Kevin Hovde is entering his third season as a Men's Basketball Assistant Coach at the University of Florida in 2024-25. Hovde, who has worked alongside Gators' Head Coach Todd Golden for nine seasons, helped Florida get back to the NCAA Tournament in 2024. The Gators posted 24 wins in 2023-24, their most since 2016-17, and advanced to the SEC Tournament championship game for the first time since 2014.Hovde came to Florida after most recently helping Richmond to the second round of the NCAA Tournament following an Atlantic 10 Tournament championship. Kevin joined the Richmond staff as an assistant coach in May 2021, returning to his alma mater after five seasons at the University of San Francisco, where he served as the team's associate coach on Golden's staff from 2019 to 2021. Prior to San Francisco, Hovde was on the staff at Columbia for five seasons, two alongside Golden. He joined the program as the director of basketball operations in 2011 and was promoted to assistant coach the following season. Coach Jason Allison shares his journey from growing up in Lincolnton, North Carolina to becoming a NCAA D1 men's basketball coach. He was a student-athlete at Liberty University and began his coaching career at Lynchburg Christian Academy. Coach Allison went onto coach at Lees-McRae College, Gaston Day School, and King College prior to joining the coaching staff at VMI. Allison spent nine seasons in Lexington working under Coach Duggar Baucom as the Associate Coach/Recruiting Coordinator. During his tenure at VMI, he helped lead the Keydets to three appearances in the Big South Tournament title game and to the semifinals of the 2014 CollegeInsider.com Tournament. Known for their high-octane offense, VMI led the nation in scoring six times. The Keydets eclipsed the 20-win plateau twice in Allison's nine seasons with the program, a feat that VMI achieved just three times in the 97 years prior. Coach Jim Fox hired him to be on his coaching staff at Appalachian State and spent his first four seasons as App State as an Assistant Coach, before being promoted to Associate Head Coach for the 2018-19 season. After Dustin Kerns was named the new Head Coach, Allison remained on staff as the Special Assistant to the Head Coach in 2019-20. Andre Cook is entering his 14th season as the Head Men's Basketball Coach at St. Edward's University in Austin, Texas.  He has led St. Edward's to nine winning seasons in his tenure with an overall record of 221-152 including a program record 30 wins in 2018-19. That season The Hilltoppers snagged the Heartland Conference Regular Season title, Heartland Conference Tournament Championship and advanced to the NCAA Regional Final while being ranked as high as #2 nationally during the season. Cook was named the 2019 Clarance Gaines Award winner, given by CollegeInsider.com to the Division II National Coach of the Year and NABC District Coach of the Year. Cook came to St. Edward's from Hudson Valley Community College, where he compiled an overall record of 119-40 in five seasons. He previously served as an assistant at Union College from 1994-1996 while earning his master's degree in teaching social studies.  Cook also coached basketball at Hudson Falls High School from 1996-2004 where he also taught and served as assistant principal. Cook played four years at Skidmore College and is in the top 10 in scoring at Skidmore with over 1,000 points. Guest: Josh Merkel, Randolph-Macon Head Coach    Randolph-Macon head coach Josh Merkel joins the Basketball Podcast to share lessons from building a national championship program. In 2021-22, Randolph Macon won its first national championship with the largest margin of victory in NCAA DIII history. The team won a program-best 33 games and capped a remarkable run of success for the program during Merkel's time there. Merkel has made four trips to the NCAA tourney and has the most NCAA wins in program history. He has been ODAC Coach of the Year five times and was named the Glenn Robinson National Coach of the Year during the 2020-21 and 2021-22 seasons. The program is 148-38 in Merkel's seven seasons as head coach. He also engineered a 12-0 record during the 2020-21 campaign. Currently Lubbock Christian is ranked number 1 in the nation in NCAA Division II men's basketball. They are now 19-1 this year, after losing their first game of the season over the weekend to Dallas Baptist University in Lone Star Conference Play. Coach Duncan is in his 11th season as the head coach at LCU and holds an overall record of 194 - 108. He has led the Chaps to 3 NCAA Division II national tournament appearances in a possible 6 opportunities. In 2021 Lubbock Christian won the Lone Star Conference Tournament Championship. Coach Duncan has successfully led Lubbock Christian's transition from NAIA to NCAA Division II as well as the transition from the Heartland Conference to the Lone Star Conference. In 2021, Duncan was named the Clarence Gaines D-II National Coach of the Year award recipient, presented annually by CollegeInsider.com. Today we welcome in one of the nations premier college basketball coaches Coach Pat Kelsey. After a highly successful 9 seasons at Winthrop, Coach Kelsey made the jump to the College of Charleston, a program rich in its history and tradition of great coaches. Pat Kelsey was named the 24th all-time head men's basketball coach at the College of Charleston on March 25, 2021. The fifth all-time winningest coach in the history of the Big South Conference, he resurrected the proud basketball tradition at Winthrop University, averaging 20.7 wins per season over the last nine years in Rock Hill, S.C. No other Big South program can tout more wins overall or more conference wins in that time span. Kelsey, 45, will lead yet another tradition-rich basketball program as College of Charleston ranks seventh all-time (.685) among the winningest programs in NCAA Division I history with the likes of Kentucky (.762), North Carolina (.735), Kansas (.727), Duke (.710), UCLA (.688) and UNLV (.687). The 2021 Big South Conference Coach of the Year most recently guided the Eagles to a 23-2 campaign, a school-record 21-game win streak and Big South tournament title, earning the league's automatic NCAA Tournament bid for a third time under his watch. The brand of basketball that Kelsey instilled in the Eagle program was an exciting one as it gained national recognition receiving votes in both The Associated Press and Coaches Top 25 Polls. The Eagles also ranked as high as No. 2 in the CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Top 25 Poll and led the conference in scoring offense, averaging 78.9 points per game, which ranked No. 31 nationally. A two-time finalist for the Skip Prosser Man of the Year Award and finalist for the 2021 Jim Phelan Coach of the Year Award, Kelsey compiled a 186-95 (.662) overall record and an impressive 110-46 (.705) mark in conference play. Winthrop also won the Big South regular-season title four times – in 2016, 2017, 2020 and 2021. In all, 16 Winthrop players were selected all-conference, while three were tabbed Big South Player of the Year, one Big South Freshman of the Year and two Big South Tournament Most Valuable Player. His previous coaching stops include his alma mater Xavier (2009-12), where he served as Associate Head Coach under Chris Mack as well as Wake Forest, where he served as Assistant Coach (2004-09) and Director of Basketball Operations (2001-04) under Dino Gaudio and the late Skip Prosser. Kelsey graduated cum laude in 1998 from Xavier University with a bachelor's degree in business administration and marketing. He began his collegiate playing career at the University of Wyoming, before transferring and playing three seasons at point guard for the Musketeers from 1995 to 1998. Guest: Robert Jones, Norfolk State Head Coach Norfolk State head coach Robert Jones joins the Basketball Podcast to discuss the floppy defense and the keys to his program's success. Head coach Robert Jones sets out on his ninth season leading the Norfolk State men's basketball program in 2021-22 and his 15th year overall with the Spartans. He led the program to its second-ever MEAC title in 2021 and an NCAA Tournament First Four win over Appalachian State. Jones' overall head coaching mark now stands at 142-119, including 92-32 in MEAC play. The 2019 MEAC Coach of the Year, Jones signed a five-year contract extension following the NCAA Tournament appearance, keeping him at the helm of the program through 2027-28. He has led NSU to a .742 win percentage in MEAC play – fifth in the nation among coaches with at least 100 games coached – and made six postseason appearances in seven years of postseason play. After serving as an assistant coach on NSU's first NCAA Tournament squad, Jones led the 2020-21 team to a share of the MEAC Northern Division title (8-4) in addition to the MEAC Championship. It marked the first time NSU won both the regular season and tournament titles in the same year. The Spartans went on to defeat Appalachian State, the only current MEAC school to win two games in the NCAA Tournament. The program was named the HBCU Large School National Champion by the Black College Sports Network (BCSN). Jones was named the MEAC Tournament Most Outstanding Coach and the HBCU Co-Coach of the Year by HBCU All-Stars LLC/CBS Sports. He was a finalist for three CollegeInsider awards: Ben Jobe (top minority coach), Hugh Durham (top mid-major coach) and Skip Prosser (success on the court and integrity off the court). NSU went 17-8 overall in 2020-21, his seventh .500 or better overall record in eight years as head coach. It is another WAC Wednesday and another episode of the WAC Hoops Digest podcast. On this episode, Inland Sports Show Senior Writer Derryl Trujillo discusses the culture and success that both the California Baptist men and women are experiencing.Rick Croy won his 300th game on Friday Dec. 4 against SE Louisiana. Croy is only 43 years old so it makes reaching this feat all the more impressive. It's about finding the right players and players that buy into the culture of hard work and competitiveness in order to have success at CBU. Jarod Olsen has had great success as the women's head coach. In seven-plus seasons, Olsen has won 174 games and currently has CBU at 5-0 to start the 2020-21 season. The Lady Lancers entered the Collegeinsider.com mid-major Top-25 polls this week. It's all about culture, according to Trujillo. Both coaches find and develop players that fit their program rather than simply going out and signing the best players. Both coaches want the best players but if they won't be a good fit, then they probably won't end up in Riverside at California Baptist. Development is another characteristic of both teams. This is a little more apparent on the women's side. Trujillo discusses this and talks about players that have been in the program all four years. Ty Rowell and Tre Armstrong are among these players on the men's team. Rob Senderoff just completed his ninth season as Kent State's head coach and ranks all-time winningest coach in program history with 181 wins. Rob took over the program in April 2011 after spending seven previous years on the Golden Flashes’ coaching staff. In his nine seasons as head coach, the 24-year coaching veteran has continued the success of the storied program that he helped build by leading the Golden Flashes to six 20-win campaigns and postseason appearances. Columbia University Head Men's Basketball Coach Jim Engles joins host Pat Price for a discussion on coach development, the importance of mentoring young assistant coaches, and his many years in Ivy League Basketball, Engles has just completed his 4th season leading the Lions program. He was no stranger to Columbia, having previously served at as an assistant for several years under Joe Jones before heading across the river to lead the building of the NJIT program.Engles returned to Columbia after spending eight years as head coach for the New Jersey Institute of Technology. Over his final six seasons at NJIT, Engles compiled a 100-88 record, including back-to-back 20-win seasons in 2014-15 and 2016-17.NJIT had competed at the Division I level for only two seasons when Engles arrived in 2008, and in three years he turned them into a 15-win program. In 2014-15, he directed the Highlanders to a 21-12 record, including an upset at No. 16 Michigan and a postseason berth, advancing to the semifinals of the CollegeInsider.com Tournament (CIT).At the conclusion of the 2014-15 season, Engles was named John McLendon National Coach of the Year honors from CollegeInsider.com, received the Peter A. Palmore previously coached for three seasons at Coastal Carolina under head coach Cliff Ellis. He helped the Chanticleers to the NCAA Tournament in 2015, three CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament wins in 2016 and an appearance in the College Basketball Invitational in 2017. Coastal Carolina advanced to the CBI Championship that season while Palmore was part of the program's first, second and third postseason victories in the CIT with wins over Mercer, New Hampshire and Grand Canyon. Palmore's arrival in Conway paid immediate dividends helping the program to its second straight NCAA Tournament appearance, earning the 16th seed in the West Region and face No. 1-seeded Wisconsin. Palmore was an assistant coach at Georgia from 2009-14. The Bulldogs compiled an 85-77 record over Palmore's five seasons and advanced to the 2014 National Invitation Tournament (NIT) and the 2011 NCAA Tournament. Palmore coached three future NBA players at Georgia, including 2013 number eight overall pick Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, Travis Leslie and Trey Thompkins. Prior to Georgia, Palmore spent five seasons at Virginia Tech under head coach Seth Greenberg. Palmore built a reputation at Virginia Tech as one of the ACC's top assistant coaches, both as a recruiter and an on-court teacher. His arrival in Blacksburg coincided with Tech's joining the ACC. During his time there, the Hokies' program ranked fourth in the league in total ACC regular season victories with 38. He recruited and coached three players who played in the NBA in Malcolm Delaney (Atlanta Hawks), Jarrell Eddie (Washington Wizards, Phoenix Suns, Boston Celtics, Chicago Bulls) and Erick Green (Denver Nuggets, Utah Jazz). He joined the Virginia Tech program in the summer of 2004 after spending the previous season as an assistant coach at the College of Charleston. Before going to Charleston, he spent the 2003 season at Evansville. Palmore also served two seasons (2001-02) as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Western Carolina. During his time there, he signed Ohio native Kevin Martin, who eventually ranked second nationally in scoring in 2004 and was a first round draft pick by the Sacramento Kings. Palmore began his coaching career at Warwick High School in Newport News, Va., where he served as an assistant coach for three years (1993-96) and head coach for his final year. He then spent one year at Lander in his hometown of Greenwood and two years at Erskine before joining the staff at Western Carolina. A 1993 graduate of Livingstone College (N.C.), Palmore played basketball and golf at the collegiate level. As a junior and senior, he ranked in the top-10 nationally for Division II in 3-point field goal percentage and was co-captain his last two seasons. Palmore has a son, Jaden Alexander.

Coach Simon is in his fourth year at the helm of the Southern Utah University men’s basketball team after being named the head coach on March 24, 2016. Simon’s third season with the program was one for the record books, and one of the most successful the program has experienced in recent memory. The Thunderbirds qualified for postseason play for the first time since 2001, and won the first postseason game in the program’s Division I history in the First Round of the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament. The T-Birds defeated the Drake Bulldogs, who were Co-Regular Season Champions of the Missouri Valley Conference. The 2018-19 season provided several milestones. SUU finished .500 for the first time since the 2006-07 season with a mark of 17-17. The T-Birds won nine Big Sky Conference games, which was the most the program had earned since joining the league. They also secured back-to-back winning non-conference records. Prior to Southern Utah, Simon was named interim head coach of the UNLV men’s basketball program in January 2016 and immediately led them to three consecutive victories. During Simon’s 17 games as interim head coach, the Runnin’ Rebels ranked as the number one team in the nation in adjusted tempo, scoring more than 100 points in four games. UNLV finished with a 9-8 record, despite playing with as few as five scholarship players. While he was associate head coach with UNLV he also played a critical role in assembling UNLV’s roster, which Rivals.com ranked its 2014 recruiting class No. 5 in the nation, while the 2015 class was ranked No. 11. Prior to his tenure as a Runnin’ Rebel, Simon served Findlay Prep for seven years in both head and assistant coaching roles. As head coach at Findlay Prep in 2012-2013, he led the team to a 35-1 record, including eight wins over top-25 ranked teams. The 35 victories are the most wins in school history. During Simon’s tenure at Findlay Prep, they accumulated an overall record of 192-9. During his career Simon has helped develop and coach several players that have become top NBA draft picks, including Anthony Bennett, who was selected as the top overall pick in 2013, Rashad Vaughn, who was picked No. 17 in 2015, and Avery Bradley. Other NBA player’s Simon has coached in his career include Christian Wood, Jorge Gutierrez, Cory Joseph, DeAndre Liggins, Nick Johnson and Tristan Thompson. Dedrique Taylor, Program Building Guest: Dedrique Taylor, Cal State Fullerton Basketball Head Coach In this week’s basketball coaching conversation, Cal State Fullerton head coach Dedrique Taylor joins the podcast to discuss the slow build reality of most college programs. Taylor has built Cal State Fullerton into a program with national and league significance that has achieved many first in program history. He explains his philosophy on culture, style of play and the brilliance of James Harden, who he helped recruit and coach at Arizona State. Taylor led the 2017-18 squad to a Big West Tournament Championship and a trip to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2007-08 and only the third time in program history. And with March Madness coming to close, we talk to NCAA basketball coach and horse racing enthusiast Jimmy Patsos. A retired American Thoroughbred horse racing Hall of Fame jockey, Chris McCarron won nine Breeders' Cup races, including five Breeders' Cup Classics, and rode six winners in the U.S. Triple Crown Races. McCarron rode many of the best horses of his era, including John Henry, Alysheba, Precisionist, Lady’s Secret, Sunday Silence, Paseana, Tiznow, Touch Gold, Go for Gin and Alphabet Soup. In 1989, he was inducted into the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame. McCarron finished as thoroughbred racing's all-time leader in purse earnings with more than $264 million in winnings. Jimmy Patsos is the head men’s basketball coach at Siena College. This season, his 14th as a Division I head coach, he recorded his 200th win. In his first three seasons at the helm, Patsos piloted the Saints to a pair of 20-win campaigns and national postseason tournament appearances. Patsos came to Siena after nine transformative years at Loyola University Maryland. Introduced as the eighth head coach in the program’s 40-year Division I history at a press conference at the Charles L. Sewall Center May 11, 2010, Toole signed a two-year contract extension at RMU April 15, 2015, and will lead the Colonials through the 2019-20 campaign. In six seasons under Toole’s tutelage, the Colonials have posted an overall record of 120-87 (.580), including a mark of 73-33 (.689) against Northeast Conference opponents. Toole has overseen the most successful stretch in school history during his nine-year tenure at Robert Morris. Named an assistant coach under former head coach Mike Rice in 2007, Toole was elevated to associate head coach the following season before taking over the reigns as head coach in 2010. During Toole's six seasons as head coach at RMU, the Colonials have claimed two NEC regular-season championships (2013, 2014), appeared in four NEC Tournament championship games (2011, 2012, 2014, 2015) and have made four national postseason appearances. Robert Morris played in its first CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament (CIT) in 2012, earned automatic bids to the National Invitation Tournament (NIT) in both 2013 and 2014 and appeared in the 2015 NCAA Tournament. Four of RMU's five victories in a national postseason tournament have come under Toole. In 2011-12, his second year as head coach, Toole led the Colonials to an overall record of 26-11 (.703). Robert Morris tied a school record for victories by advancing to the quarterfinals of the 2012 CIT thanks to road wins over Indiana State (3/13/12) and Toledo (3/17/12). In 2012-13, RMU claimed its 10th NEC regular-season championship with a ledger of 14-4 (.778) in conference action and overall finished 24-11 (.686). Robert Morris earned a spot in the 2013 NIT, advancing to the second round thanks to a landmark 59-57 victory over Kentucky (3/19/13) in front of 3,444 fans at the Charles L. Sewall Center, the largest crowd in school history. RMU earned its second straight NEC regular-season crown in 2013-14 with a record of 14-2 (.875) in league play and finished 22-14 (.611) overall. For his efforts, Toole was named the 2014 NEC Jim Phelan Coach of the Year. Led by a career-high 38 points from 2014 NEC Player of the Year Karvel Anderson (2012-14), the Colonials notched a win in the first round of the NIT for the second consecutive year with an 89-78 victory at St. John's (3/18/14). In the history of the NIT, a No. 8 seed has knocked off a No. 1 seed just four times, with Robert Morris owning two of those victories thanks to its wins over Kentucky and St. John's. Toole guided Robert Morris to an overall record of 20-15 (.571) in 2014-15, including a mark of 12-6 (.667) in the NEC. The Colonials finished in a tie for second place with Bryant in the league standings and as the No. 2 seed claimed the 2015 NEC Tournament title with a 66-63 win at No. 1 seed St. Francis Brooklyn (3/10/15). The win over the Terriers helped RMU secure its league-high eighth NEC Tournament title and subsequent bid to the NCAA Tournament. Robert Morris earned its first NCAA Tournament victory since 1983 and second overall in program history by posting an 81-77 victory over North Florida (3/18/15) as part of the 2015 NCAA First Four at UD Arena in Dayton, Ohio.
