder organizations who would like to apply to be a beneficiary can do so in September of each year. Carry the Load has three principal focus areas; Raising awareness, funding continuum of care programs and inspiring patriotism in our nation's youth. TAKEAWAY: A critical element of each event is facilitating participants to share their “why” with each other. They walk because “you can't run and talk.”

That's what high performance is to me, the ability to adapt rapidly so you can achieve your potential. There are five key pillars to creating the conditions for adaptability: sleep, exercise, mental resilience, nutrition, and community/relationships.” Dr Erik Korem   “I maybe have a different concept on leadership. All rank and role really describe is how many people are hoping you get it right when it's your turn to wear the weight.” - Clint Bruce   John Danaher on high performance mindset and resilience:  “Whenever you are sparring, your mind will have a given direction of focus.
