Send us a Text Message. What if understanding your child's brain could transform your parenting approach? Join us in this episode of Legit Parenting as seasoned child and family therapist Craig Knippenberg, LCSW, M.Div and special guest Dr. Robin McEvoy, a developmental neuropsychologist, joins us to shed light on the identification and management of learning disabilities and developmental challenges in children, offering invaluable advice for parents during the crucial summer break.Navigating the maze of parental concerns can be overwhelming, especially with the added pressures of modern education and the lingering effects of COVID-19. We'll discuss the importance of tailored educational approaches and the benefits of reducing homework to improve both mental health and learning outcomes. Dr. McEvoy emphasizes the significance of understanding family and medical history when addressing learning disabilities, advocating for early evaluations and interventions. We'll talk about the critical roles of nutrition, hydration, sleep, and exercise in a child's overall well-being, especially for those with attention deficit disorders. Practical strategies for reinforcing positive behavior and building new skills in children are shared, along with a discussion on balancing naturopathic approaches with medication when necessary. Dr. Robin McEvoy has been practicing developmental neuropsychology for 30 years. With each evaluation, she asks herself, “How can I help.” Many parents bring their kids in for evaluation because they are still struggling, despite working with a psychiatrist, a psychologist, a learning specialist or a whole team of specialists. The parents were doing “standard of care” thoroughly, but it was not enough. There were times she worried that she would not find a way to help, that the parents were already doing everything possible. But she hates the thought of saying there was nothing else to be done. So instead of saying that, she decided to dig deeper. She dug into nutrition, sleep, medical conditions and myriad of complementary and alternative approaches to learning and behavior. (And while digging, she met Child Decoded co-founder, Kim Gangwish.)By developing a more thorough understanding of the mind/body integration, she began to find other avenues that actually opened up new possibilities for children. She loves having options for families who had been told to just accept their child's challenges and live with them. She had been told the same thing about her own daughter who had a severe speech disability and sensory issues. As both a developmental neuropsychologist and a parent, she became expert at mapping out paths through difficult presentations.Dr. McEvoy earned her PH.D. in Developmental Psychology from the University of Houston, then went on to fellow in Psychobiology/Neuropsychology at the University of Colorado Medical School. She holds a research faculty position at the University of Colorado, and also maintains a private practice where she can evaluate using the Child Decoded model.Evaluation is the heart of her work with children: helping families, pediatricians, and school districts to find a deeper understanding of complex challenges. Dr. McEvoy enjoys writing and blogs frequently for Child Decoded. She loves public speaking and is a highly rated speaker. You can read more about Robin McEvoy at her website www.robinmcevoy.com. She blogs about learning and learning challenges as well as tons about “behavior problems in children” because she has strong opinions about that. Medicine and Miracles in the High Desert: My Life among the Navajo People with Dr. Erica Elliott. Erica was born into a large family with a Swiss mother and an American father. Throughout her childhood, Erica moved with her family from one part of the world to another due to her father's work. She began her schooling in England, graduated from high school in Germany, and then studied art in Florence, Italy, before returning to the States to attend college. The seeds for becoming a medical doctor were first sown when she spent a summer in Switzerland learning from her uncle, an eccentric and brilliant medical doctor. It took many years before those seeds sprouted. Erica came to medicine later than most medical students, after pursuing other careers and interests, including teaching grade school and herding sheep on the Navajo Reservation, mountain climbing in the Andes while serving in the Peace Corps in South America, teaching Outward Bound students wilderness survival in the Rocky Mountains, studying spiritual practices, and traveling abroad. After graduating from University of Colorado Medical School and completing her residency in family practice in Denver, Erica worked in Cuba, New Mexico, where she fulfilled her National Health Service obligation. From there she worked in a number of settings including a clinic for indigent care, a local emergency room, a women's clinic, a multispecialty clinic, and finally, in 1993, Dr. Elliott opened her own private practice in her co-housing community, The Commons, which she help found in the early 1990s. Dr. Elliott's unrelenting curiosity has led her on many eye-opening and heart-opening adventures. The years she spent living in foreign cultures, both as a child and an adult, enabled her to bring a fresh perspective to her life's work. Dr. Elliott specializes in family practice and environmental medicine. Her private medical practice grew rapidly and soon she was treating patients who came to her from other parts of the country, as well as local patients. She has been nicknamed the “Health Detective.” She finds deep meaning and purpose through helping her patients find relief from their suffering. Over the years, Erica has given radio talks, interviews, webinars, workshops at Esalen and Omega Institutes, and a TEDx talk about living in co-housing. Our guest today is Dr. Gretchen Frey. Her specialty is Obstetrics and Gynecology. She graduated from the University of Colorado Medical School in 1985 and fulfilled her residency at the University of Colorado in 1989. She was on the faculty as an Associate Clinical Professor in the Department of Family Medicine at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. She began her obstetrics and gynecology practice in Littleton, CO in 1989 and gradually became more interested in integrative medicine. She practiced office-only gynecology from 2010 until 2019, and is now retired from clinical practice. During her years of practice, Dr. Frey developed special expertise in menopausal medicine. This included prescribing a wide variety of hormonal preparations including compounded bioidentical hormones. Another area of interest became the treatment of sexual difficulties, including low desire and vulvar pain syndromes. Sexual pain syndromes can be challenging to diagnose and treat. She often found that a team approach utilizing several providers with different skills provides the best chance of success. Dr. Frey is now retired from clinical practice and increasing her activities in her "encore career" as a sexuality educator. We are excited to have Dr. Kedar Prasad on the show with us today! He is a youthful and very knowledgeable eighty-five-year-old gentleman who attained the world’s first Radiation Biology Ph.D. in 1963.  Dr. Prasad holds patents on the radiation defense benefits of micronutrients. He has published 29 books and over 250 peer-reviewed scientific papers on micronutrition, including papers on radiation defense with micronutrition.  Dr. Prasad has been a professor at the University of Colorado Medical School for more than thirty years and is the Director of Vitamin and Cancer Research. He is also a member of the British Royal Society of Medicine, an invited member of the Nobel Nominating Committee for Candidates in Medicine, and former President of the International Society of Cancer and Nutrition.  He is joined today by his colleague, Dave Nemelka, who is a Wharton MBA, a Proctor and Gamble Health-Care Brand Manager, a Founder of McKinley Capital, and the Founder and CEO of Engage Global. He is also Dr. Prasad’s partner in bringing wellness to the world with micronutrition. Misinformation about radiation and EMF is abounding at the moment. Dr. Prasad has invested his life in coming up with answers, and he is with us to give us a message of hope and positivity.  Dr. Prasad and Dave are joining us on the show today to educate us and to help us understand what electromagnetic frequency fields are. They explain why EMF radiation is a concern with the growing technology of 5G, what electromagnetic frequency fields do to our bodies, how to protect ourselves proactively against EMF radiation, and how micronutrients work to protect us from the inside out against damage from 5G EMF radiation. Stay tuned to find out more! The Story Behind the Micro Daily EMF Product Dr. Prasad has formulated a micronutrient product that has a rich history of science behind it. In 2001, he was approached by the US Department of Defence while they were getting ready for the Afghan war. The US military was collaborating with the Russian Federation at the time because of their experiences in Afghanistan. The Russians had had positive experiences with antioxidants with their troops in Afghanistan. Those troops were healing and performing better than troops without antioxidants, so the US military also wanted to have a supplement for the US soldiers. They picked Dr. Prasad as their expert, and in 2001, they began an almost six-year process with Dr. Prasad conducting fourteen clinical studies to validate the foundational formula that is in the patent-pending Micro Daily EMF product. The product is safe to use, and none of the ingredients in it interact adversely with either prescription or non-prescription drugs. IN THIS EPISODE YOU’LL LEARN ABOUT: What EMF radiation is and why we need to be concerned about it. Credible research that indicates that 5G EMF radiation causes cellular damage and is a threat to our health. The impact of EMF on the developing brain. Using micronutrition as an effective defense against 5G EMF radiation damage. Dr. Prasad developed a supplement that has all the necessary micronutrients that are critical for the health of our bodies.  Why Dr. Prasad recommends taking a micronutrient supplement twice, rather than once a day. Why Dr. Prasad does not add any iron, copper, or manganese to his micronutrient preparation. Some simple changes you can make that will reduce your exposure to radiation from the EMF devices in your home. Our bodies are designed to deal with threats from our environment if we give them the proper nutrition at the foundational, cellular level. Today, we're going to talk about Valleys of Life and our Self Talk. Have you ever struggled with your self talk? Are you consistent at talking nicely to yourself? What kind of things do you find yourself saying to yourself? Let me just tell you a little bit about who I am. I'm Isabel and I'm living here in New Zealand. I graduated in 1991 as a medical doctor from the University of Colorado Medical School. At the moment, I have been working on Doctor on a Mission. Before I graduated from medical school, I used to say things like, “You will never make it Isabel. You are such a loser” or things like, “You'll never get the weight off” or “You'll never become a doctor”, you know, “you're not good at math”. Life is full of ups and downs, right? Everybody likes having a beginning where they have a vision of where they are going and people love it when they get to the top of their goal. But nobody likes the change and the struggle. When we're in the valley, we've got a choice to make. The choice is -are you going to starve your doubt and feed your faith? Or, are you going to starve your faith and feed your doubt? Whatever you feed will grow. When the storms of your life happen, bend but don't break. Know that you will be stronger because of it and you will get skills, and you will get the mindset that you can make it through anything in your life.Another thing I want you to learn about is to shine the light on your self-limiting beliefs. You always have a choice. Say something like “I take control of my life and I am going to find a way. I am going to do this afraid.  I will figure this out,” and become responsible for your success. Valleys of Life - SummaryToday, we’re going to talk about Valleys of Lifeand our Self Talk. Have you ever struggled with your self talk? Are you consistent at talking nicely to yourself? What kind of things do you find yourself saying to yourself? Let me just tell you a little bit about who I am. I’m Isabel and I’m living here in New Zealand. I graduated in 1991 as a medical doctor from the University of Colorado Medical School. At the moment, I have been working on Doctor on a Mission. Before I graduated from medical school, I used to say things like, “You will never make it Isabel. You are such a loser” or things like, “You’ll never get the weight off” or “You’ll never become a doctor”, you know, “you’re not good at math”. Life is full of ups and downs, right? Everybody likes having a beginning where they have a vision of where they are going and people love it when they get to the top of their goal. But nobody likes the change and the struggle. When we’re in the valley, we’ve got a choice to make. The choice is -are you going to starve your doubt and feed your faith? Or, are you going to starve your faith and feed your doubt? Whatever you feed will grow. What you can do to get through that struggle are:1. Read positive books. · Zieg Ziegler;· Og Mandino;· John Maxwell;· Norman Vincent Peale – “The Power of Positive Thinking”;· The Good Book, the Bible2. Make a file in your email “When Life Happens”· Start depositing articles, stories, and saying so that when you find yourself in that valley, you can go there and get replenished, get fed with that information.3. Statements· Post statements all over the house, in the car, in your phone, wherever, such as:o “You are worthy.”o “You are unrepeatable miracle.”o “I will get through this and succeed.”4. Surround yourself with positive people that believe in you.5. Decide to do this afraid.· Fear will stop everybody, but don’t let it stop you. Remember, the antidote to fear is FAITH.When the storms of your life happen, bend but don’t break.Know that you will be stronger because of it and you will get skills, and you will get the mindset that you can make it through anything in your life.Another thing I want you to learn about is to shine the lighton your self-limiting beliefs. You always have a choice. Say something like “I take control of my life and I am going to find a way. I am going to do this afraid. I will figure this out,”and become responsible for your success. Don’t rely on anybody else to make you successful. You got to do the work.So in whatever you do, you can make the decision as long as it’s going to help people, it’s going to serve them, it won’t hurt them, and it’s within God’s statements. Mexico and the United States may not agree on a border wall, but the countries did just sign a historic agreement over water. A water resources expert says what it means for Colorado and for conservation in Mexico, which lags way behind. Then, during the Cold War, Rocky Flats made plutonium triggers for nuclear bombs, and property values for nearby residents plummeted. Now, those residents are getting compensation for their financial loss. And, we remember a poet from Denver who had Down Syndrome and later developed Alzheimer's Disease. Her family donated her brain to the University of Colorado Medical School at the Anschutz Medical Campus so scientists can study the link between the two conditions.
