If you've driven along Division Street in West Mount Vernon, you've probably noticed a building that looks like it might have once been a ‘50s-style diner, just a block east of the intersection at Wahl (McLean). These days, however, it's home to a Mexican restaurant called Cocina Sabores — the “flavorful kitchen” en Engles. Here in the Magic Skagit we have an embarrassment of culinary riches when it comes to Mexican food. In this podcast you're going to find out why Cocina Sabores deserves to be counted as one of those riches, and we'll learn about the family behind them.

In F.A. Hayek's book The Counter-Revolution of Science, he explains the significance of two French thinkers, Henri de Saint Simon and Auguste Comte, who, by applying the language and methods of the natural sciences to social phenomenon, are responsible for the dramatic rise of socialism, totalitarianism, and the idea of the technocratic state. Even though these names have largely been forgotten to history, their ideas were wildly popular during the 19th century and merged with Hegelianism in Germany, leading to the works of Marx and Engles. In passing, Hayek refers to two prominent 19th century Biblical scholars, David Fredrich Strauss and Ernst Renan, both of whom were influenced by Saint-Simonian ideas. Both of these scholars were deeply influential in the development of modern Biblical scholarship, and both had ties to the nationalist and statist movements that swept Europe during this time. Strauss was the most influential member of the Tubingen School in Germany, which set the parameters for modern Biblical scholarship, and Renan had an outsized influence in France. I outline as a preliminary theory the significance of these two figures being attached to Saint-Simonian ideas and how that has quite possibly shaped the presuppositions of all modern Biblical scholarship down to this day. I also explain how Albert Schweitzer correctly sets both of their work in the context of Hegelianism but missed the Hegelian merger with Saint-Simonianism.  We need a Biblical scholar who can take these ideas further, and I plan on addressing this interesting insight in more detail in later shows.   Media Referenced:The Counter-Revolution of Science, F.A. The Global Novel: a literature podcast

Marxism is a left-wing to far-left method of socioeconomic analysis that uses a materialist interpretation of historical development, better known as historical materialism, to understand class relations and social conflict and a dialectical perspective to view social transformation. Today I speak with philosopher Daniel Tutt on several basic notions of Marxism and literature. Daniel's research focuses on psychoanalytic theory and Marxist thought. He is the author of Psychoanalysis and the Politics of the Family: The Crisis of Initiation. What kind of country will America be when our grandchildren grow up? How will my choices today shape that future 20 years from now? I frequently ask myself these two questions, especially with the country's direction as of late. Though Communism is still an ideology of the minority here and abroad, its power grows in strength with each stroke of President Biden's pen and Mainstream Media's propaganda. As Abraham Lincoln pointed out long before becoming the President, if America is to be destroyed, its own people will destroy it. His words have never seemed more prophetic. At what point then is the approach of danger to be expected? I answer, if it ever reach us, it must spring up amongst us. It cannot come from abroad. If destruction be our lot, we must ourselves be its author and finisher. As a nation of freemen, we must live through all time, or die by suicide.Abraham Lincoln, Lyceum Address, 1838 As a grandparent, I'm afraid of what the world could be once our grandson becomes an adult. In the past, it made sense to leave the politics to the politicians. But today, the politicians want to rewrite the constitution and dictate health policy, morality, and have the state become the church. That's too close to Communism to ignore. Is Communism really a concern for our country? President Trump said that America would never become a socialist nation. Communism is even worse. Isn't it a little extreme to think that could happen here? Not anymore. As W. Cleon Skousen wrote in The Naked Communist, 'When Karl Marx was asked what his objective in life was, he said, “To dethrone God and destroy capitalism!'” The utopian society Communism promises comes at a cost. It requires the dismantling (you've been hearing politicians use that word a lot lately) of everything in a society that's based on capitalism, Christian values, and individual thought. A successful Communist society eliminates those who disagree and does away with freedom of speech and thought. How would that happen? Through their different writings, Marx, Engles, and Stalin outlined the process, which sounds vaguely familiar when you consider current events. .ugb-7575907-wrapper.ugb-container__wrapper{background-color:#f5f5f5 !important}.ugb-7575907-wrapper.ugb-container__wrapper:before{background-color:#f5f5f5 !important}.ugb-7575907-content-wrapper > h1,.ugb-7575907-content-wrapper > h2,.ugb-7575907-content-wrapper > h3,.ugb-7575907-content-wrapper > h4,.ugb-7575907-content-wrapper > h5,.ugb-7575907-content-wrapper > h6{color:#222222}.ugb-7575907-content-wrapper > p,.ugb-7575907-content-wrapper > ol li,.ugb-7575907-content-wrapper > ul li{color:#222222} They (Marx and Engles) felt it could be done in three steps: First, by wiping out the old order. “There is but one way of simplifying, shortening, concentrating the death agony of the old society as well as the bloody labor of the new world's birth—Revolutionary Terror.” Second, the representatives of the working class must then set up a Dictatorship of the Proletariat. Joseph Stalin described the things which must be accomplished during this period of the dictatorship: Completely suppress the old capitalist class. Create a mighty army of “defense” to be used “for the consolidation of the ties with the proletarians of other lands, and for the development and the victory of the revolution in all countries.”Consolidate the unity of the masses in support of the Dictatorship. Establish universal socialism by eliminating private property and preparing all mankind for the ultimate adoption of full Communism. Third, the final step is the transition from socialism to full Communism. Socialism is characterized by state ownership of land and all means of production. Marx and Engels believed that after a while, when class consciousness has disappeared and there is no further resistance to be overcome, the state will gradually wither away and then property will automat...

Primitive socialism was a concept put forward by Marx and Engels who argued that the basal condition of humanity in foraging communities was that of a socialist utopia. The narrative of a long history of egalitarian, altruistic hunter-gatherers is incredibly attractive to aspirational socialists. Dr. Dozier argue that this portrayal of human prehistory is romanticized and unsupported by archaeological and anthropological evidence. The myth of primitive socialism, however, has continued past Marx and Engles, due to its simple and attractive narrative consistent with the Noble Savage myth.

What Marx and Engle REALLY believed (according to what they wrote) AND why it is so deadly.  The fruit of Marxist ideals is death. We have witnessed the destruction of nations, murder of 100+ of millions of lives all in the name of progress unto and new man, new society, and equality. The Principles of Communism by Frederick Engels

In 1847 Engels wrote two draft programmes for the Communist League in the form of a catechism, one in June and the other in October. The latter, which is known as Principles of Communism, was first published in 1914. The earlier document https://www.marxists.org/archive/marx/works/1847/06/09.htm (Draft of the Communist Confession of Faith), was only found in 1968. It was first published in 1969 in Hamburg, together with four other documents pertaining to the first congress of the Communist League, in a booklet entitled Gründungs Dokumente des Bundes der Kommunisten (Juni bis September 1847) (Founding Documents of the Communist League). At the June 1847 Congress of the League of the Just, which was also the founding conference of the Communist League, it was decided to issue a draft “confession of faith” to be submitted for discussion to the sections of the League. The document which has now come to light is almost certainly this draft. Comparison of the two documents shows that Principles of Communism is a revised edition of this earlier draft. In Principles of Communism, Engels left three questions unanswered, in two cases with the notation “unchanged” (bleibt); this clearly refers to the answers provided in the earlier draft. The new draft for the programme was worked out by Engels on the instructions of the leading body of the Paris circle of the Communist League. The instructions were decided on after Engles' sharp criticism at the committee meeting, on October 22, 1847, of the draft programme drawn up by the “https://www.marxists.org/glossary/terms/t/r.htm#true-socialism (true socialist)” Moses Hess, which was then rejected. Still considering Principles of Communism as a preliminary draft, Engels expressed the view, in a https://www.marxists.org/archive/marx/works/1847/letters/47_11_24.htm#tuesday (letter to Marx dated November 23-24 1847), that it would be best to drop the old catechistic form and draw up a programme in the form of a manifesto. “Think over the Confession of Faith a bit. I believe we had better drop the catechism form and call the thing: Communist Manifesto. As more or less history has got to be related in it, the form it has been in hitherto is quite unsuitable. I am bringing what I have done here with me; it is in simple narrative form, but miserably worded, in fearful haste. ...” At the second congress of the Communist League (November 29-December 8, 1847) Marx and Engels defended the fundamental scientific principles of communism and were trusted with drafting a programme in the form of a manifesto of the Communist Party. In writing the manifesto the founders of Marxism made use of the propositions enunciated in Principles of Communism. Engels uses the term Manufaktur, and its derivatives, which have been translated “manufacture”, “manufacturing”, etc., Engels used this word literally, to indicate production by hand, not factory production for which Engels uses “big industry”. Manufaktur differs from handicraft (guild production in mediaeval towns), in that the latter was carried out by independent artisans. Manufacktur is carried out by homeworkers working for merchant capitalists, or by groups of craftspeople working together in large workshops owned by capitalists. It is therefore a transitional mode of production, between guild (handicraft) and modern (capitalist) forms of production.

In this episode we reflect on historically pagan views of sexuality and marriage (focusing primarily on Greco-Roman paganism, but considering other pagan practices as well) and we illustrate how these pagan and distinctly non-Christian views are manifesting in our culture today. We trace the pagan penchant for pornography from the walls of Pompeii to modern art and popular shows. In this tour de force episode, we cover modern examples of polyamory, polygamy, polyandry, and group marriage and we document the uptick in creative and trail blazing romantic arrangements such as 'monogamish' marriage and the 'polyfidelous closed quad' configuration. Jordan Peterson, a Professor of Psychology at the University of Toronto, has recently enjoyed a meteoric rise to fame with his energetic and refreshing critiques of Marxist, left-leaning ideologies entrenched in the Arts Faculties of many universities. Peterson has expressed his views on morality, politics, science and religion in YouTube videos, public lectures, media interviews and his recent self-help book titled "12 Rules for Life: An Antidote to Chaos". Because of his effective attacks on the political Left, many Christians have found themselves agreeing with Peterson's views, and even recommending his lectures on the Bible. But are Peterson's teachings consistent with Christianity? In this episode we begin our deconstruction of Peterson's views, focusing on one of his main sources of inspiration: the anti-Christian philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche. During this deconstruction we also touch on the teachings of Karl Marx, Friedrich Engels and John Stuart Mill.BibliographyBooksPeterson, J. B. (2018). 12 Rules For Life: An Antidote to Chaos. Actor, Jayne Eastwood joining the conversation on Cue To Cue Today!! What a blast I had with Jayne! She made me guffaw a few times during our conversation. Don’t be fooled! There are so many gems of wisdom hidden amongst the laughter and funny stories, Jayne has had a diversified career as an actor with much success and she is opening up about the ups and downs of it all and how she remains grounded through it all.   In this episode: How painting has served as another creative outlet and forces her to be present and in the moment What mantra she used to help her quit smoking after 50 years and the effect it has had on her vocal range How to accept rejection as a part of the game and why it is important to feel the feelings around being rejected. How “showing up” is the key to moving forward in your career as an artist. A little about Jayne: Jayne Eastwood, actor (born in Toronto). Jayne Eastwood was raised in Toronto, where she attended Northern Secondary School. It was in Toronto that she became a member of the cast of the musical Godspell, which played at the ROYAL ALEXANDRA THEATRE. The show ran from 1972-73 and Eastwood worked with cast members Martin SHORT, Andrea MARTIN, Gilda RADNER, and Eugene LEVY, and joined several of them in founding the Second City Theatre Troupe. Eastwood often appeared on Second City's creative offspring, SCTV, most memorably in the famous parody of GOIN' DOWN THE ROAD (her recurring line of dialogue is "I'm bummed out") with John CANDY and Joe FLAHERTY. Though Eastwood moves effortlessly from comedy to drama, comedy remains her magnetic north, drawing her to work with Women Fully Clothed, a group of performers nominated in 2005 for a CANADIAN COMEDY AWARD for best sketch troupe. From the early 1970s to the mid-1980s Eastwood appeared in stage productions of works by Michel TREMBLAY, Tom Stoppard, and Neil Simon, by such companies as Theatre in the Dell, Toronto Arts Productions, Centrestage Company, and Toronto Truck Theatre. She maintained a presence in both movies and television, working steadily in a variety of roles that began, in the 1980s, to include considerable voice work. One of her first television appearances was on the series That's Show Biz with Lorne MICHAELS and Hart and Earl Pomerantz, and she went on to become a regular on John Byner's show Bizarre from 1980 to 1985. In film, she played the president's wife in Al WAXMAN's sex comedy My Pleasure Is My Business (1975), appeared in the Robin SPRY film One Man (1977), had a small part in David CRONENBERG's Videodrome (1983) and did voice work for The Care Bears Movie (1985). She could be heard as the voice of Mrs Dingle and of Cookie and Joyce in the animated shows For Better or For Worse, and Bob and Margaret. In 1998 she won a GEMINI AWARD for best supporting actress in a drama for Dangerous Offender: the Marlene Moore Story. She played Aunt Agatha on the series Noddy and Friends, winning a 1999 Gemini Award for her work. Eastwood's film and TV appearances continued through the 1990s and into the new millennium, in works as varied as Life with Judy Garland: Me and My Shadows (2001), Chicago (2002) and My Big Fat Greek Wedding (2002). Eastwood has had parts in everything from stage productions of Marat/Sade to TV shows such as King of Kensington, Anne of Green Gables, and Riverdale, and in radio plays like CBC's Steve the Second. She is best known for her role as Betty, the pregnant wife abandoned by Joey in the canonical English-Canadian film Goin' down the Road (1970). Many viewers will recall her as the character Ronnie Sacks in the Canadian television series This Is Wonderland or as one of the regular characters in the partly improvised Train 48. She appears as Maxine Bingley in the series Billable Hours and plays a teacher in the movie Hairspray (2007), which was shot in Toronto. She has a recurring character part in the popular series Little Mosque n the Prarie, and reprised her Goin' down the Road role in the sequel, Down the Road Again (2011). In 2014 she was a guest star on Working the Engles alongside her old friend Andrea Martin.  She can be seen in the hit series Haven (2013-2014) as the recurring lead role of Gloria.  More recently Jayne worked with director Kenny ORTEGA on The Rocky Horror Picture Show and Orphan Black with Tatiana MASLANY. In 1999 Jayne Eastwood received the EARLE GREY AWARD for lifetime achievement and the recipient of the 2011 DAVE BROADFOOT AWARD at the CANADIAN COMEDY AWARDS. Eastwood is a talented and reliable actor who decided early on to remain in Toronto rather than leave for the limelight of the US. Her career is curiously and satisfyingly Canadian in that she has crafted a successful working life as an ensemble player in a variety of media while remaining in her own home town. Anita Engles is the Executive Director of the American Bookbinders Museum based in San Francisco, California. It's the only museum of its kind in North America celebrating and exploring the culture and tools of bookbinders and bookbinding from its earliest forms through the changes and innovations of the industrial revolution. In addition to the craft and artistry of binding, it focuses on the stories of the men, women, and children who worked in binderies. We sat down in the bookstore at the museum after I had gotten a great tour of the place from docent Madeleine Robins. We talk, among other things, about the process and human experience of bookbinding, the book as IT, the industrial revolution, the tools and unique equipment housed at the museum, funding, the special collection of publisher's bindings, designers, temporary exhibits, founder Tim James, preserving and telling the story of the craft of bookbinding, keeping history alive, artist books, the book arts, and places the literary tourist should visit when in San Francisco.

This week Jstebz and The Stevil Dead are joined by Booked co-host and Katie Findlay and her bestie, Kacey Rohl, of Working the Engles and Hannibal. The ladies tell the story of their first meeting, and how the very start of their friendship is documented in a scene of AMC's The Killing. Kacey shares what it has been like to work with SCTV alums Andrea Martin and Martin Short, that time she had to strip in front of Jason Priestly, and awkward moments on the set of Hannibal. Katie talks about her upcoming role on the new Shondra Rhimes drama 'How To Get Away With Murder' and backpedaling out of badly worded interview answers.
